Recent Release: The Wrath of Wolves (Dark is the Night #3) by Kelley York and Rowan Altwood

Blurb
Preston Alexander has wanted to see the world for as long as he can remember. Now, an opportunity has presented itself. A supposedly haunted item needs transporting clear across the Atlantic. James and William can’t take it, so Preston jumps at the chance. He may not know nearly as much about the dead as his friends, but surely it can’t be that difficult. Besides, he won’t be alone: Benjamin will be at his side, and together, they’ve always been able to handle anything.

After abandoning his new job and the strained relationship with his father, and still grieving the loss of his mother, Benjamin Prichard is eager to figure out his place and purpose in life. He isn’t keen on the idea of travelling across the world, but if it means staying with Preston and keeping him out of trouble, he’s willing to give it a go.

But their trip isn’t exactly the holiday they’d hoped for. Not only is their cargo possessed, but it’s also sought after by a mysterious group led by a man with supernatural abilities far beyond what either of them thought humanly possible.

They aren’t just being trailed; they’re being hunted.

This time, the true danger is as much the living as it is the dead.

Review
The Wrath of Wolves is a perfect, suspenseful, scary, and scarily amazing addition to the Dark is the Night series! It answers some questions about all the things that go bump in the night and some other threats out there, but raises even more and introduces several intriguing new secondary characters (please pretty please can we have more N & S?). The reader is mercifully spared a cliffhanger ending, but still left so so needy for more stories in this universe.

This is the first full-length story that doesn’t revolve around James and William, but it holds up beautifully next to A Light Amongst Shadows and A Hymn in the Silence. I liked Preston and Benji fine before, but I utterly adore them now. They were a bit of a surprise, so different from James and William, but just as strong in their devotion and love for each other and absolutely wonderful characters in their own right. I’d be hard put to name a favorite MC at this stage.

In The Wrath of Wolves Benji and Preston are faced with mysteries and threats on different levels, some of this world and some… decidedly not so. And perhaps even more dangerous for it. I loved the suspense and the scary, threatening atmosphere throughout the story, as well as the action scenes, which were excellently paced and very, very bad for my blood pressure.

The love story builds up very slowly, though we are never in any doubt about the strength of Benji and Preston’s feelings for each other. The longing and intense emotion these two young men feel for each other is only hinted at for the longest time, but picking up the clues left by the authors was the sweetest torture. Preston’s feelings are slightly more obvious than Benji’s which makes everything even more of a tease for the observant reader. Will they, won’t they…? And when?! The moment they finally cross that line was just…everything! Such a pivotal scene, a shot to the heart.

Loved this and need more!

All while an unforeseen gift of history creates rumbles of change in the packs, and drives Mercy Hills to an announcement that will rock shifter society to the roots.

Review

You have to be tenacious with these stories but they’re all really good.

I think the author could use a strong hand with editing and the stories would be improved, but I do love the characters and their journey to growth.

This story did not emphasize the MCs as much as I’d wish but their story was sweet in the end. For this, I had to mark it down in ratings – I read these for the romance and that wasn’t as much the focus as in the other books.

I’ve really enjoyed watching where this band of shifters has gone over time.

I love Nick J Russo and so listening to these (long) stories is very enjoyable.

Prince Owin

Being a fierce predator—not at all adorable, despite my graceful stature—the last thing I needed was a bodyguard. Especially a wolf shifter, whose presence alone was an insult to my princely principles. As Prince of the Ocelot Shifters, I prided myself on my infallible feline instincts, uncompromisable dignity, and flawless fashion sense. If having a canine follow me around at all times wasn’t bad enough, I now faced the most important moment of my entire life. The time had come to prove I was worthy of my crown. If only I could find a way to get rid of the pesky bodyguard.

Grimmwolf

When the King of All Shifters asked me to guard Prince Owin, I admit I had no idea what to expect. Cat shifters tend to be a little intense, not to mention kinda cranky. Owin was no exception, though he seemed crankier than most. Being his bodyguard was proving to be one of the greatest challenges of my life—but not nearly as great as convincing him there was something special between us. When Owin is faced with a perilous quest to prove his worth, I was determined to keep him safe, even if the same couldn’t be said of my heart.

