But then he meets Jameson… younger, talented, dedicated, almost perfect, even though his mouth sometimes opens ahead of his brain. And Jameson wants Avery desperately, though he’ll settle for friendship if he can’t have more.
When an emergency demands they work together in the field, Avery discovers just how perfect Jameson is. But he had a perfect love once before, and he’s scared to even consider that he might have a chance at another. Can he trust Jameson with his newly healing heart?

Review

I love this series so much! This is hard for me to differentiate – because I can’t help but compare this to the previous two books, which I really loved…
On the one hand: I loved the world Bethke has given us – the ghosts, the afterlife, the alternate way of thinking… I was so PSYCHED that Avery gets a happy ending… I loved the idea of May/December – especially in this long lived world…

In the end – I didn’t like Avery. Ugh. He bothered me the entire time. I appreciated that he loved Luke and that was a big deal but man – Jameson is soooo awesome and I’m not sure Avery appreciated him like he should have.

That’s absolutely my humble opinion – obviously – but I kept wanting a grand gesture that proved Avery got what a treat Jameson was. The power balance in this couple felt off and I didn’t feel like it got it’s own footing by the end. Maybe if it’d been a bit longer…

Anyhow, I loved seeing the guys from books 1 and 2 – especially Derek – *sigh…

Fans of this series will want to read this and you don’t have to have read the others to enjoy this one but it won’t mean as much to you if you start with this one.

For the writing and the world building I’d give this a 5 for the romance a 3 – so 4 of 5 stars overall.

Steamy Romance: Protecting His Omega by Giovanna Reaves

Blurb: Phoenix Harcourt is a single father who was kicked out of his home when his parents found out that he was an omega. After losing his alpha mate, Phoenix turned his focus to his daughter and the successful company that was left in his care. With a threat to his life, Phoenix hires a bodyguard who wants to protect more than his body. He also want’s Phoenix’s heart.

Hired to protect an omega, Lucius Payne had one goal: do his job and nothing else. He was never one to mix business with pleasure. Moreover, finding an omega mate was not in his plans, especially when it is the man he is supposed to protect. Then his job becomes more complicated than he was expecting.

Can Lucius convince Phoenix to trust him with his heart as well as his body?

Review: So, I’m late to the party for non-shifter, mpreg stories, but this is a good one to get started with.
Phoenix was kicked out of his home at 16 because he was an omega and gay. After being taken in by Maxwell, a rich businessman (father/son relationship), Phoenix thrives and eventually takes over Maxwell’s business when he dies. Phoenix was mated once and has a little girl, Jasmine from the relationship.
Not everyone at Phoenix’s company is happy that he is the new owner, so when he starts receiving threatening letters Phoenix is forced to contact a private security company. This is how he meets Lucius, his mate.
What I liked about the story is that Phoenix is not a typical omega – yes, he knows he will submit to his alpha’s will – but he has a backbone and wouldn’t give in to the natural instinct to rollover for his alpha mate. Lucius is a patient alpha, who wants to care for his omega. There is a lot of sexual tension between the 2 men before they finally get together – mid book- but it’s worth the wait! Both men were a delight to read and Jasmine was realistically cute.
There is a surprise twist towards the end that also adds to the story (quite unique).

Luckily, I got my first taste with a good story and will likely continue to dip my toes in the sub-genre.

Geordie de la Rosa is a legend among wine lovers in Napa Valley. His ultra-fabulous style paired with a penchant for leading impromptu sing-a-longs has made him a star attraction at Conrad Winery. Co-owning a well-respected winery was never Geordie’s aspiration but he likes the niche he’s made for himself. He won’t deny that his job and his friends have helped ease his heartache and grief after the death of his longtime partner.

