Recent Release: Devil’s Hour (Zero Hour #2) by Aimee Nicole Walker

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49198964-devil-s-hour

Blurb

Devil’s hour, noun: the hour when the demon or devil who leads hell is at its strongest.

Born on the wrong side of the tracks, Royce Locke is no stranger to scrapping and fighting for the things he wants. What he desires most is Sawyer Key—his partner on the force and the man he’s falling in love with. After asking Sawyer to take a chance on him, Royce will need to back up his pretty words with fearless action instead of being his own worst enemy.

Someone is harassing the mayor of Savannah, and Locke and Key are tasked with finding out who. The investigation quickly takes a twisted turn, leading them to an enemy who thinks purification by fire is the only way to save the city. Scarier than The Purists’ elusiveness is their ability to turn public opinion in their favor, creating unrest and threatening anarchy by fanning flames and fear. When you play with fire, someone is bound to get burned.

When menace becomes murder, the two detectives will race the clock against the devil to save their beloved city from becoming a raging inferno. Royce will need to draw on his grit now more than ever if he hopes to realize the dreams that are finally within reach. The rag is lit, the Molotov cocktail is tossed, and the zero hour is upon them. Challenge received and accepted.

Devil’s Hour is the second book in the Zero Hour series, which follows Locke and Key’s investigations and evolving relationship. This is a series that must be read in order. Devil’s Hour has a happy-for-now ending with no cliffhanger. It contains mature language and sexual content intended for adults 18 and older.

Trigger warning: Part of the storyline involves coming to terms with a friend’s suicide, which may be difficult for some people to read.

Review
I absolutely loved Devil’s Hour!!!! We finally get inside Royce’s head. I couldn’t really get a handle on his character throughout the first book. He is full of guilt over his friend’s suicide, he has a very rocky relationship with his family and is full of internal struggle and doubts.
The relationship development between Royce and Sawyer really hits the peak in this book. Royce jumps right into being out and open with Sawyer.
This book is full of funny and heartfelt moments. Its fast paced and has a good mystery weaved throughout it.

The long-lost magic brings doom…

We’ve been living in the shadow of the enchanter prophecy since my magic was released, and it seems that the darkness is finally closing in. There’s chaos everywhere; Brinnswick has become a war zone. The human and magical communities are doing everything in their power to save us, but it isn’t enough. Our enemies are countless and more powerful than anything we’ve ever seen.

The country has been in turmoil since the berserkers awakened an evil power, and somehow, my magic is connected to it. Ailin doesn’t know yet that the last time this magic was released in our realm, my ancestors sacrificed one of their own in order to keep the evil at bay. I have no doubt that he would burn the world around us in order to save me, but what if my sacrifice could save the world? I don’t want to leave him—he’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me—but if my death can guarantee his life, and the lives of our coven, then I’ll do whatever it takes to keep them safe.

The Enchanter’s Heart is the fourth and final book in The Ellwood Chronicles and is a continuation of Sebastian and Ailin’s story. It contains explicit material and is intended for mature adults 18 years of age and older.

Review

This was a lovely end to this series and a great lead up to the spin off.

There is a lot of angst and a fair amount of feelz in this and readers of the series won’t be disappointed.

I absolutely loved the magic and the new powers that get explored and I can’t wait to read the spinoff!!!!

Recent Release: Ground Zero (Zero Hour #1) by Aimee Nicole Walker

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/48217288-ground-zero

Blurb
Ground zero, noun: the center or origin of rapid, intense, or violent activity or change.

Heat, humidity, and homicide are things veteran detective Sawyer Key expects to encounter on his first day with the Savannah Police Department, but the hostile reception from his new partner catches him by surprise. Sawyer isn’t a stranger to heartache and recognizes that Royce Locke is a wounded man who’s reeling from a devastating loss. Relentless and patient in all things, Sawyer is determined to make the new partnership work.

Savannah, Georgia is known for her quirky people, oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and antebellum architecture. Beneath the Southern charm and hospitality, festering hatred and violence is soaring with the summer temperatures. Locke and Key find themselves at the epicenter when their first case involves the death of a former shock jock who appears to be the victim of vigilante justice.

Opposites in nearly every way, the two detectives set aside their differences to take back their city and restore law and order. From this reluctant truce, an intense attraction grows that will either tighten or shatter their tenuous bond. Falling for his partner spells inevitable disaster, but Sawyer’s always been a sucker for wounded things. Sawyer could be the key to the life Royce has always wanted, if he’s brave enough to trust him. The fuse is lit, the clock is running, and the zero hour is upon them. Tick tock.

Ground Zero is the first book in the Zero Hour series, which follows Locke and Key’s investigations and evolving relationship. Ground Zero has a happy-for-now ending with no cliffhanger. It contains mature language and sexual content intended for adults 18 and older.

