Book 2 – Home in his Arms

Blurb

Ollie has always known he’s adopted, but he had no idea he was a freak.
Imagine the shock he got when he found out he’s not quite human… The only thing he can think to do is run before the only family he’s ever known discovers his secret, and toss him aside like the woman that birthed him.
As if finding out you’re a four-legged creature that howls isn’t bad enough, someone’s snatched him and is holding him captive.
Ollie is terrified and losing hope, and has no idea if he’s ever going to see his family again. Until he hears a voice in his head that promises him he’s safe.
Ronin is a man on a mission. As a former soldier, he’s used to saving people and dangerous situations. He’s off to track down the person that hurt his twins mate, and the last thing he’s looking for is someone for himself. However, fate has a funny way of intervening.
Ollie is everything he never knew he was looking for. Ronin is the intense alpha Ollie finds himself drawn to. Both discover they need each other before they even meet.
Can Ronin keep his mate safe, or will he lose Ollie before they even have a chance to enjoy forever?

Review
I did not enjoy this series as much as the Whitfell series or Betrayed. I think this is two books that maybe should be one and there isn’t enough story for two complete books.

This is a typical alpha/omega, mpreg, shifter, hurt/comfort story and book 1 is a bit more coherent than book 2.

Book 2 is an extension of book 1 and should be read in order doesn’t make as much sense. Devon (from book 1) has some reasonable motivations for his actions while Ollie does not. The family reunion simply didn’t explain things away and I was definitely frustrated by this book.

Book 1 – 3.5 stars

Book 2 2.5 stars

Dominik is a man without a home.
After everything he holds dear is stolen from him by the one person he thought would never betray him, Dominik leaves the only home he’s ever known and the pack that he was raised to lead.
The choice is easy… or maybe there isn’t one.
After wandering, Dom finally finds a place that makes him want to put down roots. Along with his best friend, the only one to stand by him, they create a pack like no other. One where everyone is welcome.
He has a home, now all Dom wants is a quiet life… that is, until he meets Elias.
Dom never thought he would find another home, but maybe fate has a plan and he’s right where he’s supposed to be.
This series has little to no angst, and lots and lots of fluff! Absolutely no cheating. If you want angst this is not the series for you. These are 25k short and sweet reads.

Review

This was the first book I read by this author (authors) and it led me to read more! I was absolutely in the mood for something super light and fluffy and this totally delivered!!!

The story line is pretty predictable – shifter, alpha/omega, mpreg, fated mates… you get the idea. But the characters are really great and the story flows really nicely. I think the writing duo has a bit of an edge over the authors on their own.

Retro Review: Whitfell Brothers Series by Skye Richmond

Malek
(Whitfell Brothers #1)

Blurb
Running from his problems might just lead Axel to his future.
Axel has done the stupidest thing ever. He kissed his straight best friend at the guy’s stag do and now he’s run away to the Lake District to lick his wounds.
All he wants, in fact, all he’s ever wanted is a Prince of his own.
Who knew running would lead Axel straight to his very own fairytale? No really. His new mate, yeah, that’s a thing, lives in a magical valley and there’s a castle and he’s telling Axel it’s going to be the two of them forever.
Did Axel mention in this fairytale he can have babies and his mate turns into a wolf? Only it’s not a fairytale, it’s really happening.
Malek has travelled the world searching for his mate, and now he’s actually here, in Malek’s family’s forest. It’s turning out to be the best day of his life.
No angst, and lots of fluff.

An MM Shifter Mpreg Romance.

Review

Again I am surprised by an author/series I’d not met before and psyched because I enjoyed it so much!

The author promises little to no fluff and they deliver! The focus of both books (in fact all that I’ve read by this author) is an omega finding and binding with their super sweet Alpha then getting pregnant and freaking out about it.

These are lovely light stories that are (mostly) well written and fun for fans of mpreg.

Don’t expect anything deep and the story line is predictable. But very enjoyable characters make it worthwhile.

