Series: The Walker Boys, Book 3

All hands on deck for a shipboard romance – with a secret.

Like his cousins, Devin Walker aspires to be a chef, but he wants to indulge his wanderlust while feeding his customers, and working a cruise ship seems like the solution. Since he can’t find an opening in the kitchen, he’s happy to start out in a position behind the bar.

While on board Poseidon’s Pearl, Devin is assigned to shepherd a visiting executive. Paul Bailey is quiet and unassuming, and the car accident that cost him his leg also shattered his confidence. He doesn’t think he’s attractive to other men anymore, and Devin is eager to show him just how wrong he is. Paul has a surprising secret that might sink their passionate affair before it even leaves port.

Review

I very much enjoyed the main characters of this story. Devin came across as an outgoing, joyful young man with a bright and intelligent personality. Paul, on the other hand was closed and reserved but with good reason. Both men are dealing with baggage from past relationships. Vacation romances tend to be a bit unrealistic to me, but Ari McKay threw in a couple of wrenches to make our guys work for their happy endings. There is a little drama due to a misunderstanding and lack of communication, but it is resolved fairly quickly and without much angst. The ending was a bit rushed, but I’m used to seeing that with Dreamspun Desire stories.

John Solo did a good job with the narration of this story. He doesn’t have quite the range of “voices” as other narrators, but he reads with such intensity that I can help but like him.

Overall, this is a solid story with a good narration, that I recommend to anyone looking to a fun, light story.

Audiobook: The Doctor’s Secret (Copper Point Medical #1) by Heidi Cullinan Narrated by Iggy Toma

The Doctor’s Secret (Audiobook) by Heidi Cullinan | https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/the-doctors-secret-by-heidi-cullinan-10296-bAudible.comhttps://www.audible.com › Fiction › Gay & Lesbian

Blurb

The brilliant but brooding new doctor encounters Copper Point’s sunny nurse-next-door… and nothing can stand in the way of this romance.

Dr. Hong-Wei Wu has come to Copper Point, Wisconsin, after the pressures of a high-powered residency burned him out of his career before he started. Ashamed of letting his family down after all they’ve done for him, he plans to live a quiet life as a simple surgeon in this tiny northern town. His plans, however, don’t include his outgoing, kind, and attractive surgical nurse, Simon Lane.

Simon wasn’t ready for the new surgeon to be a handsome charmer who keeps asking him for help getting settled and who woos him with amazing Taiwanese dishes. There’s no question—Dr. Wu is flirting with him, and Simon is flirting back. The problem is, St. Ann’s has a strict no-dating policy between staff, which means their romance is off the table… unless they bend the rules.

But a romance that keeps them—literally—in the closet can’t lead to happy ever after. Simon doesn’t want to stay a secret, and Hong-Wei doesn’t want to keep himself removed from life, not anymore. To secure their happiness, they’ll have to change the administration’s mind. But what other secrets will they uncover along the way, about Copper Point… and about each other?

Review

This story reminded me how much I loved Heidi Cullinan stories so I had to go back and listen to Carry the Ocean. Gah. I love that so much!

This is more along the lines of her Love Lessons series. It’s very light and though it could have some dark moments, the author mostly skims over those. Hong-Wei’s family is actually amazing and rather than doing what you might imagine – they do something a bit different.

The hospital administration is probably the worst villain in this and they seemed to act as they should once faced with the opposition.

I applaud the science and medicine in this. Either Heidi is in the field or knows someone – because if felt very authentic.

I didn’t give this 5 stars because I wanted more tension and resolution between our MCs. It was just a bit too easy and I wasn’t as involved in their romance as I was the whole thing going on with Hong-Wei and his family and career.

In the end, I can’t wait for books 2 and 3 to come out because I already love those characters!

Audio

Iggy Toma does his typical stellar job.  He’s engaging and easy to listen to and does a nice job with the various characters.  He doesn’t do much as far as accents to but I didn’t miss them.

Blurb

Nick Smith is a man with a mission: find the place where he’d been held captive as a child and discover what happened to the kids he left behind. His memories are in flux, returned to him after being blocked for the past fourteen years, along with his ability to shift into his lion form. Nick is ready for answers. Instead, he finds a huge Viking of a man with flaming eyes and more power than Nick knew existed.

