July’s Theme is Audiobooks and Our Favorite Narrators – with a Giveaway!

(Yes, we know June is technically Audiobook month but… well… we wanted it to be July!)

All of us at Open Skye really enjoy audiobooks. You can see that pretty much every LGBT audiobook released gets listened to and enjoyed by at least one of us – as our tastes are pretty diverse. As a result we couldn’t really focus on our “favorites” because we’ve already reviewed them for you here (though there are some we’d like to showcase.)

So we decided to mix in some favorites with some new releases done by some of our favorite narrators. This month, in addition to the normal amount of audiobook reviews we’re used to doing, look for some additional “retro reviews” and favorites!

Why We Love Audiobooks: July 20th

Favorite Audiobooks From Our Reviewers: July 27th

We’re also running a contest! Each time you comment on an audiobook review your name will be entered into a drawing – at the end of the month one winner will be drawn and you’ll receive $20 credit from Amazon for choosing your own audiobook! (We can’t give audiobook credits unfortunately due to Audible’s strange new policies. ☹ )*

*Must be able to win via email and prize is in US dollars.  Giveaway closes July 31st. Winner will be emailed by the August 15, 2017.

Naughty Cupid by Deanna Wadsworth (GRL author) Tour and Giveaway!

OS:  Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Deanna Wadsworth of Naughty Cupid.

Hi, Deanna, thank you for agreeing give us ten tips for becoming a better writer. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Hi guys! Thanks for hosting me!

I have published my fair share of books (20 and counting) and during that time I have learned a few tips for those aspiring writers or those just looking to get more organized.

Here is a list of my top ten:

  1. Write every day, even if it’s just re reading what you wrote the day before. This keeps your books fresh in your mind
  1. Be active on social media because no one will see your books like you do if you aren’t seen you get forgotten
  1. Get a smart phone, it makes # 9 easier
  1. Be open to criticism. Get a critique partner who doesn’t go easy on you and be humble and listen
  1. Support your fellow authors. Never tear them down, even if their book stunk LOL
  1. NEVER read your book reviews after you have been drinking. I think that’s self-explanatory LOL
  1. Join a writing organization like Rainbow Romance Writers because you need to have a support system
  1. Call yourself a writer when you meet people.
  1. Don’t treat it like a hobby. If you consider your writing time “work” and call it that to others, they will respect your career (even if you aren’t making any money yet LOL)

And the #1 thing you need to remember as a writer is:

Read read and read some more. If you don’t read books you will forget why you are telling your own stories!

~Deanna

OS: Thanks for the great advice!  Good Luck with the rest of your tour!

NaughtyCupidFSBlurb:

The name’s Lio, and you may have read the beginning of my story in A Cupid’s Wager. Well, hold on to you hats, because there’s more to tell about your favorite cupid working in the Gay Division of the Inter-Dimensional Association of Cupids.

Remember Ethan? That Aztec god of the winds who busted me shooting a closeted human with a gay lust arrow? Yeah, I haven’t been able to forget him either. Even though I have a rule against getting it on with other supernaturals—especially ones working for the Straight Division—my magic is drawn to Ethan and all his tattoos and piercings in a way I cannot control.

But after that night of mind-numbing sex, now I gotta face my evil ex-boyfriend and a suspension by the IDAC for “misplacing” arrows. They took my quiver, and I have to figure out how to get my arrow privileges back before they’re taken forever.

Ethan seems to think he can help me, but I don’t know how anybody can make this cupid believe in love again.

A Mended Man (Men of Halfway House Book 4) by Jaime Reese and CONTEST!

29774034Blurb

A story of healing and confronting demons…

Detective Aidan Calloway is rock-solid strong. He’s a man of justice—loyal to his friends, family, and job—even if it requires bending a law…or two. He shields himself behind an abrasive, fearless facade, until a phone call one night chips his armor and throws his perfectly planned, hollow life into a tailspin.

Jessie Vega is the epitome of optimism. His carefully crafted attitude of hope and positivity protects him from a past filled with too much pain. When a ghost from a dark time resurfaces and nearly breaks him, he must tap into his inner strength or risk losing everything he’s worked so hard to build.

But Jessie can’t do it alone. He must fight to break through Aidan’s ironclad defenses to reveal the heart of the man hiding beneath the tough surface and mend his damaged spirit. Only then can they truly heal and become strong enough to battle the demons that haunt them and threaten their chance to finally be together.