4 of 5 stars for book 1

Malachi (Book 2)

Blurb

When he decided to surprise his boyfriend for a weekend, Alfie got the shock of his life. Apparently, the clock struck twelve and his prince—or in this case an earl—became a frog.
But as the saying goes, you have to kiss a couple of frogs…
Only now, Alfie’s trust had been shattered and he just wanted to lick his wounds. He called one of his older brothers, Axel, for help, not realising that doing so would change his life in ways he never imagined.
Malachi Whitfell had watched his older brother find his mate and settle down. And as much as he wished it wasn’t the case, he’s completely jealous.
When he got the call to help his brother’s mate, he didn’t expect to meet his… Axel’s baby brother. Now all he had to do was get Alfie to see that not all guys are like his ex and he’d found the one person who will never hurt him.

Life is as close to perfect as it could until Alfie’s frog showed up again… but Alfie’s already found his knight in shining armour—or wolf skin…
VERY LITTLE ANGST, AND LOTS OF FLUFF.

Review
I didn’t like this nearly as much as book 1. While I enjoyed the hurt/comfort of Alfie’s story, I wanted to know more about him and his relationship and less about the freaking out over becoming pregnant.

He and Malachi don’t get to know each other very well and that was less enjoyable.

3 of 5 stars for book 2

Mikhail (book 3)

Blurb

Mikhail knew he found his mate the first moment he set eyes on Rowan. There was only one problem—Rowan doesn’t believe in fated mates.
Will Mikhail be able to change his mind? Or will Rowan run as far away as he can before he gets a chance?
Rowan doesn’t realise Mikhail will do whatever it takes to prove to him that they’re destined to be together. All he needs is a chance to show him.
But Rowan isn’t ready to dive in headfirst and risk his heart because everyone keeps using the word fated. All he knows for sure is that he is to drawn to Mikhail and is willing to give them a shot.
When one night together ends up with an accident neither saw coming, will the threat of pregnancy tear them apart?
Sometimes when you least expect it, you get the biggest rewards. But can Rowan let his walls down enough to actually accept Mikhail so he can show him that his heart will always be safe?
Or will this Whitfell lose both his mate and his chance at a family?

Review

This was a bit better than book 2, but not as good as book 1. Rowan and Mikhail have a bit more of a relationship fleshed out and we get a bit more feel for Rowan’s back story.

All in all, this just felt more complete than book 2.

3.5 stars for book 3
I am looking forward to book 4!

Blurb

In a world where the rules are gray and the Don’s word is a law unto itself, only one thing is sacred… family.

A Team A.L.P.H.A. and Alphabits spin-off series

River Erikson is a man on the run. After scenting his true mate, he’s done everything in his power to escape. Just because he was born an omega doesn’t mean he needs to answer fate’s call and drop to his knees for some alpha. Especially not a smug mafioso who thinks way too much of himself. Luckily, his job at STAHP—the vicious vigilante organization that works to police shifters when law enforcement can’t—keeps him busy enough that he can try to forget how his traitorous body reacts whenever a certain muscled Russian is around.

Vasily Novak is stunned when he scents his mate, but powerless to chase him when he flees. How can he? His focus is entirely centered on the precocious five-year-old he recently learned was his child. All he can do is trust the fates to bring his mate back when the time is right. Vasily is confident that River will be his eventually… he just needs to be patient.

When Vasily’s son is taken, River comes to help retrieve the boy who melted his heart the first time Petey called him “pretty kitty.” As the pair leave a bloody trail through the city on their search, will the fates give them a second chance at finding a forever in each other?

This is the first book in a new mpreg mafia series. Get ready for a world ruled by the Don’s iron fist, unique interrogation tactics, and a family that stands together… no matter what. You can expect to find naughty, knotty scenes of steamy passion, along with a lot of potty-mouth language and more violence than you’re used to from us. But at its heart, you’ll still find all the fluffy mpreg feels and crazy antics you’d look for from Susi Hawke and Crista Crown.

Review

This was fun! Predictable for the most part, but the characters drew me in enough that the storyline was engaging anyway. I am definitely going to look for the second book in the series!

Recent Release: Savage Bite (Shifter Kings #2) by Aja Foxx

Good Reads

Blurb

Greyson Bailey had followed Shifter King Montgomery Beck for years. He stood by his side through thick and thin, fought numerous battles with him, and was even there when the man eventually claimed his omega after twenty-five years of waiting for him. Greyson just wished he could find a bit of that happiness of his own.

