Vasska has waited his entire life to find his mate. In the end he puts all his hope into his goddess to find him someone to love, little does he know she’s listening?

Shay was at the end of his rope. His uncles had taken over and were trying to get control of Shay’s fortune. His parents were dead, his assets were tied up and no one wanted to hire a guy in his twenties to be an apprentice.

When a grey man hands Shay a note, he discovers it takes a goddess’s intervention to get his life back on track

Review
A lovely quick read about a vampire king desperately looking for his mate. He pleads with the Goddess for help and she sends him Shay. It all happens at a fast pace but I liked that. Shay needs to find a way to support himself and is loosing hope when a man in a grey suit sends him to the Vampire castle. I quite liked the plot to this story. Both Vasska and Shay are looking for security, Vasska’s rule is being undermined and Shay desperately needs to get away from his uncles. I liked the humour in the first meeting which quickly moved on to lust and mating. Despite the political manoeuvring there is a happy ending.

Next book: Eater of Lives

When an incubus murders the powerful ally of an anti-paranormal senator, it’s up to hotshot Federal agent John Starkweather to catch the demon before it can kill again. Fortunately, he has backup, in the form of his boyfriend Caleb, a telekinetic possessed by the vampire spirit Gray.

As the political pressure mounts and bodies pile up, John discovers an old enemy protecting the incubus: the Fist of God, a group that believes all paranormals are evil. But why would the Fist work with a demon? And why would they let it kill one of their own allies?

John and Caleb need to find out fast. Because the incubus lurks at the intersection of love and longing, and it’s willing to turn their deepest desires against them.

Review

First let me say that in each book of this series there is a definite story, a mystery to solve. Then there is the ongoing story of John, Caleb and Grey. Jordon Hawke has woven them together so well, you just want to keep turning the pages to see where they end in each book.

John gets trapped by The incubus and as we all know an incubus will draw on your deepest desires to seduce you and we see that John has desired Grey. This is just a small hint of things to come, but it makes us all wonder.

We hear again that a possessed person will say anything to make you believe they are okay and in control, all of this in reference to how Caleb is dealing with being possessed by Grey.

We have the great give and take as Caleb and Grey talk to each other, and we see Grey developing into a more opinionated personality.

2nd Edition

A Sanctuary Novel

Can cats and dogs ever get along, let alone fall in love?

Sam knows you can never go home again. As an orphaned feline shifter raised by wolves, being an outcast is nothing new to him. But the pack is still his family, and when one of them passes away, Sam returns to the New Mexico desert to say good-bye.

Gus is a loner who rarely returns to his pack, but as fate would have it, Sam is there when he chooses to visit. The history between Gus and Sam is tumultuous, to say the least, but when Gus gets an eyeful of the grown-up and gorgeous version of his childhood bully, he can’t control his reaction. And he isn’t alone.

The attraction is powerful, but so are their differences. And with trouble brewing in the pack and danger surrounding them, Sam and Gus might not have the opportunity to seek common ground.

This action-packed shifter novel is the ultimate opposites attract and enemies-to-lovers romance, and it includes a bonus novella, In the Dog House.

First Edition published by Torquere Press, 2011.

Review
(Book reviewed here previously)

This was a lot of fun! One thing I appreciate about BA Tortuga’s shifter books is how “animal-like” the shifters are, even while in human form. They purr, growl, crave tuna, rub against one another and chase birds in the park. Sometimes the writing style reflects this – short, staccato phrases that go along with a more “simple” brain and this can be disconcerting until you get into the rhythm.

I was confused at times by the whole “mate” thing. It’s not as simple as some other shifter novels where they meet, know immediately and claim one another. It’s a bit more subtle than that, so I found myself flipping back and forth trying to figure out if I’d missed something when our MCs go from fighting to fucking to calling one another Mate.

I also didn’t fully understand the whole situation regarding Sam in the city and what happened. Maybe we’ll learn more as the series progresses? But that was not really clear. Nor was the family situation. I guess the “sanctuary” is meant to be the big adopted family but having everyone refer to one another as brother and sister (even when they hooked up) was a bit confusing and disconcerting. (I was also confused about the type of cat Sam was – the cover suggests a Jaguar but the way he acted felt more like a house cat…)

Overall, I really enjoyed this. There was a lot of sex and a lot of odd discussions but a lot of warmth and humor and sentiment as well.

