Best Friends by Cat Blaine

best friendsBlurb

Carrick and Malcolm have been best friends since they were kids. They do everything together. One night, after they’ve had a little too much to drink, they share a hot, sensual kiss that ends up going a lot further than either man expected.

After that night both men struggle with lusty feelings for one another. Malcolm tells Carrick he wants to try and have a real relationship with him. Carrick panics, terrified of other people’s opinions and the two friends have a falling out. Alone and missing his best buddy, Carrick must decide if being without Malcolm is more painful than anything his peers might say.

Review

Carrick and Malcolm are drunk one night… and horny. They kiss a bit… and some more, but the next day go back to being “buds”. Except… Carrick can’t forget what he and Mal did. He’s now jealous when he sees Mal out at the bar and he can’t quite come to grips with what that says about himself.

Mal (who we only know about through Carrick’s eyes) is also confused. He seems to want to keep their friendship but he keeps saying and doing things that make Carrick confused. What does he want?

**

This is a short but sexy, double GFY. Neither has any real experience with a guy before, but they know they’re attracted to the other. They’re best friends but in jobs where being out might be a problem.

First they have to work through their attraction them decide what to be in public. I enjoyed watching them navigate the physical and emotional side of their relationship. Though it was fast, it did try to be realistic.

I highly recommend this to fans of GFY, and best friends to lovers story lovers.

SignsofLifeLGBlurb

A Resilient Love Story

Successful lawyer Jeremy Speer has it all—a loving husband, a beautiful home, and a cherished dream that’s about to become reality. He’s learned not to take happiness for granted, meeting the challenges of life and love head-on with unwavering commitment and fierce devotion. A series of tragic events leave Jeremy shattered, adrift on a sea of unimaginable pain. He’s able to piece his life back together, but instead of embracing it, he merely exists, using isolation and punishing physical exertion to keep the world at bay.

High school teacher Kai Daniels has a heart for at-risk kids—he was one himself, and a teenage brush with the law and some troubled years behind bars left him scarred inside and out. With courage, hard work, and the support of friends, he’s built a fulfilling life that leaves no time for a relationship.

An intense encounter with Kai at a gay club ignites a spark in Jeremy that he thought was extinguished forever, but he’s unwilling to destroy the fragile peace he’s managed to create, and he leaves Kai humiliated and disappointed. Things should have ended there, but a bizarre occurrence brings the two together in a way neither of them expected.

Dirty Kiss (Book 1) Audiobook by Rhys Ford Narrated by Greg Tremblay

DirtyKissAudLGBlurb:

Cole Kenjiro McGinnis, ex-cop and PI, is trying to get over the shooting death of his lover when a supposedly routine investigation lands in his lap. Investigating the apparent suicide of a prominent Korean businessman’s son proves to be anything but ordinary, especially when it introduces Cole to the dead man’s handsome cousin, Kim Jae-Min.

Jae-Min’s cousin had a dirty little secret, the kind that Cole has been familiar with all his life and that Jae-Min is still hiding from his family. The investigation leads Cole from tasteful mansions to seedy lover s trysts to Dirty Kiss, the place where the rich and discreet go to indulge in desires their traditional-minded families would rather know nothing about.

It also leads Cole McGinnis into Jae-Min’s arms, and that could be a problem. The death of Jae-Min’s cousin is looking less and less like a suicide, and Jae-Min is looking more and more like a target. Cole has already lost one lover to violence he’s not about to lose Jae-Min too.

Review:

Cole was a police officer who lost his lover and his job to a murder.  (It’s way more complicated than that, but you’ll have to read/listen to the entire series to get the full extent of the story.  You don’t find out here, but you get dribbles and drabbles along the way, piquing your interest.)  He’s now a private investigator, on a job.  He meets Jae-Min at the house of one of the people he’s investigating and is instantly attracted.

Jae is Korean, he can’t be gay.  But he is.  That is a huge deal for him.  He’s attracted to Cole but he knows for the sake of his family he has to push him away.  Cole won’t let that happen.

The mystery in this book is: Jae’s cousin committed suicide – or did he?  There is a lot hidden in Korean society and it’s up to Cole to dig through all the secrets to find the truth.  Of course, in the meantime he gets hurt too, but he seems to have 9 lives – like Jae’s cat!

