Whoever said blood was thicker than water never stood in a pool of it.

Retiring from stealing priceless treasures seemed like a surefire way for Rook Stevens to stay on the right side of the law. The only cop in his life should have been his probably-boyfriend, Los Angeles Detective Dante Montoya, but that’s not how life—his life—is turning out. Instead, Rook ends up not only standing in a puddle of his cousin Harold’s blood but also being accused of Harold’s murder…and sleeping with Harold’s wife.

For Dante, loving the former thief means his once-normal life is now a sea of chaos, especially since Rook seems incapable of staying out of trouble—or keeping trouble from following him home. When Rook is tagged as a murder suspect by a narrow-focused West L.A. detective, Dante steps in to pull his lover out of the quagmire Rook’s landed in.

When the complicated investigation twists around on them, the dead begin to stack up, forcing the lovers to work together. Time isn’t on their side, and if they don’t find the killer before another murder, Dante will be visiting Rook in his prison cell—or at his grave.

Review

This is a hard one for me to review because there are things that I really love about it and some things that just aren’t my particular taste – I won’t say “not good” because they are good – just not my thing.

Things that I love: I love the characters Rhys has given us and how they’ve grown in these books. Rook is a GREAT character and I absolutely love the juxtaposition of the thief with the cop. In the beginning when he’s describing his feelings as he breaks and enters the house – superb!

I love seeing the bits and pieces from Rhys’ other works scattered throughout the story. And I love the super sweet ending.

Things that I don’t “love” – I’m not a mystery fan so if it wasn’t for Rhys being the author I’d probably skip books like these where the mystery plays such a vital role.

I’m on the fence with this: the descriptions. On the one hand I’m always amazed at how beautiful Rhys’ writing is. She can literally describe something so well you can feel and smell it! But sometimes the descriptions get really bulky and slow down the pace of the story in places that might be better served to move at a quicker pace. I think this is very much personal opinion – but there you have it.

All in all this was a wonderful addition to the series and I really look forward to hearing this in audio format soon (I hope!)!

Highly recommended to fans of the author/series, fans of opposite attract romances, fans of mystery/crime romances and fans of romances with humor.

History isn’t always what it seems….
With the battle of Egypt behind them, Alec and Cronin are enjoying the thrill of new love. Though fate doesn’t wait long before throwing them back into the world of weird.
They know Alec’s blood is special, though its true purpose still eludes them. And given Alec’s inability to be changed into a vampire, Cronin is free to drink from him at will. But the ramifications of drinking such powerful blood starts a ripple effect.
With the help of Jorge, a disturbing vampire-child with the gift of foresight, Alec and Cronin face a new kind of war. This time their investigations lead them to the borders of China and Mongolia – but it’s not what lies in the pits beneath that worries Alec.
It’s the creator behind it all.
In the underground depths of China, amid a war with the Terracotta Army, they will find out just what the Key is – and what Alec means to the vampire world.

Review

(Book reviewed here previously: http://kimichanexperience.com/cronins-key-2-by-nr-walker/)

Wow – oh wow! Alec is back and he and Cronin are so – so – so hot together!
Alec and Cronin face Genghis Kahn and the Terracotta Army as well as some others… to be named later… for the answers they need to save the world as well as to save Alec’s eternity.
Something strange is going on in Alec’s physiology that makes him and Cronin insatiable for each other. They can’t bear to be separated for even a moment. They need one another desperately and succumbing to their need has an unpredictable and sometimes terrifying result.
They must answer riddles and dig deep to find the truth that will set them free, but once they do – WOW – is it ever an amazing ride.
I really, really, really loved this sequel to Cronin’s Key. It was very satisfying and action packed as well as amazingly touching and sweet.
There was a lot of hot smexy times, though many were only hinted at. What I really loved was the desperate need and devotion the two shared. It was very passionate and all consuming and really drove you to keep turning the page to seek the solution along beside Alec, Cronin and the team they assembled.
I loved the new powers we see in the other vampires as well as the crazy interesting Jorge and all he has to “show” Alec about his future.
This was a terrific sequel and in my opinion an even better book than the first. I highly recommend it and the series … well and the author!

