For over a century, Lachlan Addair worked for the Shifter Council as an enforcer. When the ruling body decided to open a new investigative branch, Lachlan was the first to volunteer. Infiltrating and exploring a shifter unit without detection is right up his curious cat’s alley. When Lachlan’s duty to report the causes of strife within a lynx pride has him slipping into Councilman Goldstein’s estate undetected—just for fun, of course—Lachlan stumbles across Thad—his mate. Unfortunately, the wild turkey shifter is standoffish and brusque. He doesn’t trust Lachlan and makes no secret that he thinks the mate-pull is nothing but a trick of the pheromones—something he’s determined to ignore. Lachlan loves a good puzzle and is undeterred. He admires Thad’s loyalty and uses his extensive wiles to cultivate a little of that for himself. When Lachlan is injured wrapping up a case, will it be the catalyst his mate uses to reject Lachlan—his job could bring so much danger to his flock, after all—and send him on his way?

Review

Charlie Richards is a comforting read for me. I like seeing familiar faces, I know what’s going to happen in the story and there’s usually something sweet or fun that surprises me and keeps thing interesting.

I think you’re ok reading this as a standalone but book 1 would help and knowing the entire story – like a million books long by now! – makes it even better.

Out of the Cage: A simple errand to the city causes a wolf shifter to bump into his future…if he’s strong enough to coerce his mate into embracing it.
Gracen Robicheaux felt his petition to fight for the beta position of the Stone Ridge, Colorado wolf shifter pack was a sign from the gods. After over two hundred years, he could finally openly express his desire for a male mate. When Gracen runs into the human Lance Coracans, he changes his opinion. The gods are laughing at him. His worst fear has come to pass—kids. Lance has a very young daughter for whom he’s fighting for custody. Still, Gracen reminds himself that Lance is his mate. Embracing change will be worth it. However, between an injured babysitter, a sick daughter, and pack challenges, their missed and rescheduled dates are piling up. Can Gracen convince Lance that he really is serious? Or will finding out he’s a wolf shifter be the straw that sends Lance running?

Review:
Gracen has left his old pack and come looking for a place in the Stone Ridge pack. He longs for a pack that he does not have to hide his true self from and no more bigotry to deal with. As he waits for the chance to join the pack he begins putting down roots and to his surprise he finds his mate on a trip to buy supplies. Coincidence brigs these two men together but is that enough. What will Lance do when he finds out just what Gracen is hiding.
Gracen and Lance’s story is a sweet and sexy read. The two men are instantly drawn towards each other and begin a tentative relationship. I enjoyed watching Lance and Gracen find their way to a happy ever after. The attraction that the two feel begins to deepen as they spend more time together but when Lance learns what Gracen has been hiding from him is it enough to save the bond that they have begun to build? The romance between Gracen and Lance is sweet, and they are on fire in the bedroom.
With the help of friends and pack the two are able to work towards happiness. Not only do we get a look at the different sides of Gracen and what a good man he is, but we also get to see the pack circle around and Lance and Gracen when they need it most. The author has built a wonderful world with strong characters and I was quickly immersed in their story and engaged all the way to the end.

Time to get Paranormal: Noel (Council Assassins Book 2) by Catherine Lievens

eXtasy Books Inc

Blurb
Noel has spent the past seventeen years focusing first on his studies, then on his job as a lawyer, but the man he had a one-night stand with never left his mind—or his heart. He doesn’t know what it was about Roark, but he’s never been able to forget him, and he’s stopped trying. Instead, he works with the council to help shifters who can’t afford a lawyer. When he receives threats that have to do with the murder case he accepted, he calls Kameron Rhett from the council, who then calls the council’s best-hidden secret—the assassins.

Roark has been a council assassin since he was freed from the lab he spent years in. It’s the only place he fits in, with the other assassins, the people who share a trait with him—all of them have been genetically modified. Roark hates his ability to manipulate minds, and when he realizes the man he’s supposed to protect is the mate he thought long lost, he tries to get out of it.

But Noel is stubborn and headstrong, and he won’t take no for an answer. Between him and Roark’s bear, Roark doesn’t have a choice, and the more time he spends with Noel, the more he falls for him. Will he be able to save his mate from the man after him? And if he does, will he manage to allow himself the happiness he’s been longing for?

Review
I discovered Catherine Lievens’ Whitedell Pride and Gillham Pack series’ about a year ago and binge read the first 40 books or so!! I love the multitude of shifter and paranormal characters she writes about. Noel is a human lawyer who is getting death threats due to his representation of shifter wrongly accused of murdering a human female. In comes Roark to protect him. Roark sees himself as a monster due to what was done to him by human scientists, in reality he is another tortured soul. The chemistry between Roark and Noel is off the charts. This is their second chance at love. I have to say I didn’t see twist ending. I think this could be read as a stand alone but do yourself a favor and read them all!!