As a hellhound, Jedrek is often sent on missions that lead to nothing. It’s part of the gig. He’s a champion of the fire goddess, tasked with keeping the secret of the supernatural world safe. When he gets called to a house of horrors he’d not visited in years, the last thing Jedrek expects to find is an out of control alpha lion who brings to life feelings he’s never felt before.

The mysteries of Nick’s past collide with a powerful, evil force causing havoc in the supernatural world. Nick is convinced he can determine who is behind the current rash of dark magic–especially if he has the strength of a hellhound at his side. And if that hellhound is one he can’t keep his mind or hands off? Well, that suits the lion instincts roaring back to life just fine.

Review

This was a bit more disjointed for me in comparison with books 1 and 2.  I really felt the gap this time around since I’d not read the original series for which this is a spinoff where the first 2 books I didn’t.

I didn’t feel like our MCs got as much attention to their relationship as I would have liked and so I wasn’t as invested.

I still really like the world building and the magic and the HEAs but this just didn’t grab me as much as the others.

Recent Release: Adam Only (Those Other Books #2) by Roe Horvat

Good Reads

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/45297701-adam-only?from_search=true

Blurb

On stage, Adam lets his passion drive him. All his secret desires, everything nasty, dirty, and beautiful flows freely through him, for once in harmony. His soul thrives when his body moves, but only on stage. Adam’s passionate nature makes him a great dancer…and a failure at life. He’s a lonely, emotional mess. Going home with a man far out of his reach is the last thing Adam should do. Christoffer represents everything Adam isn’t: strong, independent, educated, and rich. His kind eyes, at odds with his brutish form, make Adam’s knees and restraint buckle.

Once Christoffer sees Adam dancing, he’s lost. The young man is mesmerizing, otherworldly, and unpredictable. Whatever might happen between them, it will be transient, and Christoffer will most likely get hurt. The temptation is too great, however, and the sex explosive. He might as well enjoy every moment he’s given, even if it’s just one day, maybe two. If Christoffer treads carefully, Adam might stay until Monday.

Warning: Adam Only is a gay erotic love story. It contains explicit language and sexual scenes between two consenting men. For adult readers only.

Review

I rather liked Christoffer and Adam in The Other Book, but I love them now. There’s such a powerful, emotional bond between these two men. It was just incredible to read.
This is an erotic novella, a short and steamy read, yet the author still managed to give us an amazing couple with a love that feels epic.
I was completely enchanted by the lyrical writing, so expressive and romantic, and utterly convinced by the great love that so suddenly sprang up between Christoffer and Adam.

I really enjoyed this story.

Review by Neta

This story, despite it being mostly erotic, has a certain draw to it you can’t ignore. Christoffer and Adam fall into passion almost at first sight, they share an emotional connection on a deeper level but they only know each other for days. On its own I would say the story shouldn’t hold and yet, something about the explosion of passion between them and really grabs you.
If you are looking for an extremely erotic story with lots of sex this is also they book for you, the chemistry between them is lava hot and the sexual compatibility they share is magic. Having read the first book in the series (The Other Book) I already know they will last and how much they love each other, and I think that too helped me ‘get into’ the romance and really believe it will work, even though the emotional side hasn’t had much time to form between them yet.
I think this story is mostly about the possibility of love, and not letting it get away, and that hope is really powerful to read.

Review

I loved this so much! So. Much!

I loved the bit of paranormal. I loved the play on their names. I loved seeing Ace and Sonny again… I loved it!

I wished we’d seen them together more – there was an awful lot of time where these guys are apart but – the time together – wowza – hot and such great chemistry.

I can’t wait for this to come out in audio – and I really hope it’s Nick Russo!

Full review to come… love ace and sonny. Of course Burt and Ernie are awesome too ❤️❤️❤️

I loved this! I loved the paranormal aspect. Loved the Sonny and Ace (they are tied as my fav Amy couple with Patrick and Whiskey) I thought the amount of other “story” was a bit overwhelming to the romance but the relationship building amongst previous mcs was awesome.

I love seeing that place in the desert and hope Jai one day gets his own story – with maybe some Alba tossed in on the side.

