Jared Thomas has lived his whole life in the small mountain town of Coda, Colorado. He can’t imagine living anywhere else. Unfortunately, the only other gay man in town is twice his age and used to be his teacher, so Jared is resigned to spending his life alone. Until Matt Richards walks into his life, that is. Matt has just been hired by the Coda Police Department, and he and Jared immediately become friends. Matt claims he is straight, but for Jared, having a sexy friend like Matt is way too tempting. Facing Matt’s affair with a local woman, his disapproving family, and harassment from Matt’s co-workers, Jared fears they’ll never find a way to be together-if he can even convince Matt to try.
So this is one of those “iconic” series in the m/m genre (in my opinion). It ranks up with Amy Lane’s “Promise Rock series, Mary Calmes “Matter of Time” series, and Tere Michael’s “Love and Devotion” series. So you probably have an idea about this, but maybe haven’t read it? I don’t know why you wouldn’t – it’s frickin’ awesome!- but I’ve never formally reviewed it and it’s coming out in Hard Back so… here goes!
Jared is a small town guy and happy (for the most part) to be there, but he gets lonely. He has some friends with benefits arrangements, but he longs for a more permanent thing.
Matt comes to town, hired by the local Police Department, and right away he and Jared become friends. They both love the outdoors, football and beer. Two best buds, right? Well…. Jared is gay and Matt is straight – so… why is Matt having “feelings” for Jared? And what’s a guy supposed to do with those feelings?
Eventually – as you can imagine – they hook up as more than friends – but the story doesn’t merely end there – that’s part of the magic of this series. Matt struggles with the physicality of loving Jared. He has a hard time “penetrating or being penetrated” by Jared and this causes the couple some stress. Matt also has to worry about being out in a small police force in a bigoted town. He is also crazy jealous of Jared’s exes.
So… lots of drama and angst. But also lots and lots of steamy sex scenes, really tender and wonderful emotional moments, sometimes gritty and real issues and most of all a very sweet and sentimental love story that starts the series off right.
I love this series. Love, love, love it! I love all the characters and the following books in the series add on to their relationship and show us the depth of the love these guys have for one another. Marie Sexton is a fantastic writer and it shows. She’s not afraid to tackle difficult questions and she doesn’t always give the “typical” responses one would expect.
Kudos for her bravery and her excellent story – I highly recommend this and the entire series!
