Mike & Alexei are back, and they’re hotter than ever.

After four years with Alexei, there are a few things Mike knows with absolute certainty: he loves Alexei, Alexei loves him, and Alexei gives the very best gifts. This Christmas is no exception, though Mike is having a hell of a time figuring out what, exactly, Alexei’s gift is.

Alexei knows his gift this year is going to blow Mike’s mind, but in the meantime, it’s pretty hilarious watching Mike try to figure out what it is. Granted, Alexei does have a lot of surprises in store for Mike this week, and it sure as hell isn’t frankincense and myrrh.

Review

We met Mike and Alexi in Crashing the Net (reviewed here http://kimichanexperience.com/crashing-the-net-by-samantha-wayland/). Mike is a bit younger than Alexi and submissive. They’re both in the closet and playing professional hockey. We met their neighbors and the teams manager in Home and Away (reviewed here http://kimichanexperience.com/home-and-away-by-samantha-wayland/) . This is an epilogue for both those stories.

Mike and Alexi get a Christmas they won’t forget as do Rupert and Callum.

I just love both these couples. They’re so different but share a lot of the same qualities. The smexy times are seriously off the charts in this one and the feels are huge, too.

I highly recommend this to fans of the series – you won’t want to miss this one!

Avery Hextall, a junior architect at a prestigious firm, is thrilled when his design is chosen for a new performing-arts center—even if it means working closely with his insufferably uptight project manager, Malin Lacroix. When a chance encounter in the boss’s office proves that Lacroix is anything but cold, Avery is determined to learn more about the real man beneath the aloof veneer.

Despite their growing attraction and their increasingly kinky encounters, the enigmatic Malin remains as emotionally distant as ever. Worse, Avery’s friends are convinced Malin thinks of Avery as a dirty secret and nothing more—a secret that might destroy both of their careers.

But the real secret is a single moment in time that haunts Malin and keeps him from committing to the life he wants with Avery. In order to move on, Avery must help Malin come to terms with the tragedy in his past before they can work on building a future together.

Review

Avery is a young, hyper, strange and funny architect who has recently graduated and is working under the very proper and uptight Malin. Avery is convinced Malin has something against him personally when none of his “obviously” wonderful designs are chosen. So… he goes in to give the boss a piece of his mind. What ends up happening is … well… he starts to fall for the boss. Even though he hates him. Sort of.

Malin is a recently divorced man who sort of hates the world and himself in it. He has a tragic past that clouds his future and no good way to deal with it. When the crazy bastard Avery barges his way into his life he doesn’t know what the fuck to make of it. But… he finds himself entranced. Avery brightens his world. Avery makes him crazy but he also kind of likes him. Sort of.

Avery has a thing for pain and Malin has a thing for giving pain. So that works.

They both like architecture and design and are very socially awkward. So that works.

But Malin’s never been gay. But Avery is bi so… that works?

In the end Malin and Avery will have to traverse a lot of ground. Some of it very rocky and emotional. But both are so good for the other, except when they’re not… in the end we get a very HEA.

**

My first thought as I was reading this was “This is her first book?????”  This is WAY TOO GOOD to be her first book! Now… I don’t know if she’s hiding others somewhere else, or maybe she wrote het romance or something, but these books of hers (this and Breakaway) are absolutely amazing! They are witty and well thought out and the timing is excellent. Her characters are so flawed and yet sparkling and crisp.

I’m not into the sex stuff they were … I don’t get it… but I didn’t need to. I saw that they were into it and since it worked for them, it worked for me. That’s a sign of a good author. She made the kinky stuff work for me because I saw that it did what it needed to for our MCs and that was enough.

I loved the windows and light analogy and the metaphors with the building designs. Wonderful!

I’m torn because I don’t know if I love Avery or Malin more. My heart bleeds for Malin – he’s so broken and needy. But Avery was such a bratty brat. Well, luckily I don’t have to choose. They’re both wonderful and so is this book. It’s funny and sweet and you’ll be happy you read it.