We get to meet most of the characters we will grow to love throughout the series including Cole’s brother Mike, his assistant Claudia, his BFF Bobby and Jae’s bestie Scarlet.  The mystery gets solved and the beginning of the romance between Jae and Cole begins.

Though the mystery takes up the bulk of the story, to me, the romance is the main thrust of this book and the entire series. Watching Jae-Min and Cole learn to be a couple is the best part of this series. The funny side characters (some of whom get their own stories later on) are an added bonus.

I loved this book and the entire series and also gave it a 5 of 5 stars.

Audio version:
This is a case where the audio version is so amazing as to sometimes surpasses the written word. Greg Tremblay totally gets what Rhys is writing and he “performs” the story, not just reading it.

There are times, and I have said this before, where you feel like you are listening at the door, or listening to a movie soundtrack, instead of a simple narration.

It is supremely excellent.

Each character has a distinct and unique voice, and Greg even has a great singing voice.

I give the audio version a 6 out of 5 stars because it is Rhys’ words performed so excellently by Greg that together, the combination surpasses the book as an experience.

Solo by Carol Lynne

soloBlurb

Sam “Solo” Braun lives by one truth, the Grave Diggers Motorcycle Club above all. The creed has served him well, giving him the only real family he’s ever known. He would die for his brothers and them for him, but they don’t know he prefers men over women. Coming out to a group of men who fear no one isn’t high on Solo’s priority list, especially because he’s never indulged in more than one night stands.

Everything changes after one night with Eric James. For the first time, Solo can’t stop thinking about a single night he’d spent with a man. When fate intervenes, Solo comes face to face with his blue-eyed obsession only to find out Eric is a cop. Solo hates cops, and so do his brothers in the club. However, Solo decides to gamble everything and spend more time with Eric under the guise of getting information.

Falling in love with a cop is a very dangerous proposition for a man in Solo’s position, so why can’t he walk away?

Review

Solo goes to a bar full of guys in polo shirts knowing he’ll get laid. Sure enough he makes eye contact with a super hot guy with denim blue eyes. He dubs the man “Blue” and they agree to go back to Blue’s house for the night.

The sex is off the charts but Solo doesn’t do relationships – being a motorcycle club means he can’t be gay.

Blue, who is really Eric the cop, never expects to see Solo again, so he’s shocked when he runs into the man while doing some undercover work. They agree to work together to solve a case involving kids and drugs, and while the case is being investigated they agree to a “relationship”.

The men can’t stay apart and feelings get involved. What will it take to keep these guys together when being gay could get Solo killed and neither man can be seen with the other “professionally”.

**

This is a fast read, not very long, but full of steam. Solo is rough around the edges but willing to be vulnerable. Blue is not the preppy guy Solo thinks and together they have more in common than not.

I loved the emotional connection these guys made and how gritty the story felt, it seemed more “realistic” to me.

If you like alpha males, gritty romance, motorcycles and “tough love”… this is for you.

(FWIW I loved the old cover!)

What Can Be by Mary Calmes

what can beBlurb

Thirteen years ago, Eli went on a summer trip with his mother and never came back. Now, existing in a new life as Jacob Somerville, he’s again running from fear and memories, only to end up where he started. As Jacob struggles to reconnect with his father and brothers, he realizes that his lover, Craig Zhao, was the only thing filling his empty heart and standing between him and ghosts of the past. It will take the power of love—from his family, from Craig, and from himself—for Jacob to see that his life truly is filled with the promise of what can be.

Review

Eli/Jake has a reason to go home, but he’s scared. He doesn’t know who he is now. He’s run all his life and now he can’t decide the next step, so he cuts all ties, even though he has a happy life and love in Chicago.

Craig won’t accept that Jake wants out. He knows Jake. Knows all his secrets. Knows he needs Craig’s help.

When Eli/Jake finally faces his family after 13 years of absence, there’s a chance he could lose it all, or finally be free.

**

This is a no-holds-barred emotional read. Eli’s past is harsh and the love that he shares with Craig is special.

