Human Instincts by April Kelley

Extasy Books Presents:

http://www.extasybooks.com/human-instincts/

Blurb

A human soldier and an omega wolf shifter find out they’re mates in a world where segregation between humans and paranormals is standard operating procedure.

Dylan Kole knows how to do one thing, and that’s to be a soldier in the human army. He doesn’t know how to fit in with a bunch of paranormal beings, and he certainly doesn’t know how to be a mate to Rudy Malone, the only omega wolf shifter on Roguefalls Island. One thing Dylan does have going for him is his ability to follow his instincts.

Review

This is the first in the Roguefalls series (books 2 &3 reviewed previously). Although the books can be read in any order, I wish I had read this first – I think I would have appreciated the following books more.
Dylan is a human who has been kicked out of his home for being gay. He joins the human army where he meets Rudy, an omega wolf shifter. At first, Dylan is surprised that he has a mile-wide protective streak when it comes to Rudy, but eventually gives in; Rudy, on the other hand, is trying to prove that he can look after himself. I liked that both men worked through their issues- Dylan’s possessiveness and Rudy’s need to assert himself. The world-building is easy to follow and believable. There is little angst, some funny moments as Dylan tries to accept that paranormals exist. All in all, an enjoyable start to a nice series.

Shawn (Gillham Pack #24) by Catherine Lievens

Extasy Presents

http://www.extasybooks.com/shawn/

Blurb

Life’s curve balls aren’t always a bad thing.

Shawn has been alone since his wife passed away. He has his three kids, and he loves them more than anything, but he misses having a partner to share his life with. He’s not looking for one, though, not while the kids still live with him. That’s one of the reasons he’s so surprised when he ends up being a Nix’s mate.

Jarah hadn’t expected to meet his mate when he went to talk to Neriah. He has more than enough problems to deal with—Titus still acting crazy, the fight between the rogue shifters and the humans in town getting worse. And now he has to learn how to be a stepfather, even though Terry, Shawn’s oldest child, hates his guts.

Shawn and Jarah learn to mesh their lives together, but when Shawn and his children are threatened for associating with shifters, Jarah decides to take matters into his own hands. Will he manage to keep his mate safe, or will he lose him before he can even get used to having a family?

Review

I’ve read most of the books in this series, but have been reluctant to lately because it feels as if we’ve sort of run out of steam.  However…

I picked this up because I thought we’d get some great “I was married to a woman and now I’m mated to a man” angst. But we don’t.

Shawn already knew about paranormals and had been attracted to men in the past so there was nothing new here at all.

There’s a struggle because Shawn’s kids don’t necessarily want to accept Jarah and some waffling about where to live, but most of this was not very exciting and I was disappointed.

Another problem I had was the ending. It’s very abrupt – so abrupt I thought maybe I was missing some pages! Our MCs are in a big kerfuffle about a kidnapped shifter and then suddenly that gets “solved” and our MCs decide that’s that, everyone’s safe and they love each other. I was like “What just happened???”

I hate to say it, but I think maybe this series has run it’s course…

Damien (Council Enforcers Book 7) by Catherine Lievens

Extasy Books Presents

Blurb

Damien is an enforcer, and he loves his job. He loves helping people who don’t have anyone else on their side, and he loves his team like a family. There’s something missing in his life, though, and he knows what it is. A lot of his friends are finding their mates, yet he’s still single.

Jake is back in Gillham, hoping to talk some sense into his father. Jake still thinks Sei is too young to be mated with an eighty-six-year-old bear shifter, but his dad doesn’t listen, no matter how many times Jake tries to tell him that.

When Damien and Jake meet, Damien’s age is a problem for Jake from the very beginning. There are only twenty years between them, which isn’t a lot for shifters, but Jake can’t see beyond it and beyond how fragile Damien looks. So he leaves.

Damien accepts a job as a bodyguard in the hope he’ll start forgetting Jake. They’re in the same city, though, and when Jake tentatively reaches out to him, Damien will have to choose whether he wants to give his mate a second chance or not. To complicate things, someone is after Hudson, the man Damien is protecting and who also is a friend of Jake’s family.

Will Damien give Jake another chance? Or will something happen to separate them before they can get over their problems?

