* Novel-length expansion of original short story found in Charmed & Dangerous anthology. *

Welcome to Dim Sum Asylum: a San Francisco where it’s a ho-hum kind of case when a cop has to chase down an enchanted two-foot-tall shrine god statue with an impressive Fu Manchu mustache that’s running around Chinatown, trolling sex magic and chaos in its wake.
Senior Inspector Roku MacCormick of the Chinatown Arcane Crimes Division faces a pile of challenges far beyond his human-faerie heritage, snarling dragons guarding C-Town’s multiple gates, and exploding noodle factories. After a case goes sideways, Roku is saddled with Trent Leonard, a new partner he can’t trust, to add to the crime syndicate family he doesn’t want and a spell-casting serial killer he desperately needs to find.
While Roku would rather stay home with Bob the Cat and whiskey himself to sleep, he puts on his badge and gun every day, determined to serve and protect the city he loves. When Chinatown’s dark mystical underworld makes his life hell and the case turns deadly, Trent guards Roku’s back and, if Trent can be believed, his heart… even if from what Roku can see, Trent is as dangerous as the monsters and criminals they’re sworn to bring down.

Review

While we’ve reviewed this book on the site before, I feel that – with the listening – I wanted to amend some things.

First, as was said before – this is another great example of how Rhys Ford has a crazy wonderful imagination and an absolutely awe-inspiring talent for description.

She has created a fully developed, intricate and unique new world here and manages to give the reader/listener the set up without an “info dump”. This is a rare and wonderful gift.

Rhys is also amazing at metaphors and descriptions that make the reader/listener hear, feel, smell, taste and touch the story she is creating. I can think of few writers who match her in this skill.

What I didn’t focus on as I was reading it – and that is the magic of audiobooks – they really can change your impression of a story – is how DARK it is. Every day it rained, every day poor Roku got injured again and again – every day we were reminded of the death and destruction in Roku’s world.

The other part I didn’t quite “see” when I was reading this was how little the relationship between Roku and Trent really develops – even by the end.

I guess, when I was reading this, I must have skimmed all the violence and focused on the very cute and funny relationship parts and my brain gave them more weight. Upon re-visiting this, the main story is really about Roku and his struggles in the world and his relationship with Trent is a small part of this.

If this were to be expanded to a series I could see the relationship deepening and becoming more of a “thing” but as it stands I think I’d call this Romantic Fiction more than a romance – because the mystery and the main character development supersede the romance – IMHO.

It was still an amazing story that absolutely enthralls the reader/listener – but it wasn’t as romantic as I’d remembered.

Audio

Greg and Rhys are a powerhouse team and he was absolutely the best choice for this narration! He’s got all those Chinese and Japanese words down and they flow effortlessly off his tongue. I had to keep reminding myself that this wasn’t Rhys’ other series – Cole McGinnis – because Trent reminded me so much of Bobby – both in voice and characterization! In a way this is kind of a paranormal Cole McGinnis – and I don’t mean that in a bad way at all!

In any case, this was an amazing way to experience this fantastic story and highly recommended to fans of the author, urban fantasy and romantic crime stories.

“When the broken man with scarred skin walked into Heathens, asked for a job, and showed me a sketch of a phoenix, it felt like fate.”~ Adam

It started with an anonymous post by someone who didn’t want to live anymore. I read it over and over again, unable to get it out of my mind. What if my brother Johnny had posted something like this before he’d taken his own life? Would someone have been able to save him?

I’ve been living a lie for 16 long years and I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to keep it up. And when a beautiful, broken man walks into my tattoo shop asking for a second chance at life, I know I’ll never be able to turn him away.

“When I was so far down I couldn’t even see the light, a stranger reached in to save me”~ Nox
I didn’t have anything to live for, until a kind stranger pulled me back from the brink. With physical and emotional scars I have nowhere to turn now but to that same stranger who saved my life without realizing it. But as my feelings for Adam grow, will I ever be anything other than a surrogate for the brother he couldn’t save? Am I even worthy of his love?

**From Ashes is the third book in the Heathens Ink series, each book in the series CAN be read as a standalone.

CAUTION: this book contains graphic descriptions of domestic violence and drug use that may be disturbing to some readers.