I wished we’d seen them together more – there was an awful lot of time where these guys are apart but – the time together – wowza – hot and such great chemistry.

I definitely love these guys more than Ellery and Jackson and I hope Nick Russo does this narration!

Audio

YAYAYAYAYAYAY!  I am so glad Nick narrated this!  It was absolutely stunning!  I love listening to Nick and his ability to give depth to these guys is outstanding.  I’ve already listened to this twice and will again soon.  If you’re a fan of this series and this author do yourself a favor and listen to the audio!

Highly Recommended!

Seth Arnold learned at an early age that two things in life could make his soul soar—his violin and Kelly Cruz. In Seth’s uncertain childhood, the kindness of the Cruz family, especially Kelly and his brother, Matty, gave Seth the stability to make his violin sing with the purest sound and opened a world of possibility beyond his home in Sacramento.

Kelly Cruz has loved Seth forever, but he knows Seth’s talents shouldn’t be hidden, not when the world is waiting. Encouraging Seth to follow his music might break Kelly’s heart, but he is determined to see the violin set Seth’s soul free. When their world is devastated by a violent sexual assault and Matty’s prejudices turn him from a brother to an enemy, Seth and Kelly’s future becomes uncertain.

Seth can’t come home and Kelly can’t leave, but they are held together by a love that they clutch with both hands.

Seth and Kelly are young and the world is wide—the only thing they know for certain is they’ll follow their heartstrings to each other’s arms whenever time and fate allow. And pray that one day they can follow that string to forever… before it slices their hearts in two.

Review

From the moment I started this book I knew it’s going to be an Amy Lane classic. Full of feels and emotional highs and lows. I felt like I was privileged to be an onlooker on Seth and Kelly’s life. The turbulence that the Cruz family goes through broke my heart. The story pulledon my heart strings. Growing up along sideSeth, Kelly and Mattie being with them as they struggled through life and learned what loving that special person is all about. In this story we get the whole journey of friends to lovers, the hate and family rife as well as unconditional love. Seth has a unique talent for the violin and Kelly wants that to grow. There are a lot of times when school and other circumstances mean Seth and Kelly can’t be together but friends and family are there to get them through and hold on tight. I cried and cheered within moments of each other many times when reading this book and probably will again when I reread it. If you like angsty stories that also fill your heart with joy I can’t recommend this book high enough. If you are still unsure about this book I would suggest that if you are a fan of Amy Lane’s Bonfires and Crocus books then this one would suit you as well.

Review

This was – has for me to review. I love Amy so much but this did not inspire me.

I was prepared for angst central and there was a bit – but I honestly was never attached to the characters in such a way that I felt it.

Perhaps it was just my frame of mind when I was reading it, but I just didn’t see these guys in the same light as some of her other couples.

First, they spend a ton of time away from one another but still visit so it was kinda – meh – on that front.

The family is both hard to love and so full of pain that I didn’t really get roped in to their drama.

The romance ends on a very bland note and I didn’t get the sense of relief that I usually do with her angsty stories.

It was good and interesting but not my favorite.

Reconnecting with Tyler helps Max settle back in, and it also leads to attraction. But when he tries to explore that connection at the grand opening of his tattoo studio—by kissing Tyler—awkwardness ensues. Max wants more, but has he misread Tyler’s signals?

As a single father raising a six-year-old daughter, Tyler doesn’t have much time to date. He’s ignored his attraction to men for years, but he can’t stop thinking about the kiss he shared with Max. If he can handle the complications of dating in a small town and the possible consequences to his career, this romance could blossom with all the colors of summer.

Review: This is one of those stories that will be reread for a ‘feel good’ pick me feeling ☺
Max returns to his hometown to be closer to his mum. On his way in, the first person he meets is his old crush-turned-deputy, Tyler. As they get reacquainted, Max’s crush rekindles, helped along by Tyler’s interest.
I really enjoyed many things about the story, especially the unhurried way the two men got together, how sweet the supporting cast were, especially Juniper and her uncles. There was even a bit of suspense, which became a catalyst for both men to define their relationship. The story is really angst-free, but there is a depth that left me with a satisfied feeling ☺

Protector Dragon is a m/m paranormal dragon shifter/human romance with a HEA and no cliffhangers

Review

While I really like this world Liv Rider has given us, I wasn’t crazy about the story between Joel and Thomas.  Things move a bit too fast and I wasn’t always invested in their story because I didn’t get enough time to bond with them before it’s all over.

