Book 2 – Home in his Arms

Blurb

Ollie has always known he’s adopted, but he had no idea he was a freak.
Imagine the shock he got when he found out he’s not quite human… The only thing he can think to do is run before the only family he’s ever known discovers his secret, and toss him aside like the woman that birthed him.
As if finding out you’re a four-legged creature that howls isn’t bad enough, someone’s snatched him and is holding him captive.
Ollie is terrified and losing hope, and has no idea if he’s ever going to see his family again. Until he hears a voice in his head that promises him he’s safe.
Ronin is a man on a mission. As a former soldier, he’s used to saving people and dangerous situations. He’s off to track down the person that hurt his twins mate, and the last thing he’s looking for is someone for himself. However, fate has a funny way of intervening.
Ollie is everything he never knew he was looking for. Ronin is the intense alpha Ollie finds himself drawn to. Both discover they need each other before they even meet.
Can Ronin keep his mate safe, or will he lose Ollie before they even have a chance to enjoy forever?

Review
I did not enjoy this series as much as the Whitfell series or Betrayed. I think this is two books that maybe should be one and there isn’t enough story for two complete books.

This is a typical alpha/omega, mpreg, shifter, hurt/comfort story and book 1 is a bit more coherent than book 2.

Book 2 is an extension of book 1 and should be read in order doesn’t make as much sense. Devon (from book 1) has some reasonable motivations for his actions while Ollie does not. The family reunion simply didn’t explain things away and I was definitely frustrated by this book.

Book 1 – 3.5 stars

Book 2 2.5 stars

Dominik is a man without a home.
After everything he holds dear is stolen from him by the one person he thought would never betray him, Dominik leaves the only home he’s ever known and the pack that he was raised to lead.
The choice is easy… or maybe there isn’t one.
After wandering, Dom finally finds a place that makes him want to put down roots. Along with his best friend, the only one to stand by him, they create a pack like no other. One where everyone is welcome.
He has a home, now all Dom wants is a quiet life… that is, until he meets Elias.
Dom never thought he would find another home, but maybe fate has a plan and he’s right where he’s supposed to be.
This series has little to no angst, and lots and lots of fluff! Absolutely no cheating. If you want angst this is not the series for you. These are 25k short and sweet reads.

Review

This was the first book I read by this author (authors) and it led me to read more! I was absolutely in the mood for something super light and fluffy and this totally delivered!!!

The story line is pretty predictable – shifter, alpha/omega, mpreg, fated mates… you get the idea. But the characters are really great and the story flows really nicely. I think the writing duo has a bit of an edge over the authors on their own.

Recommended!

Retro Review: Whitfell Brothers Series by Skye Richmond

Malek
(Whitfell Brothers #1)

Blurb
Running from his problems might just lead Axel to his future.
Axel has done the stupidest thing ever. He kissed his straight best friend at the guy’s stag do and now he’s run away to the Lake District to lick his wounds.
All he wants, in fact, all he’s ever wanted is a Prince of his own.
Who knew running would lead Axel straight to his very own fairytale? No really. His new mate, yeah, that’s a thing, lives in a magical valley and there’s a castle and he’s telling Axel it’s going to be the two of them forever.
Did Axel mention in this fairytale he can have babies and his mate turns into a wolf? Only it’s not a fairytale, it’s really happening.
Malek has travelled the world searching for his mate, and now he’s actually here, in Malek’s family’s forest. It’s turning out to be the best day of his life.
No angst, and lots of fluff.

An MM Shifter Mpreg Romance.

Review

Again I am surprised by an author/series I’d not met before and psyched because I enjoyed it so much!

The author promises little to no fluff and they deliver! The focus of both books (in fact all that I’ve read by this author) is an omega finding and binding with their super sweet Alpha then getting pregnant and freaking out about it.

These are lovely light stories that are (mostly) well written and fun for fans of mpreg.

Don’t expect anything deep and the story line is predictable. But very enjoyable characters make it worthwhile.

