How far would you dare to go to win it all?

Maverick Holms and Duke Warren share almost everything a college soccer team, an apartment and the same extremely competitive nature. Thanks to that never-back-down spirit, they re about to share more than they bargained for.

The game is gay chicken . The rule: get as close as possible without kissing, and the one that pulls away first is the loser. The problem: neither of them likes to lose. It isn t long before the game becomes an excuse to touch and kiss in every possible forbidden way. And after they pose for a gay website to earn extra money, things really heat up.

Suddenly Duke is talking lifetime commitment, and Mav is backpedaling as hard as he can, not sure if he s ready to accept all his best friend is offering him. Or the truth about what he is.”

Review

Ok, ok. So this was one of my favorites… awhile ago. It’s not quite as “timeless” as I’d thought but… it’s still a lot of fun with a surprising amount of feelz. (And tons of hawt sex!) LOL

So these guys play “gay chicken” – which is pretty offensive when I think about it – but – for the sake of the story – is an effective tool to get these two guys – who are apparently realllllly clueless – in compromising situations that push the limit on believability – but are also pretty erotic.

If you close your eyes to the vaguely offensive and slightly ridiculous plot, and focus on the feels and the eventual results, it’s a quick, hot read about 2 frat boys finding love.

Blurb:
Federal Judge Tom Brewer is finally putting the pieces of his life back together. In the closet for 25 long years, he’s climbing out slowly, and, with the hope of finding a special relationship with the stunning Mike Lucciano, US Marshal assigned to his DC courthouse. He wants to be out and proud, but he can’t erase his own past, and the lessons he learned long ago.

A devastating terrorist attack in the heart of Washington, DC, and the capture and arrest of the terrorist lead to a trial that threatens to expose the dark underbelly of America’s national security. The Russian president is gravely injured and fixated on revenge, while a gay Russian dissident is arrested and put on trial in Judge Tom Brewer’s courtroom. As Russia beats the drums of war and the United States struggles to contain the trial before it races out of control, secrets and lies, past and present, collide in his courtroom, before his bench.

With the world’s attention fixed on Tom and this case, secrets from his past explode during the course of the trial, which place him at the very center of the case and make him the only man who can try to stop the world’s slide into war.

Review: I am a big fan of Joel Leslie (no secret there) and while I thoroughly enjoyed his performance and the story, I didn’t think that the 2 were a good fit … (as I type this I fully expect to be black-balled from several FB groups ☹ ).
Let me explain. Hush is part romance, part thriller – the first half, the romance is where I think Joel Leslie excels – he captures the tentative way Tom comes out of his 20+ year stint in the closet for Mike, the almost comical way Mike and Tom dance around their feelings and the comic relief of Kris, (Mike’s best friend). When the thriller/drama part of the story begins, it took me a bit to get used to hearing Joel Leslie outside of a humourous, romantic setting. However, once I got caught up in the ensuing events, especially trying to figure out who was pulling the strings, it got easier to accept his narration.
As mentioned before, Joel Leslie gives a very good performance and the story is very good. I just need to remember that artists grow into other roles and I need to grow along with them ☺

Blurb: Sometimes the only way to move forward… is to go back.

JAMES
I don’t know what’s more shocking—the sudden end to my marriage, or the fact that I’d married a woman at all. But now I’m broke and homeless, kicked out of my Upper West Side apartment while my ex-wife walks away with everything we’ve ever worked for.
So what’s an executive chef stripped of his dignity gonna do?
Go back to Jersey with his tail between his legs, that’s what.
BEN
I can’t say that spending a decade pining after my best friend was the best use of my time. While I’d pretty much become an expert at the whole unrequited love thing, I’d resigned myself to the fact that Jimmy and I were never gonna happen. But when Jimmy turned up on my doorstep in his hour of need, I jumped at the chance to offer him my bed—er, couch. I mean, what are friends for, right?
Now that he’s released from the shackles of matrimony, I can’t wait to show him exactly what he’s been missing out on all these years.
What I didn’t anticipate was him showing me that maybe I’d been missing out too.

Review: I liked this friends-to-lovers, slow burn story, despite the few issues I had with James (Jimmy).
Jimmy and Ben had been friends with benefits whilst in college, when out of the blue, Jimmy announces (to Ben) that he’s getting married (issue #1); to a woman (issue #2). The marriage, in name only (issue #3), is to further his culinary career (issue #4). When said marriage fails, Jimmy heads back to his bestie, Ben who offers him a place to stay. Of course their feelings for each other are rekindled (Ben’s feelings never really went away), and they find their way to being back together. However, Jimmy is still in the closet and plans to stay in it for the foreseeable future (#5). I was not a fan of Jimmy.
Eventually Jimmy is outed. He and Ben work through the issues resulting from the outing and Jimmy’s divorce settlement to get to their HEA.
A nice story set in the 90’s; good for a sweet, uncomplicated read.

