Get a Grip (Bluewater Bay #19) by L.A. Witt

Riptide Presents

Blurb

If a tree falls in Bluewater Bay . . . could it be fate?

A year after his divorce, Shane Andrews isn’t interested in dating—not that he has time, between three kids and a demanding job as a grip. When a windstorm knocks a tree onto one of the Wolf’s Landing soundstages, Shane’s there to help with the mess . . . and so is firefighter Aaron Tucker.

A former smoke jumper, Aaron’s an adrenaline junkie and way too restless and reckless to be relationship material. As far as he’s concerned, monogamy is for penguins, and he’d rather be alone than tied down. Signing up to be a stepparent? No, thank you.

But after a scorching-hot night together, they’re hooked. Aaron is a taste of the excitement Shane’s been lacking, and Shane’s pushing buttons Aaron didn’t know he had. The more they’re together, the less Aaron craves wild nights with other men . . . but the more Shane wants to play the field like he never got to in his twenties.

This could be the love neither man knew he needed, but only if Shane gets his feet back on the ground before Aaron walks away.

Review

I’ve not always had the best of luck with this series, but I was really attracted to this because it has some older MCs. (I’m a sucker for those!) And a family, too!

What I liked about this was the sincere emotions that flowed between our guys throughout most of the book. (Of course it was super annoying when they kept ignoring the obvious…but, hey, that’s what kept me turning pages!)

Witt is amazing when it comes to hot sex scenes and there are plenty here! But she’s also great at giving us really relatable characters with real life problems without bringing it to the level of mundane. (I loved that the ‘ex’ is still part of the picture!)

You don’t have to be following the series at all to enjoy this (it’s really only peripherally part of the series) and I think if you like later in life / second chance love stories this will be right up your alley!

(The only thing that kept this from being a 5 star read was the soft HEA – though it felt very promising I’d have liked to see them a bit further down the road, or with a more definite “promise” if you know what I mean!)

Highly Recommended!

F.A.S.T. — Firefighter Assist and Search Team

Firefighter and surfing champion, Jerry Wallender, looks like a hero to the world, but he can’t see it. He keeps falling for these intellectual guys who end up making him feel dumb and unneeded. On top of that, Mick Cassidy, super-gorgeous firefighter and total homophobe, makes Jerry’s life miserable with his slurs. Then one day Mick’s nice to Jerry and, at the Firefighter’s Ball, Jerry offers a helping hand and ends up with a hand-job. What the hell is going on?

Mick Cassidy is great with fighting fires and solving math problems but rotten with people. Raised by a gay-hating preacher, Mick’s carefully constructed world of gay bashing starts to crumble when he meets Jerry, the nicest, kindest man he’s ever known. Mick’s never wanted a woman and can’t stop thinking about sex with Jerry. In fact, he can’t stop doing it. Does that make him gay? And if he’s gay, what happens to his whole life? A hook-up between sweet Jerry and mean Mick might be total disaster — or the smartest idea Jerry ever had.

I couldn’t really detect any changes from the first edition and this one, other than the cover which I like a lot better!

Upon re-reading I was reminded how much I love Jerry and how really awful Mick was.

I still think this is the best book in the series and I enjoyed reading it again!

Avery Syracuse is a New York transplant with the Skeenville Fire Department. He’s a little rough around the edges, but loveable. Down on his luck in the romance department, he could use some help with the bills and is looking for a roommate when new transfer, Luke Turner arrives.

Luke is one of the best firemen Avery has ever seen, and it doesn’t make sense for Luke to be wasting his time in Skeenville. The two men have an instant connection, although Luke has never been into guys before. While Avery is very attracted to Luke, he knows there is something the guy is hiding, and he’s worried that if they get involved, this secret may come around and bite him in the ass one day.

Review

Two sexy firemen yum. Avery is a big straight talking gruff New York Italian who has just broken up with his cheating cop boyfriend. Luke is new to the Station and seems to bring a lot of baggage with him. That doesn’t put Avery off his attraction to Luke. I like the way this gay for you story has both of them talking through their feelings and doubts before giving in to lust rather than after. There is great chemistry between them driving the story along.