Buy it.

That is all.

Surrender the Chase (grizzly rim book 2) by Mia West

surrender the chaseBlurb

For wolf shifter Dmitri Sernov, life bites. His late-night hunts leave him winded, the twelfth rewrite of his novel is crap, and his last good lay was five drafts ago. He’s staring down forty with a creative well as empty as his bed. The last thing he needs is a beautiful, intimidating, obnoxious pup bent on exposing Dmitri’s underbelly… and everything else that’s gone soft.

Thierry Marrou has burned every bridge from Montréal to Juneau. Once a prospect for Canada’s Olympic hockey team, he’s just been kicked off a piddling local squad in Nowhere, Alaska. But one whiff of the silver wolf on the opposing bench was enough to confirm that the erotic dreams drawing Thierry across a continent have a very real—and very cranky—source.

Review

In book one we met this amazing little town in Alaska where some unique shifters and a few humans live. Dmitri is a wolf shifter with a reputation as a slut, but conversely he’s a bit of a lone-wolf, too. He’s older, a bit gruff, and if you get to know him, a lot insecure.

Thierry is a flighty, flirty, fast-playing hockey player who finds himself “compelled” by dreams to find a man, Dmitri. He trusts his gut above all else and his gut tells him he needs to meet Dmitri, but it doesn’t tell him what to do next.
At first, beyond the initial attraction, there is doubt on both sides. Dmitri can’t trust that this beautiful, young, stranger has been having dreams about him. Thierry is also not sure what to make of these dreams and though he finds Dmitri fascinating and sexy he doesn’t know if he can make himself stay put when clearly Dmitri is a stay-put kind of guy.

Mia is an amazing author! I absolutely adore this series! I reviewed the first book, Launch the Hunt here: http://kimichanexperience.com/launch-the-hunt-grizzly-rim-1-by-mia-west/

I couldn’t wait for book two and it was worth the wait!

Mia’s writing is so fluid and effortless (though I’m sure she’d say it takes work, if Dmitri is any example!) that the reading of this story is so easy. I was expecting a story similar to book one and got none of that, but it was not a disappointment at all. Dmitri and Thierry have a very different story to tell. They still have that element of magic that connects them, but at their core they have this very human relationship story first.

Dmitri is getting older and doubting his attractiveness and purpose in the world. Thierry is still young, but also has questions about his purpose and future. I LOVED that both Dmitri and Thierry called Thierry’s mom for advice! So. Funny! Her little side story is interesting in it’s own right and I’m wondering/hoping she becomes a continual secondary character.

The use of French and Thierry’s adamant, “I’m not French I’m Quebecois!” was wonderful. So beautiful and touching then funny and heart-warming at the same time.

My heart absolutely ached for both of these guys and I’m always impressed with shifter stories who use the animal part as much as the human part to create their characters and their motivations. It was hysterical that Thierry’s mom asked him about his fur and skin and was he hunting enough! So cute!

The smexy times are very sensuous but also REAL feeling and authentic. Dmitri is older and nervous and that shows!

I can’t wait for book 3, I loved this as much as book 1 and can’t recommend it enough.

Bully and Exit (Midwest Series book 1) by Brigham Vaughn

bully exitBlurb

Theater student Caleb Stockwell is ready to leave college behind. Too bad his past isn’t ready to let him go.

With less than a month to go until graduation, Caleb runs into Nathan Rhodes at a house party. Nathan is a star hockey player for Western Michigan University and finally ready to step out of the closet. He’s also the guy who broke Caleb’s heart in high school.

Nathan’s determined to make amends for what he did four years ago, but Caleb isn’t willing to risk getting his heart stomped on again. With only a few weeks left before they go their separate ways, it’ll take all of Nathan’s creativity and help from some interfering friends to convince Caleb to give him a second chance.

Review

Caleb and Nate met in their senior year of high school. Caleb wasn’t sure of his sexual orientation, but he knew he was sometimes attracted to guys and girls. Nate was pretty sure he was gay, but was in no way prepared to act upon his desires.

