When Griffin’s past collides with his present, will it cost the lives of everyone he loves?

Between the threat of a world-ending invasion from the Outside and unwelcome revelations about his own nature, Percival Endicott Whyborne is under a great deal of strain. His husband, Griffin Flaherty, wants to help—but how can he, when Whyborne won’t tell him what’s wrong?

When a man from Griffin’s past murders a sorcerer, the situation grows even more dire. Once a simple farmer from Griffin’s hometown of Fallow, the assassin now bears a terrifying magical corruption, one whose nature even Whyborne can’t explain.

To keep Griffin’s estranged mother safe, they must travel to a dying town in Kansas. But as drought withers the crops of Fallow, a sinister cult sinks its roots deep into the arid soil. And if the cult’s foul harvest isn’t stopped in time, Fallow will be only the first city to fall.

Fallow is the eighth book in the Whyborne & Griffin series, where magic, mystery, and m/m romance collide with Victorian era America.

Review

The fist time I read this, this was my initial reaction:

“I really need to create a new shelf that is just called AWESOME! And every book in this series will be on it! Write quicker Ms. Hawke, I need the next installment yesterday!”

I still feel this way, about the entire series. That being said, this one is not my favourite book, but it still holds all the ingredients for a great Whyborne and Griffin story and we get a lot of interesting back story on Griffin and his family as we once again uproot the both couples and re-plant them in Griffin’s home town of Fallow.

It is not any authors that can manage to be on book 8 of a series and still be going so incredibly strong as Ms. Hawk is. There has not been a single dud between the 8 books and every story leaves you wanting the next book. Quite a feat!

Warmly recommended, just as any other book in the series, but read them in order! You need the whole thing to get the big picture!

After becoming possessed by the vampire spirit Gray, telekinetic Caleb Jansen thought his situation couldn’t get any worse. But that was before Graham Forsyth, head of SPECTR’s sinister Research Division, took him into custody.

Forsyth claims he can exorcise Gray before the forty-day time limit runs out. But once at RD, Caleb and Gray find themselves ensnared in a web of lies. What is the truth behind the tests Forsyth is performing on them? What does the agency really plan to do with Gray? And most worrisome of all, why does Gray sense demons within the walls of RD’s compound?

Caleb’s boyfriend, SPECTR agent John Starkweather, has suspicions of his own. With the help of his friend Sean and a shadowy organization known only by their symbol of a moth, John intends to save Caleb and Gray at any cost.

But when divided loyalties threaten his last chance at exorcism, Caleb discovers love may come at a price higher than he’d ever imagined.

Review

OMG out of the frying pan into the fire!

Because Caleb/Grey became known to the public after saving John’s ex-boyfriend in the previous book, General Forsyth has the perfect opportunity to claim that they needed to imprison them. And Caleb wants to believe that R & D will have the capabilities to exorcise before time runs out.

Jordan L Hawk ramps up the intrigue, introducing us to the Vigilant, showing us glimpses of what General Forsyth has planned, and a lot of revelations and running around. Much of the story is spent building up to the 6th and final book. It’s still a page turner and you learn a lot of the why and how of the story.

Between his father’s sudden—and rather suspicious—generosity, and his own rash promise to help Christine plan her wedding, Percival Endicott Whyborne has quite enough to worry about. But when the donation of a mysterious codex to the Ladysmith Museum draws the attention of a murderous cult, Whyborne finds himself in a race against time to unlock its secrets first.

Griffin has a case of his own: the disappearance of an historic map, which quickly escalates to murder. Someone is sacrificing men in dark rituals—and all the clues lead back to the museum.

With their friends Christine and Iskander, Whyborne and Griffin must discover the cult’s true goal before it’s too late. For dark forces are afoot at the very heart of the museum, and they want more than Whyborne’s codex.

They want his life.

Review
This one is my favourite! I know I feel this way about every book in this series, but that is only because they keep getting better! Even if you wouldn’t think it possible!

I am in awe of Ms. Hawke and in desperate love with Julian G. Simmons narration of her work. I cannot read these books. I need Julian to read them to me. And he will, over and over and over again. This series is a keeper and one for the ‘Continuos re-reads’ shelf!

Maelstrom draws on every other book in the series and neatly ties up ends you didn’t even realise were lose! Whilst still leaving enough room for desperate fangirls like me to hope and wish for more. It was awesome – and as always Mr. Simmons was amazing. He IS Whyborne.

This book was so intense that you just could not stop reading. And that ending! Oh lordy! Talk about a cliffhanger in the overall story arc! Cannot wait for the continuation of this plot!

If you haven’t already read this amazing series, you have to drop everything and go get it. And get the audio too while you are at it, it adds magnificently to the experience, so please, let Mr. Simmons read it to you.

Go get it! Now! You will not be sorry.

