Holiday Review: Christmas Ghosts by Jenn Moffatt

Dreamspinner

https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/christmas-ghosts-by-jenn-moffatt-11562-b

Blurb

Dealing with the unexpected loss of his mother isn’t how carpenter Steve Browning planned to spend his Christmas. Hoping her costume jewelry can bring some happiness to others, he takes it to the local community theater, where he runs into his first love, Troy Baxter.

Troy’s trying to help his sister put on a gender-fluid version of A Christmas Carol, but no one on the cast or crew knows which end of a hammer to hold let alone use a power tool. Then a face from the past brings a present-day miracle… one that could lead to the happy future they both thought they gave up back in high school.

Review

This is a mellow second chance at love story, and I wasn’t blown away by it or the MC’s. The story builds up very slowly and the actual relationship-part of it felt sudden and rushed to me. I didn’t quite feel the magic between Troy and Steve.
I also didn’t much care for the fact that Troy had been back home so long, yet he didn’t reach out to Steve, not even when he was dealing with a devastating loss. It doesn’t really help sell the strength of their friendship or the love that supposedly still exists after all these years apart.

Recent Release: The Arrangement – A Homestead Legacy Story By: Alex Jane

Good Reads
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/47326511-the-arrangement?from_search=tru

Blurb
Gabriel Webster’s pack is in trouble. His father’s failing health and his mother’s untimely death mean that the vultures are circling. It won’t be long before his family’s assets are stripped and his pack disbanded. When an offer of help arrives in the form of a marriage of convenience, he has little choice but to accept.

The arrangement would be the perfect solution, if not for one thing. Gabriel is to marry Nathaniel Hayward, the Alpha who was badly injured in the accident that killed his brother ten years before—and the man Gabriel has been in love with for as long as he can remember.

Trapped in a business arrangement masquerading as a marriage—in a strange, empty house with a damaged husband who barely tolerates him — isn’t what Gabriel expected from life.

But sometimes the last thing we want is the beginning of something more.
And an ending can be the start of something beautiful

Review: This is an enjoyable story with likeable characters and a good story line.
My only complaints are that there is not made of the shifter life and very little description of the century (19th) in which the story occurs (these are my personal peeves and they don’t detract from the overall story).
Gabriel is ‘heir’ to a failing pack when he receives unexpected help from his late brother’s best friend, Nathaniel. Nathaniel, an alpha who was injured in the same accident that killed Gabriel’s brother, carries both emotional and physical scars. He proposes a marriage of convenience with Gabriel, who agrees (he has harboured a crush on Nate for a while).
The ‘arrangement’ starts off with Nathaniel keeping his distance, being generally aloof and cold towards Gabriel. But Gabriel perseveres, drawing the stubborn man out of his shell. The men grow closer and things start to work well between them, but there a still few things that need to settled before the men get their HEA.
An enjoyable story!

Review
What a wonderful addition to the world Alex Jane created with the Homestead series. An arranged marriage to save the Pack it’s not what Gabriel wants but it must be done. I love how the story slowly weaves in reconciliation and emotional healing for both Gabriel and Nathaniel. A second chance at love for them. It takes time for Gabriel to begin to understand Nathaniel and why he behaves the way he does. There is a gentle sweetness about the Homestead series which has been carried on in this book. I love that there is a small cameo part for Thaddeus and Samuel. The world Alex Jane creates is so vivid. a pleasure to read

Even if Tom can convince him he’s different, they’ll still have to overcome their age difference and a secret that could destroy their future together

Review
Oh my this book got me right in the feels. I just wanted to hug both Tom and Brian. If you’re anything like me have tissues ready from the beginning. Grief is hard and this book lays it all bare. It’s a beautiful portrayal of healing. It’s not all plain sailing for them but the best things are worth fighting for. The whole family pull together and heal in a lovely heartwarming way. Such a gentle love story between an older man and a younger inexperienced man with a disability. There is a great twist involving Brian which I didn’t see coming and made so much sense. Brought a lot of the story together. I loved catching up with Noel and Lincoln such a wonderful treat. Each of the stories in the links in the chain series can be read can be read on their own but the characters from the previous books have little cameo parts. I think it makes them even more enjoyable if you’ve read them.
I finished this book with a contented sigh after reading the happy ever after ending. Perfect.