When he’s sent to oversee the omegas at the monastery where Fagan grew up, he finds more trouble than a simple shifter, even a warrior like himself, can handle. He wakes up wounded in an alley with no idea how he got there, who had shot him, or why the omega kneeling next to him smells so damn alluring.

Davan has spent his entire life in a monastery being trained to serve whatever master he was given to. He learned every fighting skill he could, not to protect his master, but to protect himself. He had no intention of spending his life serving someone he didn’t know.

The man he saved and dragged to the alley is a different story. Davan desperately wants to get to know him better, but the people who hurt Greyson have other ideas. Chased through the streets of the city, Davan and Greyson have to fight for their future. Together they just might have a chance at happiness.

Review

I enjoyed this. It was a good sequel.
If you enjoyed book 1 you’ll enjoy following up on Greyson whom we met in book 1.

There wasn’t a whole lot different from the first book , but I did appreciate learning a bit more about this world and seeing the slightly different aspects Davan brought to the omega theme.

Recent Release: Defender (The Lost Pack #1) by Claire Cullen

Good Reads

Blurb

A mission gone wrong forces Brax’s alpha team to become something more—a pack.

In a world that no longer welcomes packs, it’s all Brax can do to hold his team together. Four alphas without omegas is a recipe for disaster. And now that they’re civilians, with the military watching their every move, it’s not going to be easy to keep the truth about their pack hidden.

Brax’s most pressing problem is his buddy Duke’s stolen son. Everywhere he turns for help is a dead end, until chance introduces him to Oliver, the capable, captivating omega—and legal advocate. Brax’s luck might finally be turning around. But can he trust Oliver with more than just their legal troubles—can he trust him with his secrets?

Oliver has everything he could want in life—a successful career, the respect of his peers, an apartment in the city. But not an alpha. Been there, done that. No shifter he’s dated could handle the fact that, some days, Oliver’s job comes first. When the death of his estranged parents takes him back to his childhood home, he meets Brax—the handsome, troubled doctor who just might be the exception to the rule…

Defender is a novel-length shifter romance, featuring mpreg, cake, stubborn alphas, and some scenes not suitable for readers under the age of eighteen.

Review

I loved this so much! This is like an alternate world where people have tried to subjugate their shifter side to 15 minutes a day and ignore the draw of being in packs for the “benefit” of human law.

In this case the men “accidentally” became a pack and are now dealing with those ramifications.

I like that the omega nature is challenged and the alpha nature is modified, too. Though it follows somewhat predictable lines it’s not so stereotypical as to be mundane.

The romance is slow moving and sweet with a moderate amount of heat. The bad guys are reasonably bad and not “super villains”. All in all a win!

Highly recommended to fans of the subgenre.

Recent Release: Savage Wolf by Angelique Voisen

Good Reads

Blurb

Finn Brenner’s time is up. To save his brother’s hide, he promised to give himself to a sadistic Alpha who only sees Omegas as toys. Finn’s having second thoughts but there’s nowhere to run. When it’s time to face the music, Finn is thrown into a hellish hunt where he’s the prize. The last thing Finn expects is a savior in the form of a savage black wolf.

Jakob Stone’s barely holding onto his humanity. He buried his grief and lingered in the skin of his beast. When he hears Finn’s cry for help he knows this Omega is the one he’s been searching for his entire life. Jakob would do anything in his power to keep Finn safe, even if that means going up against an entire pack.

Review

This was a great find! Jakob is nearly feral and Finn’s alpha is pretty much going to kill him as do anything else.
The romance between Finn and Jakob is fairly predictable with the Alpha/omega thing playing out as it always does, but the world building is pretty good and the story moves along quickly.
All in all I enjoyed it and will look for more from this series/author.

Barren, unwanted—a lot of omegas would have given up. But not Holland. Tired of living down to other’s opinions, he reaches for something more and seduces the new Alpha, only to fall so far in love he can’t see the moon for the trees.

Quin’s ghosts won’t leave him alone. He lives like a ghost himself, but Holland’s shining light gives him courage to reach for healing and, maybe, a family. Except Holland has his own unhealed wounds and he refuses to mate, until disaster in another pack reminds them both how fragile life can be.