When a supernatural killer is implicated in a string of cannibalistic murders, federal exorcist John Starkweather must track the demon down with the help of his live-in lover, Caleb Jansen. Caleb is possessed by Gray, a vampire spirit who is a natural demon hunter.

Caleb’s desire to find the killer is tempered by the knowledge his own time is running out. If John can’t successfully figure out how to exorcise Gray before forty days are up, the possession becomes permanent.

When John’s ex shows up, looking for a place to stay while visiting the city on business, tensions mount even higher. Lines are drawn and Caleb learns some decisions, once made, can never be changed.

Review

Well Jordan L Hawk has definitely hooked me in on her storyline! I picked this story up and read through it in one sitting.

We have the concern as to whether Grey can be exorcized, while all of us readers don’t want that to happen. There is the ex-boyfriend of John showing up, and Shawn telling Caleb he should step out of the picture. And while all of this is going on there is General Forsyth from R & D nosing around.

We meet a new demon, with little hints running through the story. The sex scenes keep getting hotter and hotter……. And we are left with a cliffhanger!

Sorcerer Percival Endicott Whyborne and his husband Griffin Flaherty have enjoyed an unprecedented stretch of peace and quiet. Unfortunately, the calm is shattered by the arrival of a package from Griffin’s brother Jack, who has uncovered a strange artifact while digging for gold in Alaska. The discovery of a previously unknown civilization could revive the career of their friend Dr. Christine Putnam—or it might kill them all, if the hints of dark sorcery surrounding the find are true.

With Christine and her fiancé Iskander, Whyborne and Griffin must journey to the farthest reaches of the arctic to stop an ancient evil from claiming the life of Griffin’s brother. But in the rough mining camp of Hoarfrost, secrets fly as thickly as the snow, and Whyborne isn’t the only sorcerer drawn by the rumors of magic. Amidst a wilderness of ice and stone, Griffin must either face his greatest fear—or lose everyone he loves.

Review
Hoarfrost once again moves Whyborne out of Widdershins, as he and Griffin – along with Christine and Iskander – goes on a rescue mission for Griffins long lost older brother in Alaska. In this book we also gets Griffin’s point of view, which is a very nice touch. In fact Griffin is the main focal point in the plot line of this book. Almost all of the books in the series revolve around the family you love, siblings and parents, the family you are born with and the one you choose and this one certainly does too.

As always Jordan L. Hawk manages to tie bows on strings from ealier books, strings you didn’t even knew were lose, she manages to tie up nicely. I am in awe of this woman! Six books into the series and it is not only keeping up the awesomeness, she has also managed to not drop a single ball or leave a single plot hole on her way.

Great book, great series!

The End Street Detective Agency #6

Bob is lost in grief, Sam is fighting for his life, and there is no middle ground. Can their love survive?

Bob is grieving over his brother’s sacrifice. Guilt-ridden and devastated, he buries himself in vampire mourning and pulls away from Sam.

Magic tears Sam from the vampire castle and he has to face new adversaries alone, when all he wants is Bob at his side.

Ettore is in the Aset Ka waiting room, next in line for the ceremony for his soul to be torn from his body. Aset Ka has other plans, and Ettore finds himself reunited with a lost love and fighting alongside his brother.

A forgotten past binds Theodore ‘Teddy’ McCurray Constantine III to Ettore, and with the curse tied to Ettore broken by his death, Teddy’s past returns to him with a vengeance.

A royal family in denial, a battle between gods, and long forgotten love leaves no time for Sam and Bob to take a breath. Is it too late to save the supernatural world

Review
The Case of the Guilty Ghost is the last in the End Street Detective Agency series. It’s a lovely paranormal world in which Sam slowly comes to terms with having magical powers and meets his mate Bob the Vampire. There is a wonderful array of creatures in this series, a gargoyle called Hal, dragon shifters, a cat familiar called Smudge and a moody ghost called Teddy. Although each story is an individual case you do need to read all the stories to follow the thread Sam’s building power and the strengthening of his relationship with Bob.

This is mainly Teddy’s story. He turns out to be Ettore (Bob’s brother) lost love who was killed by the evil younger brother. Ettore sacrifices himself for Bob at the end of book 5 and in this book the Vampire god Aset Ka sends Ettore’s soul back to carry out a task. Circumstances bring Ettore and Teddy back together but for how long? There is a lot going on in this finale, an evil brother, lovers reunited, vampire politics, kidnapping and the fulfilment of a prophecy. I liked the use of dry humour in the story to lighten the mood. A very enjoyable paranormal series with added mystery and lovely characters.

Life is perfect for Richard and Dean. Richard is a wealthy and successful businessman who also owns a BDSM club, and Dean is a best-selling author and sub to Richard. They’re young, happy, and in love. The future is bright….

Until tragedy strikes and an accident claims Dean’s beloved sister. Dean finds himself the guardian of a three-month-old infant, and soon he’s trading in his leather fetish gear for diapers and drool bibs. But little Emily is all that remains of his family, so how can he abandon her?