Review

OMG I loved this so much! This reminded me so much of Charlie’s Soldati Prince (which I adored!)
It had that same humor, otherworldly flavor, adorkable characters, mild adventure and loads of magic!

The smexy times were hot and the romance developed at a lovely, sweet, pace.

Highly recommended!

Greg is a great choice for this and thoroughly enjoyable!

Adair was tired of waiting. He knew he had a mate, although they’d never met, and his waiting wasn’t made any easier watching Tobias snuggling close with his two mates. He’d thought a lot of the smaller wolf at one time.
All he had was the company of his two brothers and endless patrols trying to keep the Cloverleah pack lands safe. A trip to Claude’s with his brothers one night has some unexpected but pleasant consequences, and after an initial misunderstanding, Adair is suddenly thrust into the world of magic and the demands of a relationship.
Vassago’s never had a chance to be proud of who he was. As the second son of the king of the djinn and being a lot smaller than his father or brother, Vassago spent a lot of time on the human realm, avoiding his family and those who had nothing better to do than bully him.
After spending a horrible nine months trapped in Jake Poindexter’s body, he knew he had to find his potestatem before he could claim his mate. Unfortunately, that was easier said than done. When help is offered, he’s hesitant to take it, but the lure of finally being in his mate’s arms was too strong to ignore.
The troubles hitting Cloverleah are falling thick and fast. Insane plans of wiping out all paranormal life isn’t confined to a few errant humans. It’ll take the steadfast nature of a wolf shifter who still has a habit of saying the wrong thing and the magic of a djinn who’s struggling to believe in himself before these two will find their HEA.
Please note: The book contains M/M adult content. If this isn’t your preference, please don’t buy. Each book in the Cloverleah Pack series can be listened to as a stand-alone. However, to fully appreciate the relationships between secondary characters, it might be wise to listen to the other books in the series in order.

Review

OOOOO I love Vassago!

While it looked like Vassago might have been a sneaky, almost bad-guy in the last book, we find out that he’s really, really not. He’s super sweet and very misunderstood in his own world and amazingly powerful.

Adair, if anything, seems to follow the Kane “Stick my foot in my mouth at every turn” pattern and ends up making Vassago mad more often than not. However, both these guys end up being really sweet together – as you’d expect.

There’s a lot of fun “powers” in this – djinn can do almost anything really – and that was a great addition to the Cloverleah pack. (The markings Adair gets are hysterical!)

It was great seeing Luke and Kurt and Tobias again – as well as the other couples. I really like Vadim and we got to see a lot of him, as well.

This was another great addition to the series with a few surprises and lots of magic!

Nathaniel and Chasan are no ordinary angels.

Destiny chose them to be twin flames, fated mates. But Nathaniel has avoided Chasan for nearly a thousand years.

When sent to Earth on a mission to live and work together, Nathaniel comes face-to-face with his destiny. Short-tempered, petulant, and grumpy, he hates the idea of being fated to anyone and has chosen an existence of isolation rather than spending time with the calm, kind, and serene Chasan.

Blurb
Shifter and Vampire True Mates story.

Alek’s older brother, Justice—the Alpha Zenith—was the first shifter to mate with a vampire in many generations, and it was believed the rare, fated pairing would stop at him. But, it hadn’t. Aleksei ‘Alek’ Volkov was second beta, next in succession to the most powerful shifter in the world. He was proud of his title and he took his duties seriously. It was all he had. Until his true mate literally showed up on his doorstep.

While his brother—the overachiever—excelled at having a vampire as a mate, Alek wasn’t that optimistic he would. He wasn’t averse to love, and he’d often thought of how different his life could’ve turned out if he’d ever experienced the emotion. His life was a mess and he’d worn a mask of stability for a majority of that time, only showing his siblings and pack what they needed to see—a strong Volkov alpha. Not the damaged man he was, with a tortured soul and a rogue wolf.

