Heat Fated Mates by Wolf Specter

heat fated matesBlurb

Mankind doesn’t know that dragon shifters like Dane Bennett exist, even though their history has been manipulated by the arrogant beasts for thousands of years. Unlike the rest of his species, Dane has dedicated his life to caring for humans, looking out for them, fighting for them, protecting them — and never, ever letting them know what he really is.
Wesley Byrne just broke up with his boyfriend, and he certainly isn’t looking for another. His twin brother, Ty, thinks a night out with some of the soldiers he serves with will be just what Wes needs to stop moping over a man who doesn’t deserve it.
After four hundred years, the dragon inside Dane recognizes Wes as his destiny, but Dane doesn’t trust his dragon. He’s convinced that humans can’t survive a dragon’s heat, and if he gives in it will force him to break the vow he made the day he discovered his true nature — to never take a human life.
But neither Dane nor Wes can resist the powerful pull of a fated mate, and each of them will get more than they bargained for when they finally come together.

Heat: Fated Mates is a standalone novel with a HEA ending, a satisfying epilogue, and NO CLIFFHANGERS!
Content Warning: This book is a steamy gay romance that contains explicit, unprotected love scenes and male pregnancy, or Mpreg. Adults only shifter romance!

Review

Wes has been jilted – again. His twin takes him out for consolation drinks and there he sees across a crowded room a man who sets his insides on fire, Dane.

Dane, who was in the military with Wes’s twin, sees Wes and knows he’s found his mate. This doesn’t bring him happiness, only terror and sadness, because he knows that if he claims his mate, it will kill him.

But… Dane’s dragon half cannot resist Wes and mate they do, despite Dane’s concern.

When Wes ends up pregnant it’s up to Dane to explain his new lot in life and how it may be ending in a few months time.

Luckily there’s more about Dragons than Dane knows and if he finds this out soon enough he may save them both.

**

This was so much fun! There’s the insta-love that you expect from a shifter story, but it builds, too, over time as Dane and Wes learn about one another beyond the mating heat.

The mpreg stuff is always a hoot and watching Wes navigate the vomiting, emotional swings and weight gain was hysterical. Dane was so sweet to him even though he was torn up inside about the baby.

I didn’t love that Dane was willing to walk away from Wes and leave him to die alone… but he totally redeems himself and makes it seem like the right thing to do at the time, especially when you consider the “mating fire” part of the equation.

I thought this was a creative world and hope to see more of it in the future. Maybe with the twin? Or Ben?

(PS super hot cover!)

Don’t Stop Believing by Gwen Hayes

don't stopBlurb

The Ogre from the Hill

Simon Powell, the town recluse, only comes to town to deliver firewood and get supplies. Two days before Christmas, he sees the new librarian’s car in a ditch and knows he can’t leave him on the road, but it’s too late to take him back to town. He’ll have something he’s never had in his cabin in the ten years that’s he’s lived there…company.

The Book Nerd from the City

Adam Parker moved to the small community to make big changes in his life, but being snowbound with the bearded lumberjack in his rustic cabin was something he’d thought only existed in his fantasies. Simon pushes away anyone who wants to get close to him, but Adam sees what he’s hiding in his heart and he wants it. Badly.

A Christmas to Remember

Adam smells like cinnamon and redemption and Simon aches to run his fingers over the scrape of stubble on his cheeks. To pull him into a kiss. To reignite feelings he’d denied himself for too long. Life is right there, blazing in the eyes of the town librarian. A man who isn’t afraid of him. But he learned long ago that everything he touches gets tainted, and he’ll do anything to keep his darkness away from Adam’s light.

But Adam has something else on his side—he’s been a very good boy this year and all he wants for Christmas is Simon.

Review

Simon is the ogre who lives happily (?) by himself up in the woods. The town humors him but he doesn’t let them get too close.

Adam is the new town librarian. He’s seen (and drooled over) the local misanthrope/lumberman but hasn’t yet been able to break through his icy reserve. When he’s stranded on the way out of town for Christmas and rescued by the recalcitrant Simon, it’s time to turn up the heat and see what miracles Christmas can truly bring.

**

This was a super cute holiday story! Gwen Hayes gives us some deliciously witty characters and a sweet and sexy romance. Simon’s internal dialog is hilarious and Adam is terribly sweet.

I loved that we were able to get our guys from not speaking, through their first time together all the way to their HEA in this short story. It was very satisfying.

With the exception of some sentences that could’ve used some contractions, the writing is smooth and effortless. I’d never read this author before but I will definitely look for her in the future.

I highly recommend this holiday treat and give it 5 of 5 stars!

