Another Shot by JH Knight (Heartsville Series)

another shotBlurb

The town of Heartsville means something different to everyone who lives there. For Aaron Forester, it’s a gay-friendly buffer between himself and the rest of the world. After being outed in high school and bullied to the point of violence, his family uprooted their lives and relocated to the small hamlet. He’s moved on from all that and now owns a popular café in the bustling shopping district. But after twenty years of happy living, Aaron’s past creeps up on him in the most unexpected way.

Brad Collins only has one regret and he’s carried it with him since he was a teenager. When he moves to Heartsville and gets set up on a blind date with the most adorable, engaging man he’s met in a long time, he couldn’t be happier. But Brad didn’t expect the guy to be the person he outed in high school—whom he’s now falling in love with.

Aaron and Brad hit it off instantly—in and out of the bedroom. But after a long overdue apology and a small serving of resentment, is their fledgling relationship worth another shot?

Aaron goes on a blind date set up by his sister and meets an amazing man, Brad. They click. Right away. They take it slowly. Texts, phone calls, dates… then they get physical. In the morning… Brad’s gone. Just like that. Aaron is devastated.

When Brad finally contacts Aaron he has an awful story to share. The question is: Can Aaron let go of the past? Can he forgive and forget?

This was another great book in the Heartsville series. Aaron and his sister have a great relationship (we met both of them in Bookmarked) and when she sets Aaron up, he trusts her judgment. Later, when his world is crashing down, she has terrific advice that helps him to make the right decision. She’s a great character and I hope we see more of her.

I didn’t get much of a vision of Brad, he seems nice enough and Aaron was a sweet-heart, but to me the important part of this story is Aaron’s healing and how he and his sister move through that together.

Aaron and Brad had great chemistry and I was pleased with their HEA, but I wished for more time with them as a couple, and more time getting to know Brad.

I’ve really been enjoying this series and I highly recommend it.

Commander’s Spitfire (Rescue For Hire book 5) Audiobook by Bellann Summer Narrated by Darcy Stark

commander's spitfireBlurb

Welcome to the world of Rescue for Hire. Meet the team members who make up a company that forms a family of heroes. For a year, computer expert Tony Grayson was another man’s dirty little secret. After months of pain from a huge betrayal, he can finally breathe again and sees a glimmer of a future. A rescue goes wrong bringing the boss’ brother Shane Miller – who’s big, dominating, and possessive – into Tony’s life. As far as Shane is concerned, the gorgeous Italian is his. Now he just has to lead the team for his brother, fix all the family drama, and put the pieces of Tony’s heart back together. Things finally get smoothed out, only to have his ex call, wanting Tony back. Tony’s decision could change lives and careers.
Can the foundation Shane has laid for their relationship be strong enough to keep Tony? The dynamics between a hard-edged bad boy and a hot-tempered, vulnerable yet gorgeous computer nerd heat up the sheets.

To sum up the first four books :(each can be read/listened to as a stand alone, but the characters in the preceding books make entrances in the following books) Cade Miller (brother to Shane) has a company he created called Rescue For Hire. It’s dedicated to saving people in natural disasters and finding lost people, etc. Each member of the team is highly skilled in one particular area and together there is nothing they can’t do. (Like the A Team!) In each of the previous books, one team member – very alpha male – finds his life partner. They always know immediately that the man they’ve met is their “forever guy” at first meeting and the bulk of the book is their conquest of said man. They also have some rescues to perform and at least once a book, one of the partners ends up in mortal danger.

Shane is an ex military man who has come to help Cade with his company now that he’s become more of a family guy and wants less field time. Shane meets Tony – already a member – whose had his heart smashed by a closeted pro-baseball player (and brother to another team member’s partner).

Tony doesn’t want to get involved again so soon after breaking up with his ball player – so he resists – but it’s futile.

These books are delicious fun! The men are unapologetically Alpha, and it totally works. Tony – who is no slouch himself- loves to be dominated and controlled and feels safe when someone takes over. He just has to let go first.

In the Audio format you get the bonus of having Darcy Stark for a narrator. He does each voice differently – giving each character a greater depth and giving the listener another perception and way to experience the character. In this case the man who steals the show is Shane. Oooo La La. Shane’s voice is panty-melting! It is deep and sensuous and controlling and masterful and…. Okay – you get the idea. Tony has a vague Italian heritage accent – punk-assed and spunky. Together – totally steamy!

I’m not so much into the spanking thing myself- but Shane makes it hot!

I highly recommend this series (in book or audio format) for fans of unapologetic Alpha males who control each and every situation but have a warm and gooey center for their life partner.

It’s a wonderful series and I recommend reading them/ listening to them in order to get the most from the series.

