Enemies to Lovers Audiobook: Locked in Silence (Pelican Bay, Book 1) By: Sloane Kennedy Narrated by: Michael Pauley

Audible link

I’ve spent years hoping someone would finally hear me. It’s easier not to try anymore….
10 years after leaving his small Minnesota hometown in his rear view mirror for what Nolan Grainger was sure would be the last time, life has decided to throw the talented musician a curveball and send him back to the town he lived in but was never really home.
At 28, Nolan has traveled the world as a successful concert violinist with some of the best symphonies in the country. But success breeds envy, and when Nolan’s benefactor and lover decides Nolan has flown high enough, he cruelly clips Nolan’s wings. The betrayal and ensuing scandal leaves the violinist’s career in shambles and with barely enough money to start fresh somewhere beyond his vindictive ex’s powerful reach. But just as he’s ready to get his life back on track, Nolan gets the call he’s been dreading.
After a stroke leaves his father a partial invalid, duty-bound Nolan returns to Pelican Bay and a life he’s spent years trying to forget. When he’s forced to use the last of his own money to keep from losing the family home, desperation has him turning to the one man he’d hoped never to see again….
Even if I could speak, there wouldn’t be anyone there to listen….

Sloane Kennedy is hit or miss for me. Not because she is a bad writer or because she doesn’t have great ideas – but because I’m only good for so much angst before I throw my hands up in resignation and that seems to be what she excels at.

I was recommended to listen to this story because it was less angsty and it had a DA MC – which I love!- and I’d say it was a pretty good rec.

On the one hand I do find the deep, dark “moments” to be a bit much for my taste – I’m more a humor and hijinks type reader than deep and contemplative. On the other hand I think the two MCs moved on fairly quickly from their back stories to embrace one another.

I really enjoyed Michael Pauley’s narration and think he matched the tone for this story perfectly. He doesn’t do a lot to change the voices of the MCs and I wish he’d attempted to alter the voice a little of Dallas but he’s easy to listen to and great with emotion.

If you’re a fan of the author you’ll adore this, if you’re new to the author I’d read some reviews and see if she fits. This would be a great “first book” of hers to start with.

Rebel (Ballsy Boys #1) by K.M. Neuhold and Nora Phoenix

release day review

Good Reads Link

“I don’t do relationships, I break them.” ~ Troy

If there’s one thing life has taught me it’s that everyone eventually leaves. But that’s okay because I have a strategy: no friends, no boyfriends, limit repeat hook-ups, no sleep overs, and above all leave them before they leave me. I’ve put my break-up skills to work doing others’ dirty work for them.
The last thing I expected when I agreed to do an embarrassing breakup song and dance was to end up on the doorstep of the very recognizable—and stupidly sexy—Rebel. When you meet a man like Rebel you’d be insane not to make a move. And just because he has me tossing out every single one of my rules doesn’t mean I’m in trouble, right?

“I’m everyone’s friend, but no one’s everything.” ~ Rebel

I love working for Ballsy Boys, but when you make the kind of videos I do relationships are pretty damn impossible. Besides, guys find me sexy and want to either be with me or be me, but no one has ever cared enough to see the real me.
Until I meet Troy. He has no problem whatsoever with my job, but he’s determined to keep me at a distance. For the first time, a hook-up alone is not enough. I want more with him. Hell, I want everything. But he resists at every step until I’m about ready to give up. What do I need to do to show him that this is real and worth fighting for?

***Rebel is the first book in the Ballsy Boys Series and is a super sexy MM romance with plenty of good times. While this book and this series do contain some instances of sex outside of the main relationships, they DO NOT contain cheating.

This was a nice surprise from these two authors. I’ve been a fan of Neuhold but was not familiar with Phoenix. I think, based on this story, she adds a lot more “fire” to Neuhold’s already spicy writing.

Of course, since this is about porn stars, we can expect a lot of sex. But… there is seriously a LOT of sex. I’m as big a fan of anyone of a good sex scene – or several – but this was the main way our two MCs communicated with one another and after awhile I began to skim.