Blurb:
Volumes one, two, and three of the Upending Tad series.

Loser Takes All

Tad’s weekend started out like any other; hitting a college frat party with a handful of buddies. But just as the evening hits its peak, things get up-ended fast. Ditched by his drunken, trolling friends, Tad winds up getting hustled by three jocks playing poker. Now, he’s forced to pay his dues in the most outlandish of ways by spending an hour with his victors’ favorite flogger, Scott. But the guy’s tantalizing torture quickly proves to be the least of Tad’s worries and the kickoff to a night of raw, shocking lust. Experience the graphic, minute-by-minute account of that hour spent at the hands of Tad’s insatiable tormentor. Addicting chemistry lights the stage as Scott ignites Tad’s reluctant desires into a frenzy of forbidden need.

Test of Endurance

The last time Tad saw Scott, the ripped physical trainer left him with quite a lot to think about. At his wit’s end, he seeks Scott out, voluntarily, on his own terms. Will the completely different setting offer what he’s seeking; proof that their exchange’s unexpected turn was just a random mishap? Or will being in Scott’s presence suggest something different….

Sideline Submission

Round two with Scott hadn’t been what Tad expected, but it did end up providing a few important realizations. That crazy first encounter was definitely more than mere male hormones. Which meant he felt a true attraction to the guy. Something that explained his defenselessness against Scott’s smoldering charms. So Tad had resolved to cope with his findings the only logical way he knew how: purge the guy from his system by staying away for good. Unfortunately, that proved way more uncomfortable than he’d anticipated. So when Scott unexpectedly seeks him out, Tad’s too drained to fight his turmoil any longer. He agrees to hang out, not knowing Dom boy Max will end up part of the deal.

Story review:
College student, Tad loses a bet and has a choice of a broken limb or a flogging at the hands of a Dom – (some friends these guys are!). Anyway, Tad chooses the Dom and his world is ‘upended’ from that experience. Scott is a caring, engaging man; a personal trainer who also happens to be a Dom.
Tad has always thought he was straight, but his experiences with Scott changes all that. Books 1 through 3 follow Tad on his sexual awakening with BDSM and gay love with Scott as his very capable trainer. I know this aspect of the book would of fit nicely in a BDSM porn video on websites similar to https://www.porn7.xxx/. The story is not BDSM heavy which I liked, (not a fan of BDSM in general, but a good story helps me deal). There is a lot of heart and hope for the 2 men to get their HEA (Tad struggled with being thought of as gay in the beginning).

Narration:
What a ride! Michael Pauley did a great job of portraying Scott and Tad.
I really enjoyed listening to Michael Pauley’s portrayal of Tad and Scott – they were just as I imagined when I read the books. He did a great job of conveying the MC’s emotions – Tad’s apprehension and Scott’s sexy confidence.
It’s such a well crafted story that, I will likely continue the series, despite the fact that I generally avoid BDSM-based stories.
Definitely a very good listen.

Blurb:
Ever since the accident that cost him his job on the Seattle police force, Kevin Quinn has been living with psychic abilities he refers to as the ‘gift that keeps on taking’. His attempts to use his talents to help the police have been met with limited success. Yet, when teenage boys start going missing from the beach cities of Southern California, Kevin gets on a plane.
Connor Dougal has every reason to believe all psychics are fakes and charlatans. He’s still numb from the disappearance of his first love, a boy who went missing 10 years earlier. Everything he aspires to is a direct result of that tragedy, even the acquisition of his detective shield. The irony of having to babysit Kevin Quinn is not lost on him.
These two suspicious men must develop trust and respect for one another to solve the case and, on the way, maybe fall in love.

Review:

A good story with great narration.
Kevin is a reluctant psychic (the ‘gift’ manifests after an accident). He’s asked to work on a missing persons case where he meets Connor. Connor is assigned to assist Kevin in the investigation; at first they don’t get along, but very quickly they develop a rapport which leads to a mutual attraction. As they grow closer, the mystery of the disappearances unfolds. There is quite a bit of wit and humour in the story that kept me engaged throughout.

Story: 4 of 5 stars

Narration:JF Harding was really good! This was my first time listening to him after which I bought a couple more books that he’s narrated. His pacing, inflections and timing was spot on for the characters. The subtle humour and wit of the prose was nicely voiced and he portrayed the dynamics and chemistry of the 2 MC’s very well.
Definitely a story I will listen to again.
