Review

So we met Ryan and Scott in the Shirt… (https://openskyebookreviews.com/the-shirt-ryan-and-scott-1-by-amy-lane/) Ryan is the more conservative of the two lovers and he’s stuck on a business trip for his birthday. They try some phone sex – but both feel too awkward with the “smutty talk” so they abort – until… Scott is a resourceful guy and he ends up “gifting” Ryan with something that helps the process along…

The big issue, however, is Ryan’s job… the two have a heart to heart about their future and Ryan returns Scott’s surprise with one of his own.

**

This is a super cute series that I’m glad to see is being re-issued. Amy has said all three parts will be available for free eventually from Dreamspinner. For now… enjoy book two even if you missed book one. It’s sweet and sexy and fun.

Guest Post: Grace R Duncan on Patience with Prizes!

book tourGuest Post from Grace R Duncan

Writing about Patience.

When I sat down to write Devotion, I hadn’t intended for it to turn into a trilogy. I was absolutely positive, in fact, adamant even, that I wasn’t going to write another series. I wasn’t even sure I was going to publish Devotion, when I sat down to write it. So, if I did, it was definitely going to be a standalone.

After all, I already had two: Golden Collar and Pandemus Chronicles. I’d already set myself up with both for my readers to want more in those two. Golden Collar still has a least one more book in it—Darius and Salehi’s story—and I’m positive I’m not done with my post-pandemic world. There’s still so much I could write about it. So I didn’t want to set myself up for further expectation of having to write more or scrambling to write a whole trilogy up front.

That lasted until Finley met Jamie.

I knew in no time, I was going to have to give Jamie his own story. There was no way I could leave him where I did in Devotion. He needed his own happy ending. My beta readers threatened all sorts of things if I didn’t and even my readers, after Devotion came out, all said they were anxious for Jamie’s story. Thankfully, by then, Patience was submitted and contracted and it wasn’t a worry.

But now that I knew I was going to write more than one story in this world, I wanted it to be different. Devotion, had an existing couple. I worked in bits of lore and mythos that were quite different from other shifter worlds. And Jamie needed something different, as well.

So, one of the things I do when I write is talk to my husband (who likes to go by Mr. Grace around other writer and reader friends) about the story. Especially when I get in a sticky spot and can’t seem to figure out how I should handle a situation or whether something is working or not. He’s amazing at listening and offering little nuggets of wisdom.

He was the one who asked me what would happen if one of the wolves got stuck in wolf form. That got even funnier when we imagined being stuck around someone who didn’t even know shifters existed. These suggestions sparked the idea of Jamie shifting back uncontrollably right in front of the person.

Which is how I figured out each of the couples is different than the typical boy-meets-boy, boys-fall-in-love, boys-have-happily-ever-after type of story. Devotion, was about an existing couple with an age difference and a ridiculous amount of stubbornness about something that should be obvious. Patience brought the idea of human mates into the world. Acceptance introduces another species.

I had fun coming up with Jamie’s story and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
PatienceFSBlurb:
Jamie Ryan was almost ready to accept he’d never find his destined mate. They’re uncommon to begin with and same-sex versions downright rare. Since his gay best friend found a destined mate, Jamie figured he was out of luck. Until end of semester stress forces him to go through the full-moon shift early. Stuck in wolf form, he runs into none other than his destined mate. Who’s human.

Chad Sutton has always had good instincts. They served him well as a detective and continued on when he went private. Those instincts tell him there’s something about the dog that comes up to him while running away from animal control that isn’t quite right. He works to put the pieces together, but is unsuccessful until his dog turns into a human before his eyes.

Jamie has no idea what a shifter’s mate bite will do to a human. He’s terrified to try—and possibly kill his mate. They hunt together for answers while working together on a case for Chad. It’s easy to see they belong together, but Jamie fears the gods gave him someone he can’t keep.

Review

We met Jamie in book one (not required to read, but highly recommended as it explains a lot and gives a much better background on Jamie.) Jamie was a short time love interest but never a fated mate. When Jamie ends up stuck in wolf form one night, he meets his actual fated mate, Chad, a human.

