Blurb

Queeny cocktail waiter Lionel wakes up to find himself in bed with Dog, a straight-acting softball player, and the two embark on a rocky road to romance. A journey that requires coming out of the closet, going into the closet, a pair of red high heels, many pairs of red high heels, a failed intervention, a couple of aborted dates, and homemade pom-poms. Mostly, Lionel and Dog learn what it means to be a man.

Review
I’ve never read (listened to) any books by Marshall Thornton before and I have been missing out. I didn’t know what to expect, the blurb sounded interesting and I am so happy I got to listen to it. This book is so much fun. Lionel is a wonderful strong character, so sarcastic and funny with brilliant one liners. The way he deals with inept Doug (Dog) is marvellous. The dates they almost go on had me glued with anticipation because I just couldn’t see how Dog and Lionel were going to get anywhere. But they do make it in the end. Masterful writing to give us such a fun book with the sub text of believing in yourself and being true to yourself and don’t give in to stereotypes.

The story switches between Lionel and Dog’s points of view so we get the whole picture. I have to say Joel Leslie’s narration is superb. He brings such an energy to the story. The voices chosen for Lionel and Doug suit them so well I can visualise them. The secondary characters also shine. My favourites are Lionel’s friend Carlos (Carlotta) and Dog’s Sister Madison, they are so amusing.

This has everything I want in an audiobook, great story and brilliant narration. I highly recommend it.

Tucker Wilde’s life is in a tailspin. Twenty-four hours ago, he was one of the top second basemen in the all-shifter professional baseball league. Now, he’s lost his starting spot to a rookie, been dumped by his girlfriend, and had a night of explosive passion with a man—a teammate at that. He can’t get Dixon out of his mind—even though Tucker still believes himself to be straight. With his career in jeopardy, he’s unsure where to turn or how to fix the mess.
Dixon Foxx is a baseball prodigy, though a perfectionist father stole any joy he might find in the game. He only sticks with it because it’s all he knows—and because of Tucker, the man Dixon’s wanted since they met. His dreams come true one night, only to turn into a nightmare the next morning when Tucker blows off their incredible time together as a drunken mistake, never to happen again.
The life of a switch hitter is all about mixing things up. Tucker excels at it. Only this time, the game isn’t on the line—his heart is.

Review

This is a book in a series about an all shifter professional baseball league. I think to really, really love this – you’d have to love baseball, too.

On the one hand the shifter stuff is immensely cute – they have some characteristics from their animals while as human – which I love! – and they are unique shifters – not just wolves- which I also love!

On the other hand they don’t shift a lot and they don’t have that hard core “mine” immediate mate pull that I adore in shifter books.

There is a lot of humor and sex in these stories and this is no different. I think maybe there was even more sex in this one? It felt like the main way (outside of baseball) the two MCs connected.

Baseball is also prominent in the story – so – if you’re a fan – I think this will really tick some boxes for you.

While I really enjoyed the character of Dixon – he was fun and funny, I never warmed to Tucker as much. He wasn’t a great friend and only later became a decent lover/partner.

Besides the sex and baseball we have a bit of prejudice and a bit of a career crises to deal with, but this is a low angst book for the most part.

All in all this is a fairly low angst, GFY, baseball story that I think fans of the author, the sport and shifters will all find something to enjoy.

Another Dumb Jock (Book 2) Audiobook by Jeff Erno narr Ezekiel Robison

Blurb

Jeff Irwin and Brett Willson raised a fine son, Adam, in their unconventional, judgment-free family. But being the son of two dads has its challenges. Although Adam loves them, he’s determined to prove he’s not gay, like they are. To this end, he’s become the star pitcher of his high school baseball team, a true jock.
Then Adam is suspended after he gets into a fight at school, and his dads find out his grades are slipping. Determined to put him back on track, they hire him a tutor: a short, nerdy kid named Trevor. Despite his resistance, soon enough Adam’s worst nightmare comes true when he finds himself attracted to Trevor. This gives him a choice: follow his heart or become just another dumb jock.