Review

I liked this story. You have a man upset because his dad has met his mate who is 40 years younger than him, 20 years younger than the son. And then the son meets his mate who is 20 years younger than him. So Jake dismisses Damien as too young and too fragile. A right hook to Jake’s chin shows him that Damien is anything but fragile.
We meet Hudson who comes off as a playboy, but in fact is still mourning the loss of his mate 20 years ago. I really liked Hudson. I hope to see him again in this series.
The story proceeds to show us Damien doing his job with Jake watching. They step back from each other and just talk and text to try and get to know each other. A heavy make out session suddenly gets turned around and the 2 end up mated.

Mael (Council Enforcers Book 6) by Catherine Lievens

Extasy Books Presents

http://www.extasybooks.com/mael/?search=catherine%20lievens&sub_category=1&sort=p.date_added&order=DESC&limit=25

Blurb:

When Mael agrees to help Lenny retrieve his best friend Scott after he’s been dumped, he thinks it’ll be an easy in and out job. He knows it isn’t as soon as he sets eyes on Scott, because Scott is his mate.

Scott’s just been dumped by his boyfriend of several weeks, who went back to his ex. He’s surprised when he realizes Mael is his mate, then worried when Mael and the rest of his team are sent to work with Mael’s tribe—and Mael’s ex-boyfriend, Muirgeh, who is his tribe’s leader.

Though Mael and Muirgeh were together two years, that’s in the past. When Scott persuades Yerad to shimmer him to the tribe in the middle of the mission because he doesn’t trust Mael and Muirgeh, Mael is angry, but he understands. Besides, Scott is useful to the team, and he helps them look for the shifters stealing food and entering tribe territory.

Will Muirgeh’s presence influence Mael and Scott’s relationship? Will Scott be able to get over how close Mael is to Muirgeh? And what will happen when Mael accidentally initiates the mating bond?

Review:

Jealousy is abundant in this story, as well as second guessing. Is Mael a rebound for Scott, and will mael and Muirgeh get back together after being apart for a year? Not quite a comedy of errors but some angst to keep the story moving.
I like that Ms Lievens keeps many of the characters from past stories intermingled in her current stories. We all have our favorites, as well as a few we would like to strangle (Not mentioning Lenny’s name).
The Enforcers manage to catch the pack they are hunting and with everyone back at the house we learn of the packs story.

Wrong Place, Right Time (Rogue Falls Novella) by April Kelley

Extasy Books Presents

Blurb

Uri Etters is very good at getting himself into trouble. Good thing for him he knows how to handle most criminals. He finds himself in need of a rescue when some territorial crow shifters think he’s an enemy spy. Virion might have swooped in and saved the day, but it’s been Uri’s experience that nothing comes free, not even from a respected Rogue soldier. Uri discovers love comes easier than trust.

Review

This is the third in the Roguefalls series. It can be read as a standalone, but recommend reading the first 2 books to fully understand the world-building – I plan on getting book 1.
Uri lives with his 2 brothers in a tent city. They are orphaned and considered ‘singles’ – people without a pack/clan or similar family structure. One of the brothers, Casey, needs medical help so Uri decides to try to make some money to help. Somehow, he gets in the middle of a turf war and is rescued by the commander of Team Five, Virion.
Virion recognises that Uri is his mate, but Uri is a little slow to the party. Both MC’s have some adjusting to do: Virion needs to understand that his mate is independent and not believe that Uri is with him out of gratitude. Uri has to learn to accept help when offered. Though they hit a rough patch of miscommunication, they are able to bond and develop the affection, (Virion is already in love), between them.
Uri is funny, vulnerable, yet strong, while Virion appears strong and intractable, but he is surprisingly soft and sweet where his mate is concerned. The secondary characters are memorable and fun as well, including Casey, Jalen, the couples from the first 2 books.
I liked the story with its mix of adventure, heart and humour; looking forward to next couple or throuple!

Resistance (Rogue Falls #2) by April Kelley

Extasy Books Presents
http://www.extasybooks.com/resistance/?search=april%20kelley&sub_category=1&sort=p.date_added&order=DESC

Blurb

Christian has never had a serious relationship in his life. He doesn’t plan to start with an alpha wolf shifter who thinks he can dictate what Christian is and isn’t going to do. Ward Malone might trigger every warning bell Christian has, but he also triggers every sexual fantasy. Christian wouldn’t mind giving in to Ward if fun was all he wanted. Unfortunately, Ward is an all-or-nothing kind of guy.

Review

This is the second in the Roguefalls series. It can be read as a standalone, but recommend reading the first 2 books to fully understand the world-building – I plan on getting book 1.