It was hard reading about what happened, and so many times I was tempted to rush to the end to see what he’s hiding, but the way it’s laid out is perfect – of course – it’s Mary!

Craig and Eli/Jake are a wonderful couple and I wish we’d gotten more of their story – but I almost think it would have been even more painful to have it drawn out. Seeing this – the pinnacle moment – was hard enough.

“You look at me and I feel like I could do anything just because you love me. We fit so perfect. I mean, I just have to see you, and I know I’m home.”

I love all of Mary’s work, and this is one of her more dark stories, showing us her breadth of talent.

I highly recommend this and the author, in this case, especially if you are in the mood for a happy ending but a darker story.

My Haunted Blender’s Gay Love Affair and Other Twisted Tales by Abigail Roux, Andrea Speed, and Anne Tenino

MyHauntedBlender_500x750_0Die Laughing.

A collection of not-so-chilling tales of love and laughter from three of the genre’s masters of pulp.

Blurb for The Bone Orchard:

In The Bone Orchard, by Abigail Roux, Pinkerton investigator Ezra Johns and US Marshal Ambrose Shaw have a lot to learn about life—and the afterlife—in their quest to bring a vicious murderer to justice. Fortunately, they’ve got all the time in the world to figure it out.

Review:

Ambrose Shaw is after a serial killer in the old west when he gets shot and ends up haunting the spot where he died, trying to bring the killer to justice.

Ezra Johns follows Shaw to bring the killer to the gallows but then falls victim to the killer’s ghost.

In the time between the trial and his death, Ezra falls in love with Ambrose and then joins him in the afterlife, eternally fighting the ghost of the killer.

With a nice cross-over twist, we see some familiar faces as the relatives of Ezra facing danger and it’s up to Ezra and Ambrose to save them.

**
I loved this story. It was sweet and sentimental, funny and exciting, somewhat historical, a lot fantastical, and just a joy to read.

If you’re a fan of Abigail Roux you won’t want to miss this, nor will you if you love westerns and ghosts.

I give it a 4.5 of 5 dinging it a little only because I wanted a different ending for our boys. Was it still happy? Probably…depends on your way of thinking. ☺

Blurb for Horny

In Horny, by Anne Tenino, a group of supernatural law enforcers enlist the help of a human, Ryan Caulfield, to catch Zeus: the god voted Least Likely to Keep It in His Pants. But there’s more to Ryan than even he knows, and the satyr searching for Zeus is tempting him with far more than simple justice.

Review:

Ryan owns a bar in the middle of nowhere. One night a bunch of demigods shows up looking for Zeus. They set up a trap to catch him and stop him from selling erectile dysfunction potions. In the meantime a mysterious Oracular guides Ryan and Leander to become more than just a one-night stand and in fact shows Ryan that he may be more than just a barkeep.

**
Let me start by saying that in general I love Anne Tenino, have read most of her books and loved them. I started this story super psyched as a result. When I finished, I was left scratching my head.

The imagination is there. The characters are there. The plot is there. The execution… isn’t. I got confused by a lot and this is a short story.

I understood why Ryan was guarded and didn’t want to get involved with Leander, he was looking for permanence not a one-night-stand– but then when more of his history is revealed, it didn’t make sense, and his whole “too sensitive” thing never made sense.

Leander, who should have wanted that fast commitment and instant love, didn’t, and that didn’t make sense, given what we learn about his god house.

The other demigods’ characters were also a little confusing and I wasn’t sure there role in the story. They just muddied the water for me.

I think that this story would have come across better if the author had either edited it down more tightly, focusing on the main characters more, or elongated it to a full-length novel or long novella.

I give a 3.5 of 5 stars because it was funny and sweet and I really liked the idea, but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations of what this author can do.

Blurb for: In City of Monsters, by Andrea Speed

An ex-investigator turned some-kind-of-shifter (he doesn’t know, but with his luck, it’s probably nothing cool) is hired to find a missing reverse tooth fairy in the hellish dimension of Dev. But even simple things aren’t easy for a guy with more vices than virtues, and his situation gets even more complex when a hot newcomer to Dev with a taste for danger joins him on the case.

