Blurb
When a simple ‘find & fetch’ case throws private investigator Twig Starfig and newly-minted wizard, Quinn Broomsparkle, into the middle of an EBI murder investigation, it’s just another day in the Elder Realm.

If murder were Twig’s only problem, he’d be the luckiest half-dragon in the land. Murder he can handle. Fulfilling his promise to his scheming, power-hungry father to run for a seat on Lighthelm’s city council? Meh, he’d rather face a demon with a toothache.

On top of their case going sideways, and Twig running for a council seat he really doesn’t want, Twig and Quinn are forced to face some unpleasant realities about their budding romance, while still learning how to handle the wizard-familiar bond they now share. Throw in a red fury with abysmal taste in boyfriends, a ghost pirate-parrot who drinks too much, a murderer who will stop at nothing to get what they want, a host of new friends and enemies, and you’ve got a situation where no one is safe and everyone is Fairy Game

Review
This book carries on from the end of the first book, By Fairy means or Foul. In my opinion you do need to read (or listen the audiobook book is great) to book 1. I’d forgotten how much I love these characters, and I do mean Characters. Twig is a dragon shifter, Quinn a Wizard and Bill the daemon Red Fury (he’s my favourite). In this book we have a murder mystery, political intrigue and family drama. There is so much going on in the story. It keeps quite a pace without losing it’s integrity. Meghan Maslow has built a wonderful world which just keeps on getting better with each book. There are a lot of new characters with their own quirky ways that make it so fun to read. As well as ones from the first book. Twig and Quinn’s complicated relationship is continuing to build, Twig is Quinn’s familiar and in this story they struggle with whether to mate or not. Such a difficult situation when you’re already bound together in a different way. The murder mystery is handled quite well. Kept me guessing, and I like that about it. Someone is also trying to kill Twig’s father (who I’ve slowly warmed to). That looks like one of the threads that will carry on to book 3, because for me there are too many loose ends for the series not to carry on. I do hope this story comes out on audiobook as well.

Opposites who go together like country and rock ’n’ roll.

Long before he was a superstar, Remy Sean had a secret crush on Jed Riley. But Jed sees Remy as a spoiled pop rocker and an extension of his father’s control. Still, Jed is willing to let Remy hide from the press on his ranch—but only as a way to get his father out of his life and business for good.

Used to being admired and fawned over, Remy keenly feels the sting of Jed’s dismissal. Can he make Jed see him as more than a pain in the ass? Or is Jed too tangled up in his ranch to see past his old hurt?

Jed doesn’t believe someone desired by so many fans could want him, a simple cowboy. But Remy is determined to change Jed’s mind and steal his heart….

Review

This book title really got my attention. A good opposites attract story can be great to read. Jed is the hardened cowboy and farmer and Remy is the rock star spoiled playboy. Remy is used to people falling at his feet in awe and Jed is used to being by himself and not getting his hopes up. Jed was extremely rude in the beginning since to him, Remy was just a means to an end and an inconvenience. Remy had an incident that has left him with panic struggles. I feel for him on a very personal level. The struggles were very well portrayed. Jed and Remy started out rough around the edges despite an attraction. There’s cute banter, self-esteem moments, snark, shameless flirting, hot cowboy, and some steamy bedroom fun. I greatly enjoyed reading this wonderful book.

“You’ll either be the death of me or my salvation.”

KEITH
I don’t do romance. I possess. I use. And when I get bored, I discard. I’m not the good guy. Life stomped all the goodness out of me years ago. Now I’ll scheme and manipulate to get what I want.

What Do I Want?
Gio Arcuri

He walks into my office with a confidence that whets my appetite. By force of habit, I am compelled to exert my dominance. This man who matches me in wit and physical strength will get down on his knees. I will make him beg.

There’s only one problem.

I’ve found me a man whose will won’t bend even when his body is broken. A man who satisfies my demons only too well. How can a relationship that starts so wrong face anything but disaster?

GIO
After two years away, my best friend Tate pulls up in town with a new boyfriend in tow. What’s my plan? For his boyfriend to become an ex and for me to be the new man in Tate’s life.

What’s Standing In My Way ?
Keith Eardley

He’s only supposed to help me to get rid of Bryan but makes the most ridiculous proposition for him to render his assistance. He wants me on my knees. The worst part of it is that I can’t refuse. He may have the upper hand, but I will not submit to him. It doesn’t matter how much I crave the punishment he doles out with his Cat-O’-Nine. But the more I know Keith, the more I want from him. Not just his punishment. Not just his bondage. Keith thinks I’ll be either his salvation or the death of him, but what if he will be the death of me?