Commander’s Spitfire (Rescue For Hire book 5) Audiobook by Bellann Summer Narrated by Darcy Stark

commander's spitfireBlurb

Welcome to the world of Rescue for Hire. Meet the team members who make up a company that forms a family of heroes. For a year, computer expert Tony Grayson was another man’s dirty little secret. After months of pain from a huge betrayal, he can finally breathe again and sees a glimmer of a future. A rescue goes wrong bringing the boss’ brother Shane Miller – who’s big, dominating, and possessive – into Tony’s life. As far as Shane is concerned, the gorgeous Italian is his. Now he just has to lead the team for his brother, fix all the family drama, and put the pieces of Tony’s heart back together. Things finally get smoothed out, only to have his ex call, wanting Tony back. Tony’s decision could change lives and careers.
Can the foundation Shane has laid for their relationship be strong enough to keep Tony? The dynamics between a hard-edged bad boy and a hot-tempered, vulnerable yet gorgeous computer nerd heat up the sheets.

Review

To sum up the first four books :(each can be read/listened to as a stand alone, but the characters in the preceding books make entrances in the following books) Cade Miller (brother to Shane) has a company he created called Rescue For Hire. It’s dedicated to saving people in natural disasters and finding lost people, etc. Each member of the team is highly skilled in one particular area and together there is nothing they can’t do. (Like the A Team!) In each of the previous books, one team member – very alpha male – finds his life partner. They always know immediately that the man they’ve met is their “forever guy” at first meeting and the bulk of the book is their conquest of said man. They also have some rescues to perform and at least once a book, one of the partners ends up in mortal danger.

Shane is an ex military man who has come to help Cade with his company now that he’s become more of a family guy and wants less field time. Shane meets Tony – already a member – whose had his heart smashed by a closeted pro-baseball player (and brother to another team member’s partner).

Tony doesn’t want to get involved again so soon after breaking up with his ball player – so he resists – but it’s futile.

**

These books are delicious fun! The men are unapologetically Alpha, and it totally works. Tony – who is no slouch himself- loves to be dominated and controlled and feels safe when someone takes over. He just has to let go first.

In the Audio format you get the bonus of having Darcy Stark for a narrator. He does each voice differently – giving each character a greater depth and giving the listener another perception and way to experience the character. In this case the man who steals the show is Shane. Oooo La La. Shane’s voice is panty-melting! It is deep and sensuous and controlling and masterful and…. Okay – you get the idea. Tony has a vague Italian heritage accent – punk-assed and spunky. Together – totally steamy!

I’m not so much into the spanking thing myself- but Shane makes it hot!

I highly recommend this series (in book or audio format) for fans of unapologetic Alpha males who control each and every situation but have a warm and gooey center for their life partner.

It’s a wonderful series and I recommend reading them/ listening to them in order to get the most from the series.

Tasting Notes by Cate Ashwood (Review)

tastingBlurb

West, a venture capitalist, has paid for his wealth and success with long hours at the office and no personal life to speak of. Meetings, conference calls, and paperwork dominate his waking hours and have kept him from honoring the promise he made to his late grandfather years before.

After leaving the Marines, Rush returns to his hometown and settled in as a Christmas Tree farmer. His life is quiet and simple, and he likes it that way. When West arrives in town and buys Rush’s parent’s vineyard on a whim, that simple life is turned upside down. The animosity between them is palpable, but Rush shelves his preconceived notions in order to protect his parents’ legacy. He agrees to help West learn how to run the vineyard, and Rush soon realizes that love doesn’t necessarily come in the package he expected.

Review

West is a very rich but lonely, workaholic. He loses his only family, his grandfather, a few years ago and hasn’t yet taken time to properly mourn him nor spread his ashes as he had planned. A glimpse at his own mortality (via watching another person die) spurs him into action. He drops all his obligations on his work partners and travels with his urn out to California. There he ends up in a sleepy but quaint town with a wonderful winery that he falls in love with. He ends up simply buying it (though it wasn’t originally for sale) and moving in with no firm plans on where to go next.

Rush is a cranky almost misanthropic retired Marine who now runs a Christmas tree farm in the same little town as his parent’s winery. He sees West across a crowded pub and though he can see the attractiveness in the man, he pigeon-holes his type as a rich prick and instantly dislikes him. When Rush finds out that his parents sold the “prick” their winery without even discussing it with him, he’s pissed. He takes out his anger on the unsuspecting West and the two are set up instantly as mortal enemies.