Review
(Book 1 reviewed here: http://kimichanexperience.com/dumb-jock-1-audiobook-by-jeff-erno-narrated-by-tommy-obrien/)
I liked this a bit more than I liked book one. First, I thought it was great that Jeff and Brett spent time and really thought out the implications of raising kids. I think all couples should do that – not just gay people! I loved that they had a plan and a way to handle sexuality as an issue – no matter which way it fell. (Wouldn’t that be great for all parents to do?!)
I thought Adam and Trevor were ridiculously sweet with one another and the fact that Adam is like Brett and Jeff is like Trevor – but NOT – was a nice take on the jock/nerd story. This wasn’t a repeat of book one – 20 years later. Adam and Trevor are different people and their struggles are different in a much, much different time.
The sensuality felt appropriate for the YA title – most of it was off page and only discussed a bit.
I liked this as a YA story but I’ll be honest – I’m not a YA fan (in general) so I would have probably skipped this if not for the narrator. I absolutely love Ezekiel Robison and I had enjoyed the first book and I KNEW with Ezekiel as narrator it would be great and … it was!
Ezekiel has a way of just drawing you into the story. He’s easy to listen to and he does a great job of differentiating every character without going over the top. He absolutely added to my overall enjoyment of this story and I was happy to have chosen it based on his narration alone.

For the story I’d give this a 4 of 5 stars, for the narration 5 of 5, overall 4.5 of 5 stars

Seventeen-year-old Connor works his butt off to maintain the golden-boy persona he’s created. He has the grades, the extracurriculars, the athletics, and a part-time job at his dad’s shop… every detail specifically chosen to ensure the college scholarships he needs to get the hell out of the Podunk town where he lives. The last thing he needs is an unexpected attraction to Graham, an eyeliner-wearing soccer phenom from St. Louis, who makes him question his goals and his sexuality. Sure, he’s noticed good-looking boys before—that doesn’t have to mean anything, right?—but he’s got a girlfriend. There’s no room on the agenda for hooking up with Graham, but the heart doesn’t always follow the rules.

As he and Graham grow close, other aspects of Connor’s life fall apart. Family pressure, bad luck, and rumors threaten to derail his carefully laid plans. Suddenly the future he’s fighting for doesn’t seem quite as alluring, especially if he has to deny who he really is to achieve it.

Review

This is a surprisingly sweet and sometimes emotional YA story about two guys in a rural town who find hope and love with each other. It doesn’t pretend to predict the future or even hint that these guys make it past graduation as a couple, and for that I applaud the author while at the same time my romantic soul weeps a bit.

I found the slow burn way that Connor moved into acceptance of his newfound “gayness” to be authentic and I thought Graham’s story was really, really powerful.

I thought the “steam” was appropriate for this audience (virtually no steam) and the drama was kept to a respectable amount (outside of Graham’s story, which was so, very sad.)

I enjoyed the secondary characters and really, really loved Graham. I hope we see these guys in a future work, but I’ve no idea if this is a series or a one-off.

Highly recommended for YA fans, but if you’re looking for something more “adult” keep looking.  I think Connor’s journey took a front seat to the romance, but it was an important story to tell.

Reading the Signs by Keira Andrews

32184585Blurb

This hot-headed rookie needs discipline—on and off the field.

Pitcher Nico Agresta is desperate to live up to his family’s baseball legacy. Since he was a teenager crushing on his big brother’s teammate, he’s known he can’t act on his desires. His father made it clear there should be no queers on the field, but if Nico can win Rookie of the Year like his dad and brother did, maybe he can prove he’s worthy after all.

At 34, veteran catcher Jake Fitzgerald just wants to finish out his contract and retire. His team doesn’t have a prayer of making the playoffs, but who needs the stress? Jake lost his passion for the game—and life—after driving away the man he loved, and he swore he’d never risk his heart again.

Then he’s traded to a team that wants a vet behind the plate to tame their new star pitcher. Jake is shocked to find the gangly kid he once knew has grown into a gorgeous young man. But tightly wound Nico is having trouble controlling his temper in his quest for perfection, and Jake needs to teach him patience and restraint on the mound.

When their push and pull explodes into the bedroom, Nico and Jake will both learn how much they’ll risk for love.

This gay sports romance features men who have been repressing their feelings far too long, light BDSM, an age difference, sweaty locker rooms, and a happy ending.

Review

So when I read the blurb for this my first thought was “Huh. A gay version of “Bull Durham”!” Well… it’s not exactly the same as the 80s movie – not really. But there were some comparisons. I liked how Jake takes care of Nico and steps in both personally and professionally to help him with his “baggage”.

The BDSM was VERY light, so if you’re worried about that, I wouldn’t be too concerned. I’m very uncomfortable with most BDSM and this wasn’t bad at all.

I thought the progression from “bi-curious” to “I’m gay” to “I’m out” was a little far-fetched. I know – it’s fiction. But poor Nico has been carrying around some awfully heavy luggage for a long time. His family hates him. He killed his mom. He’s bad. He’s wrong. There’s no “gay” in baseball. Etc. So he uncovers a TON of new “truths” and seems to move really quickly through a LOT of emotional stuff. I think that maybe having him either take longer to address some of these things or giving him a few less “issues” would have felt more appropriate.

