One wedding, two best men, one hell of a love story!
Declan Ramsay’s brother Oliver was marrying Annabelle Aiken at a fairy tale castle on the banks of Loch Ness in Scotland. The bride and groom decided, so that he didn’t feel left out, that Annabelle’s gay younger brother could share the best man duties with Declan.
Declan had never met the kid who was to be his joint best man. Sam Aiken was abroad, working as an interpreter and finishing his studies. He wouldn’t meet Declan until a few days before the wedding, so the best men communicated and planned their speech by email for more than a year. But on meeting Sam Aiken, Declan is surprised to realize the kid isn’t a kid at all, but a tall, blond and athletic young man. Declan is sure he’s straight, so he’s alarmed by the ferocious attraction he feels for Sam. And as the attraction is reciprocated, the events at Dunloch Castle change everything Declan has ever believed about himself. But, is Samuel Aiken all that he appears to be?
I am not sure what to think about this. On many levels it’s a very sweet and fluffy GFY story about two best men, who get together during a week long wedding stay at a fairy tale castle in Scotland. And had that been all it was, it may actually have gotten 4 stars from me, but the very rushed insta-love feel to the relationship and the “surprise” ending ruined quite a lot for me.
It had a really strong start and I was laughing out loud at the beginning of the story. Declan and Sam have been communicating via email for about a year before they finally meet (without knowing it) on the plane to Scotland. Unfortunately their mutual dislike for one another upon first setting eyes on each other wasn’t really explored fully, it just petered out, when they realised who the other one was, which was a shame, as that was so much fun.
Declan goes through a truck load of character growth, as he moves from uptight, aloof, straight man, to happy go lucky gay guy during the course of the story. Sam, we never really get to know in depth, but as this is the first book about this couple, I presume more will be revealed about him as we move along the series.
The prose flowed easily and the story was engaging, and even if the relationship moved a tad too quickly for my liking, the guys were great fun and hot and steamy together.
The narrator was fantastic. I loved his distinct voices and accents and will be absolutely be looking for his name in future audiobooks. 5 stars for the narration and 2.5-3 stars for the book equals an overall score of 3.5 for this audiobook.
Overall Impression: 3.5 out of 5 stars
