A Series of Fates: Book Two

Sometimes you just have to embrace your fate.

Seth has a secret: he has a crush on the human next door. His brilliant plan to meet Jack, the man of his dreams who happens to be an animal trainer? Take wolf form and ask his best friend, Max, to take him next door for training. Seth is the only one surprised when things go horribly awry.

Still, can this shy wolf and a human meet their fate as mates?

Review

This book felt a lot more authentic to me than book one, which is unusual – usually the sequel in any series is the lesser – but not this time!

I thought it was hysterical – really funny at times – and pretty smexy as well. There is a lot of unresolved sexual tension and then some resolved chemistry as well!

The “misunderstanding” is resolved fairly quickly and all in all I really thought this fixed a lot of the “errors” I saw in book 1.

Review
I have to say, I enjoyed this second book in the series more than the first. Whether we’ve settled in more with the characters or just with a slightly more cutesy story line, I found it easier to connect with the MC’s and fall into their tale.
Seth’s social anxiety leads him to think it’s a good idea to have some interaction with his human mate whilst in wolf form so he can become more at ease. But of course, with a best friend like Max, from book 1, hilarity ensues.
The attraction between Seth and Jack is clear from the outset and both men are really sweet and adorable, you can’t help but want it all to work out for them.
I loved getting to hear from Max and Christian, our MC’s of book 1, as well as Zeus, the pack’s beta. Hopefully he’ll be getting his HEA soon.
Something else this book had in its favour was the settings of some of the scenes, especially down at the lake. Both on a busy, sunny day and a quiet starlit night, it sounds like a wonderful place to be.
This series has gotten better for me and I’m looking forward to book 3. This book can be read as a stand-alone but for full enjoyment I’d recommend reading the series in order. It gives more insight into past events and relationships that are talked about.

When Tendra arrives home after her bartending job in Mission city, she doesn’t expect to meet a vampire. Said vampire also claims to need her in order to save his vampirical clan, by marrying his brother, the future king. Athan’s clan only feed on consenting humans, without killing them- a notion their enemies do not share. They want Tendra dead before she makes it to Athan’s brother, to share the power in her blood that has been growing in her bloodline for ten generations, and to her future as his queen. Hard to believe as it is, Athan shows her proof she cannot ignore and whisks her into a dangerous journey through the secret underground vampire tunnels of his clan to their family compound outside Mission city. He must protect her at all costs for she is destined to his brother, to save his clan and the human world from being enslaved to the other vampire clans.
But, with every minute they spend together the pull Athens feels for Tendra gets stronger, and the close proximity they are forced to share is not helping him keep his desire for her in line with his duty to his brother, his king, and his role as the head of guard.

Review
For the last two years I have only been reading M/M romance, and if anyone can lure me out of it for some M/F it’s Megan Erickson! She is one of my favorite authors, with a geeky infused writing style I adore! This book was a pleasant surprise, much like her M/M Shifter books: The Silver Tip Pack series (a genre I Never liked for its cliché-ness). I think Megan’s greatest talent is taking a cliché genre and writing a book that while it has many of the characteristics to make it a cliché is still refreshing and enjoyable. Not every book is a unique masterpiece, but having the ability to read a story in a plotline that have been so thoroughly chewed and re-chewed that I, as a reader well versed in this genre to the point I was sick of Twilight wannabees, loved the book is amazing to me. I credit it to the humor, banter between characters, fluidity of the plot and putting little twists throughout the story.

I love Tendra’s personality, she is independent while still being dependent on Athan for her survival, and is realistic in that sense but she can and will protect herself when needed. Tendra is a badass heroine that does not spend days mourning what she lost while still understanding she is in a new situation and learning to deal with it. Athan is both though and soft, with a gentleness and emotional depth I credit to Megan’s M/M writing. The fast pace the story starts out at does not mean the characters get it on within the first chapter, another strong point to me. I feel like they really see each other before sex gets thrown in the mix. The fantasy world setting is interesting and believable and well rounded.
If you love the supernatural romance genre, vampires and great characters you should definitely read this book, it is everything Twilight and its look a likes wanted to be and are not with a splash of humor and sass.

Hounds of the Hunt: Book 1

NEXT BOOK: Pyro’s Accidental Shooting

Long nights hunting supernatural beings means little time for love in Adze’s life. He and his pack mates are what protects Melbourne, and Australia, from the things that go bump in the night—very real spirits and demons who prey on humans.

Every day Archie’s life is consumed by work as he desperately tries to pay back his student debt and a loan a boyfriend took out in his name. Tired and alone, he dreams of a future with someone to love and hold him through the night.

One fateful encounter with a nephilim gone bad changes both their worlds forever. Now Adze just has to convince his heart mate he didn’t actually kidnap him.

Please note: Archie’s Accidental Kidnapping has undergone extensive edits and rewrites since Toni is gearing up to continue the series. In addition, the series has been renamed so as not to confuse it with another.