Audio

Listening to this story just brings all the emotions out – even stronger than reading it does. I am in awe of Joel’s ability to keep all those people and their unique accents straight! He does an absolutely stunning job with this series. I do giggle just at hearing Eiji’s accent – it fits so well!

Highly Recommended!

Sequel to Thick & Thin
THIRDS: Book Nine
THIRDS Team Leader Sebastian Hobbs and Chief Medical Examiner Hudson Colbourn are as much in love now as they were nearly seven years ago when a tragic event on the job destroyed their relationship. The two drift together only to be pulled apart time and time again. When Hudson draws the interest of dangerous enemies, both within and outside the organization, Seb wants nothing more than to protect the man who still means everything to him.
As life-and-death events, an uncertain future, and startling truths draw Hudson and Seb to each other yet again, they must make a choice: trust their love and take strength from what they share, or lose what matters most… for good this time.

Review

I think this has become my favorite book in the series. I just liked how Seb and Hudson couldn’t be together but couldn’t move on. Both men knew that no one else would be what they had with each other but with so many issues to deal with they just seemed to dance around each other.
The story has several threads running through it, all involving Seb and/or Hudson, with Hudson seeming to have the most focus on him. Hudson’s relationship with his coworker Nina, then there is Hudson’s relationship with Seb’s parents. Hudson trying to date someone else, and much more. When Seb and Hudson finally get together their time in bed is sweet, hot and explosive.

The story grabs you from the start and keeps you engrossed and reading to the last page, as you want to see what happens next. A surprise revelation will have all the loyal followers of the series waiting impatiently for the next book to come out to see where the story goes from here.

Hospital porter Aaron Miller isn’t expecting a very exciting birthday. He and his doctor boyfriend, Blake Colville, are working opposite shifts, leaving Aaron to go home to an empty house and the prospect of another shift the following day. Just as he’s leaving work, however, an unexpected sexy encounter in a supply cupboard leaves him feeling in a much more celebratory mood. And an impending dirty weekend away with Blake just puts the icing on the non-existent cake. But who needs cake when you’re dating a dominant doctor?

Review

A real sexy short break.
What a little gem of a story. Blake and Aaron play in the bedroom rather than 24/7, so this glimpse into their busy life was perfect. Aaron wasn’t really expecting to celebrate his birthday their working schedules made it difficult to be together, so being pulled into a cupboard by his Doctor boyfriend Blake started the story off in the perfect way. I loved how Lucy Felthouse conveyed the depth of their relationship so quickly at the start and established the nature of their D/S relationship as well. The games they played on their weekend away were hot and fun.

I’ve never listened anything narrated by Peter Revel-Walsh before. I admit his accent took me awhile to settle into but once I had he was perfect for these two British lads. My view of the narration is that the story was read me rather than performed, which was fine. I had no difficulty identifying who was speaking in this style and I think it suited the story. Overall I think it’s perfect if you want to listen to a short steamy feel good story.

Investment manager and always-in-control Richard Marshall has just landed a historic estate he’s waited years to acquire. Gone a lot for his work, he’s seriously craving his men. Yet it’s more than just the sex he’s missing. Emotionally-traumatized Luke is still dealing with the aftereffects of his father’s attempt to kill him, and Matthew’s trying to find his way as part of a menage relationship.

When Luke and Matthew come clean with Richard about what they’ve been feeling, he knows there’s only one way to solve all his problems: keep them close by accepting their help to investigate why someone wants to destroy the mansion he’s trying to save. When it becomes clear he’s put his family in danger, Richard has to choose between giving up control and pushing away the men he loves right when they’ve started to heal and have rekindled the explosive chemistry that brought them all together.

A menage relationship is hard enough. Add in danger, intrigue, a haunted mansion, and three sexually frustrated men, and it’s not a typical love story. It’s much more.