Sigh. Yeah. There was just too much sex and not enough believable relationship building for me. When our MCs finally reach the point in the relationship where it’s time to “define the relationship” I understood why Troy was so scared and I understood why Rebel was ready to commit, but I didn’t catch that point where Troy was converted.

I enjoyed the character development and am absolutely intrigued by the developing story lines I can see blossoming among the secondary characters – I’m talking about you Pixie! – and I’ll look forward to the next installment.

If you’re a fan of porn star romance, you’ll be psyched to find this new series. If you’re one who gets bothered by an overabundance of sex … this will probably bug you.

All in all it was worth the read and caught me on it’s hook for book 2!

(FWIW if you read Amy Lane’s Johnnies series I think that look at porn was maybe more realistic, and this is more in line with TM Smith’s All Cocks series in it’s look at the industry.)

Hurricane Reese by RL Merrill Blog Tour and Excerpt and Giveaway!

OS: Welcome to RL Merrill here to talk about their new book!

Thank you so much for having me on Open Skye today! Hurricane Reese has been one of my favorite stories to write as it includes so many elements that really appeal to me: musical theater, dance, a hilarious grandfather, humor, family and a cast of multicultural, multigenerational family and friends that really make this story special. Reese was a blast to write because while he’s everything many of us fantasize about, we have Jude to show that just because someone is sexy, talented, and gorgeous, that doesn’t mean living with them is a picnic. Jude is the kind of guy who deserves a HEA because he’s worked so hard to take care of everyone else. In my previous stories I’ve written all kinds of love affairs and characters from various parts of the LGBTQ spectrum, but this the first time my two main characters have been men and I LOVED telling their tale. It was a natural progression for me and I have so many more stories in the works. So check out Hurricane Reese, check out my self-published work, and stay tuned for more Rock ‘n’ Romance!

Please leave a comment about your favorite musical, grandparent or just make me laugh and I’ll randomly choose one commenter to win a $10 gift certificate to Dreamspinner AND an e-copy of Hurricane Reese!

Tony award-winning musician Reese Matheson’s life resembles a natural disaster, and caregiver Jude De La Torre is caught in the eye of the storm. Can the love these two opposites find together survive caring for an ornery octogenarian with wayward balls and a meddling family insistent upon tradition?

A public break-up is not what Reese expects upon returning from the successful run of his musical in London. All he wants to do is spend time with his beloved grandfather and musical mentor, who suffers from Alzheimer’s. Reese knows he doesn’t have much time left before the elder Matheson doesn’t remember him. In classic “Hurricane Reese” form, he moves into the cottage by the sea, displacing Jude, the intriguing caregiver he’d hired two years before. When Grandpa proves too much for Reese to handle on his own, Jude comes to his rescue, taming Grandpa… and the Hurricane as well. Soon all Reese can think about is how to get Jude out of his scrubs and into his bed. Permanently. Will Hurricane Reese destroy everything in its wake, or will this gay odd couple learn to harmonize together?

Reese wanted to dive back in and keep kissing that delicious mouth. The moment he felt Jude give in, Reese knew every victory with Jude would be just as sweet. His lips…. God, Reese could explore those lips for an eternity and never completely know them. Jude was like a deep well of mystery that Reese wanted to get lost in. What was it about that quiet young man that made Reese want to roar?

He waited for a snappy comeback, but Jude seemed to have given up. Or given in, Reese hoped. He wanted Jude desperately, and though he knew the timing couldn’t be worse, he didn’t care one bit. There was a reason the two of them had been thrown together. Reese knew Jude would stand by him, and though he didn’t consider himself particularly manipulative, he planned to use the situation to his advantage. Who knew what would come of an affair with Jude? Reese had a feeling that, once they allowed themselves to experience a deeper level of passion with each other, there would be no turning back. And Reese was ready to move forward with that plan.

Jude looked around the SUV as Reese waited for him to accept that he had no alternative. He was counting on Jude’s exhaustion to spur him forward, and in the end, that was probably what finally got Jude to climb out of the car and shut the door.