From that disaster rises a new determination, and Quin and Holland set out to change their world.

And through it all, the secret of the True Omega begins to unveil itself, bringing hope and fear in its wake.

141,000 words full of love and family, disaster and triumph.

Review

This is another great addition to the series. Holland was rejected for being barren – but… he’s still got loads to offer and Quin’s damage allows him to “need” someone just enough to get over the Alpha nonsense.

The story is long and involved and as usual I think could use some stiff editing, but it’s still very enjoyable and a must for anyone who loves mpreg, shifters, the author and this series.

Nick J Russo narrates this series, and honestly , if it wasn’t him, I’m not sure I’d be able to listen to hours and hours of this series. I enjoy his voice so much that I get lost in the story again and am not tempted to just skim ahead.

Recommended.

Bax is desperate. Recently widowed, he takes his pups and flees his pack to avoid a new mate who wants him – but not his babies.
At Mercy Hills, he finds the help he’d hoped for, but also a man who both attracts and unnerves him. He doesn’t want another alpha mate, or even any mate, though he knows an omega has to have one. But Abel is unlike any other alpha he’s ever met, and the hope that had been crushed out of him begins to grow again in the warmth of Abel’s kindness and strength.
Bax is a dream come true for Abel – smart, loyal, strong, and loving. Everything Abe’s ever looked for in a mate. Except the independent omega has no reason to trust an alpha, and Abel’s going to have to work his way through layers of hurt if he wants to convince Bax he’s safe opening his heart.
But to keep him, he’ll have to fight for him.

Review

I read this a while ago and I’ll admit that it’s very long so when I listened to it, I may have skimmed a bit.

Bax is an integral character in this series and his story sets the tone for many omegas to come, so I feel this book, especially, needs to be read to appreciate the others going forward.

From previous reviews, you know that this is a sort of dystopian society where shifters are ostracized to “camps” and made to act like prisoners in the world. They can be themselves but only in certain places.

The male pregnancy thing is not a secret but is definitely kept hidden from non shifters.

In general, the adults spend next to no time as wolves, and this is my main criticism of the series. The children do but the adults don’t seem to shift much.

Most of this is about the Alpha/Omega dynamic and male pregnancy and living on the outskirts of society.

I loved how Bax comes into his own and in later books you’d have a hard time recognizing the meek Omega we are introduced to at the beginning of the book.

If you’re a fan of male pregnancy and Alpha/Omega dynamics you’ll really like this. If you’re more a traditional shifter fan, maybe not.

Nick Russo narrates this, and if it hadn’t been for him I’m not sure I’d have listened to this at all as it’s quite long and full of minutia.

Recent Release: Like Smoke (Vikings #1) by Catherine Lievens

Blurb
Trygve is used to being on his own. His wife rejected him when he became a draugr around the year 800, and he hasn’t trusted anyone but his best friend, Thorvald, since then. He lives and works alone, and he has no intentions on changing that.

Then he meets Isaac.

Isaac’s life has been rotten—he was kicked out by his parents when he was sixteen, he was kidnapped from the streets at twenty, and he spent the last eight years chained to a wall and being abused. So when a tall blond man, appears out of thin air and kills the man who’s been torturing Isaac for so long, he begs for death—or to be taken away.

Trygve knows he should dump Isaac in a hospital and go back to his solitary life, but Isaac needs help, and for some reason, he seems to trust Trygve, so Trygve lets him stay with him. Neither of them expects their unlikely friendship will become more, and they take things slowly, for both their sakes.

But someone is after Isaac, and Trygve knows he will do anything to protect the first person he’s loved in more than a thousand years.

Even if that means killing people he’s not being paid to kill.

Review

This had some really interesting world building.  The Berzerker/Viking as a Vampire type is new to me but- of course – the Alpha male falling for the small guy is not new and one of Catherine’s hallmarks.

If you are a fan of the author’s other works you’ll probably like this as well and if you haven’t read her but you like the big guy dominating the small guy and rescuing him all the time – this will be up your alley.

I enjoyed it for the humor, the unique world building and the predictable HEA.  I also LOVE the cover!