Levi Yeager excels at the art of reinventing himself. He’s been a minor league baseball player, a college coach and now a restaurant owner. The problem is he doesn’t know anything about the food business. And when his chef quits unexpectedly, he’s afraid his new venture is doomed. But Levi isn’t a quitter. It may be the only thing he has in common with the beautiful, sassy man from the neighboring winery who agrees to help get his new business up and running. Neither man counts on their fast friendship or the wild attraction they feel for each other. However, they know they won’t stand a chance until they let go of the past and lean into forever

Review
I’ve been waiting for Geordie’s story and I love it just as I knew I would. Geordie has been grieving over the loss of his long time love Mike for four years. Hers never considered that there could be anyone else to capture his heart until Levi. Levi is completely different from Mike. He is drawn towards Geordie. This is such a beautifully sweet romance about patience and learning to starting again. The way Geordie’s grief is so sensitively portrayed touched my heart. I truly believe that a loved one never truly leaves us but neither would they want to see us pining away forever. It was good to see Geordie’s vitality fierceness and humour come alive with Levi’s care and attention. Lane Hayes has written a book that’ll stay with me for a long time. The story takes you on highs and lows of emotions before giving you a happy ever after.

Release Day Review: Speed Dating the Boss by Sue Brown. Cowboys and Angels: Book One

Dreamspinner Presents

Blurb: Will a mix of privilege and blue collar be a recipe for love… or disaster?

Dan’s pretty satisfied with his job at the working-class bar Cowboys and Angels. He enjoys his simple life, his apartment, and his cat, but he could do without the fights that break out in the bar, his boss’s meddling daughter, Ariel… oh, and a brutal, unrequited crush on his straight alpha boss, Gideon.

When Dan’s friend prepares to tie the knot, everyone insists that Dan needs a date for the wedding. Before he can protest, Ariel arranges a gay speed-dating event at the bar with Gideon as a participant. The unforeseen revelation that Gideon is bisexual raises Dan’s hopes, especially when Gideon announces that he wants to accompany Dan to the wedding. Could Gideon really be interested in Dan?

When Dan needs someone most, Gideon offers his unconditional support, and with genuine commitment, he shows Dan the kind of man he really is. Teaming up to save the wedding from a hungover groom and intolerant parents, can Gideon convince Dan they’re the best match since beer and pizza?

Review: I liked this simple, low drama and somewhat slow burn romance.
Dan has been crushing on his boss, Gideon, ever since he started working for him.
Gideon is a widower with a college age daughter. Dan assumes his boss is off limits and works on trying to get his business degree to become a manager.
I liked how clueless he was when Gideon hints that he may actually like Dan more than the normal boss/employee relationship – it made the slow burn romance a bit more realistic. Gideon was such a nice guy – he didn’t push, just continued to take care of Dan in little ways that eventually, even Dan had to admit that there could be the beginnings of a relationship.
It’s a good story, likeable secondary characters, except for Ariel – she needed to grow up.
Good story, I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Blurb
Seizing his one chance to escape, Ethan Hosking leaves his violent ex-boyfriend, leaves his entire life, and walks into the path of a raging bushfire. Desperate to start over, a new man named Aubrey Hobbs walks out of the fire-ravaged forest, alive and alone. With no ID and no money, nothing but his grandfather’s telescope, he goes where the Southern Cross leads him.

Patrick Carney is the resident lighthouse keeper in Hadley Cove, a small town on the remote Kangaroo Island off the coast of South Australia. After the tragic death of his lover four years ago, he lives a solitary life; just him, a tabby cat, the Indian and Southern Oceans, and a whole lot of loneliness. He’s content with his life until a stranger shows up in town and turns Patrick’s head.

Patrick never expected to be interested in anyone else.

Aubrey never expected to be happy.

Between Aubrey’s love of the stars and Patrick’s love of the ocean, these two fragile hearts must navigate new waters. If they can weather the storm of their pasts, they could very well have a love that eclipses everything.

Review
One of the romantic books I’ve read about two people and how their love heals one another. N.R Walker does it again. Her books contain so much more that I always get swept up in the story. Following the journey to a satisfying end. Seizing an opportunity Ethan grabs a chance to escape his abusive boyfriend. He becomes a new man Aubrey Hobbs. Aubrey remembers the advice from his beloved grandfather and follows the Southern Cross as far as he can. He reaches Kangaroo Island where he meets Patrick. Patrick is still grieving the loss of his partner four years ago. But he is drawn to this lonely enigmatic newcomer. He wants to protect and care for him. For Aubrey Patrick is the first friend he has had in along time and the first person he has been comfortable with. This is a beautiful love story. Two people slo getting to know and trust each other. Letting their guards down and seeing a possible future. One looking to the stars and the other to the Ocean. As it always does the past catches up. How they deal with it shows the strength of their new relationship. A beautiful story. One I’ll absolutely read again and again.

