Audiobook: Volley Balls (Balls to the Wall Book 1) by Tara Lain Narrated by Nick J Russo

Dreamspinner Presents

2nd Edition

A Balls to the Wall Romance

A double dose of alpha male might be better than one.

Despite just getting out of an abusive relationship with an asshole alpha, David Underwood’s wandering glance lands on two hot members of the Australian volleyball team on Laguna Beach and gets him harassed again. Still, when the delicious Gareth Marshall proves his interest by coming out to his team, David succumbs to his attraction. But Gareth’s volleyball partner, Edge, who’s equally hot, makes the lovers’ lives miserable.

For Gareth, a lifetime of hiding his orientation—and his attraction—from his best friend, Edge, as well as everyone else around him, adds up to hurt and frustration. David’s the first man to ever compete with Edge for Gareth’s passion. But Edge has secrets of his own, and David’s ex-lover will never be happy without David under his fist. With everything stacked against him, can a gay Laguna man find happiness with an alpha male–or two?

A “pumped up” version of the Volley Balls story, twice as long as the original.

First Edition published by Etopia Press, 2011.

(Book reviewed here previously)

I read the original edition and though this says it’s twice as long as the original, I can’t say that I noticed a heck of a lot of difference.

I love this series and though this wasn’t my favorite of the bunch, it’s still a lot of fun!
(I’m not sure if she’s redoing the entire series, but I see that there’s at least a new cover for book two so…) In any case, FAST Balls is my favorite of the series, reviewed here and I think that, though it’s not necessary, reading them in order helps to introduce the characters in a really nice way.

David is the owner of an art gallery who’s recently left an ex who abused him. He’s not really looking to date, but open minded when opportunity comes along. Edge and Gareth are Australian Volleyball players who are in town during a tournament. Gareth knows he’s gay but he’s deeply in the closet, Edge has some secrets of his own and some self-examination in his future.

To me, you have to just accept a lot on faith with this story. Don’t try to look at it too deeply- there are a lot of plot holes and amazing insta-love moments that aren’t terribly realistic. We don’t get a lot of relationship building here, as Gareth sees David once and is pretty smitten and makes some important life decisions with only a little bit of encouragement from David to go on.

The relationship between Edge and Gareth actually makes the most sense – given their history – and I guess the triad kinda makes sense – given that David is the only one with any real relationship experience at all. (This was the hardest for me to swallow. I could buy David and Gareth, Gareth and Edge and even David and Edge, but the three of them, coming together, and agreeing that this would work for them? I had a hard time seeing this given the brevity of their time together and the situation with Edge and… Well, it was a hard sell. The other thing that bothered me was the dialog – sometimes David and Gareth spoke in ways that didn’t always feel authentic. “Shall I …” etc. I just reminded myself this is fiction and kept reading. )

The sexy times are plentiful. Gareth’s mom is awesome. The art sounds fun. Seeing Edge switch gears and share with Gareth and David – super, scorching, hot and at times sweet, too. I didn’t really buy the triad, but found the guys fun to read about anyway, and I really enjoyed the other books in the series so…

Nick is one of my favorites. Is his Australian accent good? Not the best. Is it good enough. You bet! I still loved this even though it wasn’t my favorite by this narrator. He’s still easy to listen to and fun. He’s great with the comedic timing and the smexy times and that makes this worth the money!

Liam (Atherton Pack Book 1) Audiobook by Toni Griffin Narrated by Nick Flint

After a long night at work, all pastry chef Declan Morgan wants to do is have a run before he heads home to bed. His peaceful lope through the forest turns into a nightmare when he witnesses his Alpha kill a pack member in cold blood. Now Declan is on the run from the very people who should be protecting him.
Liam Anderson has never minded all the travel that comes with his position as a Beta to the Pennaeth Alpha. He’s used the time to search far and wide for his mate. He never expected to find the man naked and scared on his back porch.
Liam’s overjoyed at finally finding the one man fated for him. Now if only he can get Declan to open up and trust him with the secrets he carries.
Please note: This is a reedited second edition.

Liam is a Beta for the Pennaeth Alpha (most important in Australia). He’s excited to find his own mate, but fears it’ll never happen. He’s shocked when he finds him – naked- on his porch one night, clearly fleeing for his life.

Declan is in charge of his little brother now that his parents have died. He’s in a pack he doesn’t really care for and he’s lonely. When he witnesses his unscrupulous Alpha kill a pack member in cold blood over drugs, he runs for his life. He runs until he can’t and happens to stop when he smells the scent of his mate.

The two get together with very few problems, but they still have Declan’s old Alpha and Declan’s brother to deal with.

This sets us up for the companion to the Holland brother stories and introduces us to some of the characters we’ll see later in the series. It’s sweet and sexy. Not too deep but a fun read/listen.

Nick Flint does a great job with the narration. He’s easy to listen to and to my ears his accent is perfect.

If you life shifter stories you’ll love this.

Jake Rushman is on the run, but it’s too late. He’s being tracked by an expert.

Motorcycle Club Enforcer Nick is tough, but even he has a conscience. It’s slowly destroying him, together with memories of his parents’ ugly deaths. Nick eliminates the guilty, but Jake Rushman is the innocent witness to a murder. It will be one kill too many.

Determined to find redemption, Nick plans to trade his life for Jake’s. Neither man counts on the fierce, powerful bond that the collision of their opposing worlds brings, and Jake refuses to let Nick sacrifice himself. He offers Nick the one thing he’s never had: hope.

But with a violent past tracking them, Nick might be forced to do the one thing he promised himself he never would—kill again.

Jake is a nice guy, accountant, in the wrong place at the wrong time. He inadvertently witnesses a murder of a drug dealer by a motorcycle gang and he knows his life is on borrowed time unless he can escape.

Nik is the nephew of the leader of the Motorcycle gang and he’s set to take Jake out of the picture, but Nik’s tired of this life of killing and wants to do one final “good” act before taking his own life (what he perceives is the only way to successfully leave the gang.)

Nik decides to give Jake the tools to make his escape successful but Jake turns the tables on Nik and offers him a deal he can’t refuse.

This is a short story so I don’t want to give too much away – but – WOW it really packs a punch. I was captivated by word one and loved every single minute of the ride.

I am not familiar with this author, but I am very impressed. The writing is dark and powerful, the story flows well given it’s length and the story is both fairy-tale and realistic at the same time.

Jake and Nik are a wonderful couple and their chemistry is HOT but the most tangible thing between them is their love.

I highly recommend this book and will eagerly look for more from this author.

(And that cover is to DIE for!  ROWR!)
