Blurb
Shifter and Vampire True Mates story.

Alek’s older brother, Justice—the Alpha Zenith—was the first shifter to mate with a vampire in many generations, and it was believed the rare, fated pairing would stop at him. But, it hadn’t. Aleksei ‘Alek’ Volkov was second beta, next in succession to the most powerful shifter in the world. He was proud of his title and he took his duties seriously. It was all he had. Until his true mate literally showed up on his doorstep.

While his brother—the overachiever—excelled at having a vampire as a mate, Alek wasn’t that optimistic he would. He wasn’t averse to love, and he’d often thought of how different his life could’ve turned out if he’d ever experienced the emotion. His life was a mess and he’d worn a mask of stability for a majority of that time, only showing his siblings and pack what they needed to see—a strong Volkov alpha. Not the damaged man he was, with a tortured soul and a rogue wolf.

Alek dropped his heavy head in his hands. Now, for some reason, I’ve been granted a true vampire mate. And not just any vampire. The intimidating Belleron Liatos. Lord High to the King and the leader of his army.

Belleron ‘Bell’ Liatos had come to the states for one reason—his best friend and Vampire King, Chadwick Bentley. He certainly didn’t come to be pounced on by a wolf that could act independently of its master. Not only was his destined cherished a complicated and confused man; but he was also unaware of the powerful presence that lurked in the shadows of his soul. Bell didn’t know he’d be the key to unlocking an exceptional triad that would play a critical role in fulfilling the prophesy.

This story DOES NOT contain or even mention MPREG.
No multiple pairings. No cliffhangers. Ends with a very HFN.

Warning: This book is M/M paranormal: If you DO NOT like alpha men shifting into large wolves, or vampires feeding from their destined beloveds, than this may not be the novel for you.

Review

I love this series and I love this book! I don’t have enough superlatives to explain how much, but the world building is fantastic. Just enough uniqueness to make it stand out in the world of paranormal romance, but enough familiar themes to keep a die-hard fan like me appeased.

There were times when I definitely felt like this should be labeled as a ménage, I should warn you, however. The character building is so strong that the “beasts” inside Alec take on their own personalities and the way the author describes their interaction with one another and with Bell sometimes felt like separate beings at times… a lot of the time.

I found the explanation for Alec’s situation really well done and the way Bell manages him and his issues was also really good. I also loved that Bell never felt as “submissive” to Alec as I maybe sometimes felt with Wick and Justice.

There is a TON of smexy times, but definitely less than book 1 – which for me – was a good thing.

After having listened to book 1 on audio I can say I hope the author uses the same narrator and I can’t wait for it to make it to audio!

I think you need to read book 1 to really appreciate this, but I bet it’s fine as a standalone if you haven’t.

(I didn’t feel this was an HFN, FWIW – it felt very complete to me.)

Highly recommended!

Recent Release: Mastering the Flames (The Beacon Hill Sorcerer Book 4) by SJ Himes

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42974635-mastering-the-flames?ac=1&from_search=true

Blurb: Guilt-ridden after the massacre of his family, Isaac Salvatore turned to binge drinking to escape the pain. Now twenty-four years old, Isaac is a recovering alcoholic woefully out of practice in the magical arts, leaving his fire affinity hanging on the edge of disaster. After a month of rehab, he returns to Beacon Hill and his family, determined to remain sober, learn to control his magic, and figure out a plan for his life that doesn’t involve drinking.

Constantine Batiste is the oldest, most powerful vampire in the city. Born in ancient Gaul, the bastard son of a Celtic king, his long life has been shrouded in tragedy and horrors. Recent mistakes have left him wary and determined to guard his clan from all foes. When two of his clan members fall victim to an ancient evil, he summons the Necromancer of Boston for aid. Accompanying his older brother to the Tower is the handsome young fire mage once wounded by Constantine’s arrogance, and their encounter reignites an attraction that burns within both Constantine and Isaac.

The answer to who is targeting the vampires of Boston is buried in the dark, early days of Constantine’s transition to an immortal life. Isaac finds himself saddled with a painful insight into the evil cutting a swath through the supernatural population of Boston. While his brother, Angel, takes over the hunt to find and stop the threat to the city, Isaac struggles to find a balance between helping his brother and finding his own purpose and place in the world, free from his brother’s shadow.

Falling in love wasn’t part of his plan, but mastering the flames that burn between him and Constantine soon becomes the most important thing in his life, even as an ancient evil seeks to destroy them.