Christian (human) is a ‘single’, – someone without a pack/clan or similar family structure. He’s had an unhappy childhood which has made him wary of relationships. Wade, (shifter) on the other hand, is ready to settle down as soon as he meets his mate. Wade has a hard time convincing his mate that they belong together, despite the heat and attraction between them. While they go back and forth on getting together, the banter between them is fun, heated. I understood Christians’ reservations about getting into a permanent relationship but he seemed too focused on his past rather than looking at the possibility of a better future. In the end, Christian learns to trust in what Ward is offering –permanence – and they get together.

This is my first time reading April Kelley and it was an enjoyable experience. There are some things in the book I felt I missed because I have not read the first in the series, but not enough to detract from the story.
I liked all the characters and hope Virion (the team leader) gets his story next.

Blurb

Ronald feels old, washed up. As a middle aged gay man on the scene, he cannot help but wonder if his time is over. His frustrations are further exacerbated when he finds himself the victim of a group of thugs who seem to find it funny to torment him in his own home.

Ronald is planning a party, a summer celebration of his middle age, but as he begins the preparations in his hot kitchen, a Policeman turns up to question Ronald about the attacks. Over the course of the interview, Ronald comes to understand that perhaps age is just a number after all.

Review

A short, sweet, humourous story of an older man who unexpectedly finds romance. Ronald is in the kitchen preparing to bake to calm him, somehow this simple chore makes him think of sex *smile*. He laments about his weight, his social life (current lack thereof) and other things. To add insult to injury, some neighbourhood kids are terrorising his home. He calls the police and the constable that shows up is a drool-worthy specimen of a man.

For a short story (about 29 pages), it packed a fair bit in, including a bit of a twist. This is an enjoyable snack of a story, guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Cerris (Council Enforcers Book 4) By Catherine Lievens

Extasy Presents
http://www.extasybooks.com/cerris/

Blurb:
Cerris is an orphan who’s been told he’s a monster all his life, and he’s come to believe it. He did his best to keep his werewolf half under control, but when he killed a hunter, Dominic asked the enforcers for help. Cerris is sent to work with their only werewolf, but as soon as he sees the man, he realizes they’re mates, and he runs.

Jackson doesn’t understand why Cerris runs, but he intends to find out. When he finally locates Cerris, Cerris’ friends intervene and explain what happened to him and why he doesn’t want to see Jackson—Jackson is a werewolf, and all werewolves are monsters.

Jackson knows he’ll have to work hard to convince Cerris of the contrary, and he hopes finding Cerris’ long-lost father will help. He also has to teach Cerris to control his wolf before something happens.

Will Cerris learn control, or will he become the monster he always thought he was?

Review

The more I read this series the more involved in the storyline I get. I am actually looking forward to the next books in the series.

In this story we have Cerris who has been physically and mentally beaten down his whole life. Dealing with a prejudice cultivated by his tribe leader, he lived basically as a slave and believed himself a monster. When Cerris discovers he is Mates with Jackson, he is first terrified and then intrigued. Jackson knows something is up but for him it takes a while.

I like how we are shown Jackson’s family as an example of normal. Just everyday people or beings that worry about the same things a typical family does. I also liked how Cerris confronts his protagonist to learn the reasons behind his actions.

In the end there is a HEA and the carrot dangled of another story.

Daniel knew going to look for shifters with his best friend Anthony wasn’t a good idea, but he never expected it to end like it did. Now he has a new job with Kameron Rhett, the Gillham pack alpha, and he loves it. He enjoys being around shifters, and even more being away from his house and his alcoholic father.

Bran Morris’ first meeting as the head of the council enforcers takes him to Gillham. Kameron needs to make a decision about coming out to the town, and Bran is supposed to help with it. He never expected to meet his mate, not after losing his wife and child thirty-six years before.

Daniel and Bran hit it off right away, but when Daniel’s father becomes a problem, Daniel doesn’t know what to do. Should he live his life and be with his mate, or should he stick with his father to be sure the man doesn’t hurt himself? What would happen to his relationship with Bran if he chooses his father?

Review

Catherine Lievens has created a world that involves shifters and other paranormal creatures all hiding/living in plain sight. This is a spinoff from her Gillham Pack series, so many of the characters have shown up in previous stories.

This story is learning about loyalty. Loyalty to your mate, to your job, and to your family. Catherine weaves a great story containing all of these elements. Daniel is new to learning about shifters and on top of that he comes face to face to his supposed mate. Bran is on his first day of his new job with no prep, or background. From here the two decide with a lot of second guessing where it will all end up.

I liked the story. It was an easy read for an afternoon and I look forward to the rest of the books in the series.