Elder Bodb has walked the earth for over a thousand years. All that time, he’s waited patiently for Fate to bring him his mate. When he travels to the Falias clutch to share sentencing information on one of their former members, he catches just the faintest whiff of something…something intoxicating. His mate is finally near. After discovering the smell originated from the brother of a man mated to a gargoyle, Bodb learns that Nicholas Lindson doesn’t know about the paranormal world. To make matters worse, Nicholas is engaged to some socialite in Texas, and the wedding is only a few weeks away. Bodb discovers that’s not the worst thing, though. Nicholas is the heir to a Texas cattle baron empire, and his father is very involved in his life—overly so. Can Elder Bodb figure out how to not only share that paranormals exist and woo Nicholas, but to extricate his human out from under the father’s domineering hand?

Review

Elder Bodb is a gargoyle who is over eleven hundred years old. Nicholas is the brother of Mitch, who is mated to Kardamon (APL #23). No need to read Mitch’s story first.

Nicholas is engaged to be married to Sandra when he learns not only about paranormal creatures, but he is also chosen by fate herself to be mated to Bodb.

One major problem, Nicholas is a man of his word and calling off the wedding was not an option.

“My mate is a man of deep honor.” – Bodb

Then there is Nicholas and Mitch’s father Baltus. What a jerk!!!

“His father cared for one thing, and pleasure wasn’t it. It’s always about the bottom line. Money.” – Nicholas

I love the instant connection they have. Both are open to listening and figuring out a way for Nicholas to keep his promise and still be with his mate. Bodb may not find the situation ideal, but he will have his mate however he can.

“Please try to understand that you are my mate. A gift from the gods. And I am willing to do whatever is necessary to make you happy.” -Bodb

I hope there is more explaining at some point about “Uncle Albert”.

Charlie Richards always writes quick, hot and entertaining reads. As a huge gargoyle fan, I’m always excited when a new story comes out.

Into the Paranormal World: When a woman-loving player finds himself unexpectedly lusting after a male, he discovers the power of the paranormal.

Over the last couple of years, Mitch Lindson has watched his buddies fall in love and bond with gargoyles. He’s happy that they’re happy…but he doesn’t understand it. Settling down with one person isn’t even a blip on his radar, yet. On top of that, all gargoyles are male. Mitch used to double date with his friends. He can’t figure out their sudden switch. When the gargoyle Kardamon breaks up his bid to seduce a daughter of one of the paranormals, Mitch is shocked to feel arousal for the male. Confused, he runs. The dreams start shortly thereafter, leaving him horny and dissatisfied. When he discovers he can’t slake his lust in his usual fashion, Mitch’s frustration grows. It doesn’t help that Kardamon manages to seek him out at unexpected times and in secluded places, driving his unexpected and unwanted desire higher. Facing off against Kardamon, can Mitch find a way to get the blue gargoyle out of his system without his life being turned upside down?

Reader Advisory: Lady bits are spoken of in this story, however, no m/f intercourse takes place.

Review

Though I appreciated the warning about “lady bits” – they weren’t really spoken of that often and those “bits” didn’t really affect my enjoyment of this story. I’m a huge Charlie Richards fan – I literally devour all her stories in all her series – but I can’t give this a good mark.

I never liked Mitch. He was a douche-canoe from the outset (his vision of women and love) and he never convinced me otherwise. I feel that Kardamon got the short stick and the way they figured out for Mitch and he to bond… well – it’s unique but…. not exactly loving or joyous.

These are short stories and I love their reliability but this time around it was too short to make me buy into any sort of “conversion” of Mitch to the gay side or even the bi side.

I can’t recommend this if you’re looking for something romantic. It had some interesting twists but that’s about it.

Thirty years before, Vincentius Goldstein agreed to join the council with the express intention of bringing their technology into the twenty-first century. After all, he’d had fun hacking into it. When he discovers someone hacking into his system, his excitement is stirred for the first time in decades.

After figuring out where the hacker is located, Vincentius sends a council investigator after him. To his shock, when the investigator returns with the hacker, a small guinea fowl shifter named Cho, Vincentius realizes the man is his mate. Even with the mate-pull, Cho fears him. After all, Vincentius had ordered Cho captured and taken away from the safety of his flock and friends.

Can Vincentius figure out how to win the favor of his captive, or will he lose the best thing to happen to him in over three hundred years?

Review

This falls back to the Charlie Richards we all know and love! It follows that lovely fated mate trope with a bit of quirky humor and some mellow smexy times.

We get to see a newly developing branch of the shifter world – the flock of odd birds who briefly resided with Declan’s wolves, is now branching out! Some of the council men we’ve met before return and we get a new series as a result!

This is the kind of Charlie story I love and I know fans of hers will as well.

Recent Release: Diving with a Hammerhead (Beneath Aquatica’s Waves #3) by Charlie Richards

Extasy Books Presents

Blurb

World of Aquatica: A single choice to do the right thing sends one ex-soldier’s life spiraling out of control.

Solomon Lynch figured his decision to help his boss’s son escape from under his dominating thumb would cost him his job. Instead, it nearly costs him his life. He’s jumped and beaten in an alley, but Solomon has no delusion about who sent the men. He only lives because his ropes weren’t tied tight enough, and he manages to escape the cinderblock that was meant to send him swimming with the fishes. He doesn’t remember much after that, but rousing in an unfamiliar place is a mixed blessing. Doctor Anthony Keller is hawt! Solomon realizes instantly that the doc returns his attraction, but his instincts tell him that Anthony is hiding something. Besides that, how can he drag the handsome man into his screwed up life, a life that could be cut short any minute by a vindictive rich guy?