4 of 5 stars for book 1

Malachi (Book 2)

Blurb

When he decided to surprise his boyfriend for a weekend, Alfie got the shock of his life. Apparently, the clock struck twelve and his prince—or in this case an earl—became a frog.
But as the saying goes, you have to kiss a couple of frogs…
Only now, Alfie’s trust had been shattered and he just wanted to lick his wounds. He called one of his older brothers, Axel, for help, not realising that doing so would change his life in ways he never imagined.
Malachi Whitfell had watched his older brother find his mate and settle down. And as much as he wished it wasn’t the case, he’s completely jealous.
When he got the call to help his brother’s mate, he didn’t expect to meet his… Axel’s baby brother. Now all he had to do was get Alfie to see that not all guys are like his ex and he’d found the one person who will never hurt him.

Life is as close to perfect as it could until Alfie’s frog showed up again… but Alfie’s already found his knight in shining armour—or wolf skin…
VERY LITTLE ANGST, AND LOTS OF FLUFF.

Review
I didn’t like this nearly as much as book 1. While I enjoyed the hurt/comfort of Alfie’s story, I wanted to know more about him and his relationship and less about the freaking out over becoming pregnant.

He and Malachi don’t get to know each other very well and that was less enjoyable.

3 of 5 stars for book 2

Mikhail (book 3)

Blurb

Mikhail knew he found his mate the first moment he set eyes on Rowan. There was only one problem—Rowan doesn’t believe in fated mates.
Will Mikhail be able to change his mind? Or will Rowan run as far away as he can before he gets a chance?
Rowan doesn’t realise Mikhail will do whatever it takes to prove to him that they’re destined to be together. All he needs is a chance to show him.
But Rowan isn’t ready to dive in headfirst and risk his heart because everyone keeps using the word fated. All he knows for sure is that he is to drawn to Mikhail and is willing to give them a shot.
When one night together ends up with an accident neither saw coming, will the threat of pregnancy tear them apart?
Sometimes when you least expect it, you get the biggest rewards. But can Rowan let his walls down enough to actually accept Mikhail so he can show him that his heart will always be safe?
Or will this Whitfell lose both his mate and his chance at a family?

Review

This was a bit better than book 2, but not as good as book 1. Rowan and Mikhail have a bit more of a relationship fleshed out and we get a bit more feel for Rowan’s back story.

All in all, this just felt more complete than book 2.

3.5 stars for book 3
I am looking forward to book 4!

Retro Review: Shattered Secrets (In the Shadow of the Wolf #1) by R.J. Scott , Diane Adams

Blurb

Rob is a cop and has just passed his thirtieth birthday, being promoted to a special police task force specializing in wolf / human cases. He sees it all. The seedy underbelly of city life, the fights, the murders, and the parts of human / wolf interaction that people would rather ignore. He meets a young man, Jamie, at a club and embarks on the hottest one night stand of his life. Little does he know that his lover is a shifter. He has no worries with wolves, but interspecies relationships are not on his to-do list.

When a case involving kidnappings of young werewolves lands on Rob’s desk the ugly face of the werewolf sex trade is something he has to deal with. With Jamie seemingly at the centre of it all can Rob push past his prejudices and keep his lover alive?

Review

I’m not sure why I hadn’t read this before but I love RJ Scott and have enjoyed Diane Adams work in the past and I ran across a mention of this somewhere… you get the picture.

In any case I really enjoyed this!  There are a few plot holes – like the “I don’t want to date a shifter because we wouldn’t be equals” that are small and don’t really interfere with my overall enjoyment.

There is a fair amount of hot smexy times and “mine” / mate feelz.  There is an exciting crime to solve and some shifted times as well.

Overall I read through this quickly and can’t wait to move on to book 2!

Highly recommended to shifter fans!

Recent Relase: Moonlight Kiss (Vampires of Silver Creek #1) by Kensie King

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43514703-moonlight-kiss?from_search=true

Blurb

We only have one rule: don’t tell humans who we really are. Vampires. But what if the one you’re destined to be with is human?