The world of writers, readers, and reviewers is a close-knit family of friends, fans, and fiction fanatics. That’s the world Milo Cook and Logan Hunter reside in—thriving on the give and take of creativity, the sharing of stories and ideas, and forever glorying in their boundless love of books and the words that make them breathe.

But sometimes words can cut too deep. And when they do, there is inevitably a price to pay.

What begins for Milo and Logan as a time of new love and gentle romantic discoveries, becomes before it’s over a race for their lives and for the lives of everyone they know.

Who would ever suspect than an entity as beautiful as the written word could become a catalyst for revenge? And ultimately—murder

Review
This story is set in the world of writers and reviewers. It’s a story of finding love and companionship and at the same time of someone, as the saying goes ‘losing the plot’ and becoming a killer. They see themselves as righting a wrong by getting rid of the trolls in the reviewing world. Those who denigrate an author’s work with little justification. I thoroughly enjoyed this well crafted story. One of John Inman’s characters said “After all, in a really good book, the killer would be the last person you’d ever expect.” and he absolutely lived up to this. The murderer was the very last person I thought it would be. Every time I suspected someone a turn of events proved me wrong.
Milo and Logan have both been hurt by relationships in the past, Logan through the untimely death of his husband and Milo through a bad breakup. Both examine their hearts to decide if they are ready to start again and take it slow. Such a sweet loving relationship. The murders don’t really touch them until near the end when they realise who it is. The two threads run parallel until the last few characters. The pace of the story is slow and that absolutely suits the mood of the blossoming relationship and building the tension as the number of murders increase. For me this was not a story that kept me up reading eager to know what happened next but I was keen to come back as soon as I was able.

Seventeen years ago, Forge Reynolds fell in love… and had his heart broken. When Staff Sergeant Gage Livingston was brought into Forge’s Army field hospital, temporarily paralyzed, Forge sat with him, read his letters, answered his mail, and formed a connection he thought would last. But Gage was sent home, Forge transferred to a new post, and his letters to Gage went unanswered.

Now in the middle of a bitter divorce, Forge is sick and tired of his husband’s manipulation. He’s almost ready to make any sacrifice to get closure—then he finds Granger murdered execution-style in their home. Forge had no idea about Granger’s illicit activities, but the killers don’t believe that. They think Forge has something they want, and they’re coming after him.

When Forge’s lawyer arranges for professional protection, the last face Forge expects to see is Gage’s. Can he even contemplate a second chance for them after almost two decades, or will hoping only lead to more heartache? Before they can explore the possibilities, they must figure out what information Granger had—that others are willing to kill for—or that possible heartache could become a certainty

Review
Dirk Greyson always provides a well paced story and this mystery was no different. I loved the reconnection between Forge and Granger. It didn’t feel contrived and developed as naturally as it could considering the circumstances under which they meet again. The mystery of what Gage was involved in that led to his murder kept me guessing. I had my suspicions but I liked how the story led to so many possibilities. That along with the romance made it for a very enjoyable story.
Wow Dorian Bane has given Forge such a ruff smokey voice that felt a bit too harsh for me at times. I have listened to a few books narrated by Dorian before but the voice he has given to Forge sounded quite harsh on his vocal cords. Granger’s voice was more mellow and the tone I’ve heard in his other work. There we good characterisations of the other characters, particularly Harvey. One measure I use for Male narrators is how well they portray females. In this case it was extremely well done with both female characters having their own distinct voices.

Guy Keaton doesn’t want a hookup or a soulmate or anything in between. When he lost his wife to cancer, he knew he’d be alone for the rest of his life. He has a grown son, and his woodshop, and in a world where those born with powerful gifts are few and far between, that’s all that really matters.

