Recent Release: Rules for Santa by Susan Hawke

Good Reads

Blurb:
Rule #18: Daddy’s boy will always believe in his Santa Daddy.

Homeless, alone, and now jobless, Cameron Evans is lost… until he’s found after a prominent local attorney literally trips over him when the boy is passed out from dehydration.

Scott Hendrickson has two things in life: his job as an assistant district attorney, and his son Davey. Other than that, he lives alone in a house that’s too big, too empty, too… lonely.

It’s not just Cameron’s life that might change for the better when Scott takes him in. Scott can provide material things and security, but Cameron returns the favor by breathing fresh air into Scott’s stale life.

Two men who need each other… one magical holiday season. Could a little Christmas magic be all that’s needed to bring the biggest gift of all? Maybe Cameron doesn’t need a Sugar Daddy… because he already has a Santa Daddy.

This is the third book in a series about not-so-perfect Daddies, adorable “boys,” and one sassy brat with an insane list of rules. Get ready for all the squishy holiday feels you’d want from a Susan Hawke book.
Review:
When Scott finds Cameron in need of help, he doesn’t hesitate to jump in and soon the two find an attraction beginning to take shape. Both men are surprised at the depth of their feelings and must work through many obstacles before finding a happy ever after. Will the two give in to their desires and follow their hearts?
I enjoyed this installment of the Davey’s Rules series. In this book we get to see Davey’s father find a boy of his own. Scott is a good man and father; I enjoyed the relationship that he has with Davey. Their interactions add nicely to this story and Davey’s easy acceptance of Cameron is sweet. Cameron is a young man in a dire situation and even as he accepts the help Scott offers, he wants to carry his share showing what a good man he is. The two are cute together and the love that they have for one another shows in all that they do. I enjoyed seeing their relationship take shape. Scott and Cameron’s story is a wonderful story about finding love when you last expect it. As we watch their relationship take place we also get to see more from Davey and some of the others at the club and I cannot wait to see Davey finally find love. The author does a wonderful job of bringing this world and its endearing characters to life. I was quickly immersed in Scott and Cameron’s story and am excited to see what will come next in this world.

“I’ve never thought of calling a man Daddy before, but I can’t think of a word that fits Vale better. He’s my Daddy, and I’m his pup.”

Broken and bruised, there’s nothing I won’t do to protect Adrian. I picked him up and made him whole before, and I’ll do it again. Adrian is a sweet pup with a smile full of sunshine and a heart made for love. A sweet pup needs a gentle hand, and that’s exactly what I intend to give him.

There’s nothing quite like slipping an expensive pair of high heels onto Adrian’s feet and watching him light up. If he wants a fairytale, I’ll happily be his Prince Charming.

*** Heel is the second book in the Working Out the Kinks series but can be read as a stand-alone. This book contains a scene of domestic violence. This book also contains an adorable man who loves to be a puppy, fabulous high heels, and the happily ever after Adrian deserves.

Review:
Adrian has had enough abuse and in fear of his life he runs from an abusive alpha. While he recuperates from his latest injuries he stays with his good friends and soon finds himself enjoying some time with the one alpha he has always wanted. Vale once again finds himself once again helping Adrian get on his feet. This time he has no excuse to push the man away. As the two spend more time together their feelings grow deeper. Can Vale and Adrian find a way to their happy ever after or will they let it slip through their fingers again?
This story is a sweet romance that gives readers the power of true love. Adrian and Val were meant to be together the attraction between them has been there since they first met. The two are perfect together, Val is just the kind of man Adrian needs in his life. I enjoyed watching the dymanics of their relationship play out and see it become so strong and beautiful. It was nice to see Adrian find his way again after dealing with so much in his life. Trust is a big factor in this story, and it was nice seeing Val work hard to show Adrian that he is a man that he can trust with not only his body but his heart as well. The hard work and friendship that the two men share makes for a wonderful and heartwarming read.

Audiobook: Sweet Clematis by R. Cooper narrated by Dominic Carlos

Blurb

A Being(s) in Love Story

Can a curse be a blessing?

Clematis works hard to embody every fairy stereotype. He can be a sulky prince or a submissive flirt, slutty and arrogant or silly and soft. He makes himself into whatever causes someone to want him. Combine that with beauty that’s incredible even for a fairy, and everyone wants him sooner or later… just not for long.

Well, everyone except the fairy Clematis secretly adores. But then, he’s never expected happily ever after, not when he’s spent years burying his emotions and making himself unlovable to push people away and protect his heart.

But his curse changes all that, and Clematis can no longer prevent his feelings from rising to the surface. He’s terrified that when his few friends see him for who he really is, they’ll abandon him, just like his parents did.

It’s hard to imagine friends who see past his act to the sweet person within, but maybe happiness has been in front of him the entire time, waiting for the real Clematis to break free and blossom.