Jonathan Monroe has been part of his clan of vampires since they settled in Silver Creek. He honors his leaders’ wishes about keeping their secret from humans, though he doesn’t see humans as a threat. They intrigue him. Flesh and blood with real lives, real worries—real heartbeats. But he keeps his distance even though he feels like he’s missing something. When he sees a car slide off the road one night and rescues the man inside, he’s sure he’s found the person he’s meant to be with—even though it goes against everything their kind stands for.

David Reynolds has always taken care of himself. A job, a home, a new start. But coming to Silver Creek left him with a hole he can’t seem to fill. Until he meets Jonathan Monroe. Since Jonathan saved him from near death, he feels a special connection to him he’s never felt with another person in his life. Nothing can deter it—not even Jonathan’s secret. But when he finds out the truth about his savior, his entire existence is put in jeopardy.

Jonathan is willing to do whatever it takes to keep David safe, but it might mean risking everything to stay with the man he’s fallen for.

This steamy M/M romance is set in a contemporary world with vampires. Each book in the series is a standalone story, with a sexy romance and a HEA.

Review

This was good, not great.  I enjoyed the human finding out about vampires thing.  I didn’t enjoy the “keep it a secret or make him a vampire” thing.

The smexy times were good, the drama predictable but not distracting from the romance.  I thought it was funny that the one rule was immediately broken!

My biggest complaint was that it was not full of typical vampire “fun powers” and biting etcetera and it made it seem like being a vamp is super boring and not fun.  I’ll investigate the second book in the series but I’m not very hopeful.

Release Day Review: Familiar Demon By Amy Lane

Familiar Love: Book Two
For over a century, Edward Youngblood has been the logical one in a family of temperamental magical beings. But reason has not made him immune to passion, and Edward’s passion for Mullins, the family’s demon instructor, has only grown.
Mullins was lured into hell through desperation—and a fatal mistake. He’s done his best to hang onto his soul in the twisted realm of the underworld, and serving the Youngblood family when summoned has been his only joy. Edward concocts a plan to spring Mullins by collecting a series of items to perform an ancient ritual—an idea that terrifies Mullins. He can’t bear the thought of losing Edward and his brothers to a dangerous quest.
But every item in their collection is an adventure in brotherhood and magic, and as Mullins watches from the sidelines, he becomes more and more hopeful that they will succeed. When the time comes for Mullins to join the mission, can he find enough faith and hope to redeem himself and allow himself happiness in the arms of a man who would literally go to hell and back—and beyond—to have Mullins by his side?

Review by Mary

When I started Familiar Demon I wondered if I should have read (or listened) to Familiar Angel first but its not necessary. It became clear as I continued that everything was to be explained. Although I think I will listen to it because I liked the characters.

This is the story of Mullins a demon and Edward a familiar. Their friendship and love has spanned more than a century. There are a lot of twists and turns involving gods and elves and all manner of other mystical creatures. Which gives the story a good pace. During the search for ingredients needed in the spell to free him Mullins tells his story. Explaining to Edward how he ended up in Hell and it only endears him further.

With the help of his family Edward manages to gather almost everything he needs to release Mullins from Hell. Into this story comes characters from some earlier books set on Greens Hill, the Little Goddess Series, and they form a key part of the story. I am tempted to look into them.

There are some aspects that didn’t seem clear but maybe they are destined to be explained in the next book. I wouldn’t say this is one of my favourite books by Amy Lane but is different and if you like fantasy it might be right up your street.

Review by Morgan

I bet I’m going to be in the minority again. Sigh.

This was just too complex for me. I had such a hard time understanding what was going on with all the Green’s Hill people and the “sphincters of hell” kept bringing me out of the story. I also did not understand the Other at all and the end result was this hodge podge of fantasy that just didn’t make me feel like I was as “in” the story as I wanted to be.

I adore those 3 boys. I loved the Angel story from book 1 and by comparison I was underwhelmed with the connection between Edward and Mullins.