The plot has changed, the world is different, 41,000 words were added, BUT the one thing that hasn’t changed is Archie and Adze.

Review
(Book previously reviewed here.)

This is a re-print and re-edited (longer) version of the story published years earlier.

It’s really cute, with some sweet moments as well as a lot of humor

I enjoyed the world Toni gives us with Hellhounds on patrol and crazy nephilim going after humans.

If you’re in the mood to laugh – give this a go!

Audio

Joel Leslie takes this fun and steamy story to the next level and gives it more weight than I’d even thought possible.  It’s still a hoot and tons of fun, but he gives it a bit more polish than even the original had.

Time to get Paranormal: Chasing Destiny (Silver Tip Pack book 2) By Megan Erickson

Blurb
Bay has had his fair share of hardships, as brother to the Alpha of the Silver Tip Pack. He almost died when a usurper took the opportunity the alpha was away on a rescue mission to try and take over. Upon his brother’s return he discovers the one person he cannot forget, his best friend Nash, was still alive all these years after he disappeared when they were boys. The news is as unsettling as the fact Nash has been lost again, with no hope of returning, sacrificing his life to buy Dare and his team time to get back to safety when the Noweres attacked.

Now Bay is restless, choosing to go outside the safety of their compound for Reese’s long though dead tribe. New intel says there are possible survivors there and Dare. As alpha, must see if they can be allied with, for the sake of his mate. Bay expects to find some lost wolves barely hanging on and not the small, yet strong, community who is more that capable to defend itself. And he was not expecting to find Nash again, after mourning him twice and giving up any shred of hope, the one person he has always loved. But the years Nash was away have damaged his body and soul, and unlocking the secrets of his past might lead to an enemy much worse than the Undead Noweres and their single minded need to kill.

Review
This was a book I was anxiously anticipating after book one, and Nash and Bay’s story was as thrilling and emotional as it was hot. I loved the expansion of the world Megan created with the addition of Reese’s tribe and their leader Pace. I also adored how intricately she wrote Nash’s back story, it’s raw and sad but also adds a whole new dimension and a ruthless enemy for our group of heroes. We also get a look as how they live in this dystopian future after all the humans died in the virus and the Noweres appeared.
Bay and Nash share an unbreakable bond, one that time and pain could not erode, and the Friends-to-Lovers theme is strong in this book. The added bonus of the shifter dynamics, the pack bond between them makes their love almost visceral. Nash has been found and is slowly getting his strength back, but the past scars he carries are deep and he keeps pushing Bay away. Bay, the fun loving optimist that he is, doesn’t let him get too far despite his attempts of running away. They are fun to read about with an air of longing in every touch and moment between them, and they are smoldering hot together.
When Nash’s fate in those lost years is revealed Dare has to reevaluate the world he lives in and what he thought to be facts. Nash is not the only one holding secrets, Pace has some of his own and in order to survive they have to work together and trust each other, not an easy feat when testosterone and egos are at play. I loved them so much, especially when the horrors of Nash’s live are discovered. You just feel so much for him, for all of them really- thrust in a cruel violent future fighting against bloodthirsty monsters and evil beyond human comprehension.
This book is almost like a detective story, were you gather tidbits of information and try to put the puzzle pieces together. I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series, an MMF according to Megan’s FB group post and more of this world.

The last thing Sebastian Zeller wants is to be pack Alpha. But when the pack leader, his uncle Ron, is attacked, he has no choice but to leave his beloved Colorado mountains and fulfill his duty as Ron’s heir—at least until his uncle recovers. In the meantime, he intends to lure the attacker out… and make them pay.

When Ron gets wind of Sebastian’s plan to catch the attacker, he doesn’t like the idea of risking his heir. That’s where Jaxon Reedis comes in—he’ll balance protecting the dark and sexy werewolf with pretending to be his personal assistant. He’s walking a fine line that requires all his foxy wit and craftiness… and that’s on top of the inescapable feeling that he and Sebastian are meant for each other. When the attacker returns, will they be able to maintain their deepening bond when danger threatens to tear down everything they’re building

Review
This is the second book in Julia Talbot’s Nose to Tail Inc series. It is completely a stand-alone book, although it’s worth reading (or listening) to the first book. Both are entertaining shifter books in completely different ways. Sebastian and his best friend Alan are putting themselves in danger looking for Ron’s attackers. Jaxon works for Nose to Tail inc and is hired to protect Sebastian, acting as Sebastian’s assistant as his cover. I never thought a wolf and fox would fit together so perfectly. Sebastian and Jaxon’s outlook and personalities work well together because Sebastian just wants to work on his art and find the people responsible for attacking Ron. Whilst Jaxon is a speedy fox, always organised with his finger on the button sorting Sebastian out. At the same time he is monitoring Sebastian’s movements to keep him safe. There are two threads to this story the mystery over who attacked Ron, also the subsequent threat to Sebastian for pursuing it, and the bubbling building romance between Sebastian and Jaxon. Add to the pot Ron’s determination to name Sebastian the next Alpha and you have an enjoyable story.