Recent Release: An Uncommon Whore By Belinda McBride

Dreamspinner

https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/an-uncommon-whore-by-belinda-mcbride-10735-b

Blurb
An Uncommon Whore Story

Pasha is a slave, whoring for travelers at the most treacherous bar on Warlan. The day Pasha spots the dangerous pirate in the bar, he knows he mustn’t let the stranger slip away, no matter what he must do to draw his attention.

Captain Griffin Hawke spent the better part of a decade searching for his lost king, only to find Helios Dayspring crouched between his legs, swathed in the robes and shackles of a whore. Though he is appalled by the downfall of his king, Grif falls for the sensual creature who has taken his place. After a brutal invasion stripped his people of nearly everything, they desperately need Helios to lead them. But returning him to throne means smuggling him off the planet, disabling the chip that keeps him submissive and forgetful. They will face old enemies, traitors, and greedy opportunists who’d like to strip their new planet of its wealth.

It might mean Grif losing his lover… and they’ve both lost too much already.

Second Edition

First Edition published by Loose Id LLC, January 2010.

Review
This book started off strong with a good amount of action and reveals. Pasha, the whore is discovered to be Helios a missing king and the Captain who finds him happens to be his long time find and companion. The pace slows a little towards the middle of the book as the couple trys to figure a way to get Helios’ memories back. The ending, which had been built up as Helios having to fight to get his throne back was a bit lackluster (but there looks to be a sequel so maybe the fight takes place there).

Occasionally, there comes a book that completely floors you. This was that book for me. Based on the title and blurb I already had an idea that I was going to have to force myself to finish this book.

Man was I wrong!!

I stayed up all night just to finish this one.

I really like the world that Belinda McBride has created. This book was scorching hot while still being romantic. The characters, Griffin and Helios were both very well written, you can just feel the longing, pain and hope that these two shares. Like I said above, my biggest criticism was the ending. It was a pretty big let down for me.
I strongly recommend this book!!

Recent Release: The Doctor’s Orders (Copper Point Medical #3) by Heidi Cullinan

Dreamspinner

https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/the-doctors-orders-by-heidi-cullinan-10703-b

Blurb

Once upon a time Nicholas Beckert was the boy who stole kisses from Jared Kumpel beneath the bleachers. Now Jared’s a pediatrician and Nick is the hospital CEO who won’t glance his way. But everything changes when they’re stranded alone in a hospital elevator. Ten years of cold shoulders melt away, and old passions rekindle into hot flames. Once out of the elevator, Jared has no intention of letting Nick get away. He wants a full, open relationship, which is a step further than Nick is willing to go, and it looks like the same arguments that drove them apart in high school might resurface. Jared’s determined not to let it happen again. He won’t order Nick from his shell—he’ll listen to what he needs to feel safe. Maybe this time he can prescribe his lover a happily ever after.

Review
The Doctor’s Order was a great conclusion(maybe?) to the Copper Point Medical series. There’s been a certain amount of tension between the two main characters, Jared and Nick, throughout the previous two books and we finally get their story. I loved the elevator scene and how that seemed to get Nick to finally prioritize his life and how Jared fits into it. This book was the steamiest book of the series but still pretty tame considering this is a Heidi Cullinan book.
I’ve really enjoyed the variety of characters this series has featured, and I sincerely hope that we get to see more from them in the future.

Recent Release: Four by Tia Fielding

Dreamspinner

https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/four-by-tia-fielding-10643-

Blurb
A Love by Numbers Story When unlikely attraction blossoms between a twentysomething genderqueer tattoo artist and an older, small-town veterinarian, both are forced to face their pasts for a chance at a loving future. Four years ago Padraig Donovan lost his husband, the only man he’d ever been with. Now his life consists of the work he loves, a big empty house, and the possibility of a lonely future. Kaos’s experiments with makeup landed him in the hospital at the hands of his disapproving ex. With nowhere else to turn, he flees to Acker, Wisconsin… and runs into a sexy widower and the kindest man he’s ever met. Padraig and Kaos know there’s something worth exploring between them, and as they raise a puppy and deal with the ups and downs of their respective jobs, they fit into each other’s lives in ways they never expected. Being with Kaos—who is so different than the guys he’s always been attracted to—opens up an exciting new world for Padraig. But can he convince Kaos to trust another man with his body… let alone his heart