Review
What an amazing read!!! I adored everything about this book. It’s a bit more somber than what I’m used to from Aimee’s books, although there are some humorous moments. Both of the main characters are dealing with loss…Sawyer(Key) is dealing with the death of his husband and Locke(Royce) is dealing with the death of his partner. Locke is confusing at times, his past and issues remain a mystery for most of this book, although there is some light shed towards the end. I enjoyed the investigations that went on during the story. I was a little disappointed with the end of the big conflict though. This is a great slow burn story. Highly recommend this one!

I just tried and tried but could not get into this book. I never read the first book and I just couldn’t find it in me to get into this one. Not the author’s fault, but just not what I am interested in right now.

Can he learn how to become a different person, a better man, and make amends to those he owes before his checkered past catches up with him?

Reader Advisory: This story is best read after finishing The Crystal Connoisseur.

Review

This was pretty good. Not a lot of waffling by Sheridan and some pretty straight forward – human meets paranormal falling in love story.

I don’t think you had to have read the Crystall Connoisseur but it helps.

Aiden
Finding out the man I slept with is my friend’s father is terrifying, but maybe forgivable since I didn’t know who he was… right? But falling into bed with him again… and again and again is probably not excusable. Maybe if Delaney got rid of his miles of muscles and stopped being so sweet to me, I could stop. I need to stop. If only I had the willpower—or the desire. Delaney is everything I want in a man, but we have no future together, so it can never be more than this. His sons can never find out.
Delaney
Serving time for a crime I didn’t commit wasn’t in my game plan, but I’m out now and determined to live my best possible life. After hooking up with a hot younger man, I regret letting him go without even his name. But then luck is finally with me, and he comes walking into my son’s house. In order to make him mine, I have to be honest with my sons about the past as well as my desire for Aiden. But Aiden’s fear of getting involved is deeper than he’s telling me. He’s hiding something, too.
Will Aiden’s fear of revealing his private life and losing his friends keep him from the man who wants to be his everything or will he allow Delaney to help bear his burden?
Liberating Love is the third book in the Interlocking Fragments series, but is a standalone novel. Each book in the series will feature a different couple, but the couples will show up throughout the whole series. This is a contemporary romance intended for 18+.

Review

This was a good addition to the series.

Fairly angsty and not my exact taste (I don’t care for these big age gaps as much as some others.) So I wasn’t as invested in this story as I was the first 2 but I will definitely be looking forward to book 4!

If your super power meant you could turn into a kitsune, a powerful fox spirit, you wouldn’t fear for the life of your mate, right?

Sebastian survived an entire year on the run from the supernatural. Then he met Liam, his fated mate and alpha werewolf, and thought maybe he’d found a home. Until the fae come calling. They want control of Seb’s power, even if that means eliminating Liam to get it.

When a trick leaves Seb in trouble with the werewolves, the military, and the fae, he fears his only option is to run. Except Seb is done running. He will stop at nothing to keep Liam by his side, even if it means letting his beast loose on them all.

Review

This was just a bit “much” for me. It is very involved and complex – lots of world shifting and moving back and forth from other worlds.

I did not like it as much as book one. I loved the emotional connections that finally get forged, but the action/adventure is the vast majority of this book and that is not my “thing”.

If you loved the world building of book one and want to see more running, fighting, worrying, etc – this is for you. I did love Seb’s new powers but… I found myself forcing it to get through this.

Blurb:
Brian King was honorably discharged from the United States Navy five years ago. He’d left with the highest honors a man can receive in his country, but he’d paid the ultimate price to earn them. He’d returned home with all his limbs, his right mind, and with his only brother Ford, at his side. But, one thing had been lost, maybe for good…his voice.

Now, being a bounty hunter is Brian’s only means to satisfy his need to calculate, track, and capture. He missed companionship, he missed communicating. So, when he met Sway Hamilton – in the most unconventional means – he’d been surprised at his special way of understanding Brian’s every look…and touch.

Sway grew up in the rough part of ATL, trailing behind his twin brother Stanton and his best friend, Dana. He and his brother had a bond only twins could understand. So when Stanton’s life was taken during their sophomore year in college, Sway didn’t think he’d ever recover. However, Sway knew there was more to life than heartache.

Sway has to learn to trust in love, and Brian has to believe that Sway will always understand him even if he never speaks again.

Review:
Story: I loved Brian and Sway’s story. Brian, mute after a traumatic time in the Middle East, is looking for his HEA. Just when he thought he’d met the person who has the potential to see past his disability and care for him, that person disappears.
But luck is on his side, he meets that man again and doesn’t plan on letting him go!
Ms. Via’s stories pack quite a bit of emotion – men pining for each other, men going all alpha protective or men falling in love – all done with their whole heart, holds barred. Brian and Sway’s path to their HEA was not all smooth sailing, but it was a lot of fun listening to them get there. Bonus points for the past charades making an appearance 

Narration: Aiden Snow was made to narrate this series! His gorgeous voice is so well suited for the growly, alpha men that dominate the story. He has been great for the series 
As observed in the others in the series, there is not that much voice distinction between most of the men, but the story is well written enough that you always know which character is talking.