It’s a quick read and if you like the author or dragon shifters it’s worth a read.

Can a loyal and sensual owl shifter couple woo a human mate who’s convinced he’s an ugly duckling?

When socially awkward Dexter Fortis rescues an elf owl blown off course by a storm, he has no idea the bird is a shifter named Orion. Or that his life is about to change.

Orion falls in love with the kind custodian, but he must convince his long-term partner, Talon, that Dexter is just who they’ve been searching for to establish a permanent ménage. Even if they can gently break down Dexter’s walls, they’ll have to contend with a dangerous cult rising in the shifter community and a hidden enemy determined to keep Dexter from them.

Review
Loved this one! So much!

It felt a bit strange to have a story about owl shifters, rather than the more typical bad-ass wolf or big cat shifter, but the author really made it work. I loved how the owls’ characteristics were also present in the MC’s, both in their personalities and mannerisms. Very intriguing and different.

Orion and Talon are an amazing, devoted couple and bringing Dexter into the mix never threatened their feelings for each other, which was lovely. Dexter is very insecure and definitely in need of some love and acceptance. Seeing him blossom and find his place with Orion and Talon was wonderful. I loved every scene between these characters.

Throughout the entire book there’s also a building sense of unease and even danger, with threats coming our heroes’ way on multiple fronts. I really enjoyed the resulting, more action-filled scenes and how they played out.
The world-building was really well done and touches on very current issues, hiding behind the paranormal setting of this story.

This book is part of a series, but can be read perfectly as a standalone.

Definitely recommend!

Review

I really enjoyed this!  The original couple is one of the first times I can remember in a long time that actually seemed to be doing ok on their own but so clearly benefited from a third that it really felt like a unique “falling in love” for all the parties involved.

In a lot of triad stories I feel like one party is just added in for more “fun” or the original couple is doing terribly and the third is required to “fix” them.  But in this case Talon and Orion were perfectly fine but absolutely benefited from Dexter’s additions to their couple.

The owl characteristics were wonderful and I loved Orion as a character!  I thought the drama was a bit predictable and not nearly as enjoyable as the love story but it didn’t detract much attention overall.

This was fun, a bit sexy and highly recommended to fans of shifter romance.

Recent Release: Stable Hill by Jodi Payne

https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/stable-hill-by-jodi-payne-10474-b

Blurb
Will three men from very different backgrounds find a home and a future together?

After losing his husband to cancer, Oscar Kennedy has his hands full with their four girls, the house, his job, and his mother-in-law. When he loses his father too, keeping Stable Hill, the old horse farm where he grew up, becomes impossible. Oscar hires Jeffrey Stokes, a slick-looking real estate broker with a roll-up-his-sleeves work ethic, to get it on the market.

Russell White manages the day-to-day at Stable Hill. Russ had loved Oscar’s dad like a father, and took on even more responsibility when the old man fell ill. He is shocked and saddened by Oscar’s decision to sell.

All three men have a stake in Stable Hill, and it’s not long before they start to invest in one another too. But their complicated relationship doesn’t make having to sell Stable Hill any easier. Will the fragile triad they’re building last when the farm that brought them together is gone?

Review
I liked the set-up of this story and really wanted to fall in love with it, but I didn’t really get there.

I had a hard time believing in the strength of the relationship between the three men, mostly because of Oscar. He is at times quite self-absorbed and not as aware or as careful of Russ’s and Jeffrey’s feelings as he should be. He also has quite a mean temper on him, and I didn’t care for his angry outbursts, even taking into account the difficult choices he has to make.

The issues and worries all three men face are very realistic though, a definite plus, and I liked that they weren’t able to magically fix everything because of love, but I didn’t feel as if they actually grew stronger trying to overcome all these issues together.

One of the things I did really like in this book were its secondary characters, especially Rose, and everything to do with Oscar’s family, including how Russ and Jeffrey find their place with them.
