After a run of bad luck, gifted horse trainer Cole Frasier thinks he’s lost his touch. When he’s offered three times his normal rate to gentle a stallion, he needs the money badly enough he jumps at the opportunity, even if his boss is of questionable morality.

Once he meets Midnight Blood, he knows there’s something special about the horse, but he doesn’t know how special until he begins sharing dreams with the magnificent steed.

Derek Dancing Hawk is a horse shifter trapped in his horse form due to guilt over losing the wild herd he was guarding. When he meets Cole, as Midnight Blood, he wants to find a way to be human again. During a fight between Cole and the ranch foreman, he manages to shift and save Cole, but his transformation from horse to human is captured on camera. This not only gives Cole’s boss blackmail material, but also creates the need to warn the horse shifter council of the threat to their anonymity. The existence of shifters is a closely guarded secret, one they will go to great lengths to keep.

Review

Derek loses his herd to a group of hunters and his guilt forces him into his horse-form permanently for the last several years. He ends up owned by an evil jerk named Oscar and being trained by the magical trainer, Cole.

Cole is trying to get his mojo back after losing one of his training horses to a devastating injury. He takes a risky job for a lot of money knowing that something isn’t right.

Derek and Cole connect right from the start and it’s clear that they’re meant to be when they begin dreaming each other’s dreams. But the evil Oscar won’t let them be and ends up blackmailing them to do his bidding.

Fortunately there are more powers that be out there in Derek and Cole’s corner and life ends up taking some interesting twists …

**

This is a fairly unique shifter book, as far as I’m concerned. Most of the book Derek is a horse, but in his dreams he’s a man and he and Cole can build their relationship.

I got pretty frustrated by the evil Oscar… and wished the story moved a bit quicker in the middle… but I loved the twists and turns the story took and thought the world-building was fascinating and refreshing.

This looks like it might become a series and I look forward to reading more from this world.

StolenSuitor[The]LGBlurb

All of Clyde’s Corner, Montana, knows local dandy Chris Ramsey will marry Trix Stubben, young widow and heir to the richest ranch in the area. But one woman isn’t too keen on the idea. Mabe Crassen wants to get her hands on that ranch, so she sets her older son to court Trix, and her younger son, Jeremy, to distract Chris and lure him astray.

Jeremy Crassen thinks his mother’s scheme is crazy. But he wants desperately to go off to college, which Mabe will agree to—if he seduces Chris. How will shy, virginal, secretly gay Jeremy attract Chris, who seems determined to do the right thing and marry Trix? Jeremy can’t compete with a rich female widow. Or can he?

Review

Jeremy’s mother – Mabe – wants Jeremy and his brother Eric to disrupt the “romance” between Chris and Trix so that Eric can win the hand of Trix and inherit the ranch her late husband left her.

Jeremy is to seduce the “obviously” gay Chris even though Jeremy himself is not exactly “out”.

In the end things end up quite differently than anyone planned and through many twists and turns everyone ends up exactly where they need to be with a delightful HEA.

**

Eli Easton is a terrific writer. She always makes me laugh (and sometimes cry!) with her moving characters. Jeremy is far more than he seems on the surface and though I really, really didn’t want to like anyone in the Crassen family, I ended up loving them all – perhaps the “loser” Eric the best!

I didn’t ever get quite a good handle on Chris, however. He had some bad experiences in college that made him look upon all gay relationships in a bad light and is now determined to settle in to a sexless if not loveless marriage all before he’s even 30!

Trix turns out to be a dark horse in this story. She ends up showing a lot more depth than I originally thought she was going to have and I really ended up rooting for her part of the story more than even Chris and Jeremy!

There were some parts of this story, however, that just didn’t sit well with me. I wanted to see more of Jeremy and Chris together on page than we did and maybe a bit fewer POV shifts. Though I enjoyed Trix and Eric’s story as well as Billy and Mabe, I really wanted to understand Chris more and follow him with Jeremy after the big “drama”.

Janie didn’t ring true to me as four year old, Mabe felt far older than her forty-two years and Chris also seemed far more jaded than his years would account for. Maybe if everyone had been aged a bit more some of their actions would have felt more authentic and age appropriate.

The other thing that really didn’t set well with me was John and how “replaceable” he felt to both Billy and Trix.

I still cried when Billy was out searching for Janie and that tells me the story was well written even though the shift was to a different set of character.    (I also loved seeing Josh and Ben again!)