There are a lot of hurdles for these guys to jump: Jamie introducing himself as a human, Chad learning about shifters, both men concerned what happens when a shifter bites his human mate, travelling to find out more information, why the North American shifter leadership is hiding information, and more…

In the end, we get an absolutely amazing story that was as good as or better than book one!

**

I loved book one and this is a fantastic sequel!

From start to finish I was captivated by this story. Jamie and Chad are so adorable as a couple! Chad is easy going in a way that is totally believable. Jamie and Chad’s time together when Jamie was a wolf was hysterical and sweet. Then, while working out the kinks of their relationship Chad never let Jamie down. They are essentially together as a forever couple from the very first moment they meet and I LOVE THAT!

(Chad names the “dog” version of Jamie “Murray” after the dog in Mad About You – which I loved!)

Using the “shifted” side for crime solving is brilliant and I really hope we see more of that in future books.

The time spent in Italy was well done. It had moments of humor, sexiness, more back-story, and some local color. I really liked how the deities were brought in to fill out the origin story more for us.

It was great seeing Tanner and Finley again – the whole family/pack thing is a nice continuation of the story.

This is a book about these two building their relationship. There are a couple very small “mysteries” built in, but most of the page time is devoted to these guys and their relationship. I love that! It was intriguing from start to finish and I couldn’t put it down. I am absolutely in love with this series and I can’t wait for more and hope it comes to audio – Nick J Russo would be an excellent choice for this – hint hint!

Leo’s Pet (Rescue for Hire Book 4) Audiobook by Bellann Summer Narrated by Darcy Stark

leo petBlurb

Welcome to the world of Rescue for Hire. Meet the team members who make up a company that forms a family of heroes. The expert tracker for the team, Alex Taylor, is going about his life as usual, invisible to all around him. Then he meets gorgeous Leo DeLuca. When the famous chef let’s him know he is seriously interested, Alex can’t believe it. Unfortunately, their first meeting is interrupted when Alex is pulled away to a rescue mission. Seriously hurt during the rescue mission, Alex is surprised to wake up in the hospital with Leo at his bedside.

Will Leo stay when he finds out Alex’s injury may end his career and fill his life with restrictions? What happens when their deepening relationship is threated by pictures of cheating and paternity lawsuits? Can a plain man like Alex keep the one man who finally sees him?

Review

Alex is the team’s tracker. He gets seriously injured in a rescue and is facing a lawsuit! He meets Leo in the hospital – he’s the cousin of Tony and a famous “playboy” chef.

As per usual, once Leo spots Alex he instantly knows he’s “the one” but Alex wavers a bit.

**

This is a little different from the others in that Leo and Alex have a serious D/s relationship too, so they have to work out those particulars in addition to the normal “getting to know you” stuff.

I love this series and Darcy Stark never disappoints in his narrations. This wasn’t my favorite only because I really don’t like the dynamics of BDSM – even though it’s done to only a light degree here.

His Beta’s Vow (Omega Born Book 2) by CR Guiliano

beta's vowBlurb

Sometimes…being a hero hurts.

Vann was thrilled for his alpha, Dryden claiming his mate, and now expecting a pup. Thanks to the alpha-beta link between them, the only downside was how much Dryden’s happiness emphasized Vann’s own loneliness.

There was a wolf who caught Vann’s eye, possibly his fated mate, but Vann couldn’t claim a male. It was too engrained in him to seek out a female mate. An alpha female.

Then, the unimaginable happened. Once again, Arri was abducted, and held captive. Except this time, Vann was as much a prisoner as Arri. Day after day, Vann endured Kale’s cruel torture so that Arri would be as safe as possible.

But the pup was coming soon…

…and Vann’s vow as alpha guardian took on a whole new meaning.

Unable to bear the shame, and guilt of his actions, and unwilling to return to Woodlynn to face his alpha, Vann fled, abandoning Dryden now that the male had his mate back safe, and sound.

