Two years of living with his controlling boyfriend left Chico worn down long before that boyfriend revealed he’d been seeing someone else. With no other choice, Chico moves in above his cousin’s garage in a small town in the redwoods, where he merely goes through the motions. To get him out of the house, his cousin pushes him to volunteer at a local dance studio to help with their annual show.

He’s not expecting to end up in a dance class, or to start feeling alive again in the arms of his dance instructor. Rafael is the studio owners’ son and was once a well-known dancer in his own right, but now enjoys being a teacher. Although Chico likes him, he’s afraid of taking a chance. But Rafael is determined, and it only takes one dance for Chico to start to realize he might still have something to learn.

Review

(Book reviewed here previously)

Chico is struggling with depression. His friend suggests he volunteer to get him out of the house and on with his life. He ends up at a dance studio where – at first – he ends up in a class by mistake. There he meets Rafael.

Rafael owns the studio and is immediately drawn to the fragility of Chico. He knows he’s not there for a class, but he sucks him into dancing to draw him out.

The two gradually (very slowly) move towards one another – Chico is a jumpy, at best, where relationships are concerned.

**

I think R Cooper’s writing is a matter of reader preference. Like some people LOVE poetry and others will never see the beauty in it…

I’ve had this book a long time (in my world) and it’s taken forever for me to sit down and finish it because every time I start reading it I put it back down. I kept waiting for “the right mood” to strike – I’d seen all the positive reviews and thought it must be a great book… but I never got into it.

Chico is very well fleshed out – he’s sad, crushed by life’s disappointments and his depression is very well articulated. I didn’t get nearly as strong an impression of Rafael, other than that of savior to Chico. The relationship building felt kind of chaotic and I didn’t really feel that strong a connection.

I found the writing distracting and difficult for me to fall into, but I know others have found it to be lyrical and expressive. So… I think it’s a matter of taste.

Audio

I got this on audio to review because I’m always interested in new narrators.  I also got it because sometimes a good narrator can elevate a so-so book (for me) to higher heights just by the narration being so engaging.  Well… that did NOT happen here.

Brian Schell is a new narrator to me. He is very nasal in his tonality and somewhat flat as far as emotion goes. He also doesn’t pronounce Chico’s name correctly (Sheeco) which is in the story itself, nor does he give anyone any sort of accent at all. At times I felt like I was listening to an instruction manual. There was no “acting” at all. I couldn’t actually listen to the entire story as it was too annoying. I “sampled” it in parts to see if I could find some redeeming qualities but… well I just didn’t like this. I don’t think I’d buy anything by this narrator in the future. If it hadn’t been free, I’d think about returning it because I can’t see myself actually listening to it all the way from start to finish.

Acceptance (Forbes Mates Book 3) by Grace R Duncan

acceptanceBlurb

Dr. Miles Grant acknowledges that his destined mate could be either gender even though his bisexuality cost him his family and his pack. Luckily he found the Forbes Pack, who happily accepts him just as he is. What he never counted on was finding his mate in Pittsburgh or for his mate to be another species entirely—a cat!

Quincy Archer isn’t just any jaguar shifter. He is the heir to the leadership of his pride. Destined mates are nothing but legend to the nearly extinct and generally solitary jaguars, and Quincy certainly never expected to find one for himself, much less a male… or a wolf.

However, finding each other and coming to terms with their species is the least of their worries. Quincy is expected to select a proper female mate, father a cub, and take his place as heir to the pride. Except Quincy refuses, having no interest in women or leadership and knowing he isn’t right for it. But his father will stop at nothing—not even attempting to kill Miles—to get his way. Quincy and Miles must overcome many obstacles to stay together as the destined mates they’re meant to be.

Review

This is book three in a series and it must be read in order for it to be truly appreciated. I think you – might- be able to understand it if you read this as a standalone but you’d lose SO MUCH!

We met Quincy as Miles’ mate in book two. Shockingly, the wolves never knew there were other shifters out there – and Quincy is a jaguar shifter. Jaguars don’t have mates and Miles feared that he’d never be able to claim and live with his reclusive jaguar mate.

