Uncaged by Lisa Oliver Blog Tour

Banner300x250Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Lisa and Thomas J. Oliver, authors of Uncaged (Shifter’s Uprising #1).

[Thomas] Hi there, thank you for hosting us here today. Our book, Uncaged is set in a world where shifters can be imprisoned for life if they break any shifter laws. The laws are upheld by a force called the Elite who work for a ruling family, the Masons.

[Lisa] At the heart of this story is a true mate romance. Lucas is a hybrid shifter who is fighting his way up through the ranks of cage fighters. Carlin is an Alpha Wolf shifter who has already attained one of the top positions and is quite happy with his lot…until he meets Lucas and realizes they are true mates. Now freedom is on his mind, and he will fight to get it.

This book is a little different from my other books (the Cloverleah Pack, Bound and Bonded, Stockton Wolves and the Alpha and Omega series) but that is to be expected with a collaborative effort. For me the important element of the story was the love growing between two men…

[Thomas] …and for me it was the fight scenes and the underlying theme of this series which is how men will act under an oppressive ruling family. I think we got a good balance and hopefully readers will think so too.

  • Tell us something no one else knows about your characters.

[Thomas] Well, Carlin loves to cook but it’s not something he gets a lot of chance to do very often…

[Lisa]…and Lucas loves to listen to jazz music, something even Carlin doesn’t know.

  • Have you ever written something that made you cry?

[Lisa] I have – some of the Cloverleah Pack books, like where Scott walks away from Damien in book 3, and Anton acts like such an ass to Troy in book 4 – for some reason both of those scenes made me tear up at the thought of it, and I had to work extra hard to get those men their HEA.

[Thomas] This is my first book, so the short answer is no. But I imagine Mom will have me thinking of some soppy stuff in the next one…not that it will make me cry, but Mom probably will.

  • Have you ever co-written with someone before?

[Lisa and Thomas] No.

[Lisa] I have always wanted to collaborate with someone else. Writing can be quite a lonely occupation. I never thought my first co-writing project would be with my son, but it was really fun to do and I am looking forward to working on the next book.

  • What is the most difficult part of writing for you?

[Thomas] I didn’t realize that the writing process itself took so long. I have these ideas in my head, but when we came to putting them on paper it was like…you have to be able to convey what’s in your head, clearly enough on paper so others can see what you are thinking. I found that hard – as well as the sex scenes…my Mom did those and no, I didn’t even talk to her about them…talking to my mother about sex is just freaky.

[Lisa] Yep, you left all that to me, lol. Not a problem. I have trouble with action scenes, I always have. That is what made writing this book so much more fun because I had someone who I could talk to about specific movements, sensations and things like that – there are more action scenes in this book than in any of my other ones.

  • Name your four most important food groups.

[Thomas] I try and eat healthy when I can – fruit, vegetables, a lot of water, and fish/chicken. I can guess what Mom is going to say.

[Lisa] too right, lol. Chocolate, chocolate, tea (for fluids) and more chocolate.

Thank you Lisa and Thomas!

Here is an excerpt from their book:

Carlin knew he was behaving like an idiot pacing up and down the floor of his small apartment, but he couldn’t stop. How long did it take for one man to have a shower for fucks sake? He’d ordered food for the both of them. Having been a fighter for more than five years, Carlin knew that Lucas would be hungry – hopefully for food and sex. But if the bloody man didn’t get his skates on then Carlin would eat alone and get straight to dessert when Lucas arrived.

About to call Brian and find out where his errant fuck had gone, Carlin caught the sound of people outside of his door. He threw himself on the couch and picked up a book. He didn’t want Lucas thinking he was waiting for him or anything.

Brian came in, Lucas a few steps behind him.

“Alpha Fighter Carlin. This is Lucas, ranked fifth after today.”

Carlin was surprised. He’d heard the man had moved swiftly up the ranks, but he didn’t realize that Lucas was so close to a shot for an Alpha ranking. In theory, one more fight and he might have to fight Lucas in the ring. For a moment Carlin was tempted to send the man away. He did have some conscience, even after so many years of being a fighting machine. He didn’t want to have to kill someone who had been in his bed.

But then Lucas stepped past Brian, and Carlin was caught in angry eyes. Silver eyes. Something tugged at Carlin’s brain – the eye color had some significance, didn’t it? But then Lucas’s scent hit Carlin’s nose and any rational thought fell straight out of his brain.

“Leave, Brian,” Carlin said, standing up and not breaking his stare with Lucas. He knew his body radiated the power he was famous for, and guessed he might look intimidating, as he heard Brian whisper to Lucas as he scurried out of the door, “I told you not to stare at an Alpha. You’re dead meat pup.”