Review

Though the author stresses that this can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the other books in the series first. I agree that you can figure things out without having read them, but I do think they give a bit of background that is helpful.

Continuing the theme of hurt/comfort – we have another set of people who come together with a tragic past to find love. I was pleased that we didn’t spend pages and pages before everyone’s true identities are revealed. That can get tedious. I was also pleased by the response Adam had when Nox revealed his secret. That was actually one of my favorite parts of the story.

Unfortunately, for a lot of the story Adam really, really made me mad. I didn’t understand his need for secrecy and I couldn’t believe that he’d ask Nox – with his past – to go into hiding like he did. That INFURIATED me and made me want to quit reading.

Nox is soooo sweet and has such an amazing strength to him. Adam not only asked him to hide but was so dismissive of his VERY VALID fears. I couldn’t believe how he brushed aside all Nox’s worries and was so self-involved.

I didn’t care for Adam’s ex and it spoke poorly of him that he’d be willing to spend so many years with her just because the sex was good.

Speaking of the ex – she seemed a bit “too” psychotic – she felt like more of a caricature than an actual person – and she was difficult to take seriously.

I’m very intrigued by the next story – hinted at in this and glimpsed at in the end – but this wasn’t my favorite book in the series by a long shot.

I still recommend the author and series, but I wasn’t a big fan of this installment.

Fool of Main Beach (Love in Laguna #5) by Tara Lain

Merle Justice wants to reach for the stars, but it’s tough to get respect when playing a teenybopper vampire on TV. Then he meets a famous director anxious to give him all he thinks he wants—and maybe a bit more. Everything’s looking up until a life-threatening encounter with some homophobes on Main Beach puts Merle face-to-face with a Sasquatch-sized hero in a pink puffer coat.

Tom Henry defies description. As unsophisticated and simple as an angel, he walks through life content with who he is and asking for very little except to care for his sister, Lily, and the dogs he loves. Then he meets Merle, the embodiment of dreams he barely knows he has. Merle knows the people who hold his future in their hands might love Tom—but they’ll never understand Merle and Tom together. Tom knows it too. With lives this far apart, who’s really the fool of Main Beach?

Review

I LOVED THIS!

Tom is sooooo freakin’ adorable and Merle is (almost) perfect for him!

There were so many times that I was absolutely BAWLING while I read this. Poor Tom had such a low opinion of himself and I was HATING Merle for not seeing how fabulous he was for such a long time! I was also furious with Tom’s sister and – the fact that I felt all those emotions so strongly goes to show just what a great job Tara Lain did!

I have to admit, it was a close call – Merle ALMOST didn’t make me love him. He’s pretty self-involved and I wasn’t ever as attached to him as I was to Tom – BUT – he does manage to see the light and make me believe that he’s good enough for Tom by the end. (However, if he’d done a bit more groveling this might have been a 6 star book 😉 )

This book had me right from the start and I couldn’t put it down. I was totally invested in Tom’s happiness and I wanted to see him find his true love so badly! It was great seeing some of the previous MCs from the series – but this was Tom’s story (more than Merle’s) and for that it was perfect!

If you’re a fan of the series or new to it, you’re going to want to read this. For fans of hurt/comfort or books about people with disabilities I think this will absolutely make your day. I think Tara did a great job of not actually ever “labeling” Tom and yet it’s clear what his situation is.

Usually I’m not a “Hollywood/Actor” fan – and this was still amazing!

Highly recommended!

(I love the cover too!)

Sequel to The Soldati Prince
Soldati Hearts: Book Two

Foxling Toka has served the Soldati king for centuries, and now he attends to the kingdom’s cherished Soldati prince. It’s a position of honor, and as Toka helps the once-human prince adapt to their magical realm, he finds joy in their friendship. He also grows bolder in his encounters with Rayner, Soldati warrior and the king’s second. But the laws are clear: servants and Soldati are not permitted to mate. It doesn’t matter that Toka lost his heart to the dashing cad long ago.

Rayner never imagined he would fall in love with a servant, but the clever and beautiful foxling has ensnared him, and he resents the regulations keeping them apart. When an arrogant and spiteful king visits from a neighboring realm, Rayner is in danger of losing everything. But Soldati warriors don’t surrender, and he intends to fight all the harder to keep Toka where he belongs—in Rayner’s arms.

