Mine Audiobook by Mary Calmes Narrated by Caleb Dickinson

mine audioBlurb

Trevan Bean has a job that’s going from illegal to frightening, a boyfriend who may not be in his right mind, and a guardian angel who might actually be evil incarnate. Add to that the reappearance of his boyfriend’s estranged family, death threats, kidnapping, and the struggle of saving money to realize a dream, and Trevan has a lot on his plate. But Trevan is up to the challenge: he promised Landry a happily ever after, and Landry’s going to have it if it kills him! It just might. Landry Carter was a broken doll when they met two years ago but has grown into a partner who can stand at Trevan’s side… most of the time. Now that Trevan’s life just got scary – and Landry just got himself kidnapped – Trevan has to hope Landry’s love stays strong through this newest challenge, because the happily ever after won’t happen if Trevan has to go it alone.

Landry and Trevan meet at a party. Landry is used to being used and gives himself away. He was kicked out for being gay and moved far away to go to school and has been on his own since.

Trevan is a runner for a crime boss. He doesn’t kill or do anything more illegal than collecting debts, but he has to be tough. He’s got important contacts keeping him safe, but his life is far from simple. He wants to get out, open a restaurant and keep Landry safe and grounded.

Landry – with the help of Trevan – is an up and coming jewelry maker and artist. Without Trevan he is… lost.

Their relationship isn’t perfect. Both are ridiculously protective and possessive and jealous. But they love one another passionately. Together they fit. Together they work.

Apart… not so much.

Trouble starts up again when Landry’s long lost brother comes to town claiming his mother wants to see him because she has cancer. Nobody believes this story but they can’t say no. So they travel to Las Vegas since the timing is right and they need to get out of town anyway.

While in Vegas everything blows up. Trevan’s boss is killed. Landry is kidnapped. Landry’s family implodes and Trevan is offered a life he can’t refuse.

Finally, when the dust settles, it’s Landry and Trevan together again, and back on the path they’d been planning… forever.

This is one of Mary’s dark stories. She likes her share of angst (ie 3 years of separation for Jory and Sam – no- I can’t forget that!) but these guys are really perfectly flawed. They are intense. They are passionate. But they love one another and together they are beautiful.

The secondary character, Conrad (aka Terrance – we met him in Duncan and Aaron’s book Parting Shot) is awesome. So fierce, but on the edge, super-hero tough, but so tender. I’m hoping we’ll one day see him in his own story.

Caleb Dickinson – hand picked by Mary for the narration – does an amazing job with the voices. Trevan is awesome, just as I’d pictured he’d sound and Landry is as sweet as I’d hoped.

If you are a Mary fan you won’t want to miss this in audio format, the book is wonderful and the audio only adds to the enjoyment.

I highly recommend this for fans of “broken MCs” and to all of Mary’s loyal subjects.

Dirty Secret (Book 2 Cole McGinnis Series) by Rhys Ford Narrated by Greg Tremblay

dirty secretBlurb

Loving Kim Jae-Min isn’t always easy: Jae is gun-shy about being openly homosexual. Ex-cop turned private investigator Cole McGinnis doesn’t know any other way to be. Still, he understands where Jae is coming from. Traditional Korean men aren’t gay-at least not usually where people can see them.
But Cole can’t spend too much time unraveling his boyfriend’s issues. He has a job to do. When a singer named Scarlet asks him to help find Park Dae-Hoon, a gay Korean man who disappeared nearly two decades ago, Cole finds himself submerged in the tangled world of rich Korean families, where obligation and politics mean sacrificing happiness to preserve corporate empires. Soon the bodies start piling up without rhyme or reason. With every step Cole takes toward locating Park Dae-Hoon, another person meets their demise-and someone Cole loves could be next on the murderer’s list.

Jae and Cole are trying to make a go of their relationship while still hiding things from Jae’s family.

There is another mystery, this time involving the fabulous Scarlet, whom we met in book 1. There’s a missing person and lots and lots of Korean people involved. (I highly recommend the audio version for help keeping track of all these people!)

What makes this book special is the deepening relationship between Jae and Cole. It. Is. Intense.