They both have issues. Avery is scared to commit to a relationship again an keeps pushing Luke to tell him what’s bothering him. Luke can’t bring himself to talk about it though and it strains their relationship before it gets a chance to begin. It all gets sorted out in the end and they get their happy every after but I had just got invested in the story when it ended. All in all it’s still a good afternoon read with hot hunky firemen, can’t go wrong with that.

Men In Uniform: The Tinder Chronicles- Oceanside Fire Series by Tory Temple

Blurb

Return to Oceanside Fire, where the sizzling passion between men scorches everything they touch—especially each other. For firefighter Chris Matthews and instructor Morgan Daniels, it’s dislike at first sight—but that doesn’t mean there’s any relief from the heat building between them, and it only takes a spark to set the tinder ablaze.
Will Chris and Morgan go from enemies to lovers, or will they remain enemies with healthy libidos who stoke each other’s flames? Morgan is no fan of firefighters in general, and he finds Chris especially grating. But when they’re together, the sexual tension is thick enough to cut with a knife—and there’s only one way to work it off. A battle of wills is sure to follow. Add in an age difference, and finding common ground will be an uphill battle. Even if they succeed in building a relationship, secrets and suspicion could reduce everything to ash.

Review

This book consists of 3 novellas. In the first one, Chris and Morgan start a relationship consisting of initial dislike, lust/sex, arguments and angry make-up – rinse and repeat.

Morgan dislikes firefighters because of a past experience, yet he continues to work with them as a trainer and hooks up with one. I found Morgan hard to like – he seemed to dole out affection when he felt like it. Chris, on the other hand seemed content to accept whatever Morgan dished out, although there were times that he called Morgan on his bullshit.

Within a very short time, Morgan decides they are in a relationship – Chris was blind-sided (as I was) because just a few pages before, they were still behaving as if this was a casual hook-up.

The second novella takes up 2 years later – Morgan and Chris are still doing the same things – arguing, loving, making up with sex and arguing again. However, Morgan has an issue involving his ex-lover that could threaten his and Chris’s relationship. It gets resolved nicely without any protracted misunderstandings.

The third story is a nice continuation of their life together.

Although there are some funny moments, especially when they argued back and forth, I could not get into the stories. I think I would have liked a little more backstory development, especially for Morgan. And, (I never thought I would say this), I got a little tired of all the sex scenes (gasp!).

Even though this book was not for me, it was a good read.

A straight firefighter discovers an irresistible attraction for his best friend’s younger brother—one that could lead to complete disaster.
A perpetual bachelor, firefighter lieutenant Hollywood Wright hops from one woman’s bed to another, searching for something he never finds. Has his father’s emotional and physical abuse somehow damaged him? Or is something else going on, something that involves the intense and uncomfortable feelings aroused by his best friend’s little brother?

Sexy-as-sin paramedic Chad Caldwell has always been out and proud. Sure, some gay-bashers are harassing him, but he’s determined to be true to himself. There’s just one problem: he’s hung up on Hollywood, his older brother’s straight best friend. When Hollywood’s apartment is damaged by fire, Chad reluctantly takes him in. Will Chad’s heart survive such close proximity to a man who’s both unattainable and everything Chad wants?

To their mutual surprise, Hollywood finds Chad and his world fascinating—and much hotter than anything he’s ever experienced. But with a rabidly homophobic father, is Hollywood doomed to die in the closet? Chad won’t accept anything less than a public relationship, no matter how amazing the sex is. Can Hollywood ever accept the man he has always kept buried deep inside?

Review

Although part of a series, Lover on Top can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed reading the story.
Chad and Hollywood are firefighters- Chad is gay while Hollywood, (he’s a friend of Chad’s older brother), is straight. Chad has been in lust with Hollywood for a while and when he has the chance to offer assistance to Hollywood, he uses the opportunity to get to know him better.
What follows is a story of Hollywood overcoming emotional/physical abuse (from his father) to finding himself and allowing himself to fall in love with Chad. The story is well written and is told with humour, some angst, action (they’re firefighters after all), and hot love scenes.
If you have a thing for a good, well fleshed romance and firefighters (as an added bonus), this book is for you!