“Better dead than a fuck toy,” Lucas snarled – his comment for Brian, but those silver eyes stayed fixed on Carlin.

“I agree,” Carlin said, his voice dropping as he got closer. Before Lucas could react, he reached his hand around, grabbing Lucas by the nape and pushing the man’s face into his throat. Whatever Lucas was going to say was muffled by Carlin’s skin, although the man was kicking, punching and doing everything he could to get free.

“Sniff, damn you,” Carlin said urgently. “Fucking sniff, and then I’ll let you go.”

Carlin felt Lucas quieten, although his body still stayed rigid in Carlin’s grasp. Lucas’s deep inhale was the only sound in the room. Carlin knew the moment Lucas had worked out what Carlin was trying to say.

Meet the authors:

Lisa Oliver had been writing non-fiction books for years when visions of half dressed, buff men started invading her dreams. Unable to resist the lure of her stories, Lisa decided to switch to fiction books, and now stories about her men clamor to get out from under her fingertips.

When Lisa is not writing, she is usually reading with a cup of tea always at hand. Her grown children and grandchildren sometimes try and pry her away from the computer and have found that the best way to do it, is to promise her chocolate. Lisa will do anything for chocolate.

Lisa loves to hear from her readers and other writers. You can friend her on Facebook here, or email her directly at

Thomas Oliver doesn’t have a lot of time for writing itself although he can talk about his ideas for hours. A construction worker by day, he has a wicked imagination and it was from sharing some of his ideas with Lisa, that the idea for this series was born.

When not working, Thomas is like any other young man. He loves to spend time with friends, his girlfriend and working on his car. His dream is to do up a project car – something mean, with attitude and plenty of power under the hood.

Anyone wanting to contact Thomas can do so through Facebook.

Into the Team by Rob Damon (Review)

into the teamBlurb

To honor his father, young footballer Todd Mackerson commits to his goal of playing for a professional team. When, at the age of 20, he is offered a place to train with one of England’s biggest clubs, he leaves home convinced his dream is within reach.

Being warned by his new team mates of the tough rules and hard training routines, Todd is undeterred. But when he discovers that the player’s way of bonding borders on the sexual, and that he must learn to accept the erotic affections that connect the team together, he wonders how far he can go for his dream.

But, after experiencing the care and attention men can give to each other, Todd feels awakened. Learning that each player has a special “partner” on the team, who they play and bond with as intimately as lovers, Todd becomes fascinated with the idea.

And when he develops feelings for one player in particular, he discovers how a stronger kind of romance – that between two men – can be pure and powerful enough to bring magic and success on the pitch.

Todd wants more than anything to be a star “footballer” (us Americans call it soccer!). He’s super excited when he gets invited to audition for one of the big name teams.

When he gets there he’s surprised by how much they want him and by some of what happens behind closed doors to help make the team so good.

He’s got a girlfriend, but he’s told he can’t really see her during the season to keep his energy on the team. Instead he’s told to focus his energies with his teammates. Though he’s skeptical, he doesn’t want to give up his chance to be among the great players on the team.

Eventually he finds his place on the team and is excited he made the right choice.

Boy… I don’t think I’m the right audience for this book. From the blurb it looked intriguing – I was kinda expecting a straight guy to be forced to explore some of his more “gay” instincts and have him find love in the arms of a fellow team mate.

Well … no.

First, there is a lot of terminology and soccer stuff and colloquialisms that went over my head.

Second, there is absolutely no love story that I could find in this book.

Third, there is sex with women, sex with other guys and the one guy who looks like he might be “paired with” in any way (romantic or on the team) does not have sex with him til the end.

Frankly I just didn’t get it. So… I assume I am not the target audience. To me it read like a soccer/erotic fantasy where the dreamer not only makes it into the big leagues with soccer but gets to mess around with hot guys while never being gay and still keeping a girlfriend on the side.

Not my cup of tea, shall we say.

I found nothing “romantic” about this, and that’s what I read for. So again – I must not be the right person reading this.

The writing and editing were good, I guess. I had a hard time following it but I had a PDF and those are tough for me to read on my Kindle… so some of my problems might arise from that.

I vaguely wanted Todd to hook up with Daryl but I wasn’t really sure I cared by the end because there never seemed to be any point to the pairing – at least not romantically.

So… I’m going to hold off giving this any sort of rating because I just don’t think this was meant to be a romance and if that’s the case I wouldn’t have read it so I can’t say that I know how to rate this at all. I will just say that if you are looking for some sporty, erotic fiction this might be right up your alley, but if you want a romance or some deeper story about an emotional connection – I’d skip this.