Romancing the Bouncer by JD Walker

Bennett “Ben” Pachowski has been a bouncer at Throwbacks for years. He likes his job, though he gets tired of being thought of as more brawn than brain simply because of his size. He also prefers to be romanced before sleeping with a man.

Ben’s favorite band, Rebel’s Ultimatum, occasionally plays at the club, which gives him an eyeful of the sexy bass player, Monty Mabuse. They’ve been eyeing each other for months, though Ben is content to flirt and nothing more, since “commitment” seems a foreign concept to the selfish, arrogant and flirtatious bass player.

But Monty wants Ben to become the next notch on his bedpost, and a devious trick to get what he wants blows up in his face.

Will Ben be able to forgive Monty for his deception? Perhaps, but if Monty wants to have a relationship with Ben, he needs to make some changes, and it remains to be seen whether he can become the kind of man Ben will respect, let alone love.

Sometimes, a little romance goes a long way…

Ben is a bouncer at a club. He thinks the bassist for the up and coming band that plays at the club is hot, but a player, so he stays far away, despite the mutual flirting.

One night the bassist, Monty, who won’t take no for an answer, sets up a “rescue” wherein Ben saves Monty from the unwanted advances of a “fan”. After the rescue he then essentially forces Ben to take him home where Monty feeds Ben liquor and then seduces him, despite Ben’s having told Monty repeatedly “NO!”

Ben is pissed when he realizes what’s happened the next day and refuses to see Monty. Monty, who by now is going on tour, is crushed and chastened.

Meanwhile, Ben gives up his career as a bouncer to work in a facility for the care of elderly people.

Monty continues to try to get Ben to forgive him and one day Ben does.

I could not get behind this book at all. What Monty did amounted to rape in my mind and Ben should NEVER have forgiven him. They never spent any time together as a couple so I have no idea if they’d make it or not (unlikely since Ben is happy in his new job and Monty needs to travel all the time with his newly emerging rock star status) and for me to believe that suddenly they want to be together and have some kids? Nope. I’m not buying it.

This book just didn’t seem at all plausible or even something that I wanted to support if I was willing to totally suspend my disbelief (which I love to do, I am a paranormal fan after all!).

I can’t recommend this book, and though the writing was fine, the story didn’t pass the grade for me. I always assume a writer can’t write every story for every person, so I will absolutely give this author another chance.

Head On by John Inman

When Squirt saves troubled Gordon from a terrible fate, Gordon finds a new light to follow and a new purpose to life.
At twenty-six, Gordon Stafford figures his days are numbered. At least he hopes they are. Wearied by guilt and regret stemming from a horrific automobile accident two years earlier in which a man was killed, Gordon wakes up every morning with thoughts of suicide. While the law puts Gordon to work atoning for his sins, personal redemption is far harder to come by.
Then Squirt—a simple homeless man with his own crosses to bear— saves Gordon from a terrible fate. Overnight, Gordon finds not only a new light to follow, and maybe even a purpose to his life, but also the possibility of love waiting at the end of the tunnel.
Gordon never imagined he’d discover a way to forgive himself, and in doing so, open his heart enough to gain acceptance and love—from the very person he hurt the most.

Gordon had it all going for him. He was on top of his game, awards and money, living the life he’d always imagined, when one bad decision takes it all away. One night, driving home drunk and texting, Gordon hits a car and kills a man. He ends up spending a year in jail and serving 2 more years in community service. But that isn’t enough. His guilt is slowly overwhelming him and what guilt leaves behind alcohol takes. Every day he contemplates taking his own life, and it is by the barest of threads that he continues on living.
Until one day…
One day Gordon meets a tow-headed angel of a man, Squirt, in need of rescuing. Later Squirt, returns the favor and saves Gordon, in more ways than one.
Squirt has his own demons and together he and Gordon go about saving each other with a love so sweet and pure it brings tears to your eyes.
They have some pretty significant hurdles to over-come, but when they do, all that’s left is a love story you will remember a long time.
This book will be a book that you read and read again. It is so amazingly touching. The guilt that Gordon hangs on to seems insurmountable. How can you bounce back from taking another life? His depression is deep and palpable. But through Squirt’s eyes, we can see how there is light at the end of the tunnel, and with enough love, even something as devastating as death can have a silver lining.
John Inman’s writing is crisp and clear and his ability to draw you into his character’s emotions is excelled only by his ability to tell their compelling story.
I loved how no small gesture went without affecting something or someone later on. It was a little like the Butterfly Effect in that one small thing ended up with a ripple effect that amounts to a tsunami.
In the end I was touched, happy and sad all at the same time, but I was so glad I had read the book and taken the journey.

I highly recommend this book and give it 5 of 5 stars.