I also felt like Jake was a little too “zen” and could have used some more emotion to help balance him out.

I’m not a baseball fan so I kinda skimmed all that stuff, but I found this story, for the most part, to be pretty good. It was relatively low angst, sweet, and sexy. In the end the family and the MCs do all the “right” things and except for poor Jake, everyone gets a perfect HEA.

Reviews

In Another Life

Without revealing what happens… Shiloh is shown at 18 and 36 … then again at 18 and 36. He gets “shown” a couple different variations of how his life “could” be and we are left when he finally figures it out right! Travis is his savior and whom he saves and finds true love with in the end.

It’s a bit like a morbid, gay, choose your own adventure and it has some funny lines, a bit of hot smexy times, and a very sweet HEA. This is an unusual story and though it’s short, tells a lot. There are a lot of plot inconsistencies without explanations, but overall it’s a very sweet holiday story that, like all of Cardeno’s works, is delightfully ooey, gooey, sweet and tender.

John Solo does the narration for this and he does a nice job – especially with all the coughing! He doesn’t use any accents or do anything OTT, just delivers a nice narrative.

For the story and the narration 3.5 of 5 stars

Eight Days

Maccabe is the nerd and Josh the jock. They hook up in college but when Maccabe wants to come out and Josh doesn’t, they split for years. It takes Hanukah to bring them back together.

On the one hand I loved Josh’s explanation about who he is and why he didn’t want to come out – it’s unique. But I didn’t really understand why he’d let things go as long as he did. Then when he comes back in to Josh’s life, Josh doesn’t really offer up much of a protest, despite all the time gone by.

It’s another lovely holiday story with a bit of hot smexy times and some very sweet Cardeno lovin’.

Nick J Russo did a great job with all the unique words and his voice for Josh felt very authentic. I love his narrations as he’s so easy to listen to and he has a way of really bringing the listener into the story.

I liked this story best of the two and give it and the narration a 4.25 of 5 stars

I think anyone in the mood for a short, sweet, sexy, holiday story will love these and I recommend them highly.

the-boy-next-doorBlurb

Life is full of surprises and, with luck, second chances.

After his father’s death, Lowell leaves the big city to help his sick mother in the conservative small town where he grew up. He’s shocked to find himself living next to none other than his childhood friend Jase. Lowell always had a crush on Jase, and the man has only gotten more attractive with age. Unfortunately Jase is straight, now divorced, and raising his six-year-old daughter. It’s nice to reconnect, but Lowell doesn’t see a chance for anything beyond friendship.

Until a night out together changes everything.

Jase can’t fight his growing feelings for Lowell, and he doesn’t want to give up the happy future they could have. But his ex-wife issues an ultimatum: he must keep his homosexuality secret or she’ll revoke his custody of their daughter, Layla. Now Jase faces an impossible choice: Lowell and the love he’s always wanted, or his daughter.

1st Edition published by Loose Id LLC, 2011.

Review

From the blurb we know that Jase is in the closet (at least to the world and as it turns out NOT to himself.) Lowell has been out and proud since high school and that was the main reason for the two boys to lose touch with one another. Jase, the jock, couldn’t handle his feelings for another boy.

Now Jase is divorced, but forced to stay in the closet or risk losing his daughter to his evil ex. Lowell wants to be with Jase, but can’t be forced into a secret relationship.

Jase has to decide – seemingly – between his daughter or his love.

**

Most of the story hinges on the reader resonating with the characters. Though there is the sub plot with the ex and Lowell has some angst with his mother, most of this is the two men finding one another and building on their mutual attraction.

My problem is that for the vast majority of the book I didn’t like Jase. He admits he’s a coward and he treats Lowell like crap. I also wasn’t sure why the ex-wife- who clearly shouldn’t ever be allowed to be alone with her own daughter – could possibly represent a viable threat to custody. Any judge – even in 2011 – would have to side on Jase’s side as she was clearly a nut job.

So my first dislike of Jase was picking that woman for a wife, then supporting her crazy antics for so long and then finally for not recognizing how much he was hurting Lowell. It made it hard for me too root for their relationship and thus I wasn’t terribly invested in this story.

I wasn’t ever invested in the subplots either – beyond hoping the ex-wife got out of the picture quickly – and so when the story diverged to those parts of the story – without seeming to add much to the overall story arc – I got annoyed and pulled from the story too much.

