OS: Skylar Cates, the author of Secrets of You has stopped by to share some thoughts about sappy movies and she’s got a giveaway too! Thanks so much for sharing with us today!!
TEN, SAPPY ROMANTIC MOVIES (I WISH I’D WRITTEN THE SCREENPLAY)
Yes, this list is a total sap-fest. But who cares? I love them! Here are some romantic movies in no particular order:
1. Dirty Dancing
Maybe it’s because my mom’s family owned a similar New York summer place in the Catskills (no lie), or maybe it’s because Baby was not very pretty or flirtatious. She was gawky and goofy. He was a bad boy with a heart of gold (although how many bad boys dance like that, really?). She taught him to value his own worth. He taught her to become an adult.
Bonus: Nobody puts baby in a corner
2. The Big Easy
First of all, it’s set in New Orleans. I love that city! Then you have two sexy MCs, played by Ellen Barkin and Dennis Quaid, who are on opposite sides of a police investigation. Sure the plot might be a bit cheesy, but he teaches her how to enjoy sex and she teaches him about honesty. What I love about the film is how they have real insecurities and real chemistry.
She loses her uptight demeanor in a hurry, but never compromises her values for him. The sex scene focuses on her pleasure a lot –not something we see often enough in films—even if it is mostly suggestion.
Bonus: He has a stuffed gator that he cuddles.
Ah, the best friend’s brother trope. Yes, please! What I truly enjoyed about Shelter is the gentle quality between the main characters, Zach and Shaun. Shaun waits for Zach to figure things out.
Bonus: The scene where Zach follows his passion and goes for it. Whew!
It’s science fiction meets a road film. The starman and human hit the road to escape the unfair government. He is an alien with such humanity. He had me the moment he brings the deer to life! Yay for kindness over ignorance.
Bonus: A young Jeff Bridges before the Big Lebowski
5. The Notebook
It’s the love that last decades. Sigh. Through sickness and health, this couple gets it. The dates are super cute: Noah teaches Allie to drive and rows her in sweet boat ride. But it wouldn’t work for me without the older version of the couple. Ryan Gosling and James Garner are both amazing in different ways.
Bonus: Hot kisses in the rain
6. Latter Day Saints
Another favorite trope of mine at work in this movie. The virgin character and the experienced one. Christian is a jerk at the start of the movie and then redeems himself, which I’m a total sap for! Aaron is so earnest and wonderful too. By the end, the experienced Christian, who never has fallen in love, has fallen so, so hard. Although parts of this are pretty sad, their loyalty to each other is so touching.
Bonus: A happy ending
7. The Empire Strikes Back
Hans Solo and Princess Leia can’t stand each other and are stuck fighting together. Hooray!
Yep, I love bickering lovers suffering from sexual frustration.
Bonus: Chewy Bromance
8. Bridget Jones’s Diary
She’s a bit of a hot mess, isn’t she? Who doesn’t love that? Bridget has no clue as she mistakenly wants the playboy character for her love interest. It takes time to see how awesome Darcy can be, but when she does…It’s lovely.
Bonus: Colin Firth’s expressions
9. Beauty and the Beast
While I anticipate the remake, I’ll give a nod to the Disney original. Beauty is smart and does not fall for the pretty boy jerk. She reads and thinks for herself. And the beast? He’s all kinds of grumpy awesomeness. My only issue is I prefer the beast stays a beast. Prince version? Meh.
Bonus: Some fun songs
10. Fourth Man Out
Okay, it’s a movie that centers more on friendship than the romance, but I really enjoyed the fresh quality of a film showcasing coming out to your besties. Adam struggles to find love and there is a romance, but the real romance for me was how much his friends loved him.
Bonus: Chord Overstreet
Your turn. Give me some of your favorite sappy movies!
It’s never easy to find redemption.
Carrying scars and regrets, River Darcourt avoids too much intimate contact. Among his friends, he is known as a quiet loner. Forget about love—it’s not something he will consider—until sweet, young, and tempting Morgan Hayes becomes his housemate. River closed his heart long ago, but the attraction is impossible to deny.
Morgan Hayes needs a change. He is moving out of his critical father’s home and in with his friends, including his secret/not-so-secret crush, River. Having feelings for River is a terrible idea. But what is a guy to do when the annoyingly sexy mechanic is just across the hall?
While Morgan has overcome ugliness and is ready for love, he’s just not sure River ever will be. They have both experienced pain in their lives. So Morgan dares River to take a chance, and love will either break their fractured hearts in more pieces or, just possibly, make them whole again.