Corporate Bondage is 70k+ steamy romance with HEA between two unlikely anti-heroes you will love.

Review

This book starts out really intense and dark from the very first chapter, grabbing the reader’s attention from the get-go.
Both MC’s are unapologetic, spiteful assholes in the beginning (middle, end…), which is very refreshing and original! Have no fear… they grow on you!

I loved the passive aggressive side that Gio showed Bryan (awful, but something we all can relate too I’m sure) and the bitchy & snarky conversations and internal dialogue from Keith and Gio both. This made for really entertaining reading, but then, I love me a good anti-hero…and here you get two for the price of one!
A good redemption story has such potential to really touch a reader, and this was an outstanding one!

I’m so impressed with how the author let all that anger and hurt turn into hesitant caring and then love. This is an amazing love story, because the MC’s fight it, and each other, so much, and they are far more vulnerable beneath all their armor than your average MC, especially Keith.
I honestly couldn’t put this book down!!

At a certain point, Keith’s past catches up with him, just when he’s finally starting to believe that love and happiness might be possible for him after all. Such a cruel move, Ms. Holmes!
It made the story even more intense though, so well done! But oh…poor Keith and Gio.

The epilogue is cute and very sweet, all the while staying true to the MC’s grouchy natures, that not even a HEA can take away completely.

Two princes.

Two vastly different cultures.

One contract that could save their peoples.

Prince Kylan of Dorvak is desperate to save his starving country. Hemmed in by looming mountains and the sea, there’s only one nation who can help them… the ship nation of Ysladre, barred from their shores years ago.

ShipSon Ferrin of the Ysladre Flotilla has never stepped foot on land, but if he is able to secure this alliance for his people, for his father, their names will be remembered for as long as their people sail the seas.

The agreement is simple:

If ShipSon Ferrin produces an heir for Prince Kylan, they will be wed, and their nations united.

But forces within the kingdom are shifting. Many chafe under the harsh rule of Kylan’s father. Some seek the opportunity to unseat Kylan’s family for good. The king opposes the possibility of alliance with Ysladre.

Kylan cares for his people, but as he falls in love with the delicate son of Ysladre, he also falls in love with his people—a feeling his father cannot and will not understand.

It’s a race against time to secure the alliance with a child before the people starve to death, a rebellion rises, or the king outright banishes Ferrin, the only man he’s ever loved.

Prince’s Gambit is Game of Thrones meets mpreg, with an arranged marriage, deception, passion, knotting, bloodshed, but a guaranteed HEA. (No main characters were killed in in the making of this book.)An Epic Mpreg Romance

An Epic Mpreg Romance.

Review

There were parts I really loved about this: the social commentary, the “stranger in a stange land” aspects, the unique shift of experienced omega and virginal alpha.   Those were interesting and well written.

What I didn’t care for was the relationship between the two MCs – I didn’t feel the emotional connection and their marriage still felt like a marriage of convenience even by the end.

It was interesting and I’d look for more in this series, but I wasn’t blown away.

Not enough shifting 🙁

Brand-new parole officer Noah Huxley is determined to see the good in men like CJ. After all, he knows firsthand that bad things can happen to good people. His colleagues mock his doe-eyed optimism, but Noah soon sees CJ’s bad attitude and bravado are weapons he uses to keep people at a distance.

(Book reviewed here previously)

This is such a wonderful, heartwarming story. It’s not Christmas themed, but it is absolutely something you’ll want to enjoy during the holiday season.

NR Walker is the MASTER at giving us characters who tug at your heartstrings, whom are prickly on the exterior and marshmallows on the interior. That’s CJ. Noah, of course, is undeterred by all the bluster and sees the man on the inside.

In addition to these guys really clicking in terms of personality, we’re also given an absolutely gorgeous chemistry that is also very sweet and tender.

If you’re a fan of the author, of underdog stories, or simply a person who wants a lovely happily ever after – this is the story for you!

Joel Leslie does another fantastic job – not only giving us Australian accents but different variants of Australian accents! I can’t imagine the research he must do!

In any case, he gives us – again – a wonderful portrayal of both the fear of falling in love for the first time as well as the emotional freedom that comes from being true to yourself.

Highly, highly recommended.