Firefighter Jason “Jase” Weller and EMT Scott Bronson are living the perfect life. They work together in jobs they love, they live together, and in their downtime, they still can’t get enough of each other. It’s been six amazing years. Then on Christmas Eve, Jase’s former lover Elsa shows up with a six-year-old girl in tow. The strung-out junkie claims Kerry is Jase’s daughter and it’s his turn to care for her, and then she walks out.
Shocked at both the fact that Elsa is now a junkie and that he has a daughter he never knew about, Jase nonetheless steps up to the plate as her father and Scott offers his full support. Having an instant family comes with plenty of challenges, and the two men work to deal with sweeping changes in their lives and to make things right for Kerry.
It’s not going to be easy, and their new circumstances test them and their relationship like nothing ever has. They’ll need all the love they have for each other—and the love they discover for their daughter—to keep from breaking apart.

Review
Boy. I’m not sure how to really even review this.

First, the couple is already together – as you can tell by the blurb – so their “romance” is pretty well … established. It almost reads like a sequel wherein we’d met the MCs in an earlier book and this was “what happens next”. They definitely have stuff to overcome in their relationship, but it’s not that they don’t love one another so it’s kind of a strange book to categorize from that sense.

It’s Sean Michael, so we do get some sex and that is pretty steamy – but this is the “family book” Sean Michael versus the “BDSM” Sean Michael so sex isn’t the main focus.

The main focus is, instead, the trials and tribulations of two youngish men, who hadn’t ever really “wanted” kids (at least not yet) suddenly becoming parents. Which is… kinda interesting but more … exhausting and sometimes whiny.

On the one hand, I think the author did a good job of setting up realistic hurdles and having the couple work through them in ways that felt authentic. Maybe a little too realistic. It just felt like work and I wasn’t ever very invested in anything because you knew they were going to stick together so it was just a matter of time and… it was just a bit – blah.

What didn’t help was the fact that I was listening to this and the narrator, Steve Balderson, isn’t very interesting either. His narration felt very “story book telling time at the library” to me and didn’t inspire a lot of passion. It was fairly monotone with no variations for the MCs and the girl’s voice was just pitched higher.

He’s a new narrator to me, and I’d be cautious about picking another story narrated by him in the future. It might have been his subject matter or it might have just been how he chose to portray it.

In any case, I can’t really say I recommend this. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t good.

All in all I’d give it 2.5 of 5 stars for both the story and the narration.

“Your life can change in an instant”~ Madden
I never thought a night out could change everything. All I wanted was to dance, drink, maybe take a cute guy home for a night of fun. I met the guy, but the night ended as a nightmare. Screams, and blood, and tragedy haunt my dreams. I’m alive and I owe it all to the gorgeous marine who refused to leave me for dead. But how can I start a new relationship when I’m not even sure who I am anymore?

“I’ll always save you” ~Thane
After a long work week all I wanted was to let my hair down and to meet a nice guy. When I laid eyes on the gorgeous, tattooed man at the bar, I had to have him. I never would have thought the night could end in such horror. I saved his life, and I swear I’ll save him as many times as I have to. Even if it means saving him from himself.

**This is the first book in the Heathens Ink series in which every book can be read as a stand alone.

CAUTION: this book is recommended for readers 18+ and does contain one scene of graphic violence that may disturb some readers. And, in case it wasn’t clear from the description, this is an M/M romance, man parts will be touching.

Review

It wasn’t clear to me from the description, and it doesn’t say so in the book, but this book “felt” like it could be about any of the survivors from Orlando’s shooting. Thane and Madden hadn’t ever met before the night in the club when they end up sort of forced together after the tragic shooting injures Madden.