Red Dirt Christmas (Red Dirt Heart 3.5) by NR Walker

red dirt xmasBlurb

Travis had been here at Sutton Station for just over a year. We were technically engaged, not that we’d told anyone. He was happy just knowin’ I’d said yes, and I had some head-clearin’ stuff to work through. Knowing I was good enough for Trav was one thing, but knowing if I was good enough to be a husband and father was somethin’ else entirely.

Life at Sutton Station had never been better. Business was strong, Trudy and Bacon’s little baby, Gracie, was a few weeks old now and as cute as a button, Ma’s health was good, and my relationship with Laura and Sam was in a pretty good place. And Travis? Well, life with him was still all kinds of perfect.

But, to Travis’s dismay, Christmas at the Station was just another day. Another day of getting up before the sun, feeding animals, fixin’ what needed fixin’, and checking water troughs all while tryin’ to keep out of the blistering heat.

And this year weren’t much different. Only that it was Travis’s first Sutton Station Christmas. The fact we didn’t go all out with decorations and celebrations baffled him, and if I was bein’ truthful, it disappointed him too.

Which was why I had to make it a special kind of Christmas…

Review

This was another quick look at the amazingly cute lives of Travis and Charlie. It takes place before book 4 since book 4 had all those lovely things that happened in the boys’ future.

Charlie gives Travis something he’s really not expecting for Christmas because it’s their first and Travis’ first from home. It’s super sweet with a little bit of sexy thrown in.

If you’re a fan – you gotta read this!

Destined Prey (Wild Ones Book 1) by Bailey Bradford

51dc3cHUFuL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_Blurb

All Jack Tucker wanted was to come home for a little while and try to figure out where his life had gone wrong. Moving from Wyoming to New York hadn’t turned out the way he’d thought it would, and a bad breakup leaves him bruised in more than just the emotional sense.
He doesn’t expect to be glad he’s back on the Double T Ranch with his brother, Rhett, and he sure doesn’t expect to find the place crawling with coywolves, wolves, and coyotes. There seems to be some kind of animal-warfare going on, and he and Rhett are caught in the middle of it.

Coywolves—the hybrid of wolves and coyotes, hated by both, and more predatory than either. Add in the fact that all the battling species are shifters, and there’s bound to be trouble.
Ben Akers is part of his brother’s pack. The only coywolf shifters in existence, they find themselves under constant attack from wolf and coyote packs determined to make the Akers pack extinct. But coywolves don’t die out so easy, and when Ben’s life takes a surprising turn in the form of one sexy human named Jack Tucker, they’re both in for surprises, danger, and, if Destiny rules, an abiding love that most people—and shifters—only dream of.

Review

Jack moved back to Wyoming to nurse his wounds from an abusive ex. His brother is there to help and thankfully, comes out as being gay, too.

There are strange things going on with the animals on the ranch, though and one night one of the feuding animals shows up and is able to talk into Jack’s mind!

Ben is a coywolf shifter – one of the hated hybrids – who is part of the feud between the wolves, the coyotes and the coywolves. He scents Jack as his mate but his lack of history and formal training don’t tell him much more than that.

Fortunately Jack and Ben meet Ernesto – who is something else entirely – and he helps them with their shifter problems.

**

This is a unique new shifter series with some original elements including the hybrids and the hell-hounds.

I think that fans of the author as well as shifter addicts everywhere will love it.

Full Circle (Never Too Early Book 3) by Chris Owen and Tory Temple

fullBlurb

In the final book of the Never Too Early series, cowboys Jake and Tor and firefighters Chance and Tucker have more on their plates than they bargained for. What started out as friendship has developed into strong feelings, and the couples continue to grow and learn about each other. However, adding two and two is more than a simple math problem. Words and emotions can be a dangerous mix, as the four men discover, and jealousy and miscommunication threaten what they’ve built together.

When two of the four unexpectedly connect, it sends all of them reeling. Pride is bruised and feelings are wounded, although they try desperately to hold themselves together in order to navigate this new territory. The physical distance between them all is both a blessing and a curse. When one of them reveals something that can’t be taken back, it threatens the relationships of all four men. How do two separate couples blend themselves to become one unit? The doubts and fears threaten to overwhelm them all, and no one will emerge unscathed.

Review

This is the third in the series and definitely best read in order.