Theo Fraser’s empathic gift is rare and strong. He isn’t looking for love, but when he meets Guy, everything changes, because he knows that when you find your soulmate, you hold on tight and don’t let go. The only problem is that Guy thinks he’s straight, and Theo doesn’t know if he can convince a man already set in his ways to change his mind.

Will Guy be able to give up his grief and accept Theo’s love? And what happens when a terrible betrayal forces them to fight to keep each other alive?

Review
I was so nervous about this! I’m NOT a fan of pining and this practically SCREAMED pining. (You’ll see later why that is a terrible pun….)

In any case, Guy is still mourning his wife. She was his mate, but not his fated mate. When – in this unique world Erin Leaf has drawn for us – a person of magic meets their fated mate – powerful things are put into motion.

Though he wants to deny it – he can’t – Theo is Guy’s fated mate and together they not only have amazing chemistry and love but they also create some amazing magic together.

I found the world building to be entrancing and the romance really sweet – despite some of the weirdness surrounding the ex-wife and their relationship….

Highly recommended!

Audiobook: Day and Knight by Dirk Greyson Narrated by Andrew McFerrin

Blurb

As former NSA, Dayton (Day) Ingram has national security chops and now works as a technical analyst for Scorpion. He longs for fieldwork, and scuttling an attack gives him his chance. He’s smart, multilingual, and a technological wizard. But his opportunity comes with a hitch—a partner, Knighton (Knight), who is a real mystery. Despite countless hours of research, Day can find nothing on the agent, including his first name!

Former Marine Knight crawled into a bottle after losing his family. After drying out, he’s offered one last chance: along with Day, stop a terrorist threat from the Yucatan. To get there without drawing suspicion, Day and Knight board a gay cruise, where the deeply closeted Day and equally closeted Knight must pose as a couple. Tensions run high as Knight communicates very little and Day bristles at Knight’s heavy-handed need for control.

But after drinking too much, Day and Knight wake up in bed. Together. As they near their destination, they must learn to trust and rely on each other to infiltrate the terrorist camp and neutralize the plot aimed at the US’s technological infrastructure, if they hope to have a life after the mission. One that might include each other.

Review

With Day and Knight you have a classic Cop/PI/Agent partnership. Older jaded agent gets partnered with a younger more enthusiastic agent and then the spark returns. Andrew Grey, writing under the pen name Dirk Greyson, gives us a great light entertainment story with Day and Knight. It is a good first book in the series setting the background for both Dayton and Knighton. I enjoyed the slightly antagonist way they interacted with each other. It gives a frisson to when they actually do get together. The investigation side of the story is also good, fairly straight forward find the bad guys and da with them. There is a little teaser angle to thread through to the following books. It follows the formula, nothing unexpected. As I mentioned before a good light entertaining story.
I’ve only listened to Andrew McFerrin once before. He has quite a good style. There is good characterisation coming through, especially Knight’s grumpiness and Day’s upbeat personality. The accents where needed are fine. Overall an enjoyable audiobook.

Sorrow’s grip is relentless until a rambunctious ball of fur and a handsome dog wrangler break its hold.

Four years after his partner died, leaving him to raise their daughter alone, Mason Ford still grieves his loss. Resigned to devoting his life to their little Nik, Mason goes through his days exhausted by the nightmares that keep him from sleeping. When he and Nik meet Jeremy Coulter, dog wrangler extraordinaire, their cozy world is upended. Mason’s attraction to the exuberant man with the teasing smile is unfamiliar and frightening, while Nik’s easy camaraderie with Jeremy is instantaneous.

When Jeremy saves Nik’s life, Mason wonders if he has fallen for the much younger man or are his feelings nothing more than obligation? Is it possible that love at first sight is real

Review
I’m not really sure how I feel about this story. It all seemed so convenient. There is only 39 pages for the author to convey the depth of Mason’s grief and how meeting Jeremy impacts on his and his daughter’s life. It’s been four years since his partner’s death but it reads as though Mason has depression rather than grief. Jeremy is quite a character. He seems to be able to relate well with children and animals, especially dogs. He is immediately attracted to Mason and pursues him. Everything from this point moves at quite a pace and I think the story would have benefited from being a little longer. I’m not convinced by how quick the relationship between them develops and changes. Nice short story though.
