Aramin Decourcey—Min to his few friends—might be the best thief in Amberwich, and he might have a secret that helps him survive the cutthroat world of aristocratic families and their powerful magic users, but he does have one weakness: his affection for his adopted nephew, Harry.

When the formidable Sabadine family curses Harry, Min must accept a suicide mission to save his life: retrieve Kazimir Stone, a low-level Sabadine hedgewitch who refuses to come home after completing his apprenticeship… and who is in Anhaga, a seaside village under the control of the terrifying Hidden Lord of the fae. If that wasn’t enough, Kaz is far from the simple hedgewitch he seems.

With the Sabadines on one side and the fae on the other, Min doesn’t have time to deal with a crisis of conscience—or the growing attraction between him and Kaz. He needs to get Kaz back to Amberwich and get Harry’s curse lifted before it kills him. Saving Harry means handing Kaz over to his ruthless family. Saving Kaz means letting Harry die. Min might pride himself on his cleverness, but he can’t see his way out of this one.

The Hidden Lord might see that he never gets the choice

Review
When is a hero not a hero? Well Aramin (Min) is the perfect example. He is the lovable rogue who despite what he wants you to believe looks out for the innocent and tries, within reason, to do the right thing. But a person has to make a living and if the rich are willing to pay for his skills all the better. Unfortunately his adopted nephew tangles them into a mess that Min can’t easily get them out of. This story has all the ingredients o a wonderful tale. Heroes, thwarted love, danger and daring feats. I loved that Min wasn’t one of those hero’s that had the answers to everything, he just muddled through with skill and luck. Harry has some surprises as well. So does Kas, who is the Cinderella of the story.
Wonderful world building, very evocative description and a good pace. There is enough humour in the story to prevent it becoming too dark. With enough action to keep me engaged. I wouldn’t call this a romance more a fantasy with romantic elements. In this respect there is not very much sex in the story, but in my opinion it doesn’t need it. The story is strong enough on its own.

Justice Volkov is the youngest Alpha Zenith to ever lead the wolf shifters. Following in his father’s large paw prints was a responsibility he met head on. Now at age 33, he is alpha of the alphas. As a direct descendant of the original Siberian pack, his wolf is bigger and stronger than Justice himself is sometimes able to control. His wolf howled long and hard, but Justice kept it inside. It felt like a bass drum beating against his rib cage. The harsh breaths, angry snarls, and the determined pacing inside him were overtaking him. Justice takes his role of leadership and his legacy very seriously. He has little time for romance, not to mention a true mate. His packs are his priority. With a human government trying to regulate them, an uprising of rogue shifters, and a violent team of scientists trying to experiment on them, Justice has his hands way too full.

Chadwick “Wick” Bentley is not enthusiastic when the captain of his escort tells him he has to leave his comfortable London home and go back to the States. As the Vampire King, he has no choice but to get his species back in line before they cause anymore chaos. At over 100 years old, Wick is no one to trifle with, but his smooth, charismatic manner makes him quite unique, despite the negative reputation vampires have. Wick has had nothing but time up to this point. He doesn’t feel the need to make issues pressing. Nothing is urgent in his life. Until he meets Justice. His beloved.

“Natural enemies can’t be mates.” Or so Justice thought. He knows his skepticism and rejection is hurting his mate, so while he fights their connection, Wick gets help from a source very close to Justice to help him win his beloved’s heart. Wick is a force all on his own, but when he’s blessed with a special gift from the Mother herself, not even Justice’s powerful wolf can prevent the prophesy from being fulfilled.

Review
This was my first A.E. Via story and I found it pretty enjoyable. This was a sweet and sexy fated mate story with a twist. The two main characters of the story were Justice the mega alpha werewolf and Wick, the king of the vampires. I always like when fated mates must work for their HEA, there is a little drama between the two at the beginning, but they quickly move past their differences. I liked Wick more than Justice, mainly because in the beginning, Justice was kind of a jerk. There are plenty of sexy times and some good action scenes packed in this rather short story.