There was just too much going on and I’m sad to say this just didn’t work for me as well as many of Amy’s other books did.

Now, that being said, it was still an Amy story – so parts of it were still really good – but parts of it felt discombobulated and rushed – but that could just be me. I have read the Green’s Hill stuff – once – awhile ago – and maybe if it was fresher in my mind – but I didn’t care for it – one of the MCs dies! – and it wasn’t one of Amy’s best – IMHO.

So – for fans of Amy, for fans of her Green Hill, and for fans of Familiar Angel this will definitely be a must read – but if you aren’t in one of those categories you might be terribly confused.

Blurb
After two years together, Alex has been dreading the inevitable moment when Damon learns the truth: that Alex is a shifter, part of a small percentage of the population able to switch genders at will. Thanks to a forced implant, though, Alex is suddenly static—unable to shift—and male. Overnight, he’s out to a world that neither understands nor tolerates shifters . . . and to his heterosexual boyfriend.
Damon is stunned to discover his girlfriend is a shifter, and scared to death of the dangers the implant poses to Alex’s health. He refuses to abandon Alex, but what about their relationship? Damon is straight, and with the implant both costly and dangerous to remove, Alex is stuck as a man.
Stripped of half his identity and facing serious physical and social ramifications, Alex needs Damon more than ever, but he doesn’t see how they can get through this.
Especially if he’s static forever.

Review

Book reviewed previously

WOW!

This ranks as one of my all time favorite books in this genre.
I can’t say enough good things about this – but I’ll try!

First – it’s sort of a unique shifter book. Instead of shifting into animals, in this world that LA Witt has created, some people can change their sex at will. Not just the important pieces, but their entire bodies. So they become more masculine, larger, muscular, etcetera for male and smaller, more delicate, etcetera for female. But like fraternal twins, they still retain that look about them so you can see the resemblance.

In this case Alex (both female and male version) is dating Damon as a woman. Damon doesn’t know about the male Alex and this causes a lot of worry as to how to go about telling him. The point becomes moot when Alex’s parents decide to force her to stay permanently male, or “static” by injecting an evil chip into her spine. Of course they have no knowledge of Alex’s female love-life, only a desire to have a son and NOT to have someone who can shift genders.

There is the possibility of removing the chip but it has the potential for disaster, paralysis, death, dismemberment – ok not really – but also continuing the static state. Some people choose this treatment voluntarily but not Alex. S/he has always enjoyed the huge freedom allowed by being able to be one then the other gender. And since she thinks she may be in love with her straight boyfriend, being stuck as a man is particularly harsh.

But… the time comes when Alex must show Damon the truth of the situation. And here is where things really get to be interesting on both a plot level and a sociological level. (This is what makes this book spectacular IMHO – the bringing in so flawlessly the social construct of gender identity and the breakdown of what it means to be woman or man – especially when – in this case – it’s the same person wearing a different “skin”.)

Damon really does care for – maybe even love Alex – so he’s willing to at least try to work through this crisis and see it through. He doesn’t know what he wants. For Alex to go through with the reversal surgery? To try to be with a man when he’s only ever identified as straight? To give up and let Alex do this alone? But no, he’s an amazing person and sticks with it.

The story is so full of social questions. There’s prejudice. There’s the discussion of what if feels like to be in the “wrong body”. There’s the gay/straight/person centric version of sexual attraction. There’s – Gah! So much!

In the end the two lovers must make a decision. Should Alex attempt the surgery and is the risk worth it.

I won’t tell you the final decision but it is thought provoking – to say the least.

LA Witt won some awards for this – as she should have – and I can see why. It’s so amazing, her ability to hit you with these social question while still weaving a beautiful and touching and sometimes erotic love story. Superb!

If you have any interest in transgender and gender fluidity or gender ID this is right up your alley. It also fulfills something for those GFY fans. But it’s still, at it’s heart, a love story and a story of knowing one’s heart – so truly, any fan of romance will be entranced.

I can’t recommend it highly enough!