Review

This is a LONG book – the longest so far (I believe) in the series.

Though I think it could technically be read as a standalone, I don’t recommend it. So much is laid down in the earlier books about Jess and Aidan as well as Ty and Cole, Hunter and Cam that you’d be missing out not to know their stories first. Plus, they’re awesome, so read them if you haven’t!

In any case, Jess and Aidan have already done their “dance” of “friendship” in earlier stories, so we hit them mid-stride. They’re friends – very close friends – but nothing romantic. In fact, it’s still questionable whether or not Aidan is even gay!

When the story starts out, Jess is injured and this forces Aidan to show his hand. He cares for Jess way more than a “bud” and it’s hard for Aidan to feel this way. (Be warned, there are a lot of triggers in this book – rape, abuse, torture, but very little of it is on page.)

The vast majority of the book is Aidan slowly opening up to Jess. He’s kept himself away from anyone for years after his time in the service (for Reasons) and though he longs for what Ty and Hunter have, he somehow feels he can’t have that (also for Reasons).

Jess, on the other hand, is practically an open book. Though his story is no less harrowing than Aidan’s he tells it all right away and in that sense acts as a tremendous release valve for Aidan.

Eventually, the couple becomes a true couple and we get to see their HEA – but it’s hard won. So many hurdles to be overcome, but the results are so worth it.

**

I had been looking forward to this FOREVER. I’ve been a huge fan of the series since it’s beginning and in my opinion Book Three eclipsed Books One and Two but that doesn’t diminish 1 & 2, it’s just that Jaime’s writing keeps getting stronger and stronger as she publishes.

I was a bit daunted by the length of this – it told me there was going to be a lot of angst – and I was right. Boy Howdy! There’s a lot of angst in this book. Aidan is like the King of the Universe of Angst. And Jess – who was kidnapped and tortured for years, is like a ray of sunshine compared to Aidan!

Since the couple had already met and be-friended one another I was curious what the hold up was going to be – well – it’s Aidan’s fear of intimacy.   That ends up being the focus for about 70% of the book.

While I absolutely loved the writing, found the slow burn and snail-like progress on the romance realistic and well done, I have to admit that I thought the book was a bit too long. (Gasp!) I know. I hate to say it. Because I truly ADORE Reese and this series – but I just wanted a bit more forward momentum – not necessarily sex – but emotional intimacy. I guess you could say we (as readers) get to feel what Jess felt – but I got bogged down in it and frustrated at times in the middle section of the book where it seemed like nothing was moving in the relationship front or the solving the crime front.

But… except for that one niggle, the rest of the book is truly glorious. The way Jess keeps at Aidan is wonderful and really shows us that you don’t have to be the Alpha to have a spine – Thank God! The slowly opening flower that is Aidan’s love is remarkable to watch and experience and really portrayed elegantly in this story.  I also loved seeing all the guys again- Cole remains my absolute favorite! – and I was so pleased for Hunter and Cam!

In the end, I still loved the book and highly recommend it, but it didn’t surpass Book three as my favorite.

Of course Jaime’s cover is so gorgeous, I kept flipping back to it to study Aidan’s ink! (not his abs! Never! 😉

Excerpt

From Trash and Treasure by M.D. Grimm

Some of the coldness left Ronan’s eyes. He seemed confused again. Why did Tucker seem to confuse Ronan so much?

Then it happened. Ronan nodded. “Deal.”

Tucker barely stopped himself from gaping again. It worked? He was going to have sex? He was going to have sex! He didn’t let himself think about how long it had been since his last partner. It would only depress him. He knew what to do… mostly.

Tucker tossed the ball underhand to Ronan, who caught it with a startled expression.

“What?” Tucker said. “It’s not like you can go anywhere. Your ship’s caput and even if you tried to hack into my navigation system, you wouldn’t get far. My ma designed it and she was the best there was. Just letting you know in case you had a thought of bashing me over the head and commandeering my ride.”

Ronan looked insulted. “I would never do such a thing. I am not a thief or vagabond.”

“Then what are you?”

Ronan’s mouth pulled into a thin line. Tucker shrugged. “Fine. Keep your secrets. Come on, follow me. Let’s both take a well-needed shower.” A blush suddenly crept up his face. “I mean, a shower separately. Let’s take a shower—oh, never mind. Just come on.”