This was also the first audio I have heard narrated by Nathaniel Black. I enjoyed his narration for the most part. He did a good job with giving the vampires distinctive voices but the werewolf brothers all kind of sounded the same. He did a good job bringing this story to life.

Recent Release: Chained (Bureau #4) by Kim Fielding

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44769520-chained

Blurb

An agent for the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs? That’s the best job in the world. And it’s enough for Terry Brandt, who doesn’t need personal relationships complicating his life. His newest assignment puts him undercover, investigating a Hollywood agent who may have some evil tricks up his sleeve.

Edge is not the man he appears to be. Although he’s a member of the Hollywood agent’s security staff, his true situation is darker and deeper than that. Ordered to seduce the new prospect, Edge finds himself caught in conflicting loyalties.

Haunted by their pasts and tied up in secrets, neither Terry nor Edge can afford to allow passion to interfere with duty. And with danger dogging them, it’s impossible to envision a future together.

Review

I’m coming into this series a bit late in the game, but I’m absolutely hooked now. I always love the atmosphere and writing style in Kim Fielding’s stories, this one was no different.
She has written this paranormal story from a very original angle, mythology-wise, than we usually get, with a different power-balance.

I really loved enigmatic Edge and seemingly naïve Terry together. They’re drawn to each other, but can they trust each other? Their feelings get quite intense quite fast, but it absolutely works.

There’s such a sense of hopelessness and sadness when we read from Edge’s point of view. His world is so small, his life limited to existing, surviving even, and he sees no way out for him or his brothers. I loved his interactions with Terry, the unexpected connection they feel and how it starts to slowly, dangerously, change Edge’s view of his life.

The mystery about all the goings-on at the mansion, and even at the Bureau, is very well-written and keeps the reader on his toes. Loved the suspense and the surprises the author had up her sleeve at the end!

Review
I have not read the previous books in the Bureau series but in my opinion it’s not necessary as this story stands on its own. Terry Brandt is undercover trying to find out how a Hollywood agent can guarantee fame and fortune. What he didn’t know was that he would find so much more. My heart went out to Edge being singled out from his brothers and abused by the boss. Even though there is very little back story for Edge got more more invested in him but not so much Terry. That might be because I thought Edge was in a Stockholm syndrome situation. Terry is the only person, apart from his brothers, to show him kindness both as a dog or a man. But it is dangerous for Edge to get too close. I liked how this story was set 1989 with all the references to the music and social situation at the time. This story has intrigued me so much that I’m tempted to read or listen to the first three books, available in an omnibus edition.

Recent Release: Sun Shift One: No Sanctuary by Bailey Bradford

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42097017-sun-shift-one

Blurb

One shifter, waiting for others to join him in the sanctuary he’s built. One lone wolf, broken and close to death. Cali and Jacob find more than sanctuary; they find hope and the possibility of a love that can endure throughout time– if they can survive the evil coming for them and those seeking safety with them. But there might not be any truly safe place for shifters…

Cali has had to be cautious around humans, who have no clue that shifters exist. He’s made a success of himself, and now he’s ready to escape from humanity. The sanctuary he’s had built will be home not only to him but to any other shifters looking for a safe place to live. He’s spared no expense. Now all he needs is for others to join him. Maybe he’ll even have his deepest wish come true– that he will find another lion shifter to share the kind of the abiding love his parents had.

When the perimeter alarms go off, Cali races to see if there’s a lion waiting for him. What he finds is a lone wolf, beaten, battered, and on the verge of death. Cali rescues the wolf and brings him to the refuge. Whatever ails the other shifter is an unknown to Cali, and it takes all of his skill– and a lot of luck– to keep the lone wolf alive.

Jacob is a haunted wolf and a tormented man. He’s seen things no one should ever have to see and survived something more tragic than most people or shifters could imagine. A mystery illness keeps bringing him to the brink of death, but somehow, he has found sanctuary with a lion shifter determined to help him live.

Jacob isn’t what Cali expected, but a bond forms between them, and through that bond, emotions that neither man can deny.