“Did you want me to grab anything?” Reese asked, trying to keep the triumphant smile off his face.

Jude just raised that eyebrow once more and then turned his back on Reese, moving in that sensual way that had Reese panting after him. He needed to cool his jets a bit. It wouldn’t do to strip Jude down and bend him over the first available surface. He’d have to be creative. And there was Grandpa to consider. He knew Reese had a colorful love life, and he didn’t keep his opinions about it to himself. It didn’t bother Reese, but he had a feeling Jude would take the grumblings of the old man personally. Reese could tell he was sensitive that way.

If only they were going into the house alone. Reese intended to feast on Jude for hours… just as soon as he had an opportunity. As though he heard Reese’s thoughts, Jude turned and looked back at him as he climbed the steps to the porch. Oh, Jude, you’re in so much trouble.

When the Devil Wants In by Cate Ashwood and J.H. Knight

release day review

Dreamspinner Presents

Blurb: John Turner has been living a lie most of his life. Growing up in the rural Georgia town of Magnolia Ridge, he’s only ever let one person truly know him: his best friend, Chloe. To the rest of the world, they’re the perfect couple, but just between them, she’s helping John hide in plain sight.
Matt Kinsley, a cop from San Francisco, moves to town looking for a slower pace and to reconnect with his Southern roots. Starting over in Magnolia Ridge means taking a step into the closet, but Matt finds that with John for company, he doesn’t mind so much.
As the two start to explore a possible relationship, a horrific murder rips the town apart but brings John and Matt together in ways neither could’ve imagined. Matt must decide where his loyalties lie while John resists the urge to run again. Together, they have to discover who the real devil is before another life is destroyed.

Review by Dee

Interesting story. John is a closeted gay man who lives in in rural Georgia. He’s close to his family but scared of coming out to them, especially to his religious mum. His best friend is Chloe who pretends to be his long-term girlfriend.
The story starts slowly, but picks up speed and steam when John meets Matt as an out of state hookup. Imagine John’s dilemma when he finds out that Matt is the newest addition to the local police force!
The 2 men steal moments to be together whenever they can, until a devastating crime forces them apart. The crime was surprising, and the events surrounding it were interesting. I didn’t see it coming!
It took me a bit to get into the story, mostly because at the start, John goes to great lengths to establish Chloe as his girlfriend/soon-to-be fiancée. As the story progresses, it’s easy to see why John is closeted; however he begins to hope for an out if he continues to develop his relationship with Matt.
The characters weres well developed within a unique storyline. I hope there will be a story about/with Santiago ☺

Review by Mary

I am in two minds about this book. I was eager to read it because I’ve like both authors work and was intrigued to see what would come of the partnership. The start is a classic of an hookup who ends up meeting in regular life. The problem is that John is deep in the closet. Matt was a Puzzle. I couldn’t wrap my head around why someone out and proud would choose to move to rural Georgia effectively putting himself back in the closest. This was explained about a third of the way into the story but it just didn’t feel authentic. It was not until later into the story that I got more of a sense where Mac was coming from. The romance is just a series of hookups under the guise of a new friendship aided and abetted by Chloe. I was starting to wondering were the story would go with the romance side.
The introduction of the murder mystery came out of left field and was quite dramatic plot twist. I was a little startled, there was no way I saw it coming but there wasn’t enough time left in the book for it to develop into anything I could sink into. The conclusion to the murder felt like it was a quick wrap up as well.
The story seems to be straddling between being a romance and a murder mystery but never quite settling into either genre. I liked both sides but felt dissatisfied with the whole book. Good writing though, there is a real atmosphere of small town Georgia, the heat and scenery. I definitely can’t fault with the quality of the book, it just didn’t work for me this time.

Skater Boy (Hot off the Ice #4) by A.E. Wasp

Good Reads Link

In a world that measures success in dollars, how do you put a price on happiness?

Love, marriage, and a baby carriage. It’s all Alex Staunton has ever wanted. Well, that and an Olympic medal for figure skating. The medal he got. The rest of it – not so much.

