Guest Post: Nic Starr for Lies and Deception

Thanks for having me here today, Morgan, as I celebrate the release of Lies & Deception.
The inspiration for the story came from two places. Firstly, Dreamspinner Press put out a call for stories with an undercover theme. That submission call was brewing in the back of my mind as I walked past a Sydney pub. I saw a sign on the door warning that outlaw bikie gang colours (such as clothing with club insignia) were not allowed to be worn inside. Thus the idea for a story featuring an undercover cop infiltrating a bikie gang was born.
Lies & Deception tells the story of Mitch and Finn. Mitch is an undercover cop and Finn is the younger brother of the motorcycle gang club president. Mitch thinks he’s falling for a bad boy, something that doesn’t sit well with him and risks his job. Finn thinks he’s in love with a criminal, when all he wants to do is escape from that lifestyle.
Here’s an excerpt from the book. It’s from Mitch’s point of view, a conversation he has with his partner, as he realises just how deep he’s falling.

Detective Mitch O’Neill is the ideal man to infiltrate the Soldiers of Fury Motorcycle Club. His ex-boyfriend, Peter, is pledged with the club, which provides Mitch with the perfect cover. Despite the relationship ending badly, he’s come to terms with Peter’s drug addiction and his inability to help. All Mitch wants now is to bring down the Soldiers and the club president, Rocky Cummings, once and for all.
Finn Cummings hates everything the motorcycle club stands for, but he’s unable to escape his brother’s clutches. When Mitch is assigned as Finn’s driver, they spend countless hours together, and the saying proves true—opposites do attract. Finn agonizes over his feelings for Mitch—the last thing he wants is to involve himself further with criminals, not when he wants to leave that world. Mitch tries to come to terms with falling for a member of the outlaw club he’s determined to destroy.
If they can survive the fallout from Rocky’s violence and the investigation, they might discover it’s not a case of opposites attract after all.

“I’m not sure I understand it myself. Fuck, it’s been quick and come from total left field, but I’ve got feelings. Finn’s… I don’t know…. There’s something different about him, something special.”
“Mitch, he’s a Cummings—”
“You think I don’t know that?” Mitch sat upright and squared his shoulders. “You think I don’t think about that every minute of every day—”
“And that’s what I’m worried about.” Ross’s voice rose in volume to meet Mitch’s, and Mitch cringed as he realized he was nearly shouting. “You shouldn’t be thinking of Finn Cummings as any more than a means to an end. That kid is part of the Soldiers of Fury hierarchy, and that means he’s the bad guy.”
The words were like daggers to Mitch’s heart, each one piercing with pain. He deflated, and his words dropped to almost a whisper, because no matter what he knew about Finn, no matter how much he knew Finn hated his brother and didn’t agree with everything the club stood for, there was no changing the facts—Finn was still a member of an outlaw bikie gang. “I know. Oh fuck, Ross. What the hell am I going to do? He’s a criminal.”
“You’re in love with him, aren’t you?”
Mitch’s eyes snapped up. “What?”
“Oh Jesus, mate. He’s gotten to you, gotten to you deep. I haven’t seen you like this since…. Actually I don’t think I’ve ever seen you like this.”
The thing was, Mitch knew Ross was right; he just didn’t want to say it out loud. Voicing his feelings would make it real, too real, and the reality of the situation was something he wanted to avoid as long as possible.

I hope you enjoy the story and meeting Mitch and Finn.
Happy reading,