Alek dropped his heavy head in his hands. Now, for some reason, I’ve been granted a true vampire mate. And not just any vampire. The intimidating Belleron Liatos. Lord High to the King and the leader of his army.

Belleron ‘Bell’ Liatos had come to the states for one reason—his best friend and Vampire King, Chadwick Bentley. He certainly didn’t come to be pounced on by a wolf that could act independently of its master. Not only was his destined cherished a complicated and confused man; but he was also unaware of the powerful presence that lurked in the shadows of his soul. Bell didn’t know he’d be the key to unlocking an exceptional triad that would play a critical role in fulfilling the prophesy.

This story DOES NOT contain or even mention MPREG.
No multiple pairings. No cliffhangers. Ends with a very HFN.

Warning: This book is M/M paranormal: If you DO NOT like alpha men shifting into large wolves, or vampires feeding from their destined beloveds, than this may not be the novel for you.

Review

I love this series and I love this book! I don’t have enough superlatives to explain how much, but the world building is fantastic. Just enough uniqueness to make it stand out in the world of paranormal romance, but enough familiar themes to keep a die-hard fan like me appeased.

There were times when I definitely felt like this should be labeled as a ménage, I should warn you, however. The character building is so strong that the “beasts” inside Alec take on their own personalities and the way the author describes their interaction with one another and with Bell sometimes felt like separate beings at times… a lot of the time.

I found the explanation for Alec’s situation really well done and the way Bell manages him and his issues was also really good. I also loved that Bell never felt as “submissive” to Alec as I maybe sometimes felt with Wick and Justice.

There is a TON of smexy times, but definitely less than book 1 – which for me – was a good thing.

After having listened to book 1 on audio I can say I hope the author uses the same narrator and I can’t wait for it to make it to audio!

I think you need to read book 1 to really appreciate this, but I bet it’s fine as a standalone if you haven’t.

(I didn’t feel this was an HFN, FWIW – it felt very complete to me.)

Highly recommended!

Blurb
Calvin is good at two things: stealing and being the worst boyfriend
ever. He can’t help his sticky fingers, even though Rafe has pleaded with him
to stop. When a job goes horribly wrong, Calvin’s fate is in the hands of his
silversmith boyfriend.
Rafe has done everything he can to put distance between himself and the
restrictions of being a princeling. He has a craft, a shop, a shifter boyfriend,
and lives a completely disreputable life.
But to save Calvin from spending Solstice in a cage, Rafe will have to
step up and face his father, head of the city guard. Rafe’s father has had
enough of Calvin flouting the law. Shifters are supposed to be collared in the
city.
Calvin finally knows what to make for Rafe for solstice, though it breaks
the promise they made to each other….

Review

Calvin and Rafe have a special relationship but Rafe’s family is not pleased about the two men and how they are living. They believe that Calvin should know and stay in his place far away from Rafe. Yet the bond that Calvin and Rafe have cannot be broken or can it? Will one last job cost Calvin the love he shares with Rafe or will the two find a way to happiness?

This is a sweet and fast paced story. The characters are engaging, and I was pulled into the story right from the start. Love and trust is strong between Calvin and Rafe. Each man shows what a good man he truly is and is more than willing to sacrifice everything for the other man. The author has created a wonderous world full of magic and emotions. I wish it had been longer and that we got to see more form this couple.

Recent Release: The Guppy Prince (The Silver Isles #1) by C.W. Gray

Good Reads

Blurb

Dover Rees is a guppy tailed merman and the youngest child of the King of the Southern Silver Isles. Despite the lofty title, he fits in better with the other guppy tailed working class than with his royal siblings. Dover spends his days secluded in his creek, successfully avoiding the King’s court and all the judgmental nobles there. Then, the most wonderous and horrible thing happens. He hears the mating call and knows his alpha is waiting for him.
Ben Elliot is just a human trying to get by in a small tourist beach town. He has his art and a few good friends, and that should be enough, right? Wrong. Coming home to a quiet house and an empty bed starts to wear on him, but none of the omegas he knows appeal to him. Until a storm knocks him off his fishing boat and he’s rescued by a mysterious, blue-haired omega.