It’s not what Richard signed up for. As much as he tries to be supportive, he never wanted kids and misses having his partner to himself. Suddenly the life he imagined for them is gone, and he’s not sure their relationship can survive the upheaval. But fate isn’t through with Dean, and when misfortune strikes again, will he be able to turn to the man he loves? A final crisis will determine if they can pull together as a family or must face facts and part ways

Review
It’s been a long time since I’ve stayed up until the early hours of the morning reading a book, but this one had me hooked. I must stress that if BDSM books are not your thing do not read this book. The Master/Sub relationship between Richard and Dean is made very clear from page one. Richard is a very strong character and is particularly self centred. He is a hardcore business man who stands for no nonsense. Not very likeable in the beginning but as the story progresses my opinion of him changes. Which I suppose shows skilful writing. I was taken on a journey with this family through a very turbulent time in their lives. Now this is the part where my feelings about the book are a bit muddled. I loved the building of tension as the very realistic issues hit this couple. I could relate to Richard’s resentment of baby Emily, in as much as the way an only child resents a new sibling. He is used to being Dean’s sole focus. Dean on the other hand seemed too willing to forgive. He doesn’t cope well with conflict but I can’t decide if he’s a pushover or not. He is a Sub that needs his Master’s protection and guidance. Which makes it even more reprehensible when Richard puts him in the position where he has to choose between his Master or his Niece.
I liked the way the story evolves. But here is my quandary. I mutter about stories that go around the houses to solve a situation that just takes straight talking and here I am when a story does just that thinking, well that was too easy!
The Master/Sub scenes are well written and quite evocative.
They clearly set the tone of their relationship and this comes across not only in the playroom scenes but also the 24/7 routines aspect of the relationship.
The story covers just over a year in Richard and Dean’s relationship and they do have a rollercoaster of a year but they do get a happy ever after. I will definitely be looking out for the next book in the series.

Next book: Eater of Lives

When an incubus murders the powerful ally of an anti-paranormal senator, it’s up to hotshot Federal agent John Starkweather to catch the demon before it can kill again. Fortunately, he has backup, in the form of his boyfriend Caleb, a telekinetic possessed by the vampire spirit Gray.

As the political pressure mounts and bodies pile up, John discovers an old enemy protecting the incubus: the Fist of God, a group that believes all paranormals are evil. But why would the Fist work with a demon? And why would they let it kill one of their own allies?

John and Caleb need to find out fast. Because the incubus lurks at the intersection of love and longing, and it’s willing to turn their deepest desires against them.

Review

First let me say that in each book of this series there is a definite story, a mystery to solve. Then there is the ongoing story of John, Caleb and Grey. Jordon Hawke has woven them together so well, you just want to keep turning the pages to see where they end in each book.

John gets trapped by The incubus and as we all know an incubus will draw on your deepest desires to seduce you and we see that John has desired Grey. This is just a small hint of things to come, but it makes us all wonder.

We hear again that a possessed person will say anything to make you believe they are okay and in control, all of this in reference to how Caleb is dealing with being possessed by Grey.

We have the great give and take as Caleb and Grey talk to each other, and we see Grey developing into a more opinionated personality.

Caleb Jansen’s old life is in ruins after being possessed by the vampire spirit Gray. Now all Caleb wants is for Gray to be exorcised so he can adjust to living as a registered paranormal. Instead, District Chief Kaniyar of SPECTR offers him a new choice: be locked away for public safety, or come work for the very agency he’s spent years trying to avoid. The only good thing to come from Caleb’s possession is his relationship with federal exorcist John Starkweather, but even that seems doomed to end before it can really begin.

John’s newest case is a nightmare: someone is summoning demons and forcing them to possess women and boys snatched from the streets of Charleston. If his team can’t find the summoner soon enough, the possessions will become permanent, transforming the victims into ghouls. To make matters worse, he barely prevents Gray from feeding on their only lead.

Can John shield his heart from Caleb, who only seems interested in a temporary hook-up? Can Caleb keep Gray under control while they hunt for the summoner? Or will the cost of solving the case be higher than any of them could have guessed?

Because the master of ghouls has set his sights on a new target: Gray.

Review:

This story is picked up a few days after the conclusion of the first book, with Caleb being asked to now help John and Spectr hunt NHE’s, and as much as Caleb doesn’t want to help the very organization that he hates, he doesn’t want to be locked up until he can get Grey exorcised.

We also get to hear Caleb and Grey as they talk to each other inside of Caleb’s head. There are some pretty funny conversations. Caleb and John’s personal relationship grows, with Grey watching, even during the sex.

We are seeing Grey evolve as the story progresses, he now refrains from going after humans that are possessed but not at the 40 day limit. But that doesn’t mean he has gone soft.

I enjoyed the continuation of the story and am off to read the next in the series.