Quincy is not only a reclusive jaguar shifter, but the heir to the leadership of his group. He’s estranged from his father, though, and has no desire to take over leadership. He just wants to do his own thing – art and information brokering – and be left alone. In addition, he doesn’t want a mate (first because he’s not sure he believes in fate or destined mates – and second because his father is doing everything he can to bring him into the fold and he fears any “mate” of his would be in danger.)

We meet up with Miles – an ER doctor – and Quincy after Quincy has been badly beaten by some jaguar goons Quincy believes were hired by his father. At last, Quincy can’t deny the pull and he agrees to try to be with Miles, but only after he settles things with his father.

What proceeds is a very dramatic and involved game of cat and mouse (or wolf and cat!) wherein the goons chase after Quincy, then Miles, then Chad and Jamie after they’re roped in to helping.

**

I adore this series! The characters are multi-faceted and real, but still have their “animal” qualities close at hand. Just EXACTLY what a shifter story should have.

It was so great seeing so much of Chad and Jamie after Chad had been converted to his wolf. He was so adorable! I loved seeing how he evolved his control of his senses.

The mystery in this story connects the previous book through the Alpha Prime but has it’s own evolution by including Quincy’s father. The jaguar culture is just as fascinating as learning about the wolf culture we did in book two.

If I have any complaints, it’s the romance between Quincy and Miles. It goes from zero to sixty then stalls out for chapters then ramps up to a climactic finish and it was not nearly as satisfying as the romance from the previous two books. (Which is unfair to compare, but I loved the romance in books one and two, so this was just a bit of a let down.)

In any case, I couldn’t put this story down and I loved, loved LOVED the epilogue! GAH I hope it doesn’t mean the end of the series!!!!!! L

I can’t recommend this series or this book any higher – it’s truly wonderful. Any fans of shifter romances should consider this a MUST READ.

Review

Well – SO MUCH HAPPENS in this book and I don’t want to spoil anything.

So… things that I loved about this story:

Sloane and Dex becomes SO CLOSE: It’s amazing. Just when you think they couldn’t possibly love one another more. Sigh. Ooey gooey love in abundance. It was wonderful!!

Learning more back story: we learn more about Dex’s parents, Tony’s relationship with them.

Super hot smexy times.

Lots of purring.

As you know, Charlie has teased us with her “Change is coming” and WOW is it ever. You’ll understand pretty much what that refers to after the first chapter.

Things that break my heart: Seb and Hudson. They seriously need a HEA. They are in so much pain!

Things that made me laugh: Ash’s response to Dex when he was pouting. J

Things that made me mad: SPARKS. Full stop.

(And Shulzon and sometimes Charlie.. there’s this part near the end… Oh Charlie you can be SO MEAN… luckily it turned out ok – LOL  )

I know any fans of the series will adore this and I think it might be tied with

Rack and Ruin as my favorite in the series. I can’t tell you more. You must read this series in order. It’s amaze-balls!

Desert Heat and Native Tongue Audiobook by Lucy Felthouse narrated by Joel Leslie

Desert Heat: Their love is forbidden by rules, religion, and risk. Yet, still they can’t resist. Captain Hugh Wilkes is on his last tour of duty in Afghanistan. The British Army is withdrawing, and Wilkes expects his posting to be event-free. That is, until he meets his Afghan interpreter, Rustam Balkhi, who awakens desires in Wilkes that he’d almost forgotten about, and that won’t be ignored.

Native Tongue: They may be back on British soil, but the battle isn’t over. When Captain Hugh Wilkes fell for his Afghan interpreter, Rustam Balkhi, he always knew things would never be easy. After months of complete secrecy, their return to England should have spelt an end to the sneaking around and the insane risks. But it seems there are many obstacles for them to overcome before they can truly be happy together. Can they get past those obstacles, or is this one battle too many for their fledgling relationship?

Review

I’m not sure of the timeline, but I’m assuming that given the degree to which these guys hid their feelings, it was a bit earlier in time. That combined with the location and the ethnicity of where they were stationed forced Balkhi and Hugh to hide their burgeoning love for one another for most of the time they’re stationed together. It’s only near the end of their tour that they were able to give in to their feelings and only once they moved back to England were they able to be out in public.