Their blossoming love is amazing to watch unfold and Rhys is the consummate story teller using rich language and evocative phrasing to add to their deep commitment to each other.

Greg Tremblay does amazing work with the narration, giving all the characters unique voices and creating the absolute PERFECT mood for both the mystery and the love story. A better narrator for this series could not be conceived!

I love this series so much and I think book two really hooks the reader into the love affair between Jae and Cole.

Best Friends by Cat Blaine

best friendsBlurb

Carrick and Malcolm have been best friends since they were kids. They do everything together. One night, after they’ve had a little too much to drink, they share a hot, sensual kiss that ends up going a lot further than either man expected.

After that night both men struggle with lusty feelings for one another. Malcolm tells Carrick he wants to try and have a real relationship with him. Carrick panics, terrified of other people’s opinions and the two friends have a falling out. Alone and missing his best buddy, Carrick must decide if being without Malcolm is more painful than anything his peers might say.

Carrick and Malcolm are drunk one night… and horny. They kiss a bit… and some more, but the next day go back to being “buds”. Except… Carrick can’t forget what he and Mal did. He’s now jealous when he sees Mal out at the bar and he can’t quite come to grips with what that says about himself.

Mal (who we only know about through Carrick’s eyes) is also confused. He seems to want to keep their friendship but he keeps saying and doing things that make Carrick confused. What does he want?

This is a short but sexy, double GFY. Neither has any real experience with a guy before, but they know they’re attracted to the other. They’re best friends but in jobs where being out might be a problem.

First they have to work through their attraction them decide what to be in public. I enjoyed watching them navigate the physical and emotional side of their relationship. Though it was fast, it did try to be realistic.

I highly recommend this to fans of GFY, and best friends to lovers story lovers.

In Your Eyes (Part of the Mates Series) by Cardeno C

A Book in the Mates Series

in your eyesBlurb

Raised to become Alpha of the Yafenack pack, Samuel Goodwin dedicates his life to studying shifter laws, strengthening his body, and learning from his father. Taking control comes easily to Samuel, but relating to people, including those he’s supposed to lead, is a constant challenge.

When Samuel meets Korban Keller, the son of a neighboring pack’s Alpha, he reacts with emotion instead of intellect for the first time in his life. Resenting the other shifter for putting him off-balance, Samuel first tries to intimidate Korban and then tries to avoid him. What he can’t do is forget Korban’s warm eyes, easy smile, and happy personality.

When a battle between their fathers results in tragedy, Samuel and Korban are thrown together. With his world crashing down around him, Samuel must save his pack and show them he can lead. But first, Korban needs to save Samuel by inspiring him to feel. Two very different men with a tumultuous history must overcome challenges from all sides and see past the rules they’ve been taught to realize they are destined to fit together.

Ok, so I’m a fan girl of Cardeno C. I just love every one of her books. But – let me tell you – I really super love her Mate Series. I adore shifter romances and hers are the epitome of sweet and sensual, with just the right amount of magic and angst involved.

Cardeno is so good at giving us these characters who, though super smart, just don’t get it. That’s Samuel. There are so many signs pointing to why Korban gets under his skin, but he just can’t see the truth. He tries and tries and tries to be the best Alpha-in-training he can be, but something is missing.

That missing piece is Korban, only Samuel doesn’t know it. When tragedy strikes and the two shifters are finally thrown together it’s like the world finally makes sense. Things now work like they should.

One thing I like about most of Caredno’s books, she gives us time with the couple together. Rather than end the story with the two of them finding love, they get a little time together to show us how they work and act as a couple. I just love that!

It’s a pretty short book, but packed with wonderful, touching, smexy and sweet scenes.

I highly recommend this book and give it a 6 out of 5 stars!
(You don’t have to read the first two books in the series, but they do give a little more background.)

Signs of Life (Resilient Love Book 2) by Melanie Hansen

A Resilient Love Story

Successful lawyer Jeremy Speer has it all—a loving husband, a beautiful home, and a cherished dream that’s about to become reality. He’s learned not to take happiness for granted, meeting the challenges of life and love head-on with unwavering commitment and fierce devotion. A series of tragic events leave Jeremy shattered, adrift on a sea of unimaginable pain. He’s able to piece his life back together, but instead of embracing it, he merely exists, using isolation and punishing physical exertion to keep the world at bay.