But… West needs help with the winery. He has no tools necessary to keep it running and Rush is attached to the idea that the winery shouldn’t fail just because some idiot bought it. So, very reluctantly, Rush agrees to “mentor” West in the running of a winery until he can either do it himself or find someone who can.

As can be imagined, their constant togetherness leads to a romantic entanglement. But… West still has obligations in Chicago and Rush can’t (or won’t) abandon his dreams to follow West. So their relationship is destined to fail unless someone is willing to bend.

**

I always find Cate Ashwood’s stories easy to fall into as her writing is so smooth and engaging. Most of this story really worked for me but there were a couple of parts that didn’t work as well.

I thought Rush and West were great “yin and yang” and they helped one another to be better people, thus they were a great couple. Their chemistry was excellent and I thought the whole “mentorship” was a great way to get them together.

I loved the whole city meets country, “Green Acres” (if you’re old enough to know the reference with Zsa Zsa Gabor) thing was great!

The sale of the winery and the relationship between Rush and the winery never made a lot of sense to me. Why didn’t he want to take it over himself? Since he claimed to want nothing to do with it, why did he care if someone else did? I wish I’d had more background information surrounding this.

West’s work in Chicago was unclear for me as well. If the business ran so successfully and he has literally millions just waiting around to spend on anything realistically, could such a big business be expected to run without him? When he moves back “temporarily” to Chicago to “fix things”, I wasn’t really sure what the plan was. It seemed to me he needed to have acknowledged either the end of the relationship right then or be planning on doing something extreme with the business if being with Rush was ever going to be an option. I know this gets worked out in the end, but I would have liked to know more about the process.

So, as a story there were some small things that bothered me, but as a romance I really liked the MCs and their chemistry and found their HEA to be very sweet and satisfying.

Acting Out Audiobook by Scotty Cade Narrated by Randy Fuller

ActingOutAUDLGBlurb

After one very long tour of duty in Afghanistan and an honorable discharge from the USMC, Elijah Preston comes home to nothing. He barely scrapes up enough money for a cheap motel in Quantico, Virginia, with no money-making opportunities in sight. A chance encounter in a local Walmart finally gives Eli hope for employment. Elijah is ready to sign on with Royce Mackey’s proposition… until he hears what’s required. Royce operates a gay military porn site and wants Eli as his next star, never mind that Eli isn’t gay. Desperate and broke, Eli grudgingly accepts Royce’s offer and soon finds himself immersed in a strange new world.

Hamish Turner’s been there before. Taking Eli under his wing, he teaches him everything he can about Royce’s operation. The two quickly become friends, easing the way for their first scene together. Awkward at first, they both ease into it and find there is more of a connection between them than either expected. Curious to see where their mutual attraction takes them, they begin a relationship off-screen. But life gets complicated when a crazed fan of Hamish’s starts sending threatening letters demanding the scenes between the two men stop. Or else….

Review

Eli was in the military for 8 years, signing up in the first place to get away from an abusive, useless family situation. He saves up all his money while in the service only to find out his a**hole family has spent all his money and wrecked his car. Now he has literally one paycheck, no job prospects, a little training in a career no one is hiring for and a lot of hopelessness.

He runs into Royce at the Walmart and Royce sees someone who could fit right in with the bunch of guys he works with at hotmilitaryguys.com. Royce offers Eli money to “perform” on camera with other straight guys like him. Though he’s skeptical, nervous, embarrassed and doubtful, Eli agrees to check things out, mostly because he’s run out of options.

What he finds is that Royce is totally up front and honest, and he really does work with a bunch of straight, ex-military guys who just need the money. He also meets Hamish, a guy who’s been there for the last 2 years for his own reasons, and is willing to show Eli the ropes.

Essentially, Eli takes to “performing” like a fish to water and he and Hamish form a “bromance” that eases the way for Eli to go from solo scenes to group scenes in the span of 2 weeks.

Though neither Eli nor Hamish will admit to being gay, it becomes clear that the two mean more to one another than just friends and both admit the chemistry between them is undeniably hot.

It’s this chemistry that gets them in trouble.

Someone is watching their growing closeness and is not happy about it. After a video of the pair is aired showing just how steamy they are together, threatening letters and emails arrive, demanding their separation “or else”.

On the relationship front, Eli can’t wrap his mind around being involved with a guy romantically and this drives a wedge between him and Hamish.

The danger of the stalker forces them together and forces them to confront their feelings for one another. Of course we have a very HFN (probably HEA).

**

Most of this is really hot gay sex as discovered by a truly straight guy and it’s written very well.

The relationship between Eli and Hamish is sweet and fairly realistic and enjoyable to watch unfold.