I definitely recommend this to fans of shifter romances, but you might want to read a sample first if you’ve never read anything by this author before, as she has a distinct style that not everyone enjoys.
(This cover is a huge improvement over the original! Kudos!)

Audio

Joe Formichella is a new to me narrator. Though he’s done a few audiobooks there weren’t many with reviews and though I wasn’t blown away by the sample, I wanted to give him a try.

I enjoyed this as a story and was hoping that the narrator would be able to have fun with all the humor, accents, and fun pacing BA uses in her stories. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Joe’s voice is pretty nasal. He’s got an older voice which didn’t necessarily fit the story, though he does have the “country” sound that fits the locale. He’s not a very emotional reader and doesn’t do much to add inflection to his reading, characterizations or to even differentiate between man or woman. He’s not great at “performing”, but rather reads the words.

I wouldn’t choose a book by this narrator and – honestly – I will probably avoid books if he’s the narrator because he doesn’t add anything to the story and his tendency to let sentences run on became distracting.

We all have tragic backstories in today’s world.

I wake up chained to the wall of a dark cell aware of two things: I failed my sister, and I smell my enemy.

When I’m taken to meet Dare, the alpha of the Silver Tip pack, I’m sure I’m about to lose my throat. The last thing I expect is for the Alpha to recognize me as his fated mate. No way is he going to let me go now, and I still have to find a way to rescue my sister.

As I plot my escape to save her, I find that if I leave, Dare could be killed by power-hungry members of his pack. And now he’s more to me than my fated mate—my heart is involved. With time ticking by on my sister’s life, I have to make a choice I never thought I’d face—my sister’s life or my mate’s? That’s if I can survive the undead shifters intent on killing me first…

Review
Wow! This is an INTENSE story. I had to take this is shifts because the tension is so high and my emotions would run away with me. (An excellent thing for an author to be able to do – BTW.) As I’d been expecting – from reading the blurb and other reviews – this was not your typical, furry, funny, sweet shifter story. First, it’s got zombie werewolves in it – so there’s that! The mate pull is viscous and sometimes cruel and though the romance in this story is top notch and very emotional, the secondary story – living in this horrible zombie world – is hard to read.

I really enjoyed some of the mini-politics that happen in these post-apocalyptic worlds where everyone is fighting for their lives but I have to say that I tend to avoid these types of stories for a good reason – they are tough emotionally. When people/werewolves are under stress they don’t always act like nice folks.

In any case, the writing – as usual – is excellent, the world building is thorough and complex, the romance and smexy times are scorching and very compelling.

You definitely have to brace yourself for this and be prepared for something atypical, but if you’re a shifter romance fan I think you should give this a try. If you’re a dystopian/apocalypse type fan – you’ll want to give this a try as well.
(When I’ve recovered I’m moving on to book 2…wish me luck!)

Highly recommended!

Spooky Review: Familiar Angel by Amy Lane

Dreamspinner Presents

Blurb

One hundred and forty years ago, Harry, Edward, and Francis met an angel, a demon, and a sorceress while escaping imprisonment and worse! They emerged with a new family—and shapeshifting powers beyond their wildest dreams.
Now Harry and his brothers use their sorcery to rescue those enslaved in human trafficking—but Harry’s not doing so well. Pining for Suriel the angel has driven him to take more and more risks until his family desperately asks Suriel for an intervention.
In order for Suriel to escape the bindings of heaven, he needs to be sure enough of his love to fight to be with Harry. Back when they first met, Harry was feral and angry, and he didn’t know enough about love for Suriel to justify that risk. Can Suriel trust in Harry enough now to break his bonds of service for the boy who has loved his Familiar Angel for nearly a century and a half?

Review

I’m having a tough time reviewing this.

On the one hand, I enjoyed it – as I do nearly every Amy book I’ve ever read, and like those of hers I’ve read a million times.