*~*~*~*

Dryden was beyond worried that his lead beta, his alpha guardian—his best friend—had disappeared without a trace. Knowing what drove the male to take off didn’t matter to Dryden. Vann had saved his mate, his family. He’d fulfilled his vow, and then some. Dryden was indebted to Vann, and missed the beta desperately, more than he thought possible.

But Vann’s disappearance was only the tip of the iceberg. There was no peace for his family, he was depending on Rovyn more, and more, and yet, couldn’t because the beta had claimed his mate, and needed time with Anrean.

Then there was Border pack, his brother Massey having stepped down, and gone home, leaving Dryden as alpha to both Woodlynn, and Border. Not something that was going over well with the Border wolves. Even Kasp, a psychotic wolf who once belonged to Woodlynn a few years ago was challenging his right to lead Border as the alpha who bested Sbrel.

And to top it all off, Truin, one of his beta-in-trainings, and Vann’s fated mate, had left in search of the missing alpha-guardian, without permission.

His life in chaos, Dryden wasn’t sure what was going to happen. Would he defeat the challengers bent on destroying him? Would he, and Arri ever have time to raise their pup without constant threats?

Would Vann ever return?

Review

First – ya gotta read book one for this one to have any impact.

Ari and Dryden mated and Ari got pregnant in book 1. Now… Ari and Dryden are hot and heavy and doing great until… another kidnapping.

This time Vann is caught too.  He’s forced to do something that might just tear him up and away from Dryden forever.  He’s also met his mate and is torn on how to handle that with his special connection to Ari and Dryden.

We get to see a lot more “magic” in what Ari can do, as well as meet a new Omega – mate to Rovyn.

I really loved how Dryden and Ari’s relationship only gets stronger and how the author shows us the new couples while exploring their relationship further.

If you were a fan of book one, you’ll love this and be on pins and needles for book 3!

What Austin Lloyd lacks in academics, he makes up for in his love of the animals who frequent his pet salon. He’s not lucky in romance, though, and his family would like him to settle down with a good man. Austin—and his golden retriever, Maggie—couldn’t agree more.

Evan Partridge isn’t good at letting people in. His messy family life and the past that’s shaped him aren’t worth bringing up. But his pug, Dexter, sure likes the pet salon owner.

Austin and Evan get off to a rough start, but being friends soon turns into something more. Unfortunately, Evan’s secretive behavior nearly does the relationship in, and the budding love affair almost crashes and burns when Evan’s troubled sister shows up on his doorstep.

Not speaking to each other is killing them both, but Evan doesn’t know how to keep Austin and help his sister at the same time. He just knows he has to try. Winning back Austin’s trust back, however, is going to take a whole lot of work.

Review

Austin is an adorable Pet Salon owner who ends up making a horrible first impression on the buttoned-up professor, Evan.

With some well stated apologies the two agree to be friends and a fun and fast friendship develops with a side-dose of flirting.

Everyone loves Evan and Austin together, but Evan balks due to his past.

Eventually, Evan’s attraction for Austin can’t be denied and he gives in and life is wonderful for a few short weeks… then disaster strikes in the form of his sister. Can their fledgling relationship withstand all the ghosts of Evan’s past?

**

Man I loved the first 80% of this book SO MUCH! I was a little annoyed with Evan and his contradictory attitude about Austin – he gave so many mixed signals!- but when Austin calls him out on it – he reacted like a normal, good guy and voila I was over it!

The secondary characters are wonderful, the dogs were super cute and mostly I was diggin’ the hell out this until the sister came in.

I’m just not sure what the point was of adding in that layer of stress to their relationship. It felt unfinished and not nearly as polished as the rest of the story. The ending absolutely fizzled for me. It was definitely rushed and left me with a not very good feeling for our guys.

Maybe there’s a sequel? Some closure for both Evan and Austin as well as some really needed help for Della?

Anyway, the last 20% took this from a 5 star read to a 3 star. It was good, but it coulda been great.

MJ O’Shea on “Writing” Songs – Guest Post for Pawsitively In Love

Virtual-book-tourMJ’s Favorite Writing Songs

Every Book I write has a soundtrack – I love making them, I love listening to them while I plot and plan. Unfortunately, I can’t listen to music while I write but by then, I can hear the songs in my head.