Review

This was a nice sequel to a great ménage story. I didn’t love it, as there seemed to be more angst than necessary. These guys already have so much going against them, simply working through that would be enough challenge for any relationship, but there is even more angst awaiting our trio.

Just as with book 1, there is a lot of sex and a lot of drama, and a pretty good resolution by the end.

While I enjoyed this, it doesn’t come near to my appreciation for book 1.

Recommended for fans of book 1, with caution.

Blurb:

In a matter of days, Dex has been kidnapped, tortured, killed, revived, become half Therian, offered the chance to become a spy, and accepted a proposal to marry his jaguar Therian boyfriend, Sloane Brodie. It’s been a lot to take in, and although Dex is still trying to wrap his head around everything that’s happened, he knows he has to move forward.

After the events of Smoke & Mirrors, Dex and Sloane find themselves in one of the most frightening situations of all: revealing the truth to their Destructive Delta family. When the dust settles, nothing will ever be the same, and it’s up to Dex to prove that in the face of change, the one thing that will always remain the same is family.

Review:
This book seemed like a transition book. Dex becoming a hybrid, a few action scenes, Wolf showing back up to create havoc and Dex and Sloan telling the team all of the changes that have come about and where they go from there. There is also hints to something up with Dr Hudson

There just wasn’t the intensity of the last couple of books. We are given a run down on how the team will be working in the future. We get to see some of Dex’s new enhancements. And we still don’t trust Lt Sparks. For a book that is less than half the pages of the previous book it’s a short quick read.

The Long and Winding Road (Bear, Otter, and the Kid #4) by T.J. Klune

release day review

Dreamspinner Presents

Blurb
Family is not always defined by blood. It’s defined by those who make us whole—those who make us who we are.

And here, at the end, Bear and Otter will be tested like they’ve never been before.

There’s a knock at the door from a little girl who has nowhere else to go.

There’s a phone ringing, bringing news they do not expect.

There’s a brother returning home after learning how to stand on his own.

As these moments converge, all of their lives will change forever.

Beginning in Bear, Otter, and the Kid, and continuing in Who We Are and The Art of Breathing, TJ Klune has told a saga of family and brotherhood, of love and sacrifice. In this final chapter, the events of the past pave the long and winding road toward a future no one could have imagined.

Review

So TJ Klune says this is it – the final installment of BOATK. I think that’s good. This was a really solid and definite ending to the story – we’d been left with a pretty big cliff hanger at the end of TAOB and it was great seeing just exactly how that whole thing panned out.

On the one hand I was a bit disappointed in was the fact that we didn’t see more of Dom and Ty. (This story is definitely all about Otter and Bear – but I’m also really glad, too. I love these guys a lot and having the final story split between the two couples would have left the story feeling less solid.) But – while I was sad that we never saw more about Ty and Dom –for me their story never felt quite resolved –we do get enough glimpses of them here to trust in their HEA.

It was great seeing some of the “real life” couple stuff thrown in here for our guys to deal with. Sequels can be hard in that sense. After the ILYs there’s still a boat load of hard work to make a relationship work – add in children and that’s magnified by a thousand. I was glad to see that any “angst” in this story was put to rest quickly but that our couples do have real problems and have to work through them not have them magically disappear.

I LOVED the new characters we meet – Megan and her partner are hysterical, as is Izzy (and some others who I won’t exactly mention but who get showcased at the end!)

Creed cracked me up! Man, I couldn’t live with that guy, and I was glad to see Anna had to work at it, too – but he is SO FUNNY! I love that his kid is his replica and “the eyes in the back of his head” bit never got tiring! I literally laughed out loud each time Creed shouted at his son to stop whatever nerve-wracking thing he was doing.

This is going to be absolutely FABULOUS in audio format. There is SO much comedic fodder – but also some really touching emotional scenes that are bound to bring tears to your eyes.

If you’re a fan of the series you’re going to be like me and stay up reading this until 3 am because you won’t be able to put it down.

Highly recommended – both happy and sad to see this series ending.