Together, Dover and Ben forge a bond strong enough to stand against the storm of corrupt lords, court politics, and a cursed king.
Author’s Note: Around 47,000 words. This is a paranormal, merman, mpreg insta-love story with no angst and no cheating, just a HEA. There are a few potty mouths, so beware. 18+ readers only, please. It is book one in The Silver Isles series.

Review

This was just too much.  Too sappy.  Too long.  Too much side story.  Too many characters.  Too many cheesy jokes.  Just too much.

I loved the idea but it quickly grew tiring.

Good Reads

Blurb

Attain Walsh knew something was odd at Nicholas Lindson’s ranch. Ever since his best friend married Sandra, things have turned…strange. Wanting to get to the bottom of things, Attain begins to show up unexpectedly. He’s shocked to stumble across Nicholas making out with someone other than his wife. The idea that his buddy was a cheat had never crossed his mind. Unable to help himself, Attain confronts Nicholas…and learns that the marriage is a sham. Both Nicholas and Sandra have separate partners. Not only that, but his friend’s partner—Bodb—isn’t human. He’s a gargoyle. When Attain meets more of them, he’s shocked to find himself attracted to one of the huge beasts—a dark-blue gargoyle named Ssimeas. Then he learns about mates—someone the gargoyle considers the other half of their soul—and Ssimeas claims that Attain is his. But Attain is a confirmed bachelor. He has no desire to be anyone’s soul mate. Can Attain convince the gargoyle to leave him alone? Or will the male’s flattering pursuit sway him into turning his life upside down?

Review

This is a new Charlie Richard’s based on her paranormal gargoyle series. It is pretty much as you would expect. The main character who falls for the gargoyle identifies as straight and has a very conservative family. There is not a lot of plot nor relationship building. It is pretty much exactly what the other gargoyle stories are. However if you enjoyed those, you’ll enjoy this. I should note however that the female in the story is awful and unnecessarily so I don’t think she behaved in any way like a normal person. And it absolutely detracted from my enjoyment. I would round it from 2 1/2 to 3 stars but only just barely I did feel that this was egregious. Three stars.

Recent Release: For a Unicorn’s Happiness (Legendary Shifters #2) by Catherine Lievens

Extasy Books

https://www.extasybooks.com/catherine-lievens/978-1-4874-2625-5-for-a-unicorns-happiness/

Blurb

Toby has known little more than loneliness since he was taken from his home and his family was killed. He’s a prisoner, forced to heal the members of the gang that bought him from the men who kidnapped him.

Until he’s not.

Camden didn’t expect to find out that Sam’s brother, the brother who was sold to a gang, is his mate. He’s not sure where to go from here. Toby is understandably wary and cautious, and most of the time, he won’t let Camden close enough to talk to him. Camden doesn’t have a problem giving him the time and space he needs, but they might not have much of it.

When the envoy from another pack arrives and demands Camden give up one of the unicorn shifters, Camden refuses, even though he knows the Rosewood pack doesn’t stand a chance. The pack is small, and its members aren’t warriors. He’s not about to give Toby or Sam up, but he has no idea how his people are going to deal with this—or if they’ll make it out alive.

Review

I did not read the first book but I don’t think you need to. This was pretty standard fated mate stuff but the romance was definitely weak. There is a lot of back and forth between the two MCs and not much to grab on to and trust that they would have anything in common or even really like one another.

I found it refreshing that Camden isn’t as “alpha” as you’d expect, but Sam is definitely hard to like.

All in all I was not really invested in this and I doubt I’ll look into more from the series. I was a little intrigued by the upcoming possible stories of the phoenixes but… I’m just not sure they’re enough to compel me to read on.