Once in England the trouble between them becomes how to organize their lives so they actually get to spend time together, but they find that their love is enough to overcome any obstacle.

**

Despite it’s length, this was a very slow burn romance. Almost all of book one was taken up with getting these guys to admit their feelings. Surprisingly, they took some amazing risks to be together that I thought were going to back fire – but amazingly – didn’t.

I really liked how deep their feelings for one another grew and how unafraid they were of speaking of them. Especially Balkhi.

I enjoyed watching these guys learning about being together and being “out”.  It was sweet, sexy and fun.

I really enjoyed these books and would look for more from this author in the future. I found the look at the British army as well as the conundrum for the interpreters to be fascinating.

Story 4.5 of 5 stars

Audio

Joel Leslie did a SUPERB job with his narration. He gave Hugh and all the various folks from the UK unique and believable accents as well as Balkhi’s more stilted English. I really enjoyed listening to this and found it made me feel more immersed in the story.

Nico Dombruso has learned to keep the world at arm’s length after being badly burned by his last relationship. Even so, he decides to let himself enjoy a summer fling while on vacation in Italy. It’s just sex after all, so what’s the harm?

He gets so much more than he bargained for when he meets gorgeous, mysterious art dealer Luca Caruso. The connection between them is undeniable, and for the first time in years, Nico starts to consider the possibility of trusting his tattered heart to someone again. But when a secret is revealed that shakes him to his core and threatens to tear his family apart, Nico runs, so far and so fast that no one, not even the man who was making him believe he could love again, might ever be able to reach him.

Review

Nico is taking a much needed break from law school with his crazy Nana and ends up meeting a boy he had met years ago, Luca. Luca is everything Nico could want in a man, but he lives in Italy and Nico’s life is in California. Just when he thinks he could do anything to be with Luca, he finds out Luca is more than he’d been pretending to be.

Nico rushes back to the states to lick his wounds at what he perceives is another betrayal by a lover only to find that Luca’s family has come back to cause trouble for the Dombrusos. Nico blames Luca, but gratefully accepts his help in defusing the situation when Luca flies in to help salvage their relationship.

In the meantime we get lots of Nana antics – including a marriage proposal for her! – and more scenes with some of the other cousins/brothers/hustands.

**

While I thought that Luca and Nico’s relationship was a bit too “easy” – they fell in love so quickly and deeply and Luca was so OTT in his devotion that it got a bit trying sometimes – I loved this for the peeps we got into the other relationships. Seeing the Dombruso clan re-claimed by Dante and Vincent was great and watching them all band together was wonderful.

I also enjoyed the back story on the two family’s feud and how that all gets resolved. I’m hoping we’ll see more from that side of the feud in the future.

Audio:

Greg Tremblay, as always, was a delight to listen to. He did his best to give the Italian accents his best shot and succeeded in giving all the emotion he could pour in to the highly charged romance. I’d listen to Greg reading anything, but it’s wonderful when he’s given this huge cast of characters and he manages to give them all a distinctive voice. Kudos Greg!

Every gentleman has something to hide.

Meeting Heath Blackwood, a gorgeous English farmer, is probably the most exciting thing to ever happen to small-town landscaper Theo Brody, who has lived in quiet Maplehurst, New Hampshire, all his life. The sexy and secretive Brit shakes the foundations of his orderly world as they are swept up in a springtime romance neither can resist.

But Heath’s secrets run deeper than Theo ever imagined. He’s actually Heathcliff Pierrepont Blackwood, Duke of Kingston, in hiding from recent death threats. Suddenly there’s more separating them than the Atlantic Ocean, and Theo doubts he’ll ever fit in with English nobility. Though Heath and Theo are opposites in almost every way, their love might bridge the gap – if they’re willing to take the risk.

Review

(Book reviewed here previously)

Theo is the town’s beloved orphan. He’s a bartender in the winter and a landscaper in the summer. He’s had one bad boyfriend and is focused on making his business work to the exclusion of a love life.