Review

Charlie should write these types of “fairytales” FOREVER!

While I’m a big fan of her THIRDS stories, I think she is truly EXCEPTIONAL when it comes to her fairy tale type stories. This, her Christmas series (https://www.goodreads.com/series/117423-north-pole-city-tales) and her Intrepid series (https://www.goodreads.com/series/103030-a-little-bite-of-love) just absolutely GLOW with her creativity!

THIRDS is funny and sexy and witty, but these series are super creative and whimsical as well as deeply romantic and touching.

First, let’s address that cover – GORGEOUS and so spot on!

Second, OMG Toka and Rayner are so sweet together! I loved how they both were willing to go to extremes for the other and their love. So romantic!!

It was great seeing Riley keep Khalon in control – heh heh. Riley is a great character and I was glad to see him so often throughout this story.

The shifting and the fact that our MCs mannerisms are so like their animal halves is fantastic! So often shifting is just something they do rather than who the character is. Right down to his human coloring, Toka is a fox!

The magic, the mystery, the romance, the action and the sacrifices and the HEA – all superlative.

I can’t recommend this enough and I hope you read book one first because it’s important and awesome.

Hopefully someone amazing will do these in audio format and SOON!

Gideon Jane earned the name Ghost for his reclusive nature when he joined a group of guys in Powers, Georgia in a band called Executioners. It had been his way of settling into small town life after living in New York for the past twenty years. He loved the band and his small organic farm. What he didn’t love was being single, but it appeared it was his new reality. He didn’t want his ex back, although he did want something. What that was eluded him until the evening he walked into Nightingale’s Books.

Small town girl Harper Sage knew pain, and she’d lived with it—she had the scars both mental and physical to prove it. It would’ve been easier to hop in her car to find safety and anonymity, but Harper stayed to prove she was stronger than hurled fists and bruising prejudice. She found herself within the safety of a close-knit group of rough bikers and bar bouncers. That didn’t mean it was all perfect.

What’s a girl to do when she craves normalcy and acceptance: she just smiles. Choices are made, some with dire consequences and others that bring her closer to her dream. Will she make the right decision or finally discover escape is her best option?

Author Note: This book contains scenes of violence and descriptions of self-harm.

Review

I was both really dreading this and anticipating the hell out of it!

I KNEW Harper’s story was going to be rough – everything leading up to gave the impression that she knew nothing but pain in her life – well, this shows just how awful her life has been – worse than I thought. My heart ached for her and I was so, so pleased for her to find someone who could love her like she needed to be loved.

I thought the author handled the sex scenes very gracefully and with a lot of tenderness and dignity while not pulling any punches nor sacrificing any sensuality or emotion without being clinical or abrasive.

Shane Wallace has made a decent life for himself in Last Chance. He built his own home on his mom’s property to take care of her, owns an automotive repair shop, and when he wants to get laid, Portland isn’t too far away. Not too shabby for the boy who spent his childhood getting bullied and feeling alone. Shane’s content to leave his past behind him…until one of his childhood tormentors comes back to town.

Maxwell Sullivan never planned to step foot in Last Chance again. Here, he was Maxwell, a teen who suffered in silence while everyone thought he had the perfect life. Now, he’s “Van,” the erotic artist and photographer. He’s only here to help his mom tie up some loose ends after his father’s death and to apologize to Shane. After that, he’s heading back to LA for good.

Shane never thought he’d have anything in common with Maxwell, but there’s a depth to Van that surprises him. Van knows what it feels like to be alone. He sees Shane in ways no one else does. There’s a shared connection neither can deny. Somehow, despite their rocky history, they get each other.

It’s not long before the two are so drawn to each other that they tumble into bed—sometimes with Van’s camera involved. Their chemistry in and out of the bedroom is undeniable. Except nothing is ever black and white. Shane can’t leave his mom and Van’s life is in LA. With two different lives pulling them in opposite directions, their picture-perfect ending might not be in the cards.

Review

This is the Riley Hart I fell in love with the first time I read Collide!