Review: There are some series that are worth waiting for as long as it takes for the next story. This is one of those series and this book was worth waiting for!
This is not a standalone (and is not meant to be).
The excellent world-building continues – Isaac, Angel’s alcoholic brother, has finished with rehab. He’s still trying to find his purpose and relearning how to use his power – he’s a fire mage – but lack of confidence, self-blame and regret seem to be holding him back. One person he hasn’t forgotten is Constantine, the Boston vampire Master.
Ms. Himes gives us more of Constans, (as he was known in the BCE time period), background and how he became what he is. Constantine’s past is cleverly tied into the current mystery of the present day murders makes the story all the more interesting.
The romance between Isaac and Constantine develops naturally (they had kissed in the previous book), much to Angels’ annoyance. Both Constantine and Isaac work well together, and it’s nice to see them work their way to being a couple.
The story is well researched, well written and an excellent addition to the series; (it may tie as my favourite with book 1). Old friends/family like Angel, Simeon, Eroch, Daniel, Ruari all have prominent roles in the story, without overshadowing the main couple ☺
There is a hint that there may be another Salvatore making an appearance! I can’t wait!!!

Chris~
I used to think vampires were extinct, but it turns out, they’re merely hiding. When my pack stayed with some vamps a while back, I couldn’t believe how prickly and rude they all were… all but one: Dregan. I met him and my wolf went crazy, wanting to be close, wanting to rub up on him, wanting to bite him. It makes no sense. Vampire blood and shifter blood don’t mix. In fact, I’d never survive if I ever get a taste of what I so desperately desire. But I can’t get that vampire out of my head, even weeks and months after we left him.

Dregan~
When a little wolf caught my attention, I was surprised but intrigued. The more time he spent in my den, the more I wanted him to stay close. This little innocent wolf was driving me mad, making me want a little taste. But there’s a reason my den has been hiding for hundreds of years, and no matter how badly I crave that little wolf, I can’t have him. I couldn’t risk him getting hurt just to satisfy my needs, so I let him go. Though, nothing I do will make me forget how good he smelled, how delicious I know his blood would taste.

With something cruel and dark hunting Dregan and with Chris’s pack hiding from an evil force, will they ever be able to come together and help one another? Or will they let the evils of the world overtake them and let fear overshadow their desires?

***Keeping Them Unseen is the third book in the Reclaiming Hope series. Each book in the series will feature a different couple, but it’s recommended that you read the books in order because you will get more enjoyment out of the story. It’s a paranormal shifter romance between two men and is intended for Adults Only.***

Blurb
Neo~ The first time I saw him, he took my breath away. He’d looked across the courtyard and made eye contact with me, and I hadn’t been able to look away. The only way I knew how to find him again was by becoming a bestower—a human that allowed vampires to feed from them. Dorian~ His blood was more alluring than any other I’d encountered before, which was saying something. I’d seen, and tasted, my fair share of bestowers. But I’d never smelled one that made me want to forget the rules, forget the consequences. I wanted his blood—and his body. What will happen when human and vampire come together? Will one night of passion be it for the couple or is it possible that there’s more than only lust at play?

Review

Just like with book 2, I had to do a bit of skimming for book 3, not nearly as much, but a little, because the first quarter is all about pain and separation, and I just can’t handle that much angst.

However, I loved this story and the evolution of our characters even further. Without giving away too much, there’s some boats involved and a really lovely new option for our little pack and it’s new set of friends in the vampire coven.

There is a super lot of lovey dovey smexy times in this one as well, but for the most part, I thought it fit in well with the story.

I am excited by the little cliff hanger we’re given at the end of book 3.5 and can’t wait for our story to continue.

The magic and powers and shifter-ness in these books is what keeps me hooked on this series. Usually I’d stay clear of dystopian stories but all the wonderful world building and really well developed characters and relationships has absolutely got me enthralled!

Highly recommended!

I can’t get that green-eyed stranger out of my head. I’m drawn to him… I know what he is to me… but he works for the enemy, for the Ministry, so he’s off-limits. Or at least he was until my worst nightmare started using him as bait. But what can I do? I can’t let him die just because he’s connected to me. I can’t let him die just because that bastard Edward has gotten his claws into him… but what can I do to protect him?

But the others see how sad Felix is, so they want to cheer him up, and what better way to do that then to celebrate the First Moon Festival?

Meet the Arlin pack or catch up with them as they celebrate the First Moon Festival in the Reclaiming Hope world.

Review

I am including the novella that follows book 2, because it’s really sweet and you should absolutely read it if you’re a fan of the series. It gives some more back story and helps move the series along, though it’s not required I do think it helps.

I gotta be honest with you. I skimmed the entire first 50% of book 2 – it was just too dark/depressing/much for me right now. I had not been keeping track of this series and when the audio for book 1 came out it reminded me about how much I enjoyed it and I found 2 more full stories and 2 novellas I had missed! It was like Christmas in May! LOL

But… I’ve never been a fan of dystopian romances and this is that in spades. I simply could not read about all the dark times, the being separate, the evil bad guys doing evil bad things and so on. It was too much. But… I love these characters and I really wanted to make it to book 3 which was really calling to me – so I skimmed. It wasn’t that bad and when I got to (about) the 50% mark our MCs are finally back with one another and working together to solve their problems. Phew. That – at least – wasn’t too bad and I enjoyed reading it from there forward.