Joseph Morgan‘s has a good tone and speed with his narration. He provides a good portrayal of Jaxon as a fox shifter with a slight edge to his voice as if he was ready to leap into action at a moments notice. Whilst his portrayal of Sebastian’s character added to the frustrated artist vibe but also someone who was fun to be with.

Enhanced World: Book Three
Gael Peterson has spent years hiding behind the enhanced abilities he wears like a mask, even though he is an important, confident member of the FBI’s exclusive H.E.R.O. team. The hurt and betrayal of his mom’s abandonment and his father’s fists are secrets buried deep beneath the ugly scars on his face, and he doesn’t trust Jake, his new regular human partner, with any of them. In a world where those with special abilities like Gael’s are regarded as freaks and monsters, it won’t be easy for him to rely on Jake to have his back, especially when the abilities of a vulnerable nonspeaking enhanced child make that child a murder suspect.
Tempers rise and loyalties are challenged, and when the serial killer targeting the enhanced finally sets his sights on Gael, not only will Gael have to trust Jake with his secrets, he might have to trust him to save his life.

Review

(Book reviewed here previously)

This is the third book the Enhanced series and I think it’s best read as a series. You could probably figure things out, but you’d be missing an awful lot.

If you’ve read the first books, you have an idea of what the Enhanced are and how they and the humans have historically interacted. Jake and Gael have some similar concerns as they pair up. Just as Finn and Talon had to learn to work together so do they. (I was a big Gael fan in book 1 and he did not disappoint here!)

The story is a lovely mix of Gael and Jake learning to work together and love one another as well continued action as we meet more bad guys.

I think fans of the series will love this and love Jake and Gael as a couple and if you’re new to the series, you should probably start with book 1.

Highly recommended!

Jo my gahd!  I love Jake’s voice!  I make no bones that I’m a big Nick Russo fan, and I’ve always enjoyed Victoria Sue’s books, and I’ve previously enjoyed this series narrated by Nick – a lot! – But…. I thought Jake’s particular character was fantastic in a way that really made him stand out.

Nick is only getting better with all his narrations and I’m so glad to see him whenever I do as narrator, because I know I’ll enjoy the book and that he will (most likely) improve my enjoyment of the book more than just reading it.

This is a tough story – lots of people/characters/voices and Nick nails it!

Stealing his heart.

As a thief and a warlock, Noah survives by using his wit and charm to prey on the privileged. His dangerous criminal boss wants an enchanted dagger belonging to a family of wealthy mages, including their pampered—but handsome—son, Ben. Failing to complete the job will be hazardous to Noah’s survival.

Noah bumps into Ben at a lavish party, and as soon as they meet, the connection’s undeniable, and it goes much further than ordinary attraction. Their bond reaches into their souls, entwining and changing their magic.

Which Noah thinks he can use to get to the dagger. After all, he isn’t sure this soul bond Ben seems so obsessed with is even real.

He also doesn’t count on being caught red-handed…. Or falling in love.

Review

The magic part of this story was wonderful and very satisfying. I loved how the author depicted the “entwining” and how powerful they become when they work together.

I didn’t feel their personal connection as strongly and I wasn’t always sure of the “rules” in this “world”.

I think – if this becomes a series – more information on how things work and spending more time with the emotional connection would help me warm to the series more.

It was still a lot of fun and I recommend it to fans of soul mates and magic!

Looking for something fun? Like shifters? Tired of wolf shifters? Like some hot smexy times? This is for you!

This is a great new series with a slightly different take on the shifter theme but with all the good stuff you want in a shifter romance.

We’ve got fated mates, an evil mage and some unfinished business leading us to the next book.

I urge you to ignore the not-so-great cover and give this a shot!

Review

This is a fun and funny paranormal series centered around hell-hounds who are on earth to fight supernaturals who break the law.

I enjoyed book 1 quite a bit (https://openskyebookreviews.com/archies-accidental-kidnapping-hounds-of-the-hunt-1-by-toni-griffin/) and this was good as well, though the sex was maybe a bit too much and detracted from the sweet/cute romance.

Instead their time is taken up trying to work out which Chieftains they can count on and who is attempting to undermine them at every turn.
When plots and betrayals run deep within the heart of the capital, who will succeed and who will pay the ultimate price?

Review
And the storyline continues!

With each of the previous books we have seen the political posturing of all the groups and in this story it all centers around the King , the Capital and the Avanti. Some questions are answered and more are asked. And while all of this is going on another of the Avanti finds the love of his life.

King Kastain and Avanti leader Dax are both strong personalities yet when they get the chance to be alone they really are both soft and caring men. With all the political intrigue weaved through the story there is also comic relief and also truly hot sex scenes.

Many questions are answered but nothing is truly solved. The story does end in a HEA for the couple, but those of us who are following series are waiting impatiently for the next book and the next set of clues to the ongoing storyline.