Review

I love this series! It has everything I want by this author: insta love, interesting creatures, human discovery of the paranormal world, recurring characters, a continuing thread but a story in and of itself.

In Aquatica we have two main Alphas – I’m not sure what type of creature they are – and I can’t wait to read their stories! – who run the show at an aquarium where shifters perform in their shifted forms! There are some predictable bad guys who end up providing fodder for shifters to find their mates.

Though I wasn’t crazy about the ending – it didn’t really end all that solidly – I liked the interaction of shark with mate and the overall story arc.

Floating with his Sea Cow (Beneath Aquatica’s Waves #2) by Charlie Richards

Extasy Presents

Blurb

World of Aquatica: When a foolish dare goes horribly wrong, a human has more than one eye-opening experience.

Tyrone has walked–or swam–the Earth a lot of years. Most of that time he’s spent alone. Working with dozens of other marine shifters at World of Aquatica finally brings him close to others that are sort of his kind–they’re shifters, anyway. He works security, seeing as he can’t be in an exhibit because, technically, his kind are supposed to be extinct. When he spots a skinny human shoplifting, he catches him…and realizes the man–Braylon–is his mate. Tyrone convinces his bross and alpha not to call the police. Instead, they give Braylon hours cleaning the park as a sort of community service. During that time, Tyrone has to go about doing something he hasn’t had to do in over four hundred years of life. Can he figure out how to woo a human so very different than himself?

Review

This was cute!  I like this new series – mostly because of all the unique shifters!-  and I’m really compelled to see more about the owners of aquatica.

I thought Tyrone’s creature was unique and interesting, but otherwise this was a predictable fated mate novella.  In a sense, that’s what keeps me coming back – reliable and fun, quirky shifter romances.

Maximilian (Council Enforcers Book 9) by Catherine Lievens

release day review

Extasy Presents

http://www.extasybooks.com/maximilian/

Blurb:

Sometimes facing the past is the only way to move forward.
Max and his twin, Jessie, moved to Gillham six months ago after the enforcers rescued them from their abusive alpha. Max might not be in peak form yet, but he’s had enough of sitting on his ass all day. When he asks Kameron for a job, he doesn’t expect he’ll be teamed up with his mate.

Dane is still recovering from the years he spent in one of the Glass Research Company’s labs and on the run, but he wants to be useful. When Kameron assigns him to answer the new council hotline, he meets his new colleague, Max. Max isn’t only a coworker, though—he’s also Dane’s mate.

Max and Dane want to move forward, together, but to do that, they have to let go of the past. Max will have to face the council and explain what his alpha did to him, while Dane has to face his past and the betrayal of someone who should have protected him. Getting over a painful past isn’t easy though. Will they be able to keep their relationship steady as they face the memories?

Review:

Catherine Lievens has brought together 2 characters we’ve meet from earlier books. Both MC’s have been through really bad times, yet when they meet that snap of recognition is there.

Maximilian and his twin brother Jesse were rescued in a previous book from the torture of their alpha. Dane and a group of friends had banded together after escaping from an experimental lab and was captured when he and his band of friends were causing problems for a nyse village.

I like how they each supported the other to work through the issues they carried. I like how even though Jesse and Max fought they always seemed to work through most of their issues.

This is a sweet story, that will leave you happy on how the couple resolve their issues and move towards their HEA.

Kanan (Gillham Pack Book 25) by Catherine Lievens

Extasy Presents

http://www.extasybooks.com/kanan/

Blurb:

Since he was rescued from the lab he’d been locked up in, Kanan hasn’t been living—he’s been surviving. He can’t trust anyone, not completely, and it’s easier to hide away in his room, away from life.

Titus lost everything—his father, his tribe, his best friend. He knows Jarah and Neriah did the right thing, taking the tribe away from him, but it doesn’t make accepting that any easier. Yet when Jarah asks him for help, he decides he’ll do what he has to do to keep his best friend and the pack where some of his old tribe members live safe, even if that includes killing the Los Angeles pack’s alpha.

Kanan never expected to meet his mate, not when he spends so much of his time in his room. But when he meets Titus in the woods, he knows he can’t hide away from their bond—and he doesn’t want to. Will he manage to get through the anger Titus has shrouded himself in? And will Titus find a way to break the thick walls Kanan built around his heart?

Review:

Every couple in this series seems to be damaged in some way, yet the author has been able to tell their story to make it unique to them. A red panda who was taken prisoner and given to an experimental lab, tortured and survived with horrible scars and a Nyse that had been brow beaten by his father on who he should grow up to be.

I loved how understanding Kanan was about Titus’ past. That the influence of his father followed him even after the man was dead. That he was willing to give him the chance to change who he thought he was so they could mate. And I loved how Titus only saw how strong his mate was to survive what he went through even though Kanan thought that he was damaged goods.

A nice afternoon read with a feel good ending.