When the grumpy Brit – Heath – walks into his bar, at first Theo thinks he’s a jerk – and he kinda is – but as time moves on – the two fairly quickly find they have more in common than just being the only gay guys in town.

Unfortunately, Heath is hiding something pretty big and when Theo finds out their lives – which are already complicated by living across the ocean from one another – become almost completely incompatible.

**

These Dreamspun Desire books are just plain fun! I love seeing all these old tropes changed to fit a more modern and gay storyline!

In this case – the secret nobility! – we get to watch little orphan Theo get all his dreams answered but really we get to see two really lonely guys find their soulmates.

I think MJ O’Shea is a fantastic writer and she managed to beautifully blend the easy, sweet and predictable trope into a more complex and really well thought-out and well-developed story about real people – not just caricatures.

I really enjoyed this and though the ending was a little less satisfying than I wanted, I appreciated that it left us in a very plausible place that was still very, very happy.

Highly Recommended.

Audio

Rusty Topsfield tries very hard to have a good English accent and for the most part it’s passable. It’s enough that it gives the narration a little extra sense of “being there”. I really like his dialog but find his non-dialog parts sometimes a little “lilty”. In any case I don’t think it detracts from the experience and I was never bothered by any of the above niggling complaints. I think this is a great way to experience this story and highly recommend it.

THIRDS: Book Six

Calvin Summers and Ethan Hobbs have been best friends since childhood, but somewhere along the line, their friendship evolved into something more. With the Therian Youth Center bombing, Calvin realizes just how short life can be and no longer keeps his feelings for his best friend a secret. Unfortunately, change is difficult for Ethan; most days he does well to deal with his selective mutism and social anxiety. Calvin’s confession adds a new struggle for Ethan, one he fears might cost him the friendship that’s been his whole world for as long as he can remember.

As partners and Defense Agents at the THIRDS, being on Destructive Delta is tough at the best of times, but between call-outs and life-threatening situations, Calvin and Ethan not only face traversing the challenges of their job, but also working toward a future as more than friends.

Review

(Book Reviewed Here Previously)

So by now you know the drill. This is book 6 and I’m pretty sure you could figure things out if you read this as a standalone but only barely J

It’s time for us to finally get our story for Calvin and Hobbs. They’ve been best friends forever, partnered up in THIRDS for years and fighting their sexual attraction for just as long. Recently, a bout of jealousy spurred Ethan (Hobbs) into action and we got some hot making out between the two and an uneasy relationship.

In this book we finally – FINALLY – get some resolution and our couple faces their issues and really gets over the hurdles keeping them from being the adorable couple they (and we!) know they can be.

Meanwhile there is also some more drama with the other members of THIRDS: Seb and Hudson especially. Sparks has the team doing a lot of specialized (difficult) training and lives are threatened at a birthday party at Dekatria!

There’s a cliff hanger at the end – I’ll warn ya now! – so be prepared – I’m sure it’ll end up fine… it’s the kind where we know there’ll be trouble but a happy ending – but now we all have to bite our nails til book 7!

**

I LOVED that we got to see the softer side of Ash and Sloane in this – lots of ooey, gooey and PURRING moments with Dex and Cael and their partners. There’s the requisite action and shooting and some more of the back story gets revealed involving the team and their pasts.

The twists and turns that Ethan and Calvin’s relationship takes are a bit surprising and I guess I was a bit … maybe let down? I was expecting a big, emotional and full of hearts and flowers thing and it sorta happened that way – but it was a bit anti-climactic. Maybe because we’d already seen them hook up or maybe because they’d been friends for so long… in any case… It was sweet and tender and sometimes scorching hot! – but a bit different than I’d expected.

I still loved them – don’t get me wrong – there is a lot of heart-string-tugging moments and tears – nobody will be disappointed by how things unfold.

All the fans will be ecstatic to read this and justifiably upset by the cliff hanger as we await for book 7!