The bit about the stalker felt a little contrived, something to force the relationship in a speedy fashion. In a way I wish the author had stuck with the main hurdle, overcoming labels and dealing with the idea that two “people” can love whomever they want, despite societal expectations. The groundwork was there and it wouldn’t have taken much more effort to forge through Eli’s barriers. Sure, the stalker did it faster, made him re-think his priorities sooner, but the pay out would have been bigger had he come to the realization on his own. (In my opinion.)

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, it’s fast paced and super hot. I recommend it to anyone who likes the GFY trope or enjoys the gay porn trope. It’s very satisfying!

Audio

Randy Fuller does an okay job with this.  He doesn’t do a lot with the voices but he doesn’t detract from the experience.

Strength of the Wolf (Book 2) By Kendall McKenna

strength wolfBlurb

Major Tim Madison has his hands full. A young Alpha werewolf has stormed into his personal life, while Tim struggles to keep military werewolves from safe on the front lines.

After a fiery exit from Afghanistan, Tim Madison is promoted to major. Jeremy Wagner is a civilian, just beginning his Transition to True Alpha. As a lone wolf, he has no one to teach him the vital principles of strong leadership. After a volatile chance encounter, Tim and Jeremy form an intimate bond. As Jeremy prepares to someday lead his own pack, Tim struggles with military werewolves being needlessly maimed in combat, as well as specifically targeted by hostile forces. Despite Tim and Jeremy’s feelings, werewolf and human politics or family conflict could prevent their mate-bond.

Review

Jeremy is a True Alpha in training and Tim is our werewolf expert from book one. Tim is also 10 years older than Jeremy and Jeremy is currently acting like a kid going through puberty.

With the help of Noah and Lucas the two realize they mean a lot to one another and Tim helps Jeremy grow into the werewolf he should be.

Some of this takes place in the war zone, but most of this is a civilian story, as compared to book one. You need to have read book one to really appreciate this book, as much of it is not explained in detail in this book. Also, we see quite a lot of Lucas and Noah and that is only a good thing if you’ve read the first book.

On one hand I liked this book better because the boys were more open about their feelings and there was not nearly as much hinging on a conversation to clear things up. On the other hand, the chemistry between Noah and Lucas completely eclipses that of Tim and Jeremy and since both couples are present in this book, I felt a little bad for Tim and Jeremy.

I am really enjoying this series and highly recommend it and look forward to the next two books.

I give it 4.5 of 5 stars.

Strength of the Pack (Book 1) by Kendall McKenna

strengthBlurb
A Marine werewolf and his commander bring legends to life while surviving combat deployment in Afghanistan.

Lieutenant Lucas Young doesn’t know much about shifters. When Sergeant Noah Hammond is assigned to Lucas’ platoon, the Marine Corps’ True Alpha werewolf challenges the Lieutenant’s authority and his self-control. As Lucas learns to dominate and command Noah, he struggles against a strong attraction and deepening emotional bond. During their combat deployment to Afghanistan, Lucas and Noah begin mirroring legendary partnerships. Their bond and their power grow as they survive dangerous combat and ambushes. When one of them is wounded in battle, they both must embrace the strength of their bond before they lose each other forever.

Review

Lucas is a commanding officer in Afghanistan, one of his men is Noah, a True Alpha werewolf. Though in military terms Lucas outranks him, Noah, in terms of werewolf hierarchy is about as high ranking as it gets. The military – known for its flexibility – (sarcasm) – actually accounts for this and allows the wolves their own pecking order within the military ranks.

Everything seems to be working out well, but there is an extra something going on between Noah and Lucas. We find out, over time, that Lucas and Noah share an extra special bond between them and their ability to communicate with one another makes them invaluable on a war front.

The bulk of this book is spent avoiding explaining to Lucas the nature of their bond, and expecting him to go along with it, which he does. The two grow closer as soldiers and friends and then lovers, all the while muddling through confusion as to why he feels compelled to do the things he does.

Clearly Kendall McKenna knows her military speak well, she uses all the three letter acronyms and jargon with a practiced hand.

Her version of shifters is really quite sweet, given the setting, and though I was driven crazy by the fact that a lot of the conflict could have been eliminated by one simple conversation, I appreciated the fact that these are fairly recalcitrant alpha males who are unused to explaining their feelings and therefore were not likely to have a sit-down and put it all out there.

I had wanted there to be more “declarations” of love but, if you read between the lines you will see their feelings are more than clear and if you continue on with the series their love for one another is never in doubt.

I highly recommend this book and give it a 4.5 of 5 stars.