But nothing in life comes easy. Other shifters find sanctuary, Jacob’s illness continues to weaken him, and an enemy greater than any Cali had ever expected comes for those he’s trying to protect.

Even hiring the best security firm in the field might not help save Cali and the man he loves, or the Pride of mixed-species shifters he’s building.

Review
I am looking forward to this new series!
While this isn’t as specific a “fated mate” as some, it’s definitely there. There are some crazy bears who I’m hoping will find mates soon as well as some pretty damaged but still loveable wolves and other types of shifters.

There is a fair amount of excitement and some bad guys to beat as well as some hot smexy times to be had.

All in all a good start to a new series!

Retro Review: Shattered Secrets (In the Shadow of the Wolf #1) by R.J. Scott , Diane Adams

Blurb

Rob is a cop and has just passed his thirtieth birthday, being promoted to a special police task force specializing in wolf / human cases. He sees it all. The seedy underbelly of city life, the fights, the murders, and the parts of human / wolf interaction that people would rather ignore. He meets a young man, Jamie, at a club and embarks on the hottest one night stand of his life. Little does he know that his lover is a shifter. He has no worries with wolves, but interspecies relationships are not on his to-do list.

When a case involving kidnappings of young werewolves lands on Rob’s desk the ugly face of the werewolf sex trade is something he has to deal with. With Jamie seemingly at the centre of it all can Rob push past his prejudices and keep his lover alive?

Review

I’m not sure why I hadn’t read this before but I love RJ Scott and have enjoyed Diane Adams work in the past and I ran across a mention of this somewhere… you get the picture.

In any case I really enjoyed this!  There are a few plot holes – like the “I don’t want to date a shifter because we wouldn’t be equals” that are small and don’t really interfere with my overall enjoyment.

There is a fair amount of hot smexy times and “mine” / mate feelz.  There is an exciting crime to solve and some shifted times as well.

Overall I read through this quickly and can’t wait to move on to book 2!

Highly recommended to shifter fans!

Is it better to risk it all… or never know what could have been?

After surviving an abusive childhood, Vulcan remade himself upon arriving in Los Angeles, California. He became a blacksmith for the paranormal community and strives to earn the respect of the vampire covens and werewolf packs that call LA home. He also prevents the pain of loss by keeping everyone at arm’s length.

But he never planned on meeting a former Roman soldier by the name of Marcus Cassius Vespillo. Something sparks between them and turns into a friendship he never considered possible. He can’t deny his intense attraction to the intelligent, courteous, ancient vampire. And it scares him.

Though Vulcan is wary of seeking more with Cassius, an attack leaves him at death’s door and forces him to reexamine his priorities. But Cassius has his own secret, one that promises tragedy and loss. And if that wasn’t enough, a slayer arrives in the States, one with a bloody connection to Cassius… and Vulcan himself

Review
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The world building is great. Only a few humans know that vampires, werewolves and gouls exist. Those who do work for them in someway. The story started by setting the scene for Vulcan then jumped forward. Cassius is a wonderful character. A very ancient vampire who falls madly in love with Vulcan. Theirs is a slow paced love story and it needs to be slow to get the most from the building romance. Due to his past Vulcan is hesitant to get involved with anyone let alone an ancient vampire. Running alongside the romance is a mystery one that climaxes just as Vulcan let’s Cassius past his defences. All in all I loved the new take on this trope. The epilogue is a wonderful ending.

Release Day Review: Fox and Wolf By Julia Talbot

Apex Investigations: Book One
Werewolf PI Dylan Weems is a hired to solve the murder of a client’s customer. As an ex-cop, Dylan is the perfect man for the job, but he doesn’t expect the complication of alluring fox shifter Rey.
Ever since finding the dead body of one of his clients, Rey Mercier’s life is a mess, and he needs help desperately. He has no idea why he’s the target of some ruthless people or what he did to anger them. Hopefully Dylan and his motley crew of shifters at Apex Investigations can help him find out, but first Dylan and Rey have to deal with literal corporate tigers and dire crocodiles shifters… all while deciding what to do about the mate bond that’s becoming undeniable. And is that even possible between fox and wolf?