4 of 5 stars

Audio

Mark Westfield is now to most of us the voice of THIRDS. He has some special challenges here because so much “speech” occurs in Ethan’s head. He does a great job of sort of “whispering” these lines to give us the indication that he’s not actually speaking. I’m not sure if I’d have gotten it if I hadn’t read it first, but since I knew the deal… well I think you’d get it anyway. He does his nice job with telephones and walkie talkies and other electronics as well. I found that listening to this made me appreciate how sweet Dex and Sloan are together as well as how cute Calvin’s southern accent is and his mom’s too. I love listening to this series and highly recommend it!

My Boss is a Grumpy Werewolf and I Think He Wants to Marry Me! By Jane Wallace-Knight

29959806Blurb

Four months ago, Cole Morgan, human, writer, sufferer of verbal diarrhoea, fell in love with his boss Evan West. Two months ago, he was kidnapped and held hostage by Evan’s dad. Now he is doing just fine, or he would be if everybody wasn’t constantly waiting for him to break down over it. Evan, on the other hand, is not fine. The werewolf, having decided that Cole is his mate, is having trouble keeping his protective instincts in check, and the violent nightmares he endured are creeping into his waking life.

With issues and dangerous revelations coming at them from both sides of their families, not to mention Cole’s penchant for finding trouble and uncovering secrets, the couple find themselves tested at every turn. Cole’s pretty sure they can handle it though. After all, nothing can be worse than declaring their relationship to the scary HR lady.

Review

Now Evan and Cole are a couple, but things are far from settled. They have to come “out” as a couple and this is not without pitfalls.

Evan is still dealing with his own PTSD after the event with his step-father and Cole’s seeming ease with it.

There is some drama with Cole’s brother and another kidnapping.

All in all it was great fun seeing these guys together again and watching as their relationship matured and deepened.

Cole is just as funny and Evan is just as possessive as in book one, but now there a bit more feels added in to the smexy times.

Highly recommended, but it must be read in order.

For paramedic Adam Carson, his world is lights and sirens and saving lives. Pressures at work keep him firmly in the closet, and life is too busy to contend with the complications that come with dating and relationships. When a familiar face from his past turns up where he least expects it, Adam starts to question whether or not there is room in his life for those complications.

The last person forensic pathologist Sam McKenna expects to see at pub night is Adam, the guy who made his life hell in high school. The attraction is instant, but Adam isn’t gay and Sam has no interest in pursuing him. Still, the leftover animosity from their teenage years isn’t enough to extinguish the lust growing between them. After both are called to the scene of a horrific murder, Adam admits he’s not as straight as he led Sam to believe and they seek comfort and distraction in each other’s arms. One night becomes many as the murder investigation intensifies, but when Adam is faced with losing Sam, he is forced to make a choice: to break his silence, or to give up everything for the job he loves.

Review

Adam and Sam went to high school together and shared a friend, Mason. There was some underlying issues between the three of them (that get explained later) that made Adam tease Sam mercilessly and call him by his real name, Dex – only as an insult. Dex really liked Adam in a way he’d never admit, so the teasing hurt even more than it should.

When they meet as adults, Adam has at least acknowledged he’s gay, but he’s not out. Adam also acknowledges his attraction to Dex and Dex reciprocates. The two beging “dating” but on the DL. Dex is ok being in the closet with Adam, so long as Adam keeps coming home to him.

Most of the story is NOT about them and their relationship – although it plays a central theme, the bulk of this is the mystery/crime the two are solving and the other issues in their daily lives. Including the decision to come out or not.

When one of them almost dies, the two realize that they can’t live apart like that and Adam is forced to make tough decisions.

**

This is a beginning to a series – YAY! (Though I haven’t heard of a book two…) The two MCs have some seriously hot chemistry and there are a few other gay boys involved who need their stories told too! (Caleb and Ford)

The mystery in this goes unsolved in this book (sorry to spoil that for you – but I think that’s the thread for the series.) and I actually got involved in that part of the book. Usually I skim the mystery stuff to get to the romance – Kudos Cate Ashwood!

This is definitely one of those stories that grabs you right from the start and won’t let you put it down til it’s over. I loved seeing Adam open up and embrace this other side of himself and Dex was a sweetheart who definitely deserved love.