Blurb:

This collection contains the first three Bureau novellas:

Corruption

Once a proud demon of the night sky who carried nightmares to humans, Tenrael has spent decades in captivity as the star attraction of a traveling carnival. He exists in miserable servitude to men who plunk down ten dollars to fulfill their dark desires.
Charles Grimes is half human, half…something else. For 15 years he’s worked for the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs, ridding the country of dangerous monsters. When his boss sends him to Kansas to chase a rumor about a captive demon, Charles figures it’s just another assignment. Until he meets Tenrael.

Clay White

Someone – or something – is murdering young men in San Francisco. Clay White has been fired from the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs, but he’s determined to track down the killer. When he comes across a vampire named Marek, Clay assumes he’s caught the perp. But the encounter with Marek turns out to be more complicated than Clay expected, and it forces him to deal with his own troubled past and murky psyche.
As Clay discovers, sometimes the truth doesn’t come easy – and the monsters are not who we expect.

Creature

Alone in a cell and lacking memories of his past, John has no idea who – or what – he is. Alone on the streets of 1950s Los Angeles, Harry has far too many memories of his painful past and feels simply resignation in facing his empty future.

When Harry is given a chance to achieve his only dream – to become an agent with the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs – all he has to do is prove his worth. Yet nothing has ever come easy for him.
Now he must offer himself and John as bait, enticing a man who wants to conquer death. But first he and John must learn what distinguishes a monster from a man – and what a monster truly wants.

Review

Book reviewed here previously

This is a collection of stories that introduce the Bureau of Tran Species Affairs.
The stories are a little dark, somewhat film noir-ish, but interesting. I read and enjoyed Creature, (my favourite of the 3), as a standalone, so when I saw that Joel Leslie was narrating the trio of stories, I was more than happy to experience the collection. The stories connect, but are definitely self-contained standalones.

What can I say about ‘a Joel Leslie performance’ that hasn’t been said before? He brings life, character and a wealth of acting experience to the stories he narrates; so much so, that one becomes personally invested in the characters. In this case, he made me want to take Tenrael (Corruption) home to care for. And John (Creature), you could almost ‘see’ how he bloomed under Harry’s care – I could feel the affection and emotion he felt for Harry, life (such as it was) in general.
Joel Leslie, simply put, is a pleasure to listen to.

Some things are sweeter than revenge.
“I need a boyfriend.”
Hearing those words from his very straight, very ex-best friend doesn’t put Nate in a helpful mood. Not only did Kellan Brooks’s father destroy Nate’s family in his quest for power, but Kellan broke Nate’s heart back in high school. Nate thought he could trust his best friend with the revelation that he might be gay, only to find out he was horribly wrong and become the laughingstock of the whole school. Kellan must be truly desperate if he’s turning to Nate now.
Kellan’s through letting his father run his life, and he wants to make the man pay for cutting him off. What better way to stick it to the bigot than to come out as gay himself—especially with the son of the very man his father crushed on his quest for money and power. Kellan can’t blame Nate for wanting nothing to do with him, though. Kellan will have to convince him to play along, but it’s even harder to convince himself that the heat between them is only an act….

Review

This was originally published in 2011 and I feel even though that’s only 7 years ago, it does “date” this. There’s something about the extreme closeted/denial nature of this story that feels “older” than the books I’m reading published more recently. I think there is plenty of “secret” gayness still going on, but how it’s presented here feels more secretive than necessary – but appropriate for the time. If that makes sense.

On the one hand I feel so blessed that our society is opening up more and more to “other” and letting people be whom they are inside – and stories like this remind me of how far we’ve come. Or at least how far it feels we’ve come.

Besides that… this is a GFY, best friends to lovers story with a bit of denial thrown in for good measure. The angst is fairly high, but so is the humor and the chemistry.

I’m not a big fan of either of these guys as characters so I can’t say that I really loved this – I never warmed to Nate – but I can appreciate the ability of KA Mitchell to write “real” people.

I remember liking this the first time I read it the narrator helps to maintain that admiration. He sometimes felt a little “dramatic” but that was slight. In general he was easy to listen to, made the characters feel unique and didn’t distract from the story.

All in all I’d give the story a 3.5 of 5 stars, the narrator a 4 and round the overall up to a 4 of 5 stars as well.