Riley has an amazing ability to tell the story of two guys finding love where it really shouldn’t “be”. There’s no way Shane and “Van” should get along and there’s no way Shane could ever forgive Van and there’s no way Van would ever be willing to compromise… but somehow they do!

I really appreciate the fact that Riley has the writing chops to make the reader believe in these guys and their story. There are no gaping plot holes, no giant suspensions of disbelief, just a few well placed “human” moments where people bend and flex enough to allow for something that normally wouldn’t happened to happen.

In addition to giving us a really believable story, she has also given us an amazingly tender, thoughtful and SUPER SEXY story!

Shane’s mother’s struggle is so real and I found myself rooting for her just as much as for the boys.

While I couldn’t understand Van’s mother or her situation much, I appreciated the fact that there was no “miracle cure” to be found, and that sometimes you just get what you get.

I am including this review in my “kink” month because I think that Shane has a definite “exhibitionism” kink. While he might not admit it (yet!) he likes to be watched and loves having his picture taken especially when having sex. I think this book had some of the hottest sex scenes I’ve read in a Riley Hart book (writing alone).

This is a book you can’t put down and I loved it very, very much. Highly recommended!

Queeny cocktail waiter Lionel wakes up to find himself in bed with Dog, a straight-acting softball player, and the two embark on a rocky road to romance. A journey that requires coming out of the closet, going into the closet, a pair of red high heels, many pairs of red high heels, a failed intervention, a couple of aborted dates, and homemade pom-poms. Mostly, Lionel and Dog learn what it means to be a man.

Review
I’ve never read (listened to) any books by Marshall Thornton before and I have been missing out. I didn’t know what to expect, the blurb sounded interesting and I am so happy I got to listen to it. This book is so much fun. Lionel is a wonderful strong character, so sarcastic and funny with brilliant one liners. The way he deals with inept Doug (Dog) is marvellous. The dates they almost go on had me glued with anticipation because I just couldn’t see how Dog and Lionel were going to get anywhere. But they do make it in the end. Masterful writing to give us such a fun book with the sub text of believing in yourself and being true to yourself and don’t give in to stereotypes.

The story switches between Lionel and Dog’s points of view so we get the whole picture. I have to say Joel Leslie’s narration is superb. He brings such an energy to the story. The voices chosen for Lionel and Doug suit them so well I can visualise them. The secondary characters also shine. My favourites are Lionel’s friend Carlos (Carlotta) and Dog’s Sister Madison, they are so amusing.

This has everything I want in an audiobook, great story and brilliant narration. I highly recommend it.

Sometimes love just catches you by the tail.

Chayton Winston is a veterinarian. He is also a werewolf. Much to his Native American parent’s chagrin, he has always dreamed of a fair-haired, Caucasian mate. However, he never imagined his mate would be male. As a heterosexual man, he’s not quite sure what to do with a male mate, but more than willing to find out.

Keaton Reynolds wakes up, in wolf form, and finds himself with a mate. He’s instantly attracted, but not so thrilled to find out the man is straight. Having been in a relationship once before where his partner professed to be “Not gay” left a bad taste in his mouth. Keaton wants to make a break for it and pretend he never set eyes on Chay-but Chay is not ready to let him go.

Together the two work to solidify their shaky relationship and battle the prejudices against homosexuals. Chay must deal with not only his mother’s prejudices against gay men but also her hatred of white people.

When a power struggle in Keaton’s pack threatens Keaton’s life, the two men learn to depend on one another and their relationship to get them through it.

Review

This is one of the first few m/m/shifter books I read and it set the standard for me. I just LOVE this book and how funny/sweet/sexy/adventurous the story is.

We have two shifters – one who really thought he was straight (though he gave his roommate a handy in college) and one who knows he’s gay but figures he’ll never mate because there are “no gay shifters”.

The other aspect of the story I love is that Keaton is smaller but has this amazing power that everyone underestimates until they get to know him! I love rooting for the little guy!

We’ve got some interesting tension in that Chay’s family is Native American and there is some racism when it’s discovered Keaton – who is not – is his mate.

The smexy times are hot and the dialog is witty and the story moves quickly. I’ve read this several times and can highly recommend it!

A bounty hunter’s partners to lovers’ story.
The hunt is on… and he’s the prey.