I thoroughly liked this and can’t wait for the next book!

Audio

Scott R Smith is a new to me narrator. He reads well, and understands how to put in emotional pauses and is fairly good with the pacing. Unfortunately he has a tendency to make every sentence sound the same with an upward lilt that makes it sound like everything is super dramatic. It just sounded a bit “newbie” and not as great as some of the other narrators who do more “acting” and less reading.

I was able to enjoy the entire story, however, so he didn’t bother me enough to stop listening. It just wasn’t as awesome as it could have been.

Jefferson Lee Davis is happy with his life in the city until his favorite uncle has a bad fall and he rushes to Holly Creek to make sure Uncle Sherman is okay. Jefferson Lee knows how to navigate small Southern town’s politics and the residents greet him with open arms. Everyone but the town’s sheriff, Zane Yarbrough, that is.

Dogwood Days, the town’s biggest festival is looming, so Jefferson has to step up and take over his uncle’s job as the town blogger, even if that puts him right in the sheriff’s path. Quirky neighbors, meddling family, and a sassy best friend all come together to make Jefferson Lee’s life in Holly Creek a full-time adventure. When he loses his job back in the city, Jefferson Lee has to start a new job search that will take him away from the town he’s learning to think of as home. Will this big city boy find sweet romance in the arms of a small town sheriff or will the allure of the city call him back?

(Spring Fever)

Jefferson Lee Davis, Holly Creek’s new Director of Publicity, is gearing up for the next big town event, the summer Rose Festival. The job is running smoothly, but the course of true love has hit a rocky patch. His hunky boyfriend, Sheriff Zane Yarbrough, is receiving mysterious phone calls he doesn’t want to discuss. While Jefferson Lee is blindsided by jealousy, the second shoe drops with the appearance of a handsome stranger in the small tight-knit community. Needing answers, Jefferson Lee enlists his best gal-pal Clover Crofton to help find out what secrets Zane is hiding. When they land themselves in more trouble than Jefferson Lee bargained for, he and Zane face the first big test of their relationship. Zane and Jefferson Lee must work through their trust issues if they’re going to make it as a couple, and Clover may just have a thing or two to learn herself.

Reviews

(Dogwood Days)

When Jefferson Lee comes back to his small town to help his Uncle Sherman with his blog he doesn’t realize his life will change in a big way! First, he seems to find trouble at every turn – including catching the eye of the sherriff, Zane.

Next, his blogging is a hit, but his ideas for the town stir up old resentments.

When Zane keeps showing up to check up on Sherman, he ends up spending time with Jefferson Lee. It seems everyone but Jefferson realizes Zane has an interest in the nephew not the uncle.

(Spring Fever – reviewed here previously)

This is the sequel to Dogwood Days and pretty much takes off where book one left off.

Jefferson Lee Davis is still dating the hot sheriff Zane and things are beginning to look serious between the two of them.

There is some drama surrounding the town’s annual festival that Jefferson manages to create into a big hub-bub, and a mysterious “friend” of Zane’s comes into town stirring all kinds of jealousy in Jefferson Lee.

The two fight a bit – Zane asks Jefferson Lee to move in but Jefferson’s not ready and Jefferson realizes he doesn’t trust Zane or vice versa when it comes to the mysterious stranger. But… the two manage to figure things out and we get a lot of ooey gooey sweet and sexy lovin’ between the two as their saga continues.

**

These are light, fun and quirky romances that focus on a small town with a dash of romance between Jefferson Lee and Zane. It’s funny, sweet and literally angst-free!

Jefferson Lee is just a clueless sweetheart who needs a swift kick before he realizes what’s right in front of him, even when it’s practically gift-wrapped!

I highly recommend this to fans of “light and fluffy” romances, fans of the small town, fans of “clueless MCs” and anyone looking for a breath of fresh air!

Though we get the idea that Zane and Jefferson Lee are an “item” it’s still more of a HFN – but still quite Happy!

Audio

Matt Armstrong is a new narrator to me, and he’s fantastic! He does a really great job with the southern accents and all the female characters. If you’ve enjoyed the books you’ll love this audiobook!