When Caleb catches Nate’s eye, they begin a hidden affair – mostly innocent – that ends in disaster on Prom night.

Now, it’s four years later and though they’ve been at the same university, they’ve not met up again. Until now. It’s one month before graduation and when Nate sees Caleb at a party he just knows he has to do what he can to both let Caleb know how much he’s changed, how sorry he is and how much he’d like to start over again.

Caleb has been carrying around a lot of pain and anger from the incident in high school and can’t let it go. With the urging of his friends and family and a relentless pursuit by Nate, he finally agrees to sit down and hear Nate’s side of the story.

In the end we get a very solid HFN that looks promising and a very satisfying end to the pursuit.

**

I really liked this book. I was worried because I don’t like “second chance loves” as a general rule. (For me that first meet is what really pushes my buttons) but in a way we get that too as a series of flashbacks into the boy’s high school life.

There is lots of talk of sex and some uncomfortable discussions of past lovers, but only one real sex scene between the MCs. So, to me, this reads as just barely a NA book and almost a YA book.

I appreciated, however, that the reactions of both guys felt pretty authentic and age-appropriate.

If you are a fan of second chances, college romance and geek/jock pairings – give this one a try!

Burning up the Ice (International Men of Sports Book 5) by TA Chase and Devon Rhodes

burning up the iceBlurb

Book Five in the International Men of Sports

Two men, two very different sports and one rink—sharing ice has never been so hot.

Olivier ‘Big Bang’ St Pierre is back in his hometown while he recovers from being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hockey’s a contact sport—still, he didn’t count on the locker room being dangerous. As a professional hockey player, he also didn’t count on it being hard to find ice time. But when a rink shuts down unexpectedly in a winter-sport-crazy town, even being a big name won’t help as people scramble for whatever they can get.

The first time Ethan Campbell hears from the local hockey legend he knew as a kid, Olivier manages to insult both his family’s rink and his new sport—curling. So he’s not exactly receptive when Olivier shows up in person to plead his case. He makes a sarcastic offer…and is shocked when Olivier takes him up on it. Ethan’s bad experience with hockey had left him cold. But soon he and Olivier are burning up the ice.

Ethan is tied to his town, job and family, while Olivier will be going back to Chicago to rejoin his team as soon as he’s able. It can’t possibly last…can it?

Review

Olivier is “out” but not necessarily vocal about it as he’s a professional hockey player. He gets injured and returns home to heal. When the normal rink has problems he turns to a smaller, family owned rink to practice. He finds Ethan there, a guy he knew as a kid, and a wall of resentment.

Ethan is too small to play pro hockey, but he’s got mad skills. He turns to curling for an outlet, but is often ridiculed by the hockey players he envies. When Olivier does the same, he hits him with attitude.

But over time the two come to find that they actually have something special to share if they let the other in.

**

So… Olivier is quite cute and Ethan is sad about not being able to play hockey and they have great sex but where is the relationship and where is it going? I never really felt the connection between these two beyond the physical. I just didn’t “see” their connection.

I thought the Zamboni sex was hot, but it felt awkward that they couple didn’t ever go on dates or even have sex on a bed til the end.

Olivier was a super neat character – an astrophysisist hockey player and I wished we’d had more interactions with him and Ethan as a couple – taking advantage of that uniqueness that seemed to be just something to say rather than a real aspect of his personality.

I didn’t know anything about curling and got to learn something new, so that was nice, but again it felt like everything was just kinda put out there to “be unique” and not something integral to the characters.

The writing and editing were fine but I didn’t really get a great feeling about these guys as a couple and didn’t even understand where they ended up by the end of the book. Are they moving in together? Doing the long distance thing? They just sort of hinted at things in the future which was very unsatisfying.

I’ve enjoyed TA Chase in the past and I’ll definitely given Devon Rhodes another shot, but I was underwhelmed by this effort.