When his most recent poor decision comes to a door-slamming end, Alex moves into the house of his best friend, Thunder starting goalie, Sergei Pergov. But when tragedy strikes, giving Sergei custody of the twins he fathered confidentially, Alex’s problems take a backseat to the needs of two infants, and Alex vows to be the best fake-dad and house-husband he can be.

Sergei is dazzled by the way Alex makes managing all the craziness look as easy as doing a triple-axel. As their friendship grows even deeper, Sergei realizes he doesn’t want to imagine a life without Alex in it. Alex is the one who makes their house a home; his love makes them a family. How can Sergei make Alex understand he’s worth everything?

Skater Boy is a story about falling in love with your best friend. It contains discussions about baby poop, day drinking, girls’ night out, and the purchase of a mini-van.

This was both really sweet, kinda funny and a little annoying.

I loved Sergei and his relationship with Alex. They were both ridiculously oblivious and when they began to explore their “more than friends” feelings it was sweet and sexy. However, I had a hard time with how Alex turned into this obsessed little home maker and completely gave up any “self”. It didn’t seem to fit his character and though I could see him becoming “super dad” and being OTT about everything, I didn’t see him losing all touch with his profession.

In any case, I thought this was a great addition to the series and I really loved 80% of it 😉  There wasn’t much hockey in this…

If you’re a fan of the series you’ll want to give this a go – you don’t have to have read the others to enjoy this.

Audiobook: How To Save A Life (Howl at the Moon #4) by Eli Easton Narrated by Matthew Shaw

Audible Link:

Rav Miller looked into the terrified, intelligent eyes of the chocolate Labrador on death row, and knew he’d do anything to save him. When the dog, Sammy, escapes and heads to Mad Creek, Rav follows. Mad Creek. The town had become legendary in Rav’s mind after he’d met that bizarre group last year. Rav dismissed his crazy suspicions back then, but when he arrives in Mad Creek, he knows it’s true. Dog shifters exist, and apparently they all live in the California mountains. It’s enough to blow a bad boy’s mind.

Sammy has something in common with Rav—neither one of them trusts people. After Sammy’s abuse as a dog, he particularly dislikes tough-looking men like Rav. But when Sammy gets a chance to work with rescued dogs at the new Mad Creek shelter, his deep compulsion to help others overcomes his fear. Rav and Sammy bond over saving strays. If they can each find the courage to let someone else in, they might find their way to love.

Sheriff Lance Beaufort doesn’t like humans moving into Mad Creek, especially not the tattooed and defiant Rav. When Rav starts a rescue shelter, the town thinks he’s wonderful! But Lance isn’t fooled. He doesn’t buy Rav’s innocent act for one second. How much does Rav know about the quickened? What is his game? And why did he have to show up now, when Lance and the other town leaders are overwhelmed by all the new quickened pouring in?

Rav knows how to save a life. But can he save an entire town? Can he rescue Mad Creek?

(Book reviewed here previously)

This is one of my all time favorite series out there! Eli Easton has a gift for blending humor, science fiction and romance all into one package! Her love of dogs is evidenced with every word “Praise to Dog”! You can absolutely see the wagging butts and cocked heads as her characters leap off the page and into your heart. I absolutely bawled when I read Sammy’s story. Talk about hitting you right in the feels! Though we know stories like Sammy’s are a dime a dozen, and we become inured to it over time, it’s always great to have a reminder of how much work we have left.
(Spoiler bit – I was glad to see that although it was sad, Eli didn’t back away from the message that it’s important to spay and neuter – no matter how you look at it, these are tough issues, and I was glad to see she handled it masterfully.)

In any case, this story takes us back to Mad Creek and we get to see all our friends! I thought it was great that Lance gets some help – poor guy! – and that Rav is here to help him with all the new Quickened coming to town. Rav and Sammy’s love story is so, so sweet and like the lab he is, Sammy was easy to love and so earnest!

In addition to giving us a really sweet romance, I love that the author also gave us a “viable” solution to the town’s problems. I really hope we get to see Simon’s story soon – he’s been so patient- ha!