Review

This was a very enjoyable shifter romance with an interesting mystery subplot. A quick and entertaining read.

Rey is a bit of a mess at first, and obviously in way over his head with big bad dire … creatures out to get him. He hires a PI to help him investigate and hopefully solve the mystery of the sudden threat against his life. Dylan, the PI in question, doesn’t need long to become totally smitten with Rey, though both men are thrown by their unexpected connection. Dare they think the M-word (mate)?

I loved Dylan’s protective side and his use of endearments when addressing Rey, which he does very quickly. They are super sweet together. Dylan and Rey have a bit of an opposites attract vibe going, with emphasis on the attract. I was glad that their relationship was balanced, and that Rey could also be there for Dylan and help him out, so it wasn’t just a case of the bigger shifter protecting the smaller, seemingly more vulnerable one. The investigation itself didn’t always hold my interest, but I did really like how the bond between the two MC’s built up as well as the interactions between Dylan, Rey and Dylan’s pack.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing, and prejudices muddled the waters for a while, but love, and the good guys, win in the end.

The world-building is a bit unclear, though I do like that there are all kinds of shifters with different abilities and characteristics in this universe. There also seem to be some racial prejudices between the different animal shifters, which makes “inter-species” relationships slightly more challenging, as Dylan and Rey find out. Dylan belongs to an atypical pack, led by an alpha wolf, but with members from different shifter species. So it’s a kind of chosen family story.

We get to know and care for the entire pack, the author doing a wonderful job of creating interest in the stories that are to follow in this new series.

Review by Morgan

This was sweet if kind of all over the place. I loved the first time/virgin thing, didn’t quite understand why Flynn was on Earth, thought the sugar fiending was hysterical and thought the workaround clever.

It was odd that everyone besides Flynn and Derek were assholes – including the fairy side kick, both families, and Derek’s co-workers. The only nice guy is the roommate.

All in all a fun holiday read.

Review by Mary

I wasn’t sure what to make of this story at the start but as the story  progressed I grew to love it. Derek is not a confident young man. He is slightly overweight and a virgin. Flynn is strange but also alluring. Once Derek gets his courage up to ask Flynn out they realise they are made for each other. So self centred. The whole story is light and has the feeling of a winter fairy tale. Derek’s ex boyfriend, Gregory, is a great villain of the story, a pantomime villain, And there is even a pixie and fairy dust! What more could you want than love and magic at Christmas.

Release Day: His Consort by Mary Calmes

release day review

Blurb

A new life in New Orleans is all Jason Thorpe had hoped: his quaint little store attracts a devoted staff and his warm, loving heart grants him a loyal circle of friends. He’s perfectly content, having left behind the chill of a confusing and danger-filled night in Washington, until he discovers something unbelievable lurking in the steamy darkness of the shadowy streets of the Vieux Carré, something that turns out to be terrifying… and utterly mesmerizing.

The prince of the vampyrs, Varic Maedoc, is visiting New Orleans when he finds out the man who once helped his counselor is there in the Quarter. He thinks to simply meet and thank Jason—until he lays eyes on him. Varic’s devoted himself to protect the honor of his race, and he’s never wanted a mate before… but he immediately knows he must have this man, and no one else will do.

Varic may want to bring Jason safely into his world, but someone who doesn’t like the human’s soothing influence on vampyrs has deadly plans that would disrupt Varic’s dreams. Now, unable to tell friend from foe, Jason finds himself wondering how to hold on to the prince’s heart when he’s fighting for his life.

Review by Karen

I don’t think anyone can bring the soulmate/fated mate vibe to a story as well as Mary Calmes can. There’s no doubting the all-encompassing, blissful feelings that well up between Jason and Varic. I loved that they are so drawn to each other from the first, but even more that it’s not just about chemistry or power, but true love and appreciation of the other person that makes them so strong together.