Story: 4.5 stars
Narration: 4 stars

What he hadn’t expected was the man who sat down next to him; devilishly handsome and claiming to be the richest man in Silverdale City, Alric Drayton. And that was only the beginning of the man’s ludicrous claims that Eden was only too happy to dismiss, at first.

Two-thousand years of living might have taught Alric patience, but his was slowly wearing thin and now that he’d found his Eden Alric had no intention of letting him go.
Except there’s more to Alric’s world than what is written in fairy tales.
Non-omegaverse Mpreg Paranormal Romance. Approx 30k length

Review

This was very interesting. I figure this is mostly about world building so I’m eager to read more in the series. I thought it was a good take on the fated mate idea – with Alric having to watch his mate grow up.

I didn’t always love how Alric and Eden behaved. Alric – especially – was kind of a manipulative bastard – but in the end he was also sweet.

For fans of the sub genre this is recommended.

Recent Release: Home is Where the Heart Is (Cloverleah Pack #13) by Lisa Oliver

Home is Where the Heart Is… The final book in the Cloverleah Pack series.

All Cloverleah Pack Enforcer Wesley (Wes) wanted the night he went out, was to have a few drinks, maybe find some company, and try and forget his worries and insecurities for few hours. The drinks flowed and he found the company; a gorgeous man with a mysterious scent, who seemed to completely understand the anger, shame, and jealousy Wes was hiding from his pack mates. Unfortunately, Wesley didn’t understand how badly he’d been conned until he woke up the next morning alone in a cave.

Fast forward months later and Wes discovered the wards that had have held him captive from day one had suddenly disappeared. Not one to dither when a chance to escape presented itself, Wesley set off, sometimes on two feet and sometimes on four… looking for a way out of a barren realm that held nothing but red sand and black rocks.

Cass enjoyed being a demon from a large family. The Underworld was good to him; he had a job, a house and he didn’t lack for company. Unfortunately, his carefree attitude tended to get him into trouble at times and when his brother Myka insisted on him paying back a “favor” he’d incurred through a badly placed bet, Cass had no choice but to agree. It sounded simple enough. Meet with the snobby and reclusive members of the Cloverleah Pack, find out about a missing wolf, and then search for that wolf in the Underworld. Cass figured he could be home in time for his mama’s Sunday dinner.

Finding Wes wasn’t the problem, but Wesley had stumbled onto a situation of his own he couldn’t leave. What was worse, was when Cass was forced to tell Wesley about why no one from his pack had been looking for him before, Wes knew he had no way of ever going back to the life he had. The fact that Cass and Wesley were fated mates was hard to celebrate as Wes tried to cope with the loss of his pack status and the implications of his current situation.

Meanwhile, the men from Cloverleah were coming to terms with some home truths of their own. The thought of having to see Wesley again, and actually apologize for thinking he’d sunk so low as to try and destroy a mating, was too hard for some pack members to face. This in turn causes issues between those who struggled and those who believed in the bonds of a pack. Serious soul searching was needed if the men were ever going to understand that the only powers worth trusting was unconditional love and acceptance.

This book is not a standalone. It is the fifteenth and final book in the series (Thirteen full novels and two compilations of short stories). It is recommended that you have read at least the last three books before reading this one.

Review

So… this is not a standalone – and how! This is a giant summary of most of the stories, however, I do think a person who stumbled upon this would be mostly fine if they hadn’t read the others (or all the others).

I have to admit that I didn’t care for this much. 

Sorry.

But, the back and forth – he betrayed me – no he didn’t – he doesn’t act like a mate should – show me how – he doesn’t love me – yes he does – got tiring.

I never felt their connection as strongly as some of the other couples and maybe it was because this story was doing way too much for one book.

I think it would have been better had they had their story and then the author publish an epilogue where we can see a summary of the rest of the group at another time.

I was also pretty frustrated by the Cloverleah pack. After all they’d been through and the millions of times they’ve learned this lesson, they still acted like jerks – and I’m not sure I thought that was really fair. I think that Kane especially would have learned from the 5000 times he’s fallen into this trap that maybe he should listen to his mate for once.

So that was pretty frustrating.

While I thought the kids were cute, they were there just enough to be annoying and not long enough for me to find them endearing.

So, as a final “hurrah!”, this was more, a “hmm, welp that’s over”. I LOVED this series and while I didn’t always love each couple, I enjoyed their stories and was glad to have read them. I’m enjoying their turn into audio books and I definitely recommend both the books and the audios to fans of the sub-genre.

I’m definitely going to miss these guys and will visit with them again.

(I do hope we can see a new set of covers on these one day…)