Solitude by Anna Martin and Tia Fielding

When his whirlwind life in LA became too much, Liam Barton escaped to Solitude, a Utah ski resort. Not only did Liam leave his career as a gay porn star, he said good-bye to Gael Torres, his costar at Woodspring Manor Entertainment.

Rumors run rampant that Liam is dead. But Gael doesn’t believe the gossip. Knowing something is wrong with Liam, Gael hunts him down to get his answers.

Liam is shocked when Gael turns up in Solitude and takes up residence. To Liam’s chagrin, Gael is determined to stick around to help Liam through whatever spooked him enough to run away. As Gael breaks through Liam’s armor, both men begin to realize that no matter what life throws their way, they don’t have to deal with it alone.

Liam and Gael meet while shooting porn in LA. Gael is “involved” off-screen with another co-star, John, and Liam flees LA when he thinks he’s getting too involved with Gael, who he thinks is off limits.

In Utah, Liam works as a bartender full time and hooker part time. Gael eventually finds him there and works to convince him that he and John were never really a couple and that he and Liam should try to make a go of it.

Eventually the two work out an arrangement that suits them both, and the book ends on a definite HFN or a weak HEA.

This is not your typical porn star love story. (I’m laughing as I write that, but there are several of these stories out there, so I’m sure you know what I mean.) In most of the porn star books we find the MCs wrapping up their love story by quitting the industry and “turning a new leaf”. I really appreciated that neither Gael nor Liam ever feels that their profession is something to run away from. If not completely comfortable, it felt honest.

I also really liked that Liam’s character finds his own strength and coping mechanisms that are not revolving around what Gael does or having Gael “fix” him. All the way to the end Liam keeps his own bedroom and though the romantic in me would love for him to have healed more than that, I appreciated the realism of that. There are lots of relationships in the world, full of love, passion and intensity, that don’t conform to romantic ideals and this is one of them.

I thought it was a good look at life after an abusive childhood and as Liam says, it can’t ever be undone, but it doesn’t have to define who he is today.

There were things about the story that bugged me, some inconsistencies here and there, but for the most part I felt both authors did a tremendous job of portraying an imperfect love between imperfect characters in a way that was both sweet and realistic.

I highly recommend this book and give it a 4.5 of 5 stars.

Full Circle (Broken Pieces Book 2) by Riley Hart

full circleBlurb

Nothing in life is ever easy, and no one is more painfully aware of that than Josiah Evans, Mateo Sanchez, and Tristan Croft. They know what they want—each other—but with three people as broken as they are, all those pieces aren’t so easily mended.

Josiah is their glue. All he wants is to give his men what they need.

Mateo wants to absolve himself of his sins. To be worthy of love and to protect it.

Tristan must let go of his past, must learn how to need, and what it really means to take care of someone.

To keep the balance intact, they all have their roles to play. But what happens if the balance shifts? What happens when someone doesn’t play the right part? If one of them falters, they all feel the strain.

The only way to complete their full circle is for all their pieces, despite the curves and rough edges, to fit together perfectly. To do that, Josiah, Mateo, and Tristan must learn to get over the pasts that have defined who they are. And when an old enemy returns and threatens the foundation of their new life, decisions will be made, and boundaries will be tested that could change their lives forever.

We start the story with Teo and Josiah and Tristan working on Josiah’s coffee shop dream. They have all committed to working on a triad relationship, but…

Teo is still living in his crappy apartment, alone, to keep his PO happy.

Tristan is still distancing himself with mysterious phone calls and long nights in his office alone.

Josiah aches to keep his boys all together, but doesn’t DO confrontations and so doesn’t know what to do when things begin to unravel.

In this sequel there are no easy answers and the boys have to really work hard to stay together. They really are all so very broken, that it doesn’t magically go away.

Teo and Tristan’s mother bond, Tristan and Elliot (Josiah’s friend) bond, and in the end Ben (Tristan’s friend) proves to be a better friend than anyone could guess.

The love between the boys grows exponentially and the danger they face is serious. I loved how Riley Hart has continued their story, not giving them an easy path, but realistically working through their ever-so-many issues. When we get to the end, it is very satisfying even though the boys remain imperfect, but perfect together.

I highly recommend this book and give it a 4.5 of 5 hearts

Book Review Ask Again by BA Tortuga

ask againBlurb

Hearing that his ex-best friend is getting married might be the only thing that can lead Andy back to his wolf pack deep in the Colorado mountains. He’s a city wolf now, leaving behind the awkward, skinny teenage geek he was once upon a time. All he wants to do is see Levi one last time, and maybe lament what might have been between them if Levi had been brave enough to leave the pack with Andy all those years ago.