Initiation (SSU #0.5) Audiobook by Maris Black Narrated by Chris Patton

Latino linebacker Emilio Madero has a huge crush on the new backup quarterback. He’s perfection in motion with his lean, muscled body and rich-boy good looks. But there’s no way in hell Emilio is going to do anything about it. He’ll just have to be content with fantasizing about the guy of his dreams and watching him from afar, because hitting on another player is out of the question. That is until Andrew turns the tables and makes the first move. Then all bets are off as the two of them drift into uncharted territory.

So this is a bit sized love story that is pretty angst-ridden.

Emilio has a crush on Andrew but fears he’s out-classed by the all American freshman. Not to mention that he can’t just be gay with a guy on the team.

The night the two get together is a truly awful event of hazing and then furtive sex between a jaded “player” and a golden-hearted virgin. Andrew has a lot to teach Emilio about love – the kind you do with your heart.

The smexy times are super hot between these two and in a short number of pages you get the idea that they just might have a chance at something – it’s definitely something that keeps you interested in the series.

But… be warned it is hard to read at times, there is a lot of pain in this story, but a lot of feels too. And a HFN, no HEA – not yet.

Chris Patton is amazing. I really have become quite a fan of his. I’ve enjoyed every one of his narrations and though he doesn’t do anything “over the top”, he is really good at handling emotions and making you part of the story. It definitely adds to the overall experience.

What He Left Behind by LA Witt

Release Day!

Can you ever have a second first time?

Josh Carver thinks it’s just another lunch with his best friend, Michael-until Michael confesses he just turned down a date with his hot veterinarian crush. It seems Michael’s abusive ex left him more scarred than Josh realized.

Josh and his husband, Ian, have done their best to help Michael leave his horrific past behind, but even Josh is stunned when Ian suggests that Josh help Michael with his fear of physical intimacy. After all, it isn’t like it would be the first time-Josh and Michael were once each other’s firsts.

A hesitant first kiss, and Josh and Michael’s natural attraction eases the way. But with Michael still balking at the prospect of sex with someone new, Ian steps into the breach.

Everything is fine and dandy until emotions become so entangled, their friendship-and a marriage-could be at risk.

Warning: Contains three guys who will do anything for each other, a hot tub that’s always the right temperature, and a cat with an attitude problem.

Wow. So – we start with Michael and he’s 5 years out of a HORRIBLE relationship where he is horrifically abused to the point that he’s got Stockholm Syndrome. He’s in therapy but he’s having trouble getting over the hurdle of sexual intimacy.

Michael and Josh have been friends forever and on again/off again lovers in the past. Michael shares his problem – not being able to date anymore because he can’t bear the thought of intimacy. Josh is crushed. He’s always known Michael as a very sensuous person with a high libido just like the hot guys on sites like He can’t stand the idea of Michael being trapped and alone due to the a-hole ex.

Josh is married to Ian (for 10 years now) and Ian is awesome. Ian hears the tale about Michael and suggests that since Michael trusts Josh – why doesn’t Josh try to get Michael out of his sexual slump.

So it starts. And it works. But it has a cost. Eventually – after some interesting and open conversations – it’s decided in invite Ian in (because Michael needs to experience someone NOT Josh, to test if he’s ready) and the chemistry is so good….

Luckily, our trio navigates some very tricky waters and we have a very nice HFN that looks to be a HEA.

So I’m very torn here. I really, really loved (and bought in) to most of this book. God! It was so horrible seeing the stuff Michael endured and Josh and he are clearly so good for one another and it was amazing how well LA Witt was able to guide them through the terrible PTSD and make it believable and touching and yet sexy too.

I also loved Ian. I totally bought into his caring for Michael, his devotion to Josh, his relationship with Josh and thought he and Josh had some amazingly hot sex.

I EVEN bought into the ménage aspect of the relationship. The chemistry is very obvious and though it maybe moved a bit quickly based on the slowness of the rest of the book, I still bought in.

However – my stumbling block is the final chapter. I wanted them to form a relationship, I think they might be able to do so. But – we NEVER saw them function together in any way other than sexually and so I can’t KNOW they will make it.

If I had a wish it’d be that the author gave us a few less sex scenes (there are a LOT) and some more relationship building between the three characters. As it stands I feel they are left on shaky ground and unless there is a sequel I can’t feel super great about it.

But… I did like 90% of the book and thought the touching way the abuse/recovery was handled was amazing and the smexy times were really hot!

So… 4.5 of 5 stars