Amy is very good at giving us clear, crisp writing with just the right amount of show versus tell. The back story for our boys is delivered in a bits and pieces with only small amounts of flash backs to fill in the gaps.

We’re shown the budding relationships between all 3 boys with telling glimpses rather than overt smacks to the face. Sometimes, however, the subtlety got a bit too murky.

It’s obvious that Suriel and Harry are falling/have fallen for one another, but I really missed that moment when it happened … and the reasons why they have to be apart are a little vague and I wasn’t always sure why the things that happened … did.

I loved the cat-ness in this story! The back and forth and the human manifestations of the feline persona were priceless!

The chemistry between Harry and Suriel isn’t as “warm” as some of her other couples, and – in fact – if we get to see the other brother’s stories – I’m sensing a lot more heat between them and their partners already than I did between Suriel and Harry. Instead, theirs felt more like a blanket than a fire – if you know what I mean. They wanted one another, and the passion was talked about – but I don’t know that I felt it much.

I absolutely loved the world building and the “moral of the story” with big Cass and all the “powers” and magic.

I’m really looking forward to the next books in the series!

Caleb Jansen’s old life is in ruins after being possessed by the vampire spirit Gray. Now all Caleb wants is for Gray to be exorcised so he can adjust to living as a registered paranormal. Instead, District Chief Kaniyar of SPECTR offers him a new choice: be locked away for public safety, or come work for the very agency he’s spent years trying to avoid. The only good thing to come from Caleb’s possession is his relationship with federal exorcist John Starkweather, but even that seems doomed to end before it can really begin.

John’s newest case is a nightmare: someone is summoning demons and forcing them to possess women and boys snatched from the streets of Charleston. If his team can’t find the summoner soon enough, the possessions will become permanent, transforming the victims into ghouls. To make matters worse, he barely prevents Gray from feeding on their only lead.

Can John shield his heart from Caleb, who only seems interested in a temporary hook-up? Can Caleb keep Gray under control while they hunt for the summoner? Or will the cost of solving the case be higher than any of them could have guessed?

Because the master of ghouls has set his sights on a new target: Gray.

Review:

This story is picked up a few days after the conclusion of the first book, with Caleb being asked to now help John and Spectr hunt NHE’s, and as much as Caleb doesn’t want to help the very organization that he hates, he doesn’t want to be locked up until he can get Grey exorcised.

We also get to hear Caleb and Grey as they talk to each other inside of Caleb’s head. There are some pretty funny conversations. Caleb and John’s personal relationship grows, with Grey watching, even during the sex.

We are seeing Grey evolve as the story progresses, he now refrains from going after humans that are possessed but not at the 40 day limit. But that doesn’t mean he has gone soft.

I enjoyed the continuation of the story and am off to read the next in the series.

Jason Day, brilliant designer of video games, is not only a confirmed bachelor, but he’s as gay as a maypole. One wouldn’t think being saddled with his precocious four-year-old nephew for four weeks would be enough to throw him off-kilter.

Wrong. Timmy, Jason’s nephew, is a true handful.

But just when Timmy and Uncle Jason begin to bond, and Jason feels he’s getting a grip on this babysitting business once and for all, he’s thrown for a loop by a couple of visitors—one from Tucson, the other from beyond the grave.

I’m sorry. Say what?

Toss a murder, a hot young stud, an unexpected love affair, and a spooky-ass ghost with a weird sense of humor into Jason’s summer plans, and you’ve got the makings for one hell of a ride.

Review

I really enjoyed this book ☺ Jason has to look after his nephew, Timmy, while his sister goes on holidays with her boyfriend. There is little affection between the siblings, even less with the BF, but Jason adores his nephew and is looking forward to spending time with him. As Jason is babysitting his ‘smarter-than-him’ nephew, mysterious things start to happen in the house. Then, to make things even more interesting, Timmy’s uncle Sam comes to visit. Once Sam arrives, the ghostly manifestations become more frequent and more defined. The 3 of them end up having to handle a haunting, solving a mystery and fielding calls from an irate sister/mum. All of which made for an entertaining story.