Levi has been a good soldier in his Alpha’s army, the second-in-command for several years. Seeing Andy again reminds Levi how he’s toed the line, and how all he’s gotten for it is a lonely life. He’s not sure why Andy came back, and at first he’s not even happy about it. Their need for each other runs deep and strong, though, and Levi has to wonder what he would do for Andy if the man would just ask him one more time.

Andy and Levi were mated(?) as teen-agers but something happened and Andy and his triplet brothers had to leave the pack. Levi was expected to remain behind to support the pack, and though it pained them, the mates parted ways.

When Andy’s meddling grandmother draws the two back into the same town again, the chemistry is right where they left it: smoldering hot!

Andy is a city wolf, and Levi a country one. Will they be able to find a way to be together or are they destined to be apart?

This was a fun little shifter story about second chance love. I didn’t always understand the motivations of Andy and Eli and I definitely didn’t understand how they could be mates and be separated for 10 years!

But… it was pretty fun and I appreciated the fairly low-angst, sexiness the two shared.

I recommend this to die-hard shifter fans and give it 3.5 of 5 stars

Speechless and The Gig by Kim Fielding

Travis Miller has a machining job, a cat named Elwood, and a pathetic love life. The one bright spot in his existence is the handsome guitar player he sometimes passes on his way home from work. But when he finally gathers the courage to speak to the man, Travis learns that former novelist Drew Clifton suffers from aphasia: Drew can understand everything Travis says, but he is unable to speak or write.

The two lonely men form a friendship that soon blossoms into romance. But communication is only one of their challenges-there’s also Travis’s inexperience with love and his precarious financial situation. If words are the bridge between two people, what will keep them together?

gigThe Gig

An accident in Drew Clifton’s past left the former novelist with aphasia, unable to communicate through either speech or writing. Through sheer strength of will, he built a quiet but lonely life for himself. But now he’s fallen in love with Travis Miller.

Travis has his own issues—a permanent eye injury and unemployment. But he’s determined to help Drew find ways to engage and succeed again in the wider world, and a guitar-playing gig at a local coffeehouse seems like a good start.

Dylan Warner and Chris Nock happen to be in the audience that evening, and they have a few niggling problems of their own. Perhaps a chance meeting will provide solutions that might benefit all of them.

I loved these books so much.  They rank among my all time favorite in the genre.  See my full review here:

Signs of Life (Resilient Love Book 2) by Melanie Hansen

A Resilient Love Story

Successful lawyer Jeremy Speer has it all—a loving husband, a beautiful home, and a cherished dream that’s about to become reality. He’s learned not to take happiness for granted, meeting the challenges of life and love head-on with unwavering commitment and fierce devotion. A series of tragic events leave Jeremy shattered, adrift on a sea of unimaginable pain. He’s able to piece his life back together, but instead of embracing it, he merely exists, using isolation and punishing physical exertion to keep the world at bay.

High school teacher Kai Daniels has a heart for at-risk kids—he was one himself, and a teenage brush with the law and some troubled years behind bars left him scarred inside and out. With courage, hard work, and the support of friends, he’s built a fulfilling life that leaves no time for a relationship.

An intense encounter with Kai at a gay club ignites a spark in Jeremy that he thought was extinguished forever, but he’s unwilling to destroy the fragile peace he’s managed to create, and he leaves Kai humiliated and disappointed. Things should have ended there, but a bizarre occurrence brings the two together in a way neither of them expected.

The Happily Ever After Mating Agency Presents: Kitten and Puppy (Book 4) by Jane Wallace-Knight

happily kitten puppyBlurb

There have always been conflicts between shifters of different species but these were supposed to be better times. Cheetah shifter Henry Dale was just sixteen when his entire coalition was burned alive. Having to stay with the neighboring wolf pack should have been terrifying for him, especially as one of them was responsible for setting the fire, but meeting the alpha’s son, Will Gray, made him feel safer than ever.

When the council came and took Henry away, deciding he would be better off with his own kind, he not only lost his best friend, but also his first love. On the night of his thirtieth birthday he decides on a whim to sign up to a mating agency, hoping that maybe he can find love again. He never thought he would see Will again but fate, it seems, has other plans.

Jane Wallace-Knight has a delightful series where paranormals with unique situations can join a mating service that helps them to find their mates. It’s not “Mate” with a capital M, as in fate, but rather that perfect someone to fill your life.

In this case its two men who knew each other as boys, each seeking the other (subconsciously or consciously). They had made a strong connection as teenagers but were kept apart by leaders who viewed inter-species mating as wrong.

Despite time, distance and a vengeful enemy, these two “opposites” manage to find love.

I just love this series! It’s sweet and sentimental with a dash of sexy and sometimes some intrigue.

The author gives us two perfect MCs who have to fight to find one another and then fight for the right to stay together. It’s a light, low angst, fun read that I recommend to all fans of shifter romance.