If you’re a fan of the author, you like reunion stories and coming out stories – this might be for you. It just didn’t resonate with me, though the writing was fine and I didn’t find editing errors.

2nd Edition

Matt Blanco is a legend on the Brooklyn Eagles, but time and injuries have taken their toll. With his career nearing its end, he’s almost made it to retirement without anyone learning his biggest secret: he’s gay in a profession not particularly known for its tolerance.

Iggy Rodriquez is the hot new rookie in town, landing a position in the starting lineup of the team of his dreams and playing alongside his idol, Matt Blanco. Iggy doesn’t think it can get any better, until an unexpected encounter in the locker room with Matt proves him wrong.

A relationship—and everything it could reveal—has never been in the cards for Matt, but Iggy has him rethinking his priorities. They fall hard for each other, struggling to make it through trades, endorsement deals, and the threat of retirement. Ultimately they will be faced with a choice: love or baseball?

First Edition published by Loose Id LLC, 2012.

Review

Matt is the veteran ball player that Iggy looked up to when he was starting his own baseball career. He’s everything he’d hope to be one day, so it’s with awe and amazement that he realizes they’ll be playing on the same team – he’s even more shocked to find out that “they’ll be playing on the same team” * wink wink

The attraction between these guys is instantaneous and they both realize the other is hiding their sexuality right away. The problem is what to do about their attraction. They both know that baseball will never accept them as out and proud gay men, so they must continue to hide.

In addition, Matt’s knee is bothering him more than he’s willing to admit and he’s worried about his career and life prospects after baseball. Even if they do hook up, why would a rookie – new to the career- want anything to do with an old guy like Matt?

**

This was a VERY low angst book. Though it’s definitely a romance and the relationship between Iggy and Matt plays a central role, I almost felt like their part of the story was anti-climactic. For me, the most compelling piece was Matt’s thought processes, his vision of himself, his decisions on whether or not to come out and why… these were the more compelling bits of the story.

Sure, the smexy times were pretty hot but I didn’t get a great many “feels” for these guys. They say the right words and I know they mean it, but the time spent in Matt’s head is really more about the baseball than his relationship with Iggy (though it’s clearly vital to him and the story) and so that’s what drew me in.

I enjoyed this very much and read it in one long afternoon because it was so compelling, I just wasn’t “wowed” by the romance.

Highly recommended to fans of baseball and to anyone looking for a low-angst love story with two hot athletes!

Polar bear shifter Graham Tundra can’t believe his bad luck. Not only is he traded to another baseball team midseason, but he’s also teamed up with Trigger Mallow: widely considered the best player in the game—but with the worst attitude.

Trigger is on the fence about Graham. As a grizzly bear shifter, he’s relieved to have another ursine on the team, even if they are different species. The problem is Trigger is in the middle of his natural mating season, and Graham looks too damn good to pass up.

What begins as friends with benefits shows potential to grow into a deeper connection. If only they can put aside their differences, learn to trust, listen to their feelings, and realize it’s more than just a bear thing.

Review

This is an “enemies to lovers” story about two shifters on an all shifter baseball team. We met this team in book one (reviewed here: http://kimichanexperience.com/friends-benefits-cheyenne-meadows/)

In this case, Graham is a nice guy and he’s paired with a grumpy-gus- Trigger. Trigger is a horny bastard and it makes things difficult because Trigger has no communication skills. The two dance around each other a long time but finally someone caves in…

There’s a lot of bear humor in this and some pretty hot smexy times. The feels are there, but more subtle.

I like Cheyenne’s writing style and I love her cat shifter books quite a bit. I thought this was fun and hot at times, but it wasn’t as deep as some of her other works.

If you like baseball, shifters, grumpy guys and humor – give this a go!

Review

I won’t review each book – for one – they’re all a little similar. Each Prince has an aheri – a human male mate – found on earth – while they live in another very earthlike dimension – and for two- that’s too many!

There is a lot of magic. Insta-love. Mpreg. Danger from people wanting to steal the power the royals have. Lots of really hot smexy times with a few kinks thrown in and then babies.

You must read this in order for it to have it’s best impact as each story leads to the next, but if you’re like me – you’ll want to do that anyway!

I loved this series and have read it at least 3 times now… so, I highly recommend it to fans of mpreg, fated mates, magic, rags to riches, hurt/abuse and good, fun, smexy times.  Don’t expect great literature, but each book has it’s own flavor and fun, and is full of ooey gooey sappiness that makes my heart go pitter pat!