REVIEW

Does a fairy find love with another fairy? Clematis has always thought that the shiny humans were the ones that you find happiness with. When he meets Flor, he sees so much shine, but Flor is only interested in David. Clematis hides so much for so long and when he and Flor begin a tentative friendship years after they meet Clematis cannot hide his emotions anymore. He believes that he is not worthy of any kind of friendship or love and pushes Flor away before he can be hurt but the feelings have already begun and cannot be denied.

I enjoyed this story from the Beings in Love series. It was nice to see Flor and Clematis get their own story. We get to see the softer sides of Flor and Clematis. We see what makes Clematis do what he does. As their relationship grows and deepens, we get to see what is underneath the façade that they each show the world. Their story is full of emotions and strong characters. Flor and Clematis figure things out with the help of their friends. I enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie between everyone. Clematis and Flor’s story is a beautiful read. We are treated to emotions and revelations throughout this book. Not only do we get to see their relationship unfold but we also get to see more of the political strife that is going on for the beings of this world and especially at the school. I hope that there is more to come from this world.
Narrator Dominic Carlos does a wonderful job of bringing these characters and their world to life. I was quickly absorbed into the story as soon as I began to listen.

Recent Release: How not to break by Susan Hawke

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44181697-how-not-to-break?from_search=true

Blurb

Take one former SEAL with a healthy dose of regret…

Nick St. Cloud is living with shame from the one time he let his lust override his sense of honor. He’s haunted by the memory of when he made love to his best friend’s eighteen-year-old son. The tragic accident that happened that same night has only compounded his guilt. A decade later, he’s doing his best to be there for Charlie’s son, but anything more than that just wouldn’t be right… would it?

Plus the younger guy who he’s tried to forget…

It’s been ten years. Ten long years. Does Shaw Michaelson feel bad about having seduced his dad’s best friend? Umm, maybe? Although he could’ve done things differently, Shaw can’t find it within himself to be sorry for the hottest night of his life with the one man he’s never been able to forget. The man he’s patterned every subsequent relationship after… yeah, Shaw totally has a type.

Equals a pair of men who deserve a second chance at a first time.

The two men are living in an uneasy peace within the same small town and circle of friends, being careful not to let the other get close enough to open old wounds. All their walls fall when a stalker begins terrorizing Shaw, sending him running to the one man he knows will keep him safe.

Review:
Nick and Shaw are two men with a past and that past has turned both of their lives upside down. Each man has dealt with the aftershocks of one single night in a different way. Nick tries to keep his distance but still wants to protect Shaw from any danger, yet Shaw cannot seem to get over the pain of Nick only seeing him as a child and ignoring the sparks that they have together. When a new and more dangerous threat targets Shaw the two must put aside their differences and work together to keep Shaw safe. Soon the sparks that never went out between them build into an inferno and they must look the fire in the eye and make some choices before it is too late.
Nick and Shaw’s book is a beautiful read full of emotions. I loved seeing both men find a way to get through the struggles that they have and fight for their love. As the two spend more time together they find that they must realize that the past is just that the past. Nothing can change the past, but they must begin to heal by letting go of the hurt and finding the strength to look towards the future. Shaw and Nick are both strong men and learn to help each other heal. With the help of wonderful friends, they work to figure out who is the danger to Shaw is and how to deal with them. I enjoyed seeing everyone pull together to keep Shaw safe. The love and devotion that Shaw and Nick have shows through in all that they do and makes this not only a hot read but also a wonderful romance.

Blurb

Meet two men who need each other’s help but don’t realize it until it’s almost too late.

Noah is gay and terrified someone might find out. So much so that when he was blackmailed with pictures of himself with another man, instead of coming clean, he left his SEAL team without a word.

The other man is openly gay Mason, a former Marine and now part of the FBI’s Joint Terrorist Task force. It takes eight years after their first meeting in the desert for a chance event bring the two men together again. Now Noah must decide if he’s ready to accept who he is or if it’s easier to cut and run. Can they navigate the obstacles in their path to build a relationship? And why does the thought of that scare them more than investigating a group of terrorists?

Review

This book involves Mason, FBI and Noah, a former SEAL. There is an instant attraction. The way Noah struggles with his sexuality is something that some readers can relate to. It was a shame he was blackmailed. His “hot and cold” with Mason was frustrating, but understandable. Mason lives with guilt for not being able to catch the people responsible for terrorist attacks that affects him personally. The two meet in a bar, had seen each other briefly years ago, and grew close. The book has humor, mystery, action, and some steamy mm scenes. Both go through a lot in the book. It’s not a cutesy and sweet romance, there’s many aspects to the book. Some surprises packed in the book also. Highly enjoyed reading.