Some songs, however tend to work for … nearly every book. They’re my go to songs that just call up certain emotions for me. Romance, Sadness, Contentment etc. So here are a few of my favorites. Let’s go for the romance category J

The 1975 Falling for you. This made it onto a playlist only a few days after the first time I heard it and it’s been one of my favorites ever since.

THe 1975 Falling For You

Snow Patrol Chasing Cars … I know. Cliché. I’m a sucker for pretty.

Ben Folds The Luckiest — this was on a few lists until it actually became the title of one of my books with Piper Vaughn. If you look close enough, you’ll be able to hear this song in one of the scenes of the book. Piper and I didn’t copy the lyrics (obviously), but the general theme is there!

Snow Patrol Chasing Cars

The XX Angles – I love how it’s both gorgeous and melancholy

The XX Angels

Blue Foundation Watch You Sleeping… actually the same. This one started off as a song on my old vampire book Blood Moon’s list. It’s been back more than once!

Blue Foundation Watch You Sleeping

Sia Breathe Me … apparently I have theme haha. I think I like my romantic songs to be a little dark

Sia Breathe Me

Those are some of my absolute favorite songs for book playlistlsJ Thanks for having me stop by!! You can read about my newest book below. All of my social media links are down there as well. I love to chat with people and I’m always always always up for talking music <3

Shelter Audiobook by Ashley John

audiobookreview

shelterBlurb

Fresh from his fourth stint in rehab, Elias James doesn’t have much to live for. His relationship with his family has never been so strained and with no real life of his own, he has nothing to live for. His overachieving twin sister and his ruthless mother’s political success as mayor of Havenmoore have left him empty. Getting high started as an act of rebellion, but the addiction soon controlled his every waking moment.

Aspiring writer Caden Walker thought he had the perfect life until he discovered his boyfriend in bed with his best friend. Leaving everything behind in New York, he returns to Havenmoore to re-evaluate his life from his parent’s guest bedroom. When his mom offers him a job working for the charity she runs, helping people struggling with addiction, he’s not in a position to turn it down.

Caden never expected to find what he did, but when he is assigned to work with Elias, a reluctant attraction quickly blossoms into something deeper. Can Elias find in Caden the one thing he’s always searched for or will his addiction drag him under once again? Is Caden ready to let go of his New York dream to take a chance on something unexpected? Both men are faced with difficult times of change, but can they make it through the storm to find the shelter?

Review

Elias is an addict. His last stint in rehab is court ordered when he almost died of an overdose. He blames his mother’s lack of love for his addiction and his sister for being “too perfect”. He’s 26 and lived most of his life under the influence and on the streets. His twin sister, Ellie, is the town’s perfect doctor with a thriving practice. His mother is the town’s mayor and his father died before he was born.

This time around his mother has set him up with an apartment and a counseling plan. This is where he meets Caden.

Caden is a writer from New York who is trying to work on his novel while taking a break in Maine to work for his mother’s rehab program.

Though the two have no business doing it, they fall in live while working with one another. This causes no end of troubles for the two and threatens to de-rail both of their mother’s careers.

**

Elias is one of those characters who make your heart bleed. He’s been beat down over and over and his only coping mechanism has been drugs. Now that he’s older it’s time for him to find an alternate way to deal and Caden is there to show him the way.

Caden has his own life to sort out and his own “self” to find and by helping Elias he finds himself, too.

Of course Elias’ mother is truly evil and she stands for all that is wrong in the world. Ellie is somewhere in the middle – not without her own flaws.

Though there are some plot issues (ie Ellie being an established doctor at 26, Caden so willing to get involved with Elias, Elias being a bit self-involved) the majority of this book is very touching and rewarding.

If you’re in the mood for a good hurt/comfort book, this is the one to turn to.

Audio

Derrick McClain does another excellent job of narrating this beautiful story. He’s so good with emotion and at pacing and with bringing the dialog to life.