Steamy Romance: Protecting His Omega by Giovanna Reaves

Blurb: Phoenix Harcourt is a single father who was kicked out of his home when his parents found out that he was an omega. After losing his alpha mate, Phoenix turned his focus to his daughter and the successful company that was left in his care. With a threat to his life, Phoenix hires a bodyguard who wants to protect more than his body. He also want’s Phoenix’s heart.

Hired to protect an omega, Lucius Payne had one goal: do his job and nothing else. He was never one to mix business with pleasure. Moreover, finding an omega mate was not in his plans, especially when it is the man he is supposed to protect. Then his job becomes more complicated than he was expecting.

Can Lucius convince Phoenix to trust him with his heart as well as his body?

Review: So, I’m late to the party for non-shifter, mpreg stories, but this is a good one to get started with.
Phoenix was kicked out of his home at 16 because he was an omega and gay. After being taken in by Maxwell, a rich businessman (father/son relationship), Phoenix thrives and eventually takes over Maxwell’s business when he dies. Phoenix was mated once and has a little girl, Jasmine from the relationship.
Not everyone at Phoenix’s company is happy that he is the new owner, so when he starts receiving threatening letters Phoenix is forced to contact a private security company. This is how he meets Lucius, his mate.
What I liked about the story is that Phoenix is not a typical omega – yes, he knows he will submit to his alpha’s will – but he has a backbone and wouldn’t give in to the natural instinct to rollover for his alpha mate. Lucius is a patient alpha, who wants to care for his omega. There is a lot of sexual tension between the 2 men before they finally get together – mid book- but it’s worth the wait! Both men were a delight to read and Jasmine was realistically cute.
There is a surprise twist towards the end that also adds to the story (quite unique).

Luckily, I got my first taste with a good story and will likely continue to dip my toes in the sub-genre.

Resigning himself to join a pack who already dislikes him on principal, Aeron has no idea how rocky the road ahead will be or how he’s going to spend the rest of his life with a man who hates him.

Review

I was surprised by the level of darkness in this story. I’m more used to this author’s humorous side and this was a bit different. Not a huge divergence, but striking to me.

In general the blurb sets this up nicely, and we get two enemies who must mate and their own attraction to one another coupled with circumstances helps them find love as well. The antagonist was suitably nasty as was the (predictable) evil uncle.

There was a lot of hot smexy times and though I didn’t always love Hunter, in the end everything turned out really well.

I thought the ending was believable in a way that some of these paranormal stories aren’t and I appreciated the author for that! My biggest complaint was I wanted Aeron to stick up for himself more and for the ILYs to be a little more believable.

Would you live a lie to hold onto the one you love?
Dean and Jason are best friends, like brothers since boyhood, now architecture students and college roommates. They’ve always had each other’s back, but when one walks in on the other with another man, everything changes. How do you explain to your best friend that he’s the one you’ve always wanted, that until now your life has been a lie?
Desperation and shame are two dirty words that run through Jason’s veins. He carries the scars from a wayward priest who stole his innocence and left him shattered. Meanwhile for years he’s watched Dean pursuing woman after woman, as his own heart slowly breaks.
When their world blows apart, they learn the powerful bond between them has more fire than either understood. Can two broken souls find the light in their darkness and come together to make a whole, or will sins of the past be forever unforgiven?

Review

This was a mixed bag for me. First, through no fault of the author, this is a really bad time for me to read anything remotely “angsty”. When I asked to review this – more than a year ago – I wasn’t as worried about our world – as I am today. Unfortunately we had some miscommunication and it took over a year for me to get the audio code and now… well, I’m in a different place.

However, the story itself is really good. There’s no denying that. The author does not pull ANY punches and if you have triggers – especially around molestation – please read the reviews that allude to the triggers. I don’t consider these things triggers for me personally but they were VERY disturbing and hard to read.

As for the romance – well- Dean is kind of a dick throughout most of the story and Jason is a pushover. That made it hard for me to root for these guys as a couple. Though I love the whole “discovering your gay side” stories – and that part was usually pretty dang hot! – the way Dean treated Jason before and after made it less … good.

The ending definitely ties things up for these guys and leaves us with a pretty solid HFN if not HEA.

What saved this – for me – was the dual narration. I think, had I been reading it, I’d have bailed. However, the narration was awesome! I really love dual narrators as I think they really help to differentiate the MCs so nicely!

I thought Eric London and Iggy Toma were well suited to their MCs and did an excellent job with the emotion, the timing and helping to immerse the listener in the story. For that reason I’d definitely recommend this, though I had reservations about the story itself.