Recent Release: Dirty Laundry (#3 Tucker Springs series – 2nd edition) by Heidi Cullinan

Dreamspinner

https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/dirty-laundry-by-heidi-cullinan-10335-b

Blurb

Sometimes you have to get dirty to come clean.
When muscle-bound Denver Rogers effortlessly dispatches the frat boys harassing grad student Adam Ellery at the Tucker Springs laundromat, Adam’s thank-you turns into impromptu sex over the laundry table. The problem comes when they exchange numbers. What if Adam wants to meet again and discovers Denver is a high-school dropout with a learning disability who works as a bouncer at a local gay bar? Or what if Denver calls Adam only to learn while he might be brilliant in the lab, outside of it he has crippling social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder?
Either way, neither of them can shake the memory of their laundromat encounter. Despite their fears of what the other might think, they can only remember how good the other one feels. The more they get together, the kinkier things become. They’re both a little bent, but in just the right ways.
Maybe the secret to staying together isn’t to keep things clean and proper. Maybe it’s best to keep their laundry just a little bit dirty.

Review

I always love an outwardly tough and physically imposing hero who then turns out to be a gentle giant, caring and kind. Even better if they have a vulnerable side and insecurities to bring into that mix. So needless to say, Denver swept me off my feet as easily as he did Adam.

Heidi Cullinan did an amazing job writing with so much insight and sensitivity about Adam’s mental health issues and his struggle to cope with his OCD and to find the right people to help him do so. The panic attacks, the anxiety and worries that constantly plague Adam were all described very convincingly and I constantly felt myself tense up right alongside Adam. One of the things that struck me most was the metaphor of the horses for his OCD. I was so happy for him when he managed to grasp control of the reins for a while.

Denver and Adam are the sweetest couple, even when they’re being surprisingly kinky. There’s always an element of care or gentleness in their interactions with each other, even when things get intense physically. Which they do, these two have amazing chemistry!

There are a some hurdles to overcome, of course, because true love doesn’t normally come easy, not in romance novels nor in real life. There’s quite some angst (yay!) in this story, because Adam and Denver both have hang-ups to overcome, but they help each other get there. With a little help from friends as well.

The secondary characters were well-written, the good ones and the other one (maybe he was just a tad too awful though). I loved Louisa especially, she’s such a good friend to Adam, loyal and wise. The scene where she takes Denver to task was incredible!

I very much enjoyed this story, it’s one of my favorite books by this author.

m/m – contemporary – opposites attract – hurt/comfort – mental health – angst – nerd/cowboy – bdsm

Recent Release: Sun Shift One: No Sanctuary by Bailey Bradford

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42097017-sun-shift-one

Blurb

One shifter, waiting for others to join him in the sanctuary he’s built. One lone wolf, broken and close to death. Cali and Jacob find more than sanctuary; they find hope and the possibility of a love that can endure throughout time– if they can survive the evil coming for them and those seeking safety with them. But there might not be any truly safe place for shifters…

Cali has had to be cautious around humans, who have no clue that shifters exist. He’s made a success of himself, and now he’s ready to escape from humanity. The sanctuary he’s had built will be home not only to him but to any other shifters looking for a safe place to live. He’s spared no expense. Now all he needs is for others to join him. Maybe he’ll even have his deepest wish come true– that he will find another lion shifter to share the kind of the abiding love his parents had.

When the perimeter alarms go off, Cali races to see if there’s a lion waiting for him. What he finds is a lone wolf, beaten, battered, and on the verge of death. Cali rescues the wolf and brings him to the refuge. Whatever ails the other shifter is an unknown to Cali, and it takes all of his skill– and a lot of luck– to keep the lone wolf alive.

Jacob is a haunted wolf and a tormented man. He’s seen things no one should ever have to see and survived something more tragic than most people or shifters could imagine. A mystery illness keeps bringing him to the brink of death, but somehow, he has found sanctuary with a lion shifter determined to help him live.

Jacob isn’t what Cali expected, but a bond forms between them, and through that bond, emotions that neither man can deny.

But nothing in life comes easy. Other shifters find sanctuary, Jacob’s illness continues to weaken him, and an enemy greater than any Cali had ever expected comes for those he’s trying to protect.

Even hiring the best security firm in the field might not help save Cali and the man he loves, or the Pride of mixed-species shifters he’s building.

Review
I am looking forward to this new series!
While this isn’t as specific a “fated mate” as some, it’s definitely there. There are some crazy bears who I’m hoping will find mates soon as well as some pretty damaged but still loveable wolves and other types of shifters.

There is a fair amount of excitement and some bad guys to beat as well as some hot smexy times to be had.

All in all a good start to a new series!
Recommended!

Blurb
Soulmates across time. Two hearts that were meant to be together.