He turned his back on Ronan and called himself an idiot. He dearly hoped he wasn’t making a huge mistake. But he wouldn’t go back on it now. He really, really wanted to have sex.

Tempeste O’Riley Guest Post and Giveaway!

13106711_10156802171995414_1691349163_o

OS: Welcome to Tempeste O’Riley author of Dreamer’s Destiny!  It’s great to have you here today Tempeste!

TO: Thanks for having me!

OS: Can you tell me something about your new story Dreamer’s Destiny?

TO: Sure!  First an excerpt:

How did you tell your aunt you were living an entire dream life? One where he had the life like he’d always wanted when he was awake? Yeah… that didn’t sound nuthouse worthy at all, nope!

TO: As you can see from the brief excerpt above, Liam’s life is anything but simple early in the story. He’s living his life in the real world, but he’s also got the whole thing going on in dreams with Cam… and it’s obviously a life that he doesn’t want to give up every morning. How would you feel if you had not only a dream life, with a lover you not only wanted but had basically been in a relationship with for years, but that you wanted to be with? Yeah, not to simple. That’s one of the major issues, times two, happening here. Remember Cam is part of this conundrum too. He’s sharing dreams with Liam, so it’s not just poor Liam waking up missing his lover every morning, trying to have a ‘normal’ life.

But what do you do and how do you every share that life trauma? Well, for Liam, he eventually decides he has to… not wants but has to. It was a fun scene to write as Liam was kinda having a teeny tiny meltdown by that point, convinced he was really going crazy. After all, as he says at a different point “People don’t just materialize into reality simply because you want them so desperately, waking up breaks your heart.”

So, what would you do, if it were you?

OS: That’s a great question Tempeste – I think I’d love to hear what our readers would say to that.  I know I found your book fascinating and I hope we see more from this universe.  Thanks for dropping by!

Liam Grady is the owner of the Feathered Quill, a quirky little bookstore in Asheville, and—though he doesn’t realize it yet—a dream walker. His last relationship failed almost a year ago, and he’s not had the interest or nerve to pursue anyone he’s met since.

Cameron Danu is a tattoo artist from rural Georgia. Cameron is left without a job after his boss, Jose, is forced to close the shop after a heart attack. When Cameron learns Jose has set up an interview for him at a small tattoo parlor in Asheville, he hopes for a fresh start in a new town.

Fate brings Cameron and Liam together, and they realize they’ve met before—in their dreams. A chance encounter and a winged tattoo might lead them to their destiny—if fear doesn’t turn their dreams into a nightmare.

Excerpt:

Two days later, Liam stood in a kitchen he knew, but he was uncertain how he had ended up there. He looked around and found Cam bent over, rummaging in the fridge, his pert little butt in nothing but a pair of tight boxer briefs. Liam groaned as he moved closer to Cam and slid his hands over the smooth cotton, feeling the tight muscles beneath flex as Cam jumped and spun around.

“Dammit, Lee, don’t sneak up on me like that,” Cam groused, though the pout was ruined when the edges of his lips turned up in a small smile.

“Sorry, beautiful, but how could I resist such a tempting and delicious offering?”

“Uh-uh. Stroking the ego won’t help you this time.”

Liam smirked and slid one hand down to lightly rub up and down Cam’s length. Cam’s eyes closed as a low moan slipped out. His hips pushed forward, his body begging for touch. “Your ego wasn’t what I had in mind, baby.”

“Oh, God, Liam. Please,” Cam begged. He threaded one hand into Liam’s hair and tugged him down until their lips met in a hard clashing of teeth, tongue, and yum.

Liam slipped one hand inside Cam’s briefs, then wrapped his fingers around the hard shaft that had been hiding within. He pulled and stroked the hot, hard flesh as he continued to kiss Cam as if he hadn’t touched Cam in ages. He wanted Cam so bad he couldn’t think straight.

He captured the moans Cam let out as they continued to devour each other, relishing each one as if it were his first and last ever. Liam clutched at Cam’s hip, desperate for his lover’s touch. He ripped his mouth away, panting for breath, never letting up on his slow pumping of Cam’s cock.

“So prefect,” he panted, relishing the little mewling sounds Cam made every time Liam skated his fingers over Cam’s cockhead, how Cam’s eyes were blown wide in desire.

“I need you in me, Lee. I don’t wanna wait….”