But… this story is more than that. Madden has a past that makes this particular crisis all the more scary and Thane has to slowly learn about it – even though they are thrown together as though they’ve been dating a long time.

I’m going to put some triggers in a spoiler so that people who have them can look and people who don’t mind can skip it, but there are SEVERAL in the story.

Spoiler Inside SelectShow

This was a far darker story than I had anticipated and far more complex. In a way we get a bit of “insta love”. Both Thane and Madden are very interested in the other and jump very quickly into a relationship that defies explanation. It evolves as it can while the two are essentially living together as strangers and it’s a very unique situation.

The steam level is mid-level, I’d say – and sometimes it felt out of place. More than anything, this is a hurt/comfort story and though I know the two guys are attracted to each other, I think focusing on the serious issues – which were HUGE – was the main story and the sex only a side bit. For the most part, I felt this was appropriate, but there were a couple of times where I thought – “Would he even want sex now?” ‘

This was the first I’d read by this author and I’d definitely look to something from her again. I think there are some compelling new stories in store from Madden’s work crew and they look really interesting!

If you’re in the mood for dark, hurt/comfort, sorta insta-love – this is the right book for you!

Trenton Carpenter is all grown up. Now a firefighter with some of the other guys we know and love from this series; he’s spent the last several years, growing up and getting to know his brother. Unlucky in love and not wanting to settle for less than his ideal life that he wants, he’s choosy about who he lets close.
That is, until he meets sexy police officer Kade Morgan.

Kade Morgan is a closeted, sexy as sin, police officer that keeps his cards close to his chest. Nobody knows much about the man except for his bad attitude and permanent scowl. They’d never guess that he’s a protective big brother and ….a single parent.
Seeing how all these guys know everybody in town, it was only a matter of time before they met. Alvin introduced the brood to Kade and his sister Callie and after a night of drinking together; they were brought into the fold.

Kade has a hard time staying away from Trenton and Trenton doesn’t want to stay away from Kade, or his sweet, little girl who wrapped him around her little finger the day they’d met.

An accident at work, a bloody mess and a heated kiss or two between these two hot guys make it impossible for them to deny what’s right in front of them.
Will a department change and the risk of losing Trenton be enough to snap Kade out of his tightly closed closet, or did Trenton make a mistake and pick another wrong guy?

This story is m/m romance with no cliffhanger and a HEA.
Mature language and situations.

Review

This was a bit of a time jump for us. Trenton is the little brother from the last book, who was 15 and is now 21. He’s now a firefighter and he falls for Kade at a scene.

Kade is not out, but knows he’s gay. He doesn’t see Trenton as a possible love interest for a lot of reasons: he’s too young, he doesn’t think he can be out in his job, he’s worried about his daughter.

There was a lot of this story that could have been “fixed” with a simple conversation, and that bothers me when it’s the main plot device to keep our MCs apart.

I also didn’t connect as well with these guys as in previous stories because the hurt/comfort wasn’t nearly as significant.

I thought the family time was great and Kade’s sister is a riot! I loved seeing all the guys again and thought that – as a story – this was nice, just not as much depth of feeling as I’d had with other stories in this series.

2nd edition

A Balls to the Wall Romance

Renowned artist Rodney Mansfield stands five foot six, has pink hair, six earrings, a black belt in karate—and a desperate yearning for firefighter Hunter Fallon. But Rod, the Runtback of Notre Dame, knows he’ll never land the beautiful “straight gay” guy, so Rod musters his altruism and helps his more masculine friend Jerry attract Hunter. As if a broken heart wasn’t enough, Rod saves Hunter from a firehouse homophobe—humiliating Hunter in front of his dad!

Hunter lives a dream life—his father’s dream. While he’d like to teach literature in college, read poetry in the sun, and find a strong guy to top him, he fights fires for his dad. Hunter hates flamboyant guys like Rodney. So why can’t he resist him? Maybe it’s time to admit this is one flame he has no desire to put out.

First Edition published by Etopia Press, 2012.Morgan - Signature-small

Though this is the second book in the series, they are absolutely okay as standalones. I do like watching the progression, however, as each new couple (or triad!) meets and we see them in future stories.