Review
This is a slow and steady story about two men who have suffered in their life. Because of this the story contains triggers which are sensitively dealt with. I like that this is not a story where finding ‘the one’ means all is cured. Both Kaos and Padraig work work hard at building their relationship. Bonding over the care of a cute puppy. I think that because the story is so steady where there’s no drama or misunderstandings it took me a while to get into it. When I did I found it easy reading and fell for Kaos’s determination and Padraig’s gentleness. Kaos has found a place where he can be himself and found acceptance. Padraig is ready to let go of his husband who died four years ago and move on. Not having read the first book, Ten, I thought the town of Acker was portrayed very well. There are a lot of characters that I assume were introduced in Ten, especially Makai and Emil with secondary parts. I think Four can be read as a stand alone story.

Recent Release: Prescription for Love (Road to Blissville, #7) by Aimee Nicole Walker

Good Reads

Blurb
What should’ve been an ordinary emergency call turned out to be something extraordinary.

Wanting to distance himself from his toxic parents, Trent Love moved to the quaint town of Blissville to begin a new life. What he finds is blazing chemistry with a hunky fireman who breathes new life into him.

Fearing they’re too different, Tucker attempts to extinguish the spark between them before it can ignite. How could a simple man like him compete with Trent’s life of wealth and privilege? Knowing you shouldn’t want something doesn’t make it go away, and Tucker’s desire for Trent continues to smolder.

Unwilling to accept their relationship is dead on arrival, Trent puts his resuscitation skills to good use. All he wants is a chance to prove he values Tucker’s wealth of character over meaningless material things. What do you get when you mix fire and oxygen: a five-alarm fire or a prescription for love?

Trent’s commitment to freeing himself from poisonous ties kindles a chain of events that have devastating consequences for both men. Is a relationship forged in fire strong enough to overcome these obstacles or is their love doomed to be just another bitter pill to swallow?

Prescription for love is a small-town, opposites-attract romance. It is the seventh book in the Road to Blissville series but reads like a standalone book. It contains sexually explicit material intended for adults 18 and older.

Review

Prescription For Love is another sweet and sexy installment of the Road to Blissville series. There are a few characters from previous books in this one but this can easily be read as a standalone.
I’ve loved every book in this series and all the connecting ones but for some reason this one fell a little short for me. Not to say I didn’t like it because I did but I had trouble connecting with the characters. Tucker and Trent jump almost immediately into a relationship after being separated for a while after a disastrous first date. I would have like a little more build up. This book is super hot!! There are a lot of really well written scenes and a good amount of sexual tension but not much else happens in this story. There’s some drama towards the end but I would have liked it more if it came up earlier in the story but that’s just my preference.
Overall, this is a good book in an amazing series. I strongly recommend it if you are looking for a steamy, light read.

Recent Release: Living on a Dare (Shore Thing #1) by Grace Kilian Delaney

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44835269-living-on-a-dare?from_search=true

Blurb

Stuntman Draven O’Connor never turns down a dare—even if it means getting down on one knee to propose to his former college roommate and friend. The same man he’s been crushing on since the first day they met. The same man that has grown distant over the past year. And the same man who just agreed to be his fiancé.

Julien Bouchard is tired of living a lie. He spent the past year exploring his sexuality in secret, enduring countless dates with women to appease his mother, and dodging his best friend, Draven, who knows everything there is to know about him, except the one thing that could change their friendship. Ready to face his friend, he meets him at a bar and is greeted by an unexpected marriage proposal. The dare isn’t surprising; it’s the scorching hot kiss that sends Julien’s head and heart in a tailspin—and gives him an idea for the perfect plan.

But his plan hits a bump when news of their fake engagement spreads to their families as fast as a wildfire, forcing them to confront their true feelings about each other and hope they don’t get burned.