Highly Recommended!
6 of 5 stars

I’m really glad the narrator has stayed the same for all of the Howl at the Moon books. Matthew Shaw does really nice job handling all the different voices and giving all of the quickend that sort of vaguely clueless voice without making them sound dumb. He’s also got the sheriff really nailed. And I like his version of Rav.

This is a super great series with the super great narrator and highly recommended!

Audiobook: The Tale of August Hayling By: Kim Fielding Narrated by: K.C. Kelly

Audible link

August Hayling went west following the discovery of gold in California. While most prospectors were hoping to strike it rich, August was more interested in a place big enough to let him get lost. Sitting alone in a saloon, he is approached by a peculiar man named Georgios Cappadocia, who offers August a fortune in gold if August will come along and help him fetch it.
August soon learns that his strange new employer is engaged in some kind of ancient dispute. And when they arrive at their destination, both men will realize that not all treasures are golden – and sometimes destinies can be changed.

This is very surprising! I always expect wonderful writing, unique story lines and muti-faceted charachers from Kim Fielding, so I don’t know why I was so surprised by this story.

From the blurb I wasn’t sure what to expect but I figured maybe there’d be some romance in the new town. Well, I’m not going to give this away with a spoiler – but what I thought was right and wrong…

In any case, by the time I got to the end I got a really big laugh and I could really appreciate him Fielding‘s sense of humor and sense of irony. I loved how she handled the physical part of their relationship! So funny and sweet too.

(The only thing that would have made this story better is if we could have spent more time with our guys once they get together…)

I love KC Kelly I think he is a fantastic narrator. His voice – obviously – doesn’t always go with every story but it absolutely goes with the story. It has the old California-gold-dust-cowboy-prospector tone of voice. Old fashioned. And he’s really good with any sort of emotions and the comedic timing.

This is a really surprising and a really interesting, totally unique story. I would definitely recommend this to people who are interested in something new and different, who appreciate humor and history, and who are willing to look at things from a different perspective

Cover Reveal and Excerpt for Exodus by CC Bridges!

OS: Welcome to for stopping by with their new cover!

CC: Hello! I’d like to thank Open Skye Book Reviews for hosting my cover reveal!

This is the second cover for this book, part of the matching set for the Heaven Corp series that my amazing artist, LC Chase, created.

I really like how it looks like Hank is bound here, and if you’re familiar with Hank from Angel 1089, the first book in the series, you know that he likes that sort of thing. In Exodus, we find out a bit more about Hank and Ian, and why they left the shining city of Heaven for the devastated planet Earth. This cover does a great job of showing Hank looking at his new home, covered in a slight haze instead of bright sunshine. It’s so different from everything he’s known.

Once all three books are out, I think this set will look lovely together in paperback. I can’t wait to get my own copy.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

The truth could lead to war.

Henry “Hank” Abraham enjoys being one of the most sought-after personalities in Heaven. Life is good in the floating city for someone born to one of the wealthy and influential Founding Families. Hank parties with the privileged and beds someone different every night, flouting the morality laws that control the lives of the common people on the city’s lower levels. Then someone tries to kill him—repeatedly. Terrorists have Hank in their crosshairs, and his long disinterest in politics has come home to roost.

Ian Caldwell has been a security guard for the Abraham family for years. He survives the hypocrisy by sneaking away to the BDSM clubs on Earth to feed his baser desires. When he’s assigned to protect Hank, Ian pushes his attraction for his client aside. That kind of thing could get him reprogrammed. But he doesn’t count on actually falling for a man who isn’t as shallow and self-absorbed as he seems. Neither of them is prepared for the truth behind the attacks. Their journey will take them from Heaven to hell and beyond… and it might bring the tension between the classes to a violent head at last.

She writes surrounded by books, spare computing equipment, a fluffy dog, and a long-suffering husband in the state of New Jersey.