What an undertaking! I really admire the authors, taking two sets of lovers – beloved lovers! – and introducing them and then integrating them into the others lives. From a writing standpoint – how fun! – and from a reader’s viewpoint as well.

It was harder, though, as a reader, to see the stress that the new “love” caused the couples. Sure – in the end it served like any other hurdle – but somehow I was a bit more “hurt” for the guys because I wanted the new relationship to work but I also really felt for the guys not involved, too.

In the end, I highly recommend this to fans of the series because if you’re like me you just had to see how these authors made this work out and they did!

Let it Ride (Book 2) by LC Chase

let it rideBlurb

Pickup man Bridge Sullivan is the kind of cowboy everyone wants—as a brother, a friend, a lover. People think he’s straight, but Bridge isn’t one for labels, and when a sexy male paramedic jumpstarts his heart, he charges in with all guns blazing.

New York City transplant Eric Palmer grew up in foster care. While he always had a roof over his head, he never felt love or a sense of belonging . . . until he joined the California rodeo circuit as a paramedic and found a band of brothers who took him in as one of their own. Now, one in particular is making Eric’s pulse race.

When things heat up between Bridge and Eric, Bridge has to prove to Eric he’s not just experimenting with the rougher sex, while Eric must overcome his fears of being unwanted and cast aside. He knows that trusting Bridge may be the key to his happy ever after, but getting in the saddle is much, much easier than learning to let it ride.

Review

This was my second LC Chase book and I absolutely loved it! I am not normally a western/cowboy type book lover, but there are a few where the setting is just perfect for the love story and this is one of those books.

This is a GFY (Gay for you)which is definitely one of my favorite tropes, so it was easy to love. But – you can make a GFY go really bad if you don’t convince me (the reader) that the guy “going gay” has really thought about it and made the amazingly difficult leap believable. LC does, and does it very well.

Bridge is a great character, sexy, funny, sweet, heart of gold. Everyone loves him and so did I. What I really appreciated about this guy was how LC showed us his thinking process from attraction to action. Though it was “insta love” it wasn’t “Insta involvement” or “Insta gay”. He was appropriately trepidacious about possibly losing not one but several friends, and he didn’t want to hurt anyone. I thought it was well done and insightful.

Eric is the hot paramedic with a sad past. I didn’t like his character nearly as much as Bridge. I wanted him to either fight the relationship harder in the beginning or less at the end. He seemed to give in to Bridge, and his “we’ll just be fuck buddies” never rang true to me. I felt like he was deluding himself in a way that was much less believable than Bridge’s conviction to be a gay man.

The glimpse of the characters from the first book (I’ll bet) is nice for those who have read it and I will definitely be reading the first one, thanks to this book. Obviously it was not necessary to have read the books in order to enjoy this one.

The sex was fantastic, the love story sweet, the angst tear producing.

All in all a great book.

I give it a 4.5 of 5 stars only because I wanted Eric’s character to be a little more consistent.

Ty Hard (Willow Spring Ranch Book 1) by Laura Harner

ty hardBlurb

Tyler has used Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell as a shield against the truth since he was seventeen. Cut loose from his Navy career and mourning his mentor’s death, Ty must come to terms with his desires for another man even while he fights to keep the PTSD from pulling him under.

Rancher Cass Cartwright’s relationships never last more than a few hours, and that’s just the way he likes it. Now he’s done the one thing he swore never to do: fallen in love. Can Cass convince Ty to let go of his past or will sabotage at the ranch kill their love before it has a chance to grow?

Review

Ty has lost a lot in this world, his family, his career, now somebody close by. But he has a place stay and a new job, with a super-hot boss, Cass.

Cass owns a ranch out in the boonies and doesn’t ever imagine he’ll have a partner. He finds his lovin’ in the next town – miles and miles away – to protect his heart and his sanity.

When a sweet matchmaker plops Ty in his lap, he can’t say no. He has to help, protect and love this new ranch cook – even if he has to convince Ty of that plan first.

**

This is a very sweet, sentimental, and sexy short story about two hot guys finding each other and filling the lonely spots in their hearts.

There is a bit of drama thrown in and some PTSD, but mostly it’s about them falling in love.

It’s a wonderful first book to a series and there are loads of interesting men at the ranch whose stories must be told!

I’ve never read this author before, but I’m a fan now!

My Haunted Blender’s Gay Love Affair and Other Twisted Tales by Abigail Roux, Andrea Speed, and Anne Tenino

MyHauntedBlender_500x750_0Die Laughing.