In 1892, Layton Blue, outlaw, longs for hearth and home even as he treasures his life of freedom.

A freak rainstorm washes Zach’s car into a ditch, sending him back to the year 1892. Searching for help, alone and on foot in the middle of the nowhere, he crosses paths with the famous Ketchum Gang. Now the gang’s prisoner, Zach’s fate is to be sold at a seedy auction for whores.

Layton is put in charge of making sure Zach does not escape, but as the chemistry between them grows, Layton finds himself wanting to help Zach.

Can Layton overcome years of being on the run? Can Zach accept help from an outlaw?

A male/male time travel romance complete with fast rides across the desert, campfires beneath the stars, cool water in the desert, wild rescues, and true love across time

Review
It’s not often that I read late into the night because I had to finish a story, but this is one of them. I wasn’t sure going in whether I would connect to an outlaw as the main character but I needn’t have. Layton is a sweet caring man caught in a situation where he is making the best he can out of what life has given him. The main characters from the previous books are mentioned but they do not play a major role and their context is explained so well in the story I didn’t feel I was missing something not having read it. Although I will do now because I want to know more about them. The relationship between Layton and Zach feels like enemies to lovers but it’s not that’s only on Zach’s part given the circumstances he finds himself in. Back in time stranded and in the clutches of an immoral gang. His only hope is to find Laurie. In the last section of the story the pace picks and I was rooting for them. I just wish there was an epilogue a glimpse into the future but maybe that’ll be in the next book.

Recent Release: Escape to Paradise By Cailtin Ricci

Dreamspinner

https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/escape-to-paradise-by-caitlin-ricci-10136-b

Blurb

His attraction to men means Kalean is the black sheep of his wealthy and powerful family—but it won’t get him out of attending his brother’s pretentious wedding ceremony. Kalean doesn’t want to go, but if his parents insist, he has a stipulation: he’ll be there with a man on his arm.
On the pleasure planet, Wish, Kalean goes to a brothel to meet some potential escorts. But the man who captures his attention isn’t one of those on offer….
Descani is as surprised as anyone at Kalean’s attraction to him—and at his own interest in the young man. He’s even more perplexed as a bond begins forming between them.
But a murder rips apart Kalean’s family and redefines his role. He’ll be isolated on his cold and barren home world, far from the warm and colorful planet of Wish—and the arms of the man who’s coming to mean so much to him—unless he can find a way to escape the forces separating them.

Review

This book is the newest in this series. It has shy and inexperienced Kalean. His family owns the mining rights to the icy planet they live on. If there was royalty, they would be the monarch. His cold and distant family grated on my nerves. Hard to be out, but not accepted. Pretty well swept under the rug. Then as stipulation to go to his brother’s wedding, he meets Descani. A character that by description is almost feline like…but no mention of tail. They are very hot together. Kalean started shy, but as the book progresses he became comfortable in his new freedom. Descani’s character is amusingly brash and very forward. Great contrast to Kaleaan who is shy and just accepts thing as is while brooding in silence. A few sad parts, but not bad. I enjoyed the added character of Lethe, his sister in law. She has spunk. The descriptions of the locations are great and you feel transported to the planets in this story. Great book., it was hard to put down.

Blurb
Where Bo Marchand comes from, gay men are just confirmed bachelors who never found the right girl. But now Bo’s a successful winemaker on the central coast of California, supporting his whole damned Georgia family, and all he really wants is the beautiful, slightly mysterious Jeremy Aames.

Jeremy’s vineyard is under threat from Ernest Ottersen, the voracious winemaker who seems to know all Jeremy’s blending secrets and manages to grab all his customers. Bo tries to help Jeremy and even provides a phony alibi for Jeremy when Ottersen turns up dead in Jeremy’s tasting room. But it’s clear Jeremy isn’t who he claims, and Bo must decide if it’s worth tossing over his established life for a man who doesn’t seem to trust anyone. When Jeremy gets kidnapped, some of the conservative winemakers turn out to be kinky sex fiends, and the list of murderers keeps dwindling down to Jeremy. Bo has to choose between hopping on his white horse or climbing back in his peach-pie-lined closet.

Review
The first book in the series was very nice and I was looking forward to reading this one, but I have to say I had a hard time reading it. A big part of the book, around 25-60% dragged out too much for me, I kept losing interest and deviating to other books because I was just bored. I think the most annoying thing was that I could tell what was behind the mystery, and the clues were very obvious. The characters, including Llewellyn and Blaise from book #1 were frustratingly clueless and it was too hard for me not want the plot to just get on with it. The last 35% or so are much more interesting, but most of the book could not hold me in suspense.

The couple is funny, their romance, while a bit cliché, was amusing and I liked how well wine making was incorporated into the book. Yet I can only give it 2.5 stars because it was so hard to finish and could not keep my interest for long.