A tapping on the window caught his attention. Hank grinned and brushed his fingers over the button that dissolved the window. Outside, a golden gondola hovered, carrying one of the men from his security detail. Hank hadn’t completely managed to lose his handlers.
“Get in, Master Henry.”
“Ian, really?” Hank already had one leg out the window.
“Just get in the damn gondola, Hank.”
Hank winked as he dropped his shoes over the ledge. They landed with a thump on the padded seats. He followed and winced as his ass made contact with the armrest instead. Ian could have raised the gondola to the proper level. Probably thought he’d teach Hank a bit of a lesson—no, that wasn’t fair.
Ian didn’t do crap like that. If he had a problem with Hank, he’d say so, not do passive-aggressive shit like most of the security people Father hired. It helped that Ian wasn’t bad-looking for someone from the lower Circles. His face lacked the usual perfection, but something in his serious brow and dark eyes begged for a second look.
Maybe Hank had spent a few evenings fantasizing about Ian—about the strength coiled beneath that deceptively trim frame. Ian had incredible hands, and Hank imagined himself under them.
“Where are the other guards?” Hank put on his shoes, even though they stank like the back room of a bar. He managed to get one on before realizing he had it on the wrong foot.
Ian flicked on the forceshield without looking back at Hank. “I’m pretty sure they’re still at Cloud 9, expecting your return. I was the only one smart enough to follow you.”
“You don’t happen to have a hangover patch handy, do you?” His head had started to throb with the motion of the gondola.
“Sorry. You’ll have to wait until we get back.”
“What good are you?” The words had more bite than he’d intended. He meant it as a joke, but the pain made it sound bitter and angry.
He got a glare thrown his way—which he deserved—but Ian never had the chance to respond in kind. A booming roar filled his ears, and a flash of light blinded him. The gondola rocked to the side and spun and lurched in the air.
Hank slammed against the shield, thrown upward by the impact. He tumbled back onto the seats, with his head pounding and belly wrenching. The world twisted around him. What the hell had happened?

Home is Where You Are by Emjay Haze Guest Post and Giveaway!

OS: Welcome to Emjay Haze here to talk about her new book and a Giveaway!

Hi Everyone. I’m Emjay Haze, author of Contemporary m/m romance. Thank you for stopping by my Home is Where You Are blog tour on OpenSky Book Reviews.

Home is Where You are is my first book with DreamSpinner Press and I’m excited to share it with you.

My family lives in Burlington, and last year, right after I claimed Vermont for DreamSpinner Press States of Love Series, I went to visit my mom and sister and they took me on a tour of rural Vermont. It was still early for the sugaring season, but I was able to visit a couple of sugar houses. One was more commercial and had a large store, separate from the sugar processing equipment. I could see it through a small window, but wasn’t allowed to tour.

I contacted a small operation in Shelburne Vermont. Even though they were closed for the season, the owner opened their doors for me and gave us a complete tour of the process of sugar making. When We went into the sugar house where they had their evaporating and storage equipment on one side, with a large room filled with picnic tables for sugar on snow parties in the middle, and then a small area where they sold maple syrup products, I knew I was looking at the Bevington’s sugar house. This place was my inspiration as I wrote the story.

Ten fun facts about Vermont Maple Syrup

1. The sugaring season is only about 4-6 weeks
2. The Weather must go down to below freezing at night, but up to the low to mid-forties during the day for the sap to flow
3. Maple Trees are at least 40 years old before they begin producing sap and it gets one tap. Older trees can have several
4. Sugar Maples are the most common for Maple syrup, but you can tap many other types of maple trees
5. It takes forty gallons of sap to make just one gallon of maple syrup
6. Either buckets hanging from the taps and hand carried to the sugar house, or plastic hosing is used to capture the sap and transported through a vacuum pump
7. The taps should be moved each season to let the bark heal
8. Vermont is the largest producer of Maple Syrup in the United States
9. Sap is made mostly of water, and must be boiled in a wood or oil burning evaporator in order to turn into the rich syrup
10. There are four different grades of maple syrup, from the light, fancy grade at the beginning of the season and getting darker and more full-bodied flavor towards the end of the season.