The mix of spooky, humour, mystery and romance was very well done. Once you get the backstory of Jason and his sister, the ghost becomes fairly obvious, but the mystery behind how the ghost came to be left me pleasantly surprised. The ghostly actions were interesting, (I especially loved when he used Bugs Bunny to communicate to Jason). And the attraction and relationship between Jason and Sam developed fairly quickly (not a criticism), blending well into the story.
Overall, this is a fun, chilling story that I would read again.

There’s a shift of power happening in Hell, and nothing will ever be the same.

Kerr has been with High Demon Horatio’s household since his age of majority. A natural submissive pleasure demon, for the last seven years he has been untouched by his master Horatio and his job has morphed into a more managerial role. Still, it’s a shock when goons from Master Belial’s house arrive at his doorstep to inform him he’s been sold and his new master expects him to come immediately.

Lost by Horatio in a card game, Kerr finds himself in the Belial household, where Ceris, Master of the Harem, takes Kerr under his wing. Kerr is not only honored and used as he was made to be, but he is given a newly acquired demon, Harmony, as his own to train. The three pleasure demons have a rocky start, but they have all the time in Hell to figure out how to work together, and it isn’t long before they begin to care for one another.

Meanwhile, Belial has waited for thousands of years for Horatio to admit he’s actually a submissive. When it appears that’s never going to happen, Belial arranges for his best friend to lose a card game in which he’s offered himself as the prize. Horatio can’t believe Belial would do this for him, but the council puts their seal of approval on the bet, and he has no choice but to offer himself to Belial, who immediately gets to work convincing Horatio that he’ll be so much happier as Belial’s sub.

Will Kerr and Horatio find joy in their places in the Belial household? Only time will tell

Review
Phew, they certainly need a demonic libido to keep up with each other! Kerr is a submissive pleasure demon but when he is moved to his new master’s house he is a bit out of practice. Well of course there is only one thing to do about that and it is Ceris’s pleasure to do so. The fun starts from page four and doesn’t stop.
There are two stories running along side each other in this book. There is Belial’s sneaky pursuit of his friend Horatio. Both of them are High Master Demons but Belial is convinced Horatio is really a bottom. Horatio has been denying his nature all his life and now he’s in the position he has always dreamed of but his pride will not let him accept it. The other story is in the Belial’s harem with Ceris, Kerr and Harmony. Poor Harmony brought low by defaulting on a loan now finds himself a pleasure slave, a very reluctant and virginal one. Kerr has to train Harmony in his new position in the household. And both have to pleasure Ceris. What I like about Sean Michael is that there is always love in the relationship. The submissive is always cared for. I must admit I was a bit surprised by the epilogue.
If you are into BDSM with a lot of hot action and a touch of plot this could be just for you.

I think this one is my absolute favourite of the series! It’s just so intense! We had had a lot of hint’s about what was coming, but it’s still breath stopping nail bitingly intense to get through this story! I need to throw every star there is after this book!
It’s just sooo good! And Whyborne and Griffin are just heart wrenchingly wonderful together.

Hunting ghosts and finding more than they bargained for.

Blaine Franks is a member of the paranormal research group the Supernatural Explorers. When the group loses their techie to a cross-country move, newly graduated Flynn Huntington gets the job. Flynn fits in with the guys right off the bat, but when it comes to him and Blaine, it’s more than just getting along.

Things heat up between Blaine and Flynn as they explore their first haunted building, an abandoned hospital, together. Their relationship isn’t all that progresses, though, and soon it seems that an odd bite on Blaine’s neck has become much more.

Hitchhiking ghosts, a tragic love story forgotten by time, and the mystery of room 204 round out a romance where the things that go bump in the night are real.

Review

This was way more spooky than I anticipated!

I was thinking this was going to be more funny than anything and –honestly – by the name I thought if some sort of Super Hero theme was going to play out – but there are no Super Heroes. It’s very spooky at times, and the ending HEA is even more sweet than I’d have thought by the half-way point!

I was very pleasantly surprised by this and thought it was a well crafted suspense story combined with a sweet and lovely supernatural story of love beyond time.

Highly recommended!