Review:

Hunter is an unknown were who meets up with a newbie unknown were (humans who are infected with magic by an animal, sent to another dimension, Dev, and live out there lives as the wereanimal they were infected by.) Neither Sakari nor Hunter know what they are, but they find out and it’s hysterical.

Hunter’s job is to find things, right now he’s finding a reverse tooth-fairy’s twin brother to pay off gambling debts to a werehippo mob boss.

**

This is a hysterical short story, mostly about the city itself and a teeny tiny bit about Hunter and Sakari. There is like, one sentence of romance, and the rest is just hilarious world-building and nonsense.

Though I enjoyed the unique and funny nature of this story, I wasn’t exactly sure why it was included in this anthology, unless it’s meant to be a pre-cursor to a new series or something.

I liked it for what it was and give it a 3 of 5 stars.

**
Overall, the anthology was pretty dang funny, there were some ridiculously sweet parts (Bone Orchard), interesting worlds (City and Horny) and very creative uses of appliances (City).

I give it a 3.5 of 5 stars and I would definitely recommend it.

Again by Mary Calmes

againBlurb

Six years ago, Noah Wheeler went to meet his boyfriend, Dante Cerreto, at the airport, and his world ended. Dante was kissing someone else and claimed to be in love. So Noah took his heartbreak-and the sonogram pictures of their surrogate child-and closed the door on the big picture of what he thought his life would be, focusing instead on the piece of the dream he got to keep, being a father.
Now on vacation in Las Vegas, Noah accidentally runs into the Cerreto family, and then the man himself, and learns that not only was he deceived, but Dante was as well. Now Dante wants to make up for lost time, six years’ worth, and to do that he needs Noah, the only man he’s ever loved, and Grace, the daughter he didn’t know he had, to give him a chance at happiness. Dante’s going to have to take a crash course in communication and seduction, though. Noah’s not going to fall in love just to be broken again.

Review

Noah went to the airport to surprise his boyfriend Dante with a sonogram of his child only to find Dante in a clench with his work partner. When confronted Dante tells Noah he wants out of the relationship and that he’s fallen in love with someone else.

Though Noah is crushed he does what he can to share with Dante their child, but to no avail. It isn’t until 6 years have passed that they cross paths only to find out that things aren’t what everyone originally thought.

**

This is a short story, only 96 pages, so much of it happens in a re-telling and the only “real time” is a matter of hours.

As usual I loved the characters. Noah is the perfect guy who did everything “right” but with all the wrong information.

Dante, you think is all bad, isn’t at all… but he still screwed up, and how! But… he’s the alpha guy who makes your eyeballs melt and nobody can just let that get away.

Dante’s family is also perfect and helps to smooth everything over. Noah’s current “boyfriend” is perfectly stupid and manages to do just the right thing so that nobody feels bad about what happens to him.

Most of this is typical Mary wonderfulness and I loved it. What I didn’t love was the brevity and what it did to the story. Instead of having our MCs work out something realistic (Mary does like to split her guys up – for years!) they end up making up in less than 48 hours and it felt really forced. I just hadn’t gotten to the point where I was able to buy into them getting back because Dante hadn’t done enough to earn his right to be back in Noah’s life.

It was close… but I couldn’t quite feel good about it.

So though it pains me to do so, I must give this a 3 of 5 stars. Great for Mary fans, but those less forgiving might not like this title as much.

Always the Prefect Moment (Perefct Moments Book 2) by K-Lee Klein

always the perfect momentBlurb

“Confessing your love is only the first step to starting your lives together.”

Bryan Monroe took a chance when he told Chrys Delos, his best friend and partner on the police force, that he loved him, but he never thought he’d get so lucky when Chrys returned the feelings. Now, although he and Chrys are over-the-moon happy, Bryan wants to take their relationship to the next level in two big ways.

Chrys has healed nicely from the gunshot wound that could have cost him his life. But now that it’s time for him to return to work, he and his partner-turned-lover must navigate their new relationship on the job.

It’s one thing to clearly define the love they feel for each other, but it could be an entirely new challenge when they tell their friends and family about the change in their partnership…

Review

We met Bryan and Chrys in book 1, when the friends and partners on the police force who end up as romantic partners as well.