Rod is the artist who painted David – if you read book one. He’s very flamboyant and he both loves and hates this about himself. He’s also not very tall, but he’s super tough and a black belt in Karate.

There’s a lot to this story that I love: I love Rodney. He’s a great character. Self assured. Charismatic. Colorful. Stereo-type defying. Hunter is unique as well. I love that Rodney helps Hunter but that it’s Hunter’s family who helps him the most.

What I didn’t love: the first two times Hunter and Rodney are together physically felt both like cheating and a little less than consensual. I don’t mean rape – while Rodney probably could hurt Hunter physically , he would never – but more mentally. I didn’t like that it was clear Hunter wasn’t mentally in a good place to make decisions, he was dating Jerry, and he didn’t want to want Rodney. I didn’t feel good about how Rodney sort of “seduced” him… it’s hard to explain but it clearly wasn’t something both men were on the same page about and it left both men feeling bad after it happened.

So, I’m conflicted about the rating, because I love Rodney and appreciate so much about the story, but that aspect really brought my appreciation of this story down. I’m going to go with 3 of 5 stars and leave it at that.

(I’m not sure if anything changed from the first edition to this one, but I’d read the original and couldn’t tell a difference, but it’d been a long time ago.)

The boys are back with all of their heart break and shenanigans!

Kevin and Lane…Where to start….
We meet both of them through our mutual friends Alvin and Teddy from books 1 & 2.

Kevin is a family and adoption attorney in his small Massachusetts town. Content with his life as a loner, he does his bit to help families have a better life because he, himself, didn’t have a great one. Awkward and painfully shy; he doesn’t know what to do with himself when he catches the eye of firefighter and all around great guy, Lane Bennett…..

Lane Bennett works with Alvin at their community’s fire station. Being around all his loved up friends and their partners; he’s still a little bitter about the betrayal of catching his ex-fiancé in bed with another man. That is… until he sets his sights on the shy, timid, quiet attorney that helped his good friend Teddy.

Just when their relationship gets off the ground; Lane’s troubled sister comes to visit with some baggage that anyone would be hesitant to take on; let alone someone in a new relationship. Will Kevin and Lane stick together and give each other the type of love they both crave or will it be too much to handle, too early on for either of them?

This story contains graphic language and sexual situations between two men. (You’re welcome) I’m also feel strongly against cliffhangers and I’m a sucker for a good HEA. Enjoy!

Review

I am LOVING this series! It’s absolutely what I need right now because it is full of all the warm fuzzies a person could ever want!

In book 2, we meet Lane and Kevin at the arson investigation surrounding Teddy’s house fire. Kevin is a family lawyer and Lane a fireman. We learn that they are both attracted to one another but haven’t done anything about it yet because they have past histories that make them a bit wary.

My heart absolutely bled for Kevin. His story is SO SAD! I think verbal abuse is one of those less recognized problems because it doesn’t leave any obvious physical scars but the emotional ones are just as devastating, maybe more because it’s not recognized or stopped, so often. I was also crushed by his “celebrating the BAR exam” story and was really pleased at how that got explained to Lane early on.

One thing I appreciate about this series is the turn around our MCs make fairly early on. We get their back-story but then we see them on the path to healing fairly quickly. My poor heart can’t stand to see them in pain, and it’s wonderful to see them helping one another through their issues.

Another thing I appreciate about this series is the smexy times. There is just the right amount of sexual tension and on page sex scenes to keep me feeling fulfilled without me feeling like the sex is just filler. (And it’s usually pretty HOT!)

Spoiler Inside SelectShow

I can’t wait to move on in the series! I reviewed book 4 here: https://openskyebookreviews.com/the-only-thing-i-need-unlikely-heroes-4-by-jenny-wood/ , but I’m gonna re-read it so I can look at it with new eyes! Then on to book 5!

There are still a few editing and grammatical errors, but I think the writing is excellent and the stories are sublime! 4.5 of 5 stars