I’m impressed by the amount of detail that went into the world-building and the setting of this story, bringing into it such history and a great cast of secondary characters. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of them in a follow-up story! We get to know Jason really well from the first, whereas our prince remains far more enigmatic. It takes a while for him to make an appearance “on page”. The author sure understands how to build up anticipation!

Jason is an incredibly endearing hero, strong and capable, but with a soft heart underneath. Varic, he who has it all and has had it for what seems like an eternity, needs to swiftly adjust to what it means to have a modern-day man for a mate, and how vulnerable that makes him feel. It’s not as easy as he might have expected, but his devotion to Jason never wavers.

The story is excellently paced with various vampyr political intrigues to muddy the waters for our heroes. Danger lurks in unexpected places and it’s hard to know who to trust. I didn’t see the threat coming at all! It was brilliant! Though less so for our MC’s, of course…

This was such an enjoyable read, I was totally swept away by it. It was all so intense! Loved it!

Review by Morgan

I’ll start out by re-iterating that I’ve been a huge fan girl of Mary for a long time… I was stoked to find out she’s writing paranormal again because I LOVE that part of her writing – more? – than her contemporary – it’s a toss up because Marshal’s really has my heart … But this story was all over the place.

There is a TON of world building so I hope we get a series out of this – there are certainly a lot of characters to play with – legions of them – but I couldn’t really tell you a lot about the prince because he does not play a big role in this romance about the prince of the vampyr.

Fans of the author will find her quintessential “aw shucks” MC in our human. He’s ex special forces so he can take care of himself, but he’s got a heart as big as the sun. He literally wants to save everyone and he charms his enemies along the way.

There are so many new words and rules and people and a new conflict between the made vamps and the royal vamps – a lot of it went over my head and once the story shifted from Washington state to New Orleans I admit to finding it hard to keep track of who and what and where and definitely why.

Our couple spends very little time together. I’m totally on board with the “mine” but I there was a lot of time that I was wishing they’d spend some time not having sex and get to know one another. The way the story is laid out I almost thought Hadrian or Tiago was going to be the other MC – we spend more time with them than the prince.

In any case, it was a fun story and definitely had all the Mary charm – but it felt a bit scattered and not as cohesive as some of her other stories.

Just a Little Love Bite: A long-awaited-for vacation ends in disaster, forcing one man to make the ultimate life and death choice.

Eric Young and Daren Creston met when both attended a pride parade in Denver with friends. They’d immediately hit it off. Three months later, city-dwelling Eric moved in with small-town living Daren, and they made their home in Colin City. Seven years later, they are still very much in love. After years of saving, Eric and Daren head to a dude ranch for a little sun, fun, and sexy cowboy roleplay in the bedroom. The place has amazing reviews, is run by vampires, and was recommended by their wolf shifter buddies. After a tragic riding accident leaves Daren’s life hanging perilously by a thread, Eric is willing to do anything to save his lover. Death, one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, hears Eric’s cries. His interest is piqued. When Death makes the pretty human an offer–the price, Eric and Daren’s souls–will Eric take it? And if he does, will Daren ever be able to forgive him?
Reader Advisory: This is a M/M/M menage.

Review

Daren and Eric are a human couple who have appeared sporadically throughout the Wolves of Stoneridge series. They decide to vacation at a vampire ranch based on the recommendations of their paranormal friends. Sadly, while there tragedy befalls Daren and Eric not willing to his love begs for help stating he will do anything. Death, one of the Four Horsemen, over hears Eric’s pleading and decides to intervene and offer his assistance, but both men will need to tie themselves to Death for eternity.

Anybody familiar with this series knows that these books are easy, light reads. So far there are over 100 books in the connecting series and each story has managed to be unique (granted there are still a few I haven’t read). The one thing I don’t like about most of the newer books is that they tend to have very rushed endings. The same happened in this one. After searching for one of Death’s missing demons, they find him with the help of alpha’s Declan and Kontra and the warlocks Draven and Tim. The ensuing “battle” is over in a page or two but then so is the book. We still don’t really know who or what was behind the capture, but it looks like it will be resolved in future books. This series is still a favorite of mine. Death and his two human mates made for a great, steamy little story.