You have to be tenacious. These guys keep getting hit – over and over – by really bad things and it affects everything.

However, the author has done a really nice job of giving us a lot of happy to balance that. I will say that I super love the rumbling chests, the super over zealous “mine” possessiveness and the scenting, hugging, and other Wolfy type behavior. I could do with a bit less smexy times – they seem to happen a lot once our guys get together – but – like I said – it’s to balance the ugly so…

The little novella is a nice touch and helps to round out Felix a bit and I can’t wait for his story!

Highly enjoyable and recommended – with the caveat of “be warned – it’s dark and angsty as F.”

Nate~
With the world in chaos around us, the only thing I could do was try to keep Felix safe as we searched for our older brother. We’d been traveling for over two years, searching Ministry camp after Ministry camp and trying to steer clear of the Rebels. I didn’t know what to do when we ran into a whole group of shifters with guns. But then, the huge, gorgeous guy that found us did the unthinkable…

Tre~
At first I thought the two young shifters were trying to sneak up on me, but I soon realized they were only passing through. I was going to send them on their way until I heard the others coming. What was I supposed to do? How else was I supposed to save them? The delicious man and his brother would’ve been killed had I not claimed him.

Will Nate and Tre be able to work together to keep themselves and their packmates alive? Or will they let the cruelty of the outside world tear them apart?

***How We Survive is the first book in the Reclaiming Hope series, but is a standalone novel. Each book in the series will feature a different couple, but the couples will show up throughout the series. It’s a paranormal shifter romance between two men with explicit language and graphic sex intended for Adults Only.

Review

(Book reviewed here previously)

This was so good!!!! It’s a dystopian/war type story which I usually avoid like the plague, but the romance is so sweet and the shifter world is really well-developed and captivating that when a friend recommended this I couldn’t put it down!

It’s dark and not super happy, but there are moments of light and I’m hopeful that book 2 will have some more happiness in it as well.

If you’re looking for a real shifter-centered romance where the MCs act like shifter and not just happen to shift now and then – this is for you.

Justice Volkov is the youngest Alpha Zenith to ever lead the wolf shifters. Following in his father’s large paw prints was a responsibility he met head on. Now at age 33, he is alpha of the alphas. As a direct descendant of the original Siberian pack, his wolf is bigger and stronger than Justice himself is sometimes able to control. His wolf howled long and hard, but Justice kept it inside. It felt like a bass drum beating against his rib cage. The harsh breaths, angry snarls, and the determined pacing inside him were overtaking him. Justice takes his role of leadership and his legacy very seriously. He has little time for romance, not to mention a true mate. His packs are his priority. With a human government trying to regulate them, an uprising of rogue shifters, and a violent team of scientists trying to experiment on them, Justice has his hands way too full.

Chadwick “Wick” Bentley is not enthusiastic when the captain of his escort tells him he has to leave his comfortable London home and go back to the States. As the Vampire King, he has no choice but to get his species back in line before they cause anymore chaos. At over 100 years old, Wick is no one to trifle with, but his smooth, charismatic manner makes him quite unique, despite the negative reputation vampires have. Wick has had nothing but time up to this point. He doesn’t feel the need to make issues pressing. Nothing is urgent in his life. Until he meets Justice. His beloved.

“Natural enemies can’t be mates.” Or so Justice thought. He knows his skepticism and rejection is hurting his mate, so while he fights their connection, Wick gets help from a source very close to Justice to help him win his beloved’s heart. Wick is a force all on his own, but when he’s blessed with a special gift from the Mother herself, not even Justice’s powerful wolf can prevent the prophesy from being fulfilled.

Review
This was my first A.E. Via story and I found it pretty enjoyable. This was a sweet and sexy fated mate story with a twist. The two main characters of the story were Justice the mega alpha werewolf and Wick, the king of the vampires. I always like when fated mates must work for their HEA, there is a little drama between the two at the beginning, but they quickly move past their differences. I liked Wick more than Justice, mainly because in the beginning, Justice was kind of a jerk. There are plenty of sexy times and some good action scenes packed in this rather short story.

This was also the first audio I have heard narrated by Nathaniel Black. I enjoyed his narration for the most part. He did a good job with giving the vampires distinctive voices but the werewolf brothers all kind of sounded the same. He did a good job bringing this story to life.

4 stars for story and narration

For more than five thousand years, Prometheus has been chained in the underworld. Every day, an eagle tears out his liver. Every night, he heals. When Hermes releases him in a gambit to save himself from his father’s wrath, Prometheus must adjust to a world that’s forgotten him. Hunted by the twins, Artemis and Apollo, he finds help in an unexpected place.