Liam grabbed Cam’s briefs and tore them off his tight little body, desperate to be back inside his Cam. After slamming Cam against the wall, Liam kicked Cam’s feet apart before he dropped to his knees and swallowed Cam whole.

Cam screamed, but Liam didn’t care. He was going to take everything Cam offered and then some! Setting a fast pace, he bobbed up and down on Cam’s straining cock, making it wet and slippery. Using some of the excess wetness, he slipped his fingers behind Cam’s balls, rubbing them along Cam’s taint until he reached Cam’s tight hole. Teasing and tapping Cam’s needy entrance, Liam shivered as precome squirted on his tongue, the taste making him even harder than before.

Shaking above him, Cam pushed back against Liam’s fingers, begging with both words and action for exactly what Liam wanted to give.

Jamie Dean Guest Post and Contest – Not Just Passing Through

book tour

A Big Open Skye Welcome to Jamie Dean, author of Not Just Passing Through.

Thanks for stopping by!

Jamie Dean, here. Author of the new book Not Just Passing Through and full-time troublemaker.
Recently, I had a dream that my writers’ critique group (if you’re not a writer—or even if you are—you might not know that’s a thing, but it is, and it’s kind of awesome) went to a sort of conference, where we had to write down—and then read out on stage—a list of our “turn ons.” In other words, a list of things that inspired us when we were writing. I woke up being intrigued and a little impressed that my brain was being so philosophical (also ignoring that the dream devolved into my being chased by roller derby girls who were trying to kill me with flying cars).
I don’t remember everything I wrote on my list, but the two I do remember vividly were “sleepy cuddles” and “gay boys kissing.” I’m guessing that second one is what most of you are here to read about (If it’s the roller girls, I’m pretty sure you’re in the wrong place).
Those two things stuck with me when I woke for a few reasons. One being because I’ve heard before that you’re not supposed to be able to read or write in dreams, but I wrote and could read those words quite clearly. Those two things also stuck with me because when I woke up, they were true, which is so rarely the case with things you say in your dreams. “Airlift robots can’t ride this roller coaster, Farthington!” is more typical of the kind of weird shit my brain normally marches out during dreams, so when it tells me the truth, I listen.
I’ve been told in many ways that the erotic—gay boys kissing, if you will—part of my erotic male/male romances is good—”hawt” “hot” “smutty deliciousness”—but the romantic aspect (this is where sleepy cuddles comes in) is just as important to me. And not just the sweet, falling in love kind of romance. The “so rife with angst it gives you actual chest pains” kind of romance. It’s gotta hurt before it feels better. That’s the kind of thing I love to read and that’s the kind of thing I love to write. I want the love to feel impossible, even if we know—it being a romance novel—that it isn’t impossible. That’s the beauty of romance, isn’t it? The idea that love conquers all? That’s the beauty of life, come to think of it.
What about you, Reader? What do you dream about? What do you love to read about most: the angst, the romance, or the smut? Talk to me about it in the comments below, or look me up all over the web by the handle JamieDeanWrites.

Blurb: Socially awkward, closeted virgin Avery Malcolm passes his days and nights running his bigoted aunt’s motel in rural New Mexico. He dreams of getting away and hitting the road, but with one friend, a few acquaintances, and no real life to speak of outside his duties as front desk clerk, he doesn’t know if he’ll ever get a chance.

Fate sends hot drifter Chase Lancaster to the Red Ram Motel, riding in on his sexy black motorcycle. Within twenty-four hours, Avery’s life is turned upside down. Before long, even though Chase’s sexual interests seem to run exclusively toward women in bars, Avery finds himself falling for the beautiful biker with no permanent address. Chase is much more than his bad boy persona, so while it’s nice to have another friend, Avery doesn’t know how he’ll survive with his heart intact when Chase inevitably moves on.

Bio: Jamie Dean is passionate about food, beer, and hot men wading together through a sea of angst, sarcasm and sexy times.

When he is not reading or writing gay erotic fiction from his front porch swing, he might be painting, playing with his dogs and cats, or cooking experimental meals for (or drinking beer with) Jay, his husband and muse. He loves old cars, science fiction, road trips, and spending time with family and friends.

He came to terms with his sexuality only later in life, so that struggle is a frequent theme in his work. He has since embraced it with pride and considers himself an LGBT* activist, a feminist, and a champion for equal rights.