In book 2 we see them begin life as a couple. The “where should we live?” the “who should we tell?” the “what about our jobs?” and the “who f*cks who?” all gets answered.

It’s a very nice sequel to a very nice story. I love when we get to see beyond the “HEA” and delve in to the practicalities of things. It wasn’t belabored (mostly because they had only just begun to be in a relationship in book 1) and the smexy times and feels were super sweet.

If you enjoyed book 1, I highly recommend book 2 and if you haven’t read either, give them a go – it’s a nice take on the GFY/OFY storyline.

Sheriff Scott Dupree’s got more problems than he can handle. He’s alpha of his small werewolf pack and coming up for re-election as sheriff in a year. On top of this, his mother is casting love spells to find Scott a mate. It’s all Scott can do to keep the town and pack under control, let alone his urges to mate.

Ted Canedo is openly gay, a disgraced ex-cop from New Orleans. His patrol partner was killed on duty and Ted took the blame for taking protection money from the store owner to save his partner’s wife and kids grief. No one knew Ted was in love with his partner, not even his partner. Having him die in Ted’s arms killed something inside Ted too.

When the moon is full and Scott’s momma works her magic, Ted’s erotic dreams and his work as a PI bring him to St. Jerome and sexy, straight Scott. Scott’s stunned to learn his wolf is gay and wants to mate with Ted. Ted refuses to become involved with a straight man, much less a werewolf, terrified to risk his heart again.

Especially if it he has to watch Scott fight to the death for his right to claim Ted as his mate.

Review

Scott has a crazy mama who fancies herself a witch. She puts together some voodoo to try to find Scott a mate. Well – he finds one alright, but it’s a guy! Ooops!

Ted is gay and has no problem being so. He’s got personal problems that force him to move into Scott’s town. When the two meet there’s that instant mate chemistry which Scott does everything to shut down.

What happens next is the two men fighting their attraction and finally succumbing all the while dealing with mysterious events in St Jerome and trying to keep Scott’s mama from making things worse!

**

This was a totally fun, very sexy, “believable” GFY shifter book. I loved the heck out of it and it’s definitely the favorite in this series, though the others are great reads, too.

Scott’s mama is a hoot and the smexy times are scorching!

I highly recommend this to fans of shifters and especially “straight to gay” shifters.

Never the Perfect Moment (Perfect Moments Book 1) By K-lee Klein

never momentBlurb
Bryan Monroe has always catalogued his life in terms of moments—right moments, wrong moments, perfect moments. But when his best friend and partner on the police force, Chrys Delos, is shot in a raid gone bad, it’s one of the worst moments of Bryan’s life.

Bryan’s been secretly in love with Chrys for years, and the shooting is a wake-up call that it might be time to tell Chrys the truth. The problem is, Bryan’s never been with a man before, so in addition to worrying about Chrys’ injuries, he’s an indecisive wreck over the future.

But with the help of two unlikely matchmakers, Bryan knows it’s time to find the courage, and the perfect moment, to tell Chrys exactly how he feels…

Review

This is a very short book (1000 locations or so) that tells the sweet story of a pair of cops who fall in love. Bryan realizes his love when his partner Chrys is shot trying to protect Bryan.

It’s a GFY, Bryan is a divorced dad who still lives next to his BFF ex-wife.

There isn’t much (if any) angst. We enter the story with Bryan realizes he’s in love but not knowing how to tell Chrys how he feels and we leave the story… pretty much after he tells him.

There is a lot of sweetness in between beginning and end but there isn’t much story.

I liked the premise a lot and the characters had potential but it was not realized fully. I really wanted to see how Bryan handled the physical side of the story, but that, too, was brief.

Instead of spending a lot of time on the waffling about how to tell his buddy how he feels, I wish we’d had more time exploring their relationship with one another.

K-lee gave us a tantalizingly brief glimpse into these characters, even giving us well-developed secondary characters like Chrys’ dad and Bryan’s ex-wife, but not much story.

I liked it a lot, but wished there was more. (And now that I know there’s a sequel – I’m stoked!)

I give it 4 of 5 stars