A collection of not-so-chilling tales of love and laughter from three of the genre’s masters of pulp.

Blurb for The Bone Orchard:

In The Bone Orchard, by Abigail Roux, Pinkerton investigator Ezra Johns and US Marshal Ambrose Shaw have a lot to learn about life—and the afterlife—in their quest to bring a vicious murderer to justice. Fortunately, they’ve got all the time in the world to figure it out.

Review:

Ambrose Shaw is after a serial killer in the old west when he gets shot and ends up haunting the spot where he died, trying to bring the killer to justice.

Ezra Johns follows Shaw to bring the killer to the gallows but then falls victim to the killer’s ghost.

In the time between the trial and his death, Ezra falls in love with Ambrose and then joins him in the afterlife, eternally fighting the ghost of the killer.

With a nice cross-over twist, we see some familiar faces as the relatives of Ezra facing danger and it’s up to Ezra and Ambrose to save them.

**
I loved this story. It was sweet and sentimental, funny and exciting, somewhat historical, a lot fantastical, and just a joy to read.

If you’re a fan of Abigail Roux you won’t want to miss this, nor will you if you love westerns and ghosts.

I give it a 4.5 of 5 dinging it a little only because I wanted a different ending for our boys. Was it still happy? Probably…depends on your way of thinking. ☺

Blurb for Horny

In Horny, by Anne Tenino, a group of supernatural law enforcers enlist the help of a human, Ryan Caulfield, to catch Zeus: the god voted Least Likely to Keep It in His Pants. But there’s more to Ryan than even he knows, and the satyr searching for Zeus is tempting him with far more than simple justice.

Review:

Ryan owns a bar in the middle of nowhere. One night a bunch of demigods shows up looking for Zeus. They set up a trap to catch him and stop him from selling erectile dysfunction potions. In the meantime a mysterious Oracular guides Ryan and Leander to become more than just a one-night stand and in fact shows Ryan that he may be more than just a barkeep.

**
Let me start by saying that in general I love Anne Tenino, have read most of her books and loved them. I started this story super psyched as a result. When I finished, I was left scratching my head.

The imagination is there. The characters are there. The plot is there. The execution… isn’t. I got confused by a lot and this is a short story.

I understood why Ryan was guarded and didn’t want to get involved with Leander, he was looking for permanence not a one-night-stand– but then when more of his history is revealed, it didn’t make sense, and his whole “too sensitive” thing never made sense.

Leander, who should have wanted that fast commitment and instant love, didn’t, and that didn’t make sense, given what we learn about his god house.

The other demigods’ characters were also a little confusing and I wasn’t sure there role in the story. They just muddied the water for me.

I think that this story would have come across better if the author had either edited it down more tightly, focusing on the main characters more, or elongated it to a full-length novel or long novella.

I give a 3.5 of 5 stars because it was funny and sweet and I really liked the idea, but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations of what this author can do.

Blurb for: In City of Monsters, by Andrea Speed

An ex-investigator turned some-kind-of-shifter (he doesn’t know, but with his luck, it’s probably nothing cool) is hired to find a missing reverse tooth fairy in the hellish dimension of Dev. But even simple things aren’t easy for a guy with more vices than virtues, and his situation gets even more complex when a hot newcomer to Dev with a taste for danger joins him on the case.

Review:

Hunter is an unknown were who meets up with a newbie unknown were (humans who are infected with magic by an animal, sent to another dimension, Dev, and live out there lives as the wereanimal they were infected by.) Neither Sakari nor Hunter know what they are, but they find out and it’s hysterical.

Hunter’s job is to find things, right now he’s finding a reverse tooth-fairy’s twin brother to pay off gambling debts to a werehippo mob boss.

**

This is a hysterical short story, mostly about the city itself and a teeny tiny bit about Hunter and Sakari. There is like, one sentence of romance, and the rest is just hilarious world-building and nonsense.

Though I enjoyed the unique and funny nature of this story, I wasn’t exactly sure why it was included in this anthology, unless it’s meant to be a pre-cursor to a new series or something.

I liked it for what it was and give it a 3 of 5 stars.

**
Overall, the anthology was pretty dang funny, there were some ridiculously sweet parts (Bone Orchard), interesting worlds (City and Horny) and very creative uses of appliances (City).

I give it a 3.5 of 5 stars and I would definitely recommend it.