Ty Hard (Willow Spring Ranch Book 1) by Laura Harner

ty hardBlurb

Tyler has used Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell as a shield against the truth since he was seventeen. Cut loose from his Navy career and mourning his mentor’s death, Ty must come to terms with his desires for another man even while he fights to keep the PTSD from pulling him under.

Rancher Cass Cartwright’s relationships never last more than a few hours, and that’s just the way he likes it. Now he’s done the one thing he swore never to do: fallen in love. Can Cass convince Ty to let go of his past or will sabotage at the ranch kill their love before it has a chance to grow?

Review

Ty has lost a lot in this world, his family, his career, now somebody close by. But he has a place stay and a new job, with a super-hot boss, Cass.

Cass owns a ranch out in the boonies and doesn’t ever imagine he’ll have a partner. He finds his lovin’ in the next town – miles and miles away – to protect his heart and his sanity.

When a sweet matchmaker plops Ty in his lap, he can’t say no. He has to help, protect and love this new ranch cook – even if he has to convince Ty of that plan first.

**

This is a very sweet, sentimental, and sexy short story about two hot guys finding each other and filling the lonely spots in their hearts.

There is a bit of drama thrown in and some PTSD, but mostly it’s about them falling in love.

It’s a wonderful first book to a series and there are loads of interesting men at the ranch whose stories must be told!

I’ve never read this author before, but I’m a fan now!

Closet Confession by Kindle Alexander

closet confessionsBlurb

This stand alone version includes Bonus Scenes adding an additional ten thousand words to this novella. Closet Confession was previously released in the Night Shift Anthology.

Dr. Derek Babineaux is intelligent, dedicated, and one of the best ER physicians in the fast-paced world of critical care at Tulane Medical in New Orleans. Always on top of his game, he’s thrown off balance when the newest medical staff member finally unleashes his hidden desires.

Justin Delacroix’s job at the inner city’s busiest hospital might be just what he needs to ease back into civilian life after a long stint in the military. High-performing shifts make working as a trauma nurse at TMC the perfect way to utilize his skills and quick reaction times. There’s only one problem, his attraction for one sexy ER doctor is off the charts, but he has his reasons for not returning Dr. Baby’s night shift advances. Or maybe he doesn’t.

Review

First, let me warn you that since this was first presented as a short story in an anthology the first part takes place later in the lives of our MCs and there’s a flash-back that explains their back-story in the middle, followed by a new part added of their future.

So it’s a bit confusing but stick with it – it’s totally worth it!

Derek and Justin work at the same hospital and have the hots for one another. Justin does’t want to come out of the closet and also feels he isn’t good enough for the good Doctor.

Derek is tired of hiding his relationship but doesn’t want to push too hard.

In the end, both men realize they need to be brave to get what they truly want from life or else losing everything.

**

This is a super sweet, very hot, sometimes funny novella that will leave you with a smile on your face.

I loved the nurses and Dr. Baby’s aunt – so funny!

The smexy times are hot and the emotion is touching.

Finding the Way Home by Sean Michael

FindingWayHomeBlurb

When he arrives home from a long stint in the hospital after losing his right arm to an IED blast, Sergeant James Miller certainly doesn’t expect his keys not to work and a strange man answering his door, only to learn his boyfriend has dumped him. Yet that’s exactly what happens, and James is just happy that he can count on his old platoon buddy to have his back, and a spare bedroom he can use until he gets on his feet.
Horace Grundy the third—“Horse” to anyone who doesn’t want to get his butt kicked—is retired and has a tidy house on the beach that he calls home. The place isn’t big, but he figures there is plenty of room for James, even if he has always fancied the man.
Thankfully, the two of them fit together well, and soon the roommates become more. But James’s past isn’t ready to let go of him yet, and the new lovers are caught off-guard when James’s ex-boyfriend suddenly reappears in his life. Can James and Horse’s new relationship weather the storm?

Review

This is a lovely short story about James “Jimmy” Miller who gets back from the War with an amputation only to find his boyfriend of seven years has left him for a doctor.

He calls on his Army buddy, Horace “Horse” Grundy for a place to crash. Horse, who has always had a crush on Jimmy, readily agrees.
There is virtually no angst in this lovely story of two guys re-connecting and then falling in love. Since it’s Sean Michael, there is plenty of hot sex and some tender moments surrounding body acceptance.

At the end there is a bizarre incident with the ex that kind of feels out of place, but it serves as a catalyst to move Jimmy and Horse’s relationship forward as well as give Jimmy some closure, so in the end it works.

I really enjoyed this little story about love and recommend it to fans of the author, military men, disabled vets and hot sex scenes!