Julian Bell is a vampire lost. He left his Louisiana home in 1936 and hasn’t settled since. Ten years ago he followed his best friend to New York, but the country they came to wasn’t the America he left. After losing his friend, he found himself unmoored in a strange land. As he nears his hundredth birthday, he’s realizing how truly alone he is.

When Prometheus and Julian’s paths cross one fateful night, they find in each other a safe path through the shadows.

Review
Prisoner of Shadows is the second book in the Lords of the Underworld series which has so far been a delightful twist on Greek mythology.
Prometheus has been chained up and tortured in the underworld for centuries but due to the schemes of others he is released and forced to try and survive in a world he knows nothing about. I found Prometheus to be utterly charming and sweet. He just seemed to have this innocence about him but as the book progresses his character grows and evolves.
This book also takes vampire lore and put a Greek twist on it as well. Julian is apart of the Hunt, which was tasked by Artemis to help the helpless. Julian tasks himself with protecting Prometheus from those than hunt him. I really enjoyed seeing the relationship bloom between these two.
This book was very enjoyable and can easily be read as a standalone.

Recent Relase: Moonlight Kiss (Vampires of Silver Creek #1) by Kensie King

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43514703-moonlight-kiss?from_search=true

Blurb

We only have one rule: don’t tell humans who we really are. Vampires. But what if the one you’re destined to be with is human?

Jonathan Monroe has been part of his clan of vampires since they settled in Silver Creek. He honors his leaders’ wishes about keeping their secret from humans, though he doesn’t see humans as a threat. They intrigue him. Flesh and blood with real lives, real worries—real heartbeats. But he keeps his distance even though he feels like he’s missing something. When he sees a car slide off the road one night and rescues the man inside, he’s sure he’s found the person he’s meant to be with—even though it goes against everything their kind stands for.

David Reynolds has always taken care of himself. A job, a home, a new start. But coming to Silver Creek left him with a hole he can’t seem to fill. Until he meets Jonathan Monroe. Since Jonathan saved him from near death, he feels a special connection to him he’s never felt with another person in his life. Nothing can deter it—not even Jonathan’s secret. But when he finds out the truth about his savior, his entire existence is put in jeopardy.

Jonathan is willing to do whatever it takes to keep David safe, but it might mean risking everything to stay with the man he’s fallen for.

This steamy M/M romance is set in a contemporary world with vampires. Each book in the series is a standalone story, with a sexy romance and a HEA.

Review

This was good, not great.  I enjoyed the human finding out about vampires thing.  I didn’t enjoy the “keep it a secret or make him a vampire” thing.

The smexy times were good, the drama predictable but not distracting from the romance.  I thought it was funny that the one rule was immediately broken!

My biggest complaint was that it was not full of typical vampire “fun powers” and biting etcetera and it made it seem like being a vamp is super boring and not fun.  I’ll investigate the second book in the series but I’m not very hopeful.

Recent Release: Vampire’s Determined Mate by Alice Cain

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43783897-vampire-s-determined-mate?from_search=true

Blurb

Dominic has lived more centuries than he cares to count. He’s seen empires rise and fall, watched humanity grow and evolve and explode into war time and time again. He’s seen the best and the worst that the world has to give, but the past century has been the hardest.

Faced with an unknown illness, Dominic is running out of time to reconcile with his sentinels—the werewolves he considers his sons—but getting sidetracked by his deliciously sexy neighbor for a few years won’t hurt. He believes that excuse right up to the moment his empathic link to one of his sentinels goes haywire.

Pierce didn’t mean to fall for the sweet, much younger man across the hall, but he sure isn’t going to say no to their developing relationship when Dominic is the one seducing him.

Yet when the young man disappears, tracking Dominic by his cellphone might just be the weirdest experience of Pierce’s life. Can a human with an adult daughter, a responsible job, and a secret kink for biting really be dating a vampire?

Surely Dominic’s belief in the supernatural is simply a personality quirk…because there’s absolutely no way vampires and werewolves can exist. Right?

Review

Ugh! Remember how glowing I was about book 1? Well – this was very disappointing. First, it’s only a little about Dominic the rest is the folks from book 1 – which is fine but we really get almost none of Dominic’s romance and that’s very disappointing.

Also there is a huge plot hole in how Dominic blurts out his Vampire status.

Plus even now that I am done I don’t know why he was sick – so if it was explained it didn’t stand out.

Also the side story of Mac is now officially convoluted and all the lovely simplicity and thoroughness I was excited about in book one has gone. This book is too short for all the twists and turns and it did not make me very happy.

Also who picked the cover? It’s about a millennia old vampire or a 42 year old human – the colors, the model, the pose – all wrong.

2.75 rounded to 3 stars