Review

Phenomenal book. You meet college roommates and best friends Julian and Draven. Both men have pined for the other, though Julian hadn’t realized until later. Julian’s mother and father made me cringe every time I read their parts. Hated how Julian let them treat him, but it’s relatable. Especially the “what ifs”. What started as a harmless prank proposal brought the real feelings to the surface along with Julian learning the extent of his family’s tolerance. Not many steamy moments, but the ones that were there are very hot. I loved reading how sweet and easy flowing things are with the guys. Draven had a really bad relationship that caused him to be very guarded, but both laid their insecurities in their own time. Was a nail biter when Draven had an accident. Happy when things smoothed out for the couple. Definitely recommend this book.

Being bonded to one who rejects you is a painful thing. Will Milan be able to win his husband’s regard? What terrible secret is Lord Raphael keeping, and will Milan be able to discover it before it’s too late?
Or will Milan perish along with his heart?

Review

This book is set as Regency era with a slight Steampunk feel. It’s Omegaverse with hint of mpreg possibility, but did not happen in the book. Milan is from a family in the South, who is arranged to marry Raphael from the North. I was sad for Milan in the beginning for Raphael’s behaviors. The talks about steam powered machines in everyday life was fun to read. I also enjoyed the stark contrasts between the personalities of both men. Other than a VERY rocky beginning, the slow build between the men was wonderful to read. There was a big twist towards the end that surprised me. The background characters were a delight to read and really added to the tone of the book. Overall a very enjoyable read.

Recent Release: Wicked Games (Queen City Rogues #2) by Aimee Nicole Walker

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44390881-wicked-games?ac=1&from_search=true

Blurb

Ryder Jameson and Lucien Clarke have a complicated past: Ryder conserves art; Lucien steals it. Their love-hate relationship spans six years and two continents and has endured multiple heists. Hoping to restore his tarnished reputation and heal his jilted heart, Ryder returns home to Cincinnati. When Lucien suddenly reappears in Ryder’s life, the ancient Shang Dynasty artifact isn’t the only prize he wants to claim.

Something more sinister than stolen art is stirring. Ryder and Lucien must join forces to untangle a web of secrets, lies, and treachery bigger than either of them expected. Trust won’t come easy, but they’ll need to rely on each other because pulling the wrong thread could lead to their death.

Is it fate that keeps bringing Ryder and Lucky together, or are they merely pawns in someone’s wicked games? Will they play for keeps this time or become collateral damage?

Wicked Games is a second-chance romance filled with passion, humor, and intrigue. It’s the second book in the Queen City Rogues series but can be read on its own. Wicked Games contains mature sexual content intended for readers 18 and older.

Review

This was a very gripping story, both the romance and the action plot. I did feel there was a bit too much focus on the suspense plot involving Lucien’s mysterious “employer” and the subsequent danger they find themselves in because of it, where I’d have preferred it if instead the author had taken more time to develop Ryder’s and Lucien’s relationship.

They have a lot of history, off page, and to my mind, they got over their trust issues and heartbreak a bit too fast, leaving too much unspoken when they get back together. This is not to say that things aren’t intense between them, and even at times quite moving as well. I loved how Lucien/Lucky called Ryder “Love” all the time, even when they are still at odds.

I really liked the secondary characters and the banter and flavor they brought to the story. Carmen, Dev and Percy stood out the most and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of them. I’m curious to see where the next book in this series will take us.

m/m, contemporary, action/crime, second chance at love, opposites attract, misunderstanding

Review

I loved Wicked Games so much. This is a story full of all sorts of emotions, drama and suspense. At first, I thought there was going to be a lot of back and forth fighting between Ryder and Lucien before they “made up” but that wasn’t really the case here. After reuniting for the first time there is an explosive scene between the two men (super hotttt). I loved all the references to Romancing the Stone and they play off of Carmen Sandiego.

These two men go on their own adventure to achieve their own happy ending. Aimee Nicole Walker is an amazing storyteller!

While this is a part of the Queen City Rogues series there is actually very little interaction with other characters from the series and can easily be read as a standalone but do yourself a favor and the first book Broken Halos for a little more build up to this one!