High school teacher Kai Daniels has a heart for at-risk kids—he was one himself, and a teenage brush with the law and some troubled years behind bars left him scarred inside and out. With courage, hard work, and the support of friends, he’s built a fulfilling life that leaves no time for a relationship.

An intense encounter with Kai at a gay club ignites a spark in Jeremy that he thought was extinguished forever, but he’s unwilling to destroy the fragile peace he’s managed to create, and he leaves Kai humiliated and disappointed. Things should have ended there, but a bizarre occurrence brings the two together in a way neither of them expected.

Organic Chemistry (Book 1) Audiobook by Andrew Grey Narrated by Nick J Russo

Brendon Marcus lives for his work. A boy genius who fast-tracked his way to college professor by his early 20s, he doesn’t know any other way to be. People confound him. So when Josh Horton, the assistant football coach, pursues him, Brendon isn’t sure what to make of him. Josh has his own problems. His successful parents aren’t particularly happy with his career path, and some of the players don’t like having a gay assistant coach. He begins to have doubts, but Brendon makes the world look a little brighter.

First, let me say that I am a fan of Andrew Grey and I am a huge fan of the Geek/Jock story, so this hit my buttons in a big way. I like that Andrew made Brendon a strong if very naïve geek and that the relationship between him and Josh wasn’t a typical “I am your hero since I am so big” type of relationship. It was very sweet, pretty short, and had a little hot sex to make it an all around good read.

(This was one of my first audio books reviewed.  That site crashed so I’m re-posting it here  Funny how your opinion changes as time passes!  )

So, I don’t know how many of you read the book before the audio version or vice versa or one and not the other, but – so far in my experience – I have always read the book first. This is important to note, because it means that I had already formed pre-conceived notions about the “voice” of the MCs. That being said, I think that Nick J Russo did a good job. His voice is smooth and nice to listen to. He tries really hard to give all the characters a separate “voice” and though this can be distracting at times, it’s also a nice touch. It helps to keep clear who is doing the speaking.

Josh’s “character” as read by Nick wasn’t how I would have read him (at all) – but it wasn’t bad, just different. Brendon is done very well, and matches what I would have imagined.

(Now looking back on things – my hero worship of Nick makes me appreciate how awesome this narration is!)

Nick tries to add in appropriate emotion and (ahem) groans where appropriate and that’s also a nice touch.

As a staunch proponent of reading then listening – I will say again that this is a good interpretation, and certainly worth listening to, even if you haven’t read it first.

Taxes and Tardis by NR Walker

Brent is a jock, Logan a geek, these men are a world apart. But if opposites attract, maybe it’s the differences between them that make it worth the fight.

Brent Kelly is a laid-back tradesman whose only concerns are drinks with friends and which man to bed next. In need of a new accountant to sort out his nightmarish shoebox of tax receipts, he’s referred to Logan Willis.

He doesn’t expect to be intrigued by the science fiction-loving, geeky guy with dark-rimmed glasses and a TARDIS blue shirt. So his fascination with the soft-spoken Englishman surprises him, and their mutual attraction is completely unexpected. He most certainly never expects to fall in love.

One a jock and the other a geek, both men know the differences between them are vast and could cause problems. But in this opposites-attract erotic drama, maybe it’s the differences between them that make staying together worth the fight.

Brent is a self-made electrician, he plays football and is a fairly laid-back, jockish type guy. He goes in to do his taxes and find himself captivated by the nerdy accountant in the blue shirt, Logan.

Logan is an ex-pat from Britain. He’s slim and decidedly geeky. When the cute electrician starts showing an interest by drawing him in with questions about Dr Who he can’t help but be entranced.

This is a wonderful, almost no angst story about two men discovering just how opposites can attract.

I loved how open Brent was. He didn’t try to beat around the bush, but put himself out there. And though a little guarded, Logan reciprocated. The one moment of “Misunderstanding” was quickly laid to rest and we got our happily ever after.

The smexy times are hot and the ILYs are really sweet.

I absolutely adored this and I highly recommend it!