Bradford (Ford) King was sure he had the rest of his life mapped out. Though he was no longer a SEAL Lieutenant, his brother was home safe and he had a job that still allowed him to satisfy his hunger for hunting bad guys. Life was simple, no distractions or complications – at age forty-six – that’s all Ford wanted. What he didn’t want was his work partner, sniper/watchman, Dana, giving him s**t all the time.

Dana Cadby had grown up labeled a roughneck from the wrong side of the tracks. He’d fought, scrounged, and survived despite a father that constantly told him he couldn’t. Dana pulled himself up by his own boot straps and made a name for himself in the marksman community. He’d been Duke’s bounty watchman for five years. It was his job to ensure their safety, watch their backs. At thirty-three, he was trusted, well respected by his peers, his bosses, his friends… so why couldn’t he earn the same respect from his partner?

Dana knew he was bisexual before he graduated high school. He also knew he was attracted to the huge, 6’3”, SEAL from the moment he and his brother came to join their team. It wasn’t easy for him to tamp down his immediate reaction to Ford’s thick muscles, full beard, and dark eyes. Still, Dana exhibited nothing but professionalism towards him, not wanting to make his ‘straight’ partner uncomfortable. So why did Ford constantly give him hell?

After Dana took back his ex-girlfriend, he’d noticed an intensification in Ford’s bad attitude. One that turned aggressive and downright antagonistic, and Dana was damned if he’d just lay down and take it. He was gonna make that man respect him if it was the last thing he did.

When Duke sends Dana and Ford out to track down their most dangerous bounty yet, they both embrace the fact that they make one hell of a team… but they fight tooth and nail against the powerful intimacy brewing between them.
Beware: If Ford and Dana connect completely, god help the fugitive who’s in the sights of the hunter and his watchman.

This story is a part of a series but can stand alone. It does not end on a cliffhanger and has a HEA.

Review

This is another great story in AE Via’s series about bounty hunters. Dana and Duke are both “real” men – with imperfections and foibles and I love that the author doesn’t try to smooth those edges too much.

Via’s signature hot smexy times are in abundance, but so are her feelz.

The beginning was a bit rocky but once the story gained it’s feet and our MCs found themselves entangled, the story flew by. (Honestly, the girlfriend and Dana’s inability to see how terrible a person she was really bothered me. I wanted her gone right from the start. I wasn’t sure why we had so much time with her on page – and this kept me from LOVING this as much as I’ve loved others in the series.)

I always enjoy Via’s characters and her very satisfying HEAs.

Highly recommended to fans of the author, the series and bad boys!

Stig Minton doesn’t remember what virginity felt like. Twelve years older than Ryder, he’s been around the block too many times to count and has the scars to prove it…both physically and mentally.

But as these two men come together to help with a wedding, they forge a friendship, a friendship they both desperately need. As their relationship evolves, feelings go deeper. But is it stupid to risk this new—and, yes necessary—bond in pursuit of something that’s doomed to fail?

They both think they’re too broken to make this work. But what if they’re wrong?

Two broken souls may just be able to find reparation in one another.

Book #2 in the Found Series.

Review

I was soooo happy to see this book! I had absolutely loved book one – review here: https://openskyebookreviews.com/found-at-the-library-by-christi-snow/– and I also really love hurt/comfort books so…

I absolutely adored Ryder. He is a fantastic character and was so easy to love. Stig was a bit harder for me, especially in the beginning. Stig has some “issues” that make him like things that are difficult to appreciate. He’s also not the best boyfriend – but he absolutely comes through in the end and is totally deserving of Ryder.

It was great seeing Tommy and Mac (the MCs from book one) again – but they really only make some brief pit stops.

The smexy times are pretty hot, but don’t overwhelm the story. There’s a bit of danger – and – if anything – this would be the part of the story I liked the least. I didn’t think our guys needed MORE hurdles to overcome – they had quite enough. The BDSM part – which is tied to this danger – was something I didn’t quite gel with either – but it does illustrate just how complex a man Stig really is.

(Ryder’s art and how he makes it is FASCINATING!)

I couldn’t put this down and I loved it – book one is still my favorite – but this is a very worthy sequel.

Highly recommended!
